    The Atom LT. A genuine masterpiece.
    I'm like you, Paul - the fit was always good but it's the one area I felt it could be improved upon. As soon as I saw you in it, I could see where the improvements have been made.
    The Atom LT is just one of those pieces....for those that have never owned one, the way in which those of us that do eulogise over it can be somewhat confusing - until you pick one up and wear one. Then it all makes sense.
    Versatile isn't the word - I LITERALLY live in mine for 7/8 months of the year in the UK and I'm never less than supremely comfortable. It's a brilliant mid layer. Technical layer. Walk around town later. Walk the dog layer. Winter
    running later, and it feels like the best jacket in the world for every one of those activities. It's absolutely magic.
    Damn you, Arc'teryx.! More money spent. 😂🙈

    I own about ten different jackets for various mountain activities and I completely concur with this review - it's just such a great versatile jacket. It gets more use on its own than pretty much all my other jackets combined. It's even good for very cold winter running. Actually a bit of a bargain for an arc'teryx item too (relative bargain).

I frequently hike/climb Peaks that reach 3000-4400 meters here in California, beause of height i’m always trying to beat the dreaded afternoon monsoon weather out here. How much more Breathable is The Proton? Or what are you thoughts between in The Proton LT and Atom LT?

    I bought the Atom LT quite recently and am LOVING it. It's perfect for the Netherlandic climate on its own and in combination with a shell. The only thing that would make it better in my opinion is more adjustments on the hood. I bought my girlfriend the women's Atom Hoody, and the side-adjustments on that model really take it to the next level. I do appreciate the LT's fleece side-panels, though, because I would be too hot without them in most circumstances.

      Personally, I wear a medium in the Beta AR and a large in the Atom LT, but it's largely down to body shape. If you generate a lot of heat, it's possibly worth taking a look at the Proton. It looks virtually identical to the Atom but has a more breathable face fabric which allows wind to pass through, recirculating all the hot air you've built up inside. I'll pop a link to a video we did on this a while ago. Kind regards, Harry.

    Hello! I’ve just purchased one of these Atom LT’s from your website and am very happy with it.

    • @trekitt
      @trekitt  3 года назад +2

      HI James. The Atom has a tough face fabric that can withstand rucksack use. How you wear it as a layer will hugely depend on what the weather is like, the altitude, your physiology, how active you are etc. etc. The Atom is hugely versatile and works as a standalone jacket and as part of the layering system. Check out one of our earlier videos on layering - ruclips.net/video/GhYOFc8K-io/видео.html

      This is the new autumn/winter version which has been with us for a few weeks now. Whether you need both/one or the other will depend what you use the jacket for and how you prefer to layer. The Atom can be worn on its own no matter what the weather is doing thanks to its synthetic insulation, whereas the Microlight can't be worn in heavy rain for a prolonged period of time. Atom AR video will be released on Friday, however we didn't compare the two. Both the AR and LT are more than suitable as an everyday jacket, but the AR has twice the amount of insulation in the main body (60g/sqm vs 120g/sqm) and doesn't have the air-permeable side panels, so it just depends how warm you need to be, which layers you have underneath and the activities you'll be using it for. Atom AR hands down. If you aren't doing high output activities or using this to layer under another insulated jacket I don't see the hype, it is NOT warm. He was warm in this jacket during the video on a "warm summer day". anything lower than 0-5 degrees and you'll be cold. Obviously when its 20-25 degrees out it's too warm.

      Hi Afet, that's an interesting question/s. As always, the choice of layers will hugely depend on you, your physiology, your metabolism, the geographical location and activity type, as well as personal preference and experiential knowledge. You have provided me with some of the details, and it looks like we're stuck with Arcteryx products, so my option would be:
      Motus, long sleeved, zipped neck - baselayer
      Proton LT - midlayer
      Gamma SL Hoody - wind/outer layer
      Atom AR - Insulating layer (belay jacket)
      Beta AR - waterproof outer layer
      Let me know what you think. Paul.

    I’ve been doing a lot of research and selected my 3 favorites arcteryx jackets ( atom LT, atom AR and Thorium AR hoodie ). I was wondering, in therms of warmth ( I know it is subjective and depends on many factors ), which of these will withstand -10 to -15 Celsius temperatures, using it as an outer layer?

    • @trekitt
      @trekitt  3 года назад +2

      It's hard to answer definitively as it depends what you're using the jacket for and where you live. Here in the UK, -15°C would require something far warmer than the Atom LT unless you were carrying out a high-output activity, so I'd be looking at the other two in most circumstances. However, I also have family over in Canada who regularly go out in those temperatures with lighter layers and are perfectly comfortable as the cold over there is far 'drier' than we get over here. Unfortunately not a very conclusive answer, but it just depends! Kind regards, Harry.

I bought the Proton while living in Waimea, Hawai'i on the Big Island where it gets cold but can warm up quick. Breathability is a must in Hawai'i. Hi, thanks for your comments. The Montane and the Arcteryx are pretty similar and will both do a good job of keeping you warm and protected. However the construction is very different. Montane use a blown insulation in stitch through baffles, whist the Atom uses sheet insulation with much less stitching. Therefore the Atom provides increased weather resistance due to fewer cold spots and stitching. The other big difference will be in the fit. The Montane jacket will be a slimmer, more athletic fit. Personally I'd struggle with the Montane on fit and find the Atom much more comfortable. I hope that helps. Paul.

      Guten morgen Hi Markus and thanks for your comments. Your question is very hard to answer definitively as there are so many variables involved:
      Your activity level - strolling or yomping.
      Your metabolism - feel the cold or not
      The wind speed
      The altitude
      etc. etc.
      However if you were stood still at sea level, with no wind, and wearing a mid weight (200gsm) merino baaselayer and an Atom LT, you'd be a bit chilly!
      I hope that helps. Paul.

      I find the older version to be good to about 40 degrees f if I'm just walking the dog or light work. If I'm cutting firewood it's good below 20 degrees f. It's a wide range depending on work load. It's a great mid layer if you are headed below 20 in my experience.

      I concur, the new AR is (feels) slightly longer and I think that that is down to the overall improved fit; it's a huge improvement on the previous model. Paul.

    Hello. Excellent review, as always. I hesitate between the Proton LT, and the Atom LT. My use will be to wear it in everyday life in the fall, and in the spring, and sometimes for sports. I also want to use it in winter as a mid layer under a shell like the Beta SV, for small excursions, fatbiking, and snowshoeing. Which of the two would be better, and warmer? I live in Quebec, Canada and the winters are rather cold.

    • @trekitt
      @trekitt  3 года назад

      Hey Mario, thanks for getting in touch. That's a tough question to answer as the jackets are designed for different purposes. The LT is more weather resistant, windproof, water resistant etc.. Whilst the Proton is much more breathable with good water resistance but much less windproofing. The LT works best as an all-rounder, whilst the Proton works best for high output activity or as an effective midlayer. Warmth wise they are very similar, but that all depends on what you are doing and how much heat you are generating yourself. If in doubt...get both! Thanks for watching. Paul.

      Thank you for this quick response. I read in the technical information, that the Atom lt has 60 grams of Coreloft, and that the Proton lt has 80 grams of Coreloft. You tell me that the Proton breathes better, so I imagine that the insulation is not made in the same way in the two jackets ... Would the Atom be less warm in the mid layer than the Proton given its 20 grams of Coreloft less?

    • @trekitt
      @trekitt  3 года назад +1

      @@mariorock76 Both the Atom and Proton have Coreloft Compact, so there's no difference in insulation breathability - it's all about the outer fabric. Both would be similarly warm as a midlayer despite the 20g difference, but the Proton will breathe better. Harry.

    How does one decide between the atom lt and the proton lt?

    • @27johnny
      @27johnny 3 года назад

      Jens Panneel basically the same jacket functionality wise. Biggest difference is the front zip pocket on the proton could be really handy for certain activities - particularly climbing with a harness. Whereas the lack of front pocket on the atom probably makes it look a bit less outdoorsy if wanting to use it just casually.

    • @trekitt
      @trekitt  3 года назад +2

      The largest difference is the face fabric. The Proton is highly air-permeable, meaning it's more breathable and suitable for activities where you'll be constantly moving and pushing out plenty of heat. The Atom's fabric is more wind-resistant and less breathable, making it better for slower moving activities or where you require a little more warmth. The Atom tends to be the more popular choice, but it's all down to what you're using the jacket for. Kind regards, Harry.

  • @bens1972
    @bens1972 3 года назад +1

    I bought one! It is really good, I’m very happy with it. However, perfect it is not. The hem cinch cords, whilst admittedly very light, have an unfortunate cheap/low rent feeling and irritatingly far back on the jacket which means you have to be a contortionist to adjust them.
    Secondly, why don’t Arc’teryx just use YKK zips like everyone else. The zip still comes underdone on its own, even though it has zip stops. If you’re between sizes (like me) you may want to consider sizing up as it seems to happen over layering when the jacket becomes slightly too tight fit. That said, this never happens with my Mammut Rime which employs much better YKK zips...(and much better cinch cords)

    • @trekitt
      @trekitt  3 года назад

      HI Ben, the Atom is probably about as "perfect" as you can find, but I do accept your comments, those drawcords can be a bit fiddly. Personally, I've had an issue with the zip and the overall performance of the jacket outweighs (for me) those little niggles. Paul.
