Debbie Sausville of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) tells the story of Lauren, a life that was cut too short from the dangers of driving under the influence.
I'm still amazed by Debbie's courage and strength to talk about this most tragic loss of her step-daughter Lauren. I worked with Debbie for many years in Alexandria, VA where she was one of our strongest advocates representing Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) combatting impaired and drunk driving. Thank you Debbie for all your years of incredible work, all in the name of keeping us all safe, especially family members.
The impact of you saying her beautiful hair had lost its luster, her beautiful eyes were sewn shut and her beautiful smile gone because it was sewn shut hit me the hardest 😢. I can tell you are good at your volunteer service as a speaker! That was a horrible image 😢 I’m an older mom and I worry still if my kids go out and alcohol is involved! Both boys had a DUI when they were young and I thank God they didn’t hurt someone or themselves! It taught them to call me or a taxi or an Uber! Now I have a gorgeous 16 year old grandson who just got his license so I will stress the same thing to him! Thank you for the hard work you do and I’m so very sorry for your loss 🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏
Thank you for your service to Madd. My parents were volunteers for Madd in the 1980s when my sister was killed by a drunk driver when she was 36. Today it still remains a painful loss for me and everything we missed out on as sisters. My parents and Other folks in Madd would be in the courtroom in Minneapolis, MN trying to ensure that justice would be served but still to this day drunk driving is as bad if not worse than it was in 1981 when my sister Pat died. The person who caused her death was blowing a .18 and driving on the wrong side of the highway at night with his lights off. He got jail on weekends so as not to interfere with his school schedule. The only true justice is the laws of nature and he died a year later of leukemia. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family.
This story really touched me! Ya see, I'm an offender..I've had two DUI's in my life and I felt like jail was the worst that could ever happen to me. Then I watch stories like this one and cry my eyes out because their family member is gone..I could have been the one who caused it..I just sit back and think about how many times I had gotten by doing that...like the Mrs. said, it's not a point of if....it's a point of when because if that activity continues then it'll be a matter of time before you're going to jail pretty much for life...or someone's setting up your funeral arrangements!!..Please be safe out here yall and all I ask is just have a heart!!!...think about the potential of ruining someone's life forever...it's cool to have fun but if you're gonna drink then get a DD...I've seen many many stories regarding this matter and I tear up and cry like I've known them all of my life!!! My most sincerest condolences to you Mrs....😔🥺😢
You are so right! We are non-drinkers and as our two kids got older, we told them don’t drink and if you ever do, DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE. Our daughter took that to heart. Our son did not! He is 53 and after 20 years, just got his third DUI. He insists he’s not an alcoholic. Will not go to rehab. I wish we had someone like you to talk to him. He will not listen to us whatsoever. Really never did.

Thank you for this. I recently drove home after drinking and was confronted by family members. The fact that I drove in that state scared me enough to stop drinking at all. As just a social drinker, that was no excuse and the negatives FAR outweigh any positives you might think there are to drinking.

yes im extremely outraged and horrified by the enormous loss of life every year along with tens of thousands of accidents injuries and the enormous danger that tens of thousands of americans epecially teens and children face every year for over 3 decades because of the recklessness and stupidity and irresponsibility of so many assholes especially teens that drive drunk and the countless other assholes and idiots that know teens and people that are drunk but really dont do anything at all because they dont have the decency or common sense to stop them from ever getting behind the wheel so much more and better efforts are needed and very well could be done over 2 decades ago using the internet and getting many more people involved with madd to do whats needed and can be done to stop very very large numbers of drunk people across the country from ever driving at all becuase the horrible reality is that most people really dont do anything to stop drunk people from driving this really should have been done ages ago i mean literally 16 years ago when youtubestarted out

It's such a sad story of a young girl who made a terrible decision to drink and drive. I am a lucky parent. My son totaled his vehicle on the way to a tTaco Bell. His friend went with him. I told his friend not to let him drive. He's been drinking. He was under age but lived out of town going to college. 10 minutes later, his friend called and told me about the accident. He hit another vehicle. Everyone was ok. His friend had minor injuries. His jail charges, a new car, and a lawyers charges cost us almost 10,000. He's 39 now, never drank after then. That's why I say we're lucky. He's still alive. I'm so sorry this poor lady lost her daughter. I hope all those 600 people who attended Lauren's funeral learn the dangers and consequences of DUI.😱😭💔🙏🏼
23yrs ago I myself was involved in a crash the other car driven by a drunk driver - too many injuries to list - 65% full body disability - yes - but extremely lucky to still be in the land of living, absolutely astounds me with all the education surrounding drink driving we are still losing to many loved ones - Thank you for sharing your story, your strength is truly inspiring and I have no doubt that Lauren’s story has saved lives 🙏🏼🙏🏼
At 41 I can say that I was not prepared to drive at 16. I didn't drive much and didn't drink and drive but I know I was in the car with drivers who had been drinking in the past. At 16 most of us care about parties, freedom and think they're invincible. Bad combination. I was too immature to drive and never caused any accidents but had minor traffic violations. It was odd to pull up in vehicle that if not operated carefully could harm or kill others only to be turned down from buying cigarettes because they were hazardous to my health. Anyway, they should raise the legal driving age and it should have been done a long time ago. What a courageous woman to speak of this pain. Omg, brilliant to add those lyrics to that amazing song at the end. I've heard that song a lot of times and while I remember them now, they never really stood out to me. Very powerful and I'll always think of your story when I hear that song and especially those lyrics. RIP Lauren❤
I made my kids wait until just before their 18th bdays to get their licenses and I cared not one bit what others thought of me and my decision.They weren’t bad kids getting into to trouble they were simply kids who were behind the wheel of teenage brains. I never wanted to be in a place of looking back and thinking “I should have listened to my gut”….16 is not some magical age that immediately transforms kids into maturity. It would be nice if it worked that way but…🤔
I got mine at 20... late, I know... but I wanted to make sure I was wise enough... Obey the rules of the road... I got experience by watching and observing when others would drive, and practice endlessly.
i cant know your pain. don't have any kids. however, I'd hate to lose someone due to their or someone elses drinking. unfortunately, you can talk to your kids about this when they drive or when they party, but you can't make them listen or force them to make the right decisions. you can only hope, and give them the resources and help they would need. you are a wonderful mom, it breaks my heart you must live through this pain. sometimes the most important lessons can be the most painful, and with the highest possible stakes. time won't heal this, nothing will. you will see her again in heaven, and then hopefully find some measure of peace. until then, keep passing along your very important lessons, and hopefully some out there are listening.

Hello Debbie It’s Thursday August 25th 2022 I’m 69 year old mother and grandma and have not lost a teen to drunk driving but know all about MADD because I’ve donated money to the organization Anyway I was looking for your email but couldn’t find one,, have you heard about the story regarding KILEY RODNI a 16 year old girl who went to a graduation party with about maybe 200 kids at a campground in truckee California and drinking was involved this happened Saturday August 6th 2022 She was found by AWP Adventures with a purpose A few days ago in her SUV in proser lake deceased,, Lots of speculation how she got there investigating still going on ,,,I live about 2 hours away and have followed this story and I’m wounding if MADD can do anything to help the family In a good way and reach out to the kids who attended the party,, just maybe someone from madd could let them realize the importance of not drinking and driving It was a terrible tragedy this happened I’m sure you or someone from madd can find many details about kiely rodni age 16 Thank you for everything you do and I’m extremely so sorry for your loss of LAUREN 💔💗🙏🏼
I been driving drunk hundres of times I have 2 dui I just had completed my impact panel god knows how bad a feel and god knows I will never drink and drive ever in the rest of my life

Finally someone says it's not an accident when someone crash whilst driving under the influence. But I don't agree her blaming everyone else from her decisions. How about if she herself didn't choose to drink and drive. She and she alone decided to drink even though she was said not to drink if she drove. I bet she already knew she was going to drink when she took of with the car. You can say no to beer, you can say no to vodka. You can say no to getting behind the wheel intoxicated.
Why is it solely someone else's fault? "If only, the police would've been there to stop her?", "If only that man had not bought the beer for her", "if only her boyfriend, before they left for that party, would not have given her four shots of vodka to boost her to boost up her blood alcohol concentration.......". I understand how horrifically tragic this story is. However, there's quite a few "if only" that fall within the responsibilities of the parents.

I had 3 DUI’s by the time I was 23, then license suspended twice more by 27!! 19 years sober!! So glad I didn’t kill anyone. So sorry 😢
