Welcome back! Great video to start off the year. As others have mentioned, I would also be curious on a room assistant video (looks like you might need raspi's for each room where you'd like the Room Assistant functionality as I think I saw one sitting next to the "banished" Echo Show 5 in the office?). Also, after watching your video on the Whole house lutron switch, I started purchasing these for my basement as/when I find a good deal (as they are super expensive otherwise and there isn't a way to buy them in bulk to get good discount). Unfortunately, the Lutron switches seem a bit cheap to touch (I realize cheap or not can be subjective). Would you recommend the TP-Link Kasa switches just as much - especially if we don't care for the Pico remote functionality tied in with the corresponding wall mounted Lutron switch? Would also appreciate if you could elaborate on how you automate the Garage lights - is it just via the ring door sensor (which I do not currently own)? I currently have my garage lights plugged into smart outlets as well and would love to automate. I tried with a motion sensor but its hard to find a spot in the garage that has visibility to the entire garage and if I am in a spot the motion sensor can't see, then it would turn off the lights after a while (I know I can tweak things a bit programmatically but have not yet set up Home Assistant for that 😀). Thanks.
You considered more advanced scripting for the smart motion sensor, maybe only trigger every odd number of motions detected so it switches on only when someone get in the room or maybe a pair of sensors to determine people entering / exiting the room
@@topperdude2007 Thanks! Yes that's another Raspberry Pi Zero for Room Assistant in the office. Good eye! I agree that the Lutron switches seem a bit cheap to the touch. That was pretty much my only complaint when I compared many light switches a while ago ruclips.net/video/Vt6hcSDh1wE/видео.html From my own experience and what others have said, the Kasa dimmer switches seem to work well. I am not sure how well they would work if you were going to install 50+ Kasa dimmer switches. Since WiFi might be less reliable but if you were adding some to save on cost then I think it can be a good move. I also am buying Lutron switches when they are on sale every time I see them. For the garage lights I would add a contact sensor on the door and when the door opens, have an automation turn on the smart outlet. Then in that same automation have a delay for 10 minutes (or how ever long you want) and then turn off the lights. I'm using the Ring contact sensor and it's using an Alexa Routine for triggering those automations. You could also use some ZigBee contact sensors with an Echo 4th Gen, SmartThings, Hubitat...etc.
We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version ruclips.net/user/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

Hey thanks a lot! Your channel looks awesome and that's exciting you're building a house. I just followed you back on Twitter so dm me if you have any questions!
Great video as always! Great to see another Smart Home Expert who has a dog who is Alexa trained! I have a 150lb bloodhound who knows when its time to go to bed when I tell Alexa, to turn off the TV at night, & he tries to answer Alexa whenever my parents call. He stands by the one in the living room & cries until he can see their faces. He also knows when the backyard gate is opened & runs to the kitchen window to see who enters! Now if I could only get her open the doors to let him out to go potty & back in.... Also in the next year I want to see that network rack in an enclosure with some smart home sensors for temperature & security! :)
Thanks and that’s awesome about your dog! Haha I know I need to get an enclosure and sensors for the network rack. I’ll make sure that’s taken care of soon! Well at least before next year’s tour video!
Dude your house is perfect. This is incredible. Not sure if my girl would even let me install that many smart devices but that's not gonna stop me from trying! Thanks for the inspiration!
Brilliant x I’ve purchased Amazon, ring & various smart bulbs, sockets & switches over the past 2yrs but then became ill and I’m now so excited to make my home smart after watching this Love the smart blinds 👍🏻 Thanks for sharing ideas 🙏🏼 x
I'd love to see a video on room assistant, for sure. In fact, I'd love to see more advanced/home assistant videos from you, and not just product reviews. You are very clearly super knowledgable, and I think the 90% product review route that your channel has taken (probably by accident) just doesn't do you justice.
Great video, One way of dealing with motion sensors that activate lights while watching TV is to have a power plug connected to the TV and make an automation that when there is a certain number of watts measured the sensor will not activate lights.
Or you can just create a scene when you power on TV using broadlink or switchbot hub or a smart remote to skip motion detection to the sensor between specific hours if you like and activate the sensor again with a power off scene of your TV.
I too am very interested in the room assistant video! I've been working on an idea for a single Google Home speaker system with multiple satellite speakers wire in and some sort of program that would allow me to cast to the singular speaker but choose to have it play on the main body speak and satellite speakers or targeted satellite speakers or even follow me from room to room as I move through the space. This might be the software to get me there!
Great video as always Reed. My biggest take away is that i need more motion sensors. haha And i agree, Philips Hue are some of the best. I've never had issues with mine.
Your house is everything I need in my house. From solar panels to motion sensors to dozens of house assistant lying around the house. Reed only time any guy had made me jealous 🤣
Man I super appreciate you. I was a complete luddite with all this a month ago, but I've learned so much from your videos and especially your comparison breakdowns. You've given me the ability to start my smart home transition much more decisively and confidently.
Phenomenal setup. I practically OD’ed on your smart home setup. Everything is immaculately placed. You have given me some good ideas. Time for me to get to work. 😀
I just finally moved into our new home and it’s fully automated with Control4.. it’s a learning curve but I absolutely love not having to ever get out of bed to close a light, control AC, blinds and all that.
I love most of this and I really appreciate that you only made smart switches for things that make sense such as your pantry. Only part I can't get behind is a google display next to your bed. Your eyes have photo receptors that can pick up light even through your eyelids and it can mess with your circadian rhythm (aka. not getting full, restful sleep)
Great video. Recently switching over to home assistant but still having problems with motion detection and keeping lights on. Love seeing what you have done with the new home
I had a very similar problem your motion sensor issue in the living room. My solution I added an automation in home assistant that when the tv is playing the lights automatically turn off and set a helper state to watching then the reverse for pause. Then in my motion light automation I set a condition using the helper. It's a super nice quality of life automation plus people think it's really cool when you press play and pause and the lights toggle that way.
Fantastic automations as always! Thanks so much for giving us the tour. I'm still dumbfounded at how you got the Broadlink to work with your projector since it uses a bluetooth remote and from what I have seen it doesn't learn bluetooth, only IR and RF. I have been trying for the longest to figure out some way to automate/smart powering it on. So impressive!!!
Unsure if you two would be into this, but I recently installed a short range projector above my bedframe pointed at the ceiling and it's been wonderful for watching movies and cuddling, plus it's comfy because you're just laying down compares to straining your neck to see the TV across the room.
Awesome video once again, Reed! Gives me so many ideas for my house haha, especially the room assistant! Can you do a video on that? That would be sweet!
Absolutely great automations. My unique concern is: With so many things from different brands and suppliers, I may have to end up building a "SERVER" room the way you did. This is the unique point that puts me off for so many stuff at the moment. Plus the amount of different apps you would have to use your phone and house, jezzz.
There are some ways to avoid having all kinds of apps; I have that exact concern; I don't want to use a dozen apps to control different things. I am currently playing with Athom Homey that installs an app (for integrating the hardware, really) for each vendor, but you can control all the things from the homey app, be it IKEA bulbs, Philiips Hue bulbs, Aquara sensors etc etc. I have stuff from a few different vendors. It speaks Zigbee, Z-wave, WiFi, Bluetooth, 433MHz, IR and possibly more "languages", and is meant to be able to replace all the hubs from the different vendors. It works fine WITH the hubs too though; I still keep my Philips Hue hub. It has some really nice automation features (flows) as well. I think it is very similar to Home Assistant, but without having to set up the linux box etc. And lots of nice apps already on the list. You can read more about it on athom.com (I have no affiliation, I'm just a happy user so far)
I will ditto your comment on the Bond Bridge. I've had one for a few years now and it's been rock solid. I have a bunch of smart devices as well and none of them have been as trouble free as the Bond.
Finally an updated house tour! The Samsung frame tv should integrate into home assistant, I have my Samsung added to HA with the integration and I set a condition for my living room motion sensor to only turn the lights on if the television is off. This way if the television is on and someone walks in, the lights don’t turn on. You may want to give that a shot….also in my other rooms since HA doesn’t have the option to determine if a switch was turned on by motion or by the Caseta switch, I set a condition that makes sure the light is off before triggering the motion command and when the light is activate by motion I have it set to 93%. I use the 93% for the turn off condition so the motion does not turn off a light that is set to any other brightness.
I am really impressed both by your setup and by the fact that even though it's so complicated it works that well. Mine is 10 times simpler and always something has a connection issue or needs a restart etc. Maybe it's because I am using Google home and it's more laggy than alexa? Don't know , great videos !
One workaround for the motion issue is using an energy monitoring smart plug w/the TV. When power consumption is > some amount (TV on), I disable the motion lighting automation.
Comments like these often make me realize the differences in appliances all over the world. Where I live (The Netherlands) it's practically impossible to buy a non-smart TV. It has been for years. Any TV you'll buy has the ability to connect to WiFi and thus to HomeAssistant, disregarding the need for power consumption sensors. Just check the state of the TV in HA. It's amazing really.
2:36 There is a simple solution to prevent that too. I have similar issue where my kids are napping and I do not want the automation to run. Make a virtual switch and maybe call it "Movie Switch". Now either automate the turning on of that virtual switch by monitoring the power usage of the projector or turning it on via voice command/routine "it's movie time", etc. Then have all the lights/switches you do not want to go on while a movie is running to check whether that switch (Movie Switch) is on (indicating movie is playing). Voila, lights automation stop working while movie is playing. To take it another step further. You can automate light strip on floor to only work when movie is on thus lighting up a path when people need to get up for bathroom breaks.
Yes in home assistant you could use an input boolean. Also the samsung frame should be able to report its status to home assistant so you can differentiate between content playing and a show or movie being paused.
Wow, high tech dream house! Very nice! Makes me want to do more automations around my house. I definitely need something to turn on dimmed lights with motion or door opening if I get up at night. Great tour!
Your home is beautiful and loaded with tech. The main negative I see is your reliance on Amazon, with their intermittent server issues but mostly their privacy issues. I cannot, in good faith, put their products in my new house and support their current and future planned practices. Great video!
Few days ago, I checked for how long it'd been since your last video. Thought it was at least 2 months. It was 11 days. Glad to have you back with a video I know I'll enjoy! Edit: Loved it! Would you mind doing an explainer video on exactly how to connect your switches and sensors to a hub or wifi? Thanks!
Haha thanks Henry! Sure making a video like that sounds great. I was thinking about making some getting started videos soon so I'll make sure to talk about that. I appreciate the suggestion!
Great video. I started working on my home about 6 months ago. Replaced all of my switches with Lutron. I have my floor lamps, night stand lamps and TVs on Eve Plugs, Circle View Doorbell, motion sensors in all the bathrooms, laundry room and garage. HomePod mini in every room and garage. Just ordered some Lutron shades. I'm all Homekit. I would like to get smart washer and dryer, but I haven't seen any that work with Homekit. Hopefully Matter will solve this problem. Once again, great video.
Great video. Very informative. Do you cover the cost of home automation in any of your videos? Also, what is the time investment in set up and daily interaction with your systems? Is there really a benefit overall? It seems daunting to get started and take it to this level. Thank you.
House is a super clean excellent example of current realistic home automation. Please, please come back and do some cable management though on that rack of Ubiquiti gear. A patch panel with lacing bar and wax string will let to dress in the permanent patch panel to switch ports and let you have some freedom on the backside of the panel for device uplinks and future changes while leaving the visual wires looking gorgeous.
Fantastic video! How did you get your outside porch lights to switch on when your Ubiquiti G5 detects motion after sunset? More importantly how did you get the G5 to display PIP on your TV? That is a stroke of genius!
Great video. Just a heads up Kasa removed a local support for their light switches. Are you using them cloud enabled or do you have the older firmware that allows direct control? Thanks again for the video, lots of inspiration here
This is why women try to keep men under control because we will start small and go ham if we are not stopped. This is awesome 👏 and it made me realize that I am not the only man trying to automate everything in my home. The part of the video with your kids and their iPads cracked me up because kids knows how to manipulate their parents.
Great video Reed! You've given me a fair few ideas to try out, thanks. I was wondering if there's a reason you don't use outlets with built-in USB ports to power your devices, rather than using the wall-warts?
Well USB ports in an outlet isn’t good, mainly because they are almost always USB-A ports, which means they can’t support power delivery, which means they’ll be slow for anything with a sizeable battery. USB-C PD can output over a 100W of power.
I was so proud of myself for finally getting comfortable with the Alexa app user interface. But now having watched this guy, I think I'll just hire a pro.
for the motion sensor issue, heres what I do: Create a fictional smart device (let's say "movie time" in this case). When it is turned on, automation turns off lights etc. and vice versa. Now you can ask your motion sensor to zip it when "movie time" is enabled.
The jokes in your videos are super relatable. My wife and kids have all done the same things. I love the morning routing that woke her up and not you. That's something my wife complained about as well!
What a really nice gentleman you seem to be. I have recently suffered brain damage and quite a few of these wonderful apps would be Fab as we say here over the pond! I will be saving up for quite a while from now to make life a little easier!!! I hope that i will be able to fix, install etc myself. If not I will punch into your broadcast on a regular basis. ( I will anyway ). Well thank you for posting this 'Info-Tube' . I wish all the best to you and your family. Cheers Leeroy
Quick fix (if your setup allows for it) set the Family Room motion sensor to only turn on the lights if the TV is Off - I added this simple condition for my house in Home Assistant, made everything a heck of a lot better. Ended up putting all my automations in HA, but had to make every automation a single fire-and-forget (i.e. 1 to turn lights on, another to turn it off) but that's due to other eccentricities of mine (Server running HA can update whenever, sometimes restarting HA and therefore breaking running automations). So in my case I can also set a condition for motion-sensor-driven lights to not turn on a light that's already turned on, so that they don't reset the dimmer brightness if I've manually changed it
For motion sensor issue while watching movies I suggest having Amazon routine, like you do, but to have it automatically turn off the sensor and turn it on after the show/ movie. Like a movies or relax mode
Yeah I ended up adding something like that after this video. There are still situations where I need to turn around the motion sensor, but it's definitely nice to make it less annoying during movie time!
Appreciate your knowledge and information which you share ! Nothing personal but would like to mention that living in such high wireless radio frequency house would certainly affect human health on a long run. Soon this world shall have house keeping service to not only clean house but to clean space of harmful signals in the home.
I have a great idea! You should go to other people's houses around you that have smart homes and tour therm! I love this format! Keep up the good work!
It makes me very happy to see your light switch facia screws all turned the same way 👍. 2 things people should know, toilet paper should go over the top of the roll and flat head screws should be horizontal like the horizon. 🤣
Great video and lots of great ideas. We have a smart home also but not as smart as yours. One thing I did do was to take my smart smoke detectors and interface them with my Vera system to turn off all fans in the event of a smoke alarm. Vera also turns on all the lights to make exiting the house much easier. A single scene then can reset everything for testing and false alarms.
I am in vegas, and we are building from the ground up... we close in October or so. This is great info. Currently looking up Lutron Switches as I am not familiar. I only mess with Phillip Hue. Great video and information.
Thx. A lot of inspiration for me. Quick tip concerning hue sensor : with your home assistant you can turn off the motion ! You have to use it with an automation for kids in the living Riom ! ✌️

Unsure if you two would be into this, but I recently installed a short range projector above my bedframe pointed at the ceiling and it's been wonderful for watching movies and cuddling, plus it's comfy because you're just laying down compares to straining your neck to see the TV across the room.
That's a great idea and sounds super comfy!
Awesome video once again, Reed! Gives me so many ideas for my house haha, especially the room assistant! Can you do a video on that? That would be sweet!
+1 for a room assistant video
As an electrician I am happy to see your smart switches all together and the faceplate screws all go the same direction. Now back to the video I go.
Absolutely great automations.
My unique concern is:
With so many things from different brands and suppliers, I may have to end up building a "SERVER" room the way you did.
Use home assistant just install it on a spare computer you don't have to start with a crazy server room.
I will ditto your comment on the Bond Bridge. I've had one for a few years now and it's been rock solid. I have a bunch of smart devices as well and none of them have been as trouble free as the Bond.
Great update. Really cool to see how you've integrated so many things to work together.
An absolute inspiration. I wish I had this many sensors
I’m more inspired by the family. What’s the point of a smart home if you don’t have a family. God I’m so lonely.
Use z wave for automation
One workaround for the motion issue is using an energy monitoring smart plug w/the TV. When power consumption is > some amount (TV on), I disable the motion lighting automation.
Comments like these often make me realize the differences in appliances all over the world. Where I live (The Netherlands) it's practically impossible to buy a non-smart TV. It has been for years. Any TV you'll buy has the ability to connect to WiFi and thus to HomeAssistant, disregarding the need for power consumption sensors. Just check the state of the TV in HA. It's amazing really.
Great video. Love all the automations. Well done!
(notices all of the screws on your light switch are correct)... okay.. I can trust this guy
I am currently studying electronic and computer engineering and this is inspiring
Wow, high tech dream house! Very nice! Makes me want to do more automations around my house. I definitely need something to turn on dimmed lights with motion or door opening if I get up at night. Great tour!
Thanks! Yes, dim motion lights at night are so nice to have set up!
Thank you.
Waiting
Yes how do you get the Unifi Doorbell to display on the TV?
Would also like to know that 😃
This is probably the most impressive thing I have seen on RUclips. Thanks for sharing your amazing ideas & welcoming us into your beautiful home! 🔥🔥🔥
The movie theatre and fingerprint door was so cool
Love your house! Quick question: Are you using Home assistant or smart things for the house? Thanks!
If this is smart house than i am typing from mars
🤣
Yes, I definitely want to know more about room assistant!!! "ROOM ASSISTANT" *thrusting into the air*
But now having watched this guy, I think I'll just hire a pro.
for the motion sensor issue, heres what I do:
Create a fictional smart device (let's say "movie time" in this case). When it is turned on, automation turns off lights etc. and vice versa. Now you can ask your motion sensor to zip it when "movie time" is enabled.
I’ve got so many ideas for our smart home from you
Best channel out there for this stuff
I'm a cable guy and this is usually a nightmare scenario 😂. But this guy is smart, he knows what he's doing
Thanks for the recap, after I watched your video, I bought the Lutron switches to automatic the room light. Great buy !
Congrats for the great home automation ideas and lovely family ! All the best from Rio de Janeiro , Brazil 🇧🇷.
Seems like a very monitored home and lifestyle. I do like all the smart lighting.
Damn! This dude literally owns a minecraft redstone house.
I'm my household we have a Dakboard in our kitchen that is just for the calendar, it works great for us
I really enjoy your videos, you have given me so much ideas. Started building my smart home recently, already bought some hue kits and some Wyze cams.
Amazing video! I'm waiting for my new home to complete construction and I've been inspired by your videos!
Your smart home in what I aspire my smart home to be.
Wow ... thanks for sharing this. Glad I landed on your channel after scouring the internet for hours looking for good smart home automation setup.
LOVELY HOME!!!! I love watching these videos! It gives me some ideas on what I want in my smart home...of course when i get some "smart" money!!!
You can also use the Philips motion sensors as light level sensors. I used to use it that way to measure cloudiness and turn on the lights
Your wife is a freaking genius! Thank you so much for putting this video together! I learned quite a bit! Thank you thank you thank you!
YES this is exactly what I wanted to see in my feed. Here goes another binge sesh
I’m impressed with your automation set-up. Of cause you left out the security.
Dude I absolutely love your channel!! I am blown away by your setup and can't wait to have one of my own like that!!
Thanks so much!
I have a great idea! You should go to other people's houses around you that have smart homes and tour therm! I love this format! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ve been wanting to do that for awhile and Covid kinda slowed it down. Hopefully soon!
@@SmartHomeSolver no problem and awesome! Thanks for the reply!
Super awesome! Please do a followup video on Room Assistant 😁
Thanks for taking the time to share with us!
Thanks for watching!
Gonna need to learn more about that Room Assistant my man. Appreciate the content you put out.
A amazing house and system. It's cool how everything works perfectly.
The amount of effort dis man put into avoiding flippin a light switch. Lawd.
Yes room assistant video would be awesome! Sounds like sweet technology! Love you videos btw 😁 I just set an old laptop up with home assistant and just beginning using that!
I'm in awe!!! Great!!
Slowly working up my smart home. Nothing as elaborate as yours but I'm going to hopefully get there!
I need to know what you guys do for a living. The house and everything about it is so impressive!
Somehow I wouldn't be able to sleep properly knowing I have so much automations, triggers, sensors and smart actions running in background but I guess you do many of these things for the channel!
Totally would like to hear more about room assistant and the rpi0. I got a lot of great ideas for automations from this video. Great video!
7:14 when you said "Room Assistant", I instantly imagined Paul Hibbert's "Home Assistant" dry hump 🤣🤣🤣
Holey cow, you've got some tech in that house. Love it!
Thank you for the BOND bridge recommendation, I was looking for a way to automate my ceiling fans.
