Hi Reid, I’m also a HA user, and I have Light Switches that I flashed with ESPHome, on the light switches I set it up so that the light only toggles when the the switch if pressed for less then 1 second (locally controlled on the Sonoff) I then have a separate automation in HA that checks if the button is pressed for longer. In the master bedroom this “long press” is used for switching off all the lights in the house. We haven’t switched off the lights manually or with a app for more than a year!
I also use this function in other rooms to open blinds, acknowledge a “status light” etc..

Solution 1: I would have considered a pressure sensor in the piano stool as well. Not playing for 5 minutes is quite common when studying music or talking whilst at the piano.
Detecting if someone is sat at the piano is what you need.

    • @Geoff_W
      @Geoff_W 2 года назад +8

Reed hates visable wires though. I'm not sure he would be down for a solution like that, and I'm not aware of any battery powered pressure sensors...could maybe run a Arduino with a rechargeable battery pack or something from inside the bench, but to hide the wires would be a lot of DIY and again...not something we have seen much from Reed on (which is good, I value the fact that he is lazy so he finds clever solutions for lazy people 🤣👍)

    • @mackelajt
      @mackelajt 2 года назад +7

@@Geoff_W I made my own pressure sensor for our bed that runs on battery, I had a water leak sensor to spare, which has the the electronics seperated from the water detecting part, meaning there is two wires coming out. Cut the wires off and purchased a pressure pad. Hooked it all up, when pressure is Put on the pad the circuit closes and "detects water". Some templating in HA and I have a bed occupancy sensor instead.

I found your channel last Fall when I started on the smart home journey. Your videos have helped me so so much, but thats not the reason I’ve finally decided to comment. This comment is because tonight after almost a full year of smart home and home automation iterations, my wife asked me to set up an automation and Google routine for her! 🙌 Im sure you can relate. After all the mishaps and wrong verbal queues, lights automatically turning on at 6am on a Saturday morning, this feels like she is finally 100% on board with the smart home transition. This is a great video - very informative. I really like the personal touch of including family members and shots of your house.
Regarding "NFC tag: lights off," it seems to me you already had the solution available without having to add additional hardware: "Alexa, turn off all lights." This way, you don't have to be standing in the vicinity of the NFC tag; it will work from wherever Alexa can hear you. You could go even one step further by creating an Alexa routine to trigger the event with something like, "Alexa, bedtime."

Great video Reid. A bit advanced for me but great ideas! My wife was just saying this morning I just want a button! I don't want to use my voice LOL.. I am using the brilliant system from brilliant Tech for my switches and I have 2 control pads. They work awesome and control my sonos and integrate with ring video cams. The switches can do motion sensing and you can also assign a scene to any switch using a double tap created in the brilliant environment. Well I created a scene this morning that turns off all the light in the bedroom, bathroom and close and stops the music by double tapping one of the switches. This is a routine when leaving the upstairs for work. My wife already left for work at the time so I can't wait to show her to see what she says! I know we all have to remember the wife factor

Lol, one of my main automations is for the piano lights too. I love your vibration sensor idea. What I ended up using was a radar presence sensor pointed at the bench, which turns on the lights as you sit at the bench.
The problem with turning off the lights when done, is that sometimes someone will wander into the room while the piano is being played and sit on the couch and start reading, and it's no bueno to turn the lights out of them as soon as the first person is done playing. Still working through the best way to do that....

Bedtime is easy. Two pieces of cardboard, foil connected to two wires and some weather strip foam. Connected it to an ESP32. Basically when the two pieces of foil touch, it will be “on”, aka someone is in the bed. If you put it under the mattress when someone is laying in the bed, it will cause the two pieces of foil to touch. I’ve had this set up for 3 months and it works perfectly.

Live the ideas you have here! I'll be attempting to migrate to Home Assistant, hopefully sooner than later.
As for your "it's nicer outside than inside", I've got something setup that will text me when the temp has dropped enough outside to open the windows. Couple that with the automatic sliding door opener I bought to let the dogs out when no one is home, and a whole house fan system it almost achieves what you're looking for. Granted if I want windows open we have to do that manually, but with the sliding door opening, and the whole house fan kicking on when it's nice out, we manage to stay pretty comfortable.

Ha! I actually have a 'brush your teeth' reminder already 🤣. I also have a button I made out of an M5 Atom Matrix (5x5 pixel screen built into a button, with wifi) and it shows a countdown timer while I brush my teeth. Pressing the button also flips a switch in home assistant, and if that switch isn't flipped before I turn off the lights while in bed (pressure sensor for bed) my Google assistant tells me I forgot to brush my teeth. It's been a great reminder since it's a habit I just struggle to keep up with otherwise. I could see myself doing something similar when I have kids.

We set up a "School Day Routine" in HA using Time triggers and Trigger ID's.
At 6:30am, the LED strips around our kids' beds turn from 1% Red to 5% Green. They know it's okay for them to get up and take a shower.
At 7:00, the lights in their bedroom turn Soft White at 20%.
At 7:10, their lights turn to 50%, and their Echo says, "It's time to start the day". I'm using TTS in HA to broadcast.
The morning goes on with some other reminders (medicine, tea, etc.), and at 7:40 all the light in the house turn on and the Echos broadcast a "5 minute warning." At 7:45 the "Get to the Car" message is given. At 7:50 all thd lights turn off.
In addition to the Time Trigger and Weekday Condition, I added a Helper called "School Routine" and use that as an additional Condition. If the kids are on Spring Break or have a day off, I can paused/cancel the Automation at any point.

I use motion sensors in rooms like the kitchen to track "usage" of the room. If it was used for 20 minutes straight the floor is marked as dirty with a toggle.
If the room wasn't used for an hour (and the time is between sensible times) the robot vacuum is send to this room and the toggle is cleared.
Since the floor dirty toggle is also available in the gui everyone can just mark the floor as dirty if necessary without having to start the vaccum "right now".
In the hallway I count the door openings between cleanings, so dirt from outside brought in can be easily tracked this way.
To avoid that the robot is stepping on itself with all those individual room automations I trigger a single script for room cleaning which is then queued up (published on the forum).

My all time favorite automation was when I turned on the insteon wall switch to my master bath exhaust fan. if it was between 8:30a.m. and 10:00 a m Monday through Friday (Meaning a quick shower and tooth brushing before getting dressed and leaving for work), and the outside temp was below 50, it started my car. And since my viper smart start would shut the car off after 15 minutes, if i t was below 40 it would turn the car on again after 16 minutes.
Add in the space heater turning on in my bedroom and kitchen and the wall heater in the bathroom going on to warm up the rooms I use while getting ready for work, and I was never chilly on cold winter mornings.
Keep in mind this was about twelve years ago, and it wasn't easy to get insteon and viper to talk to each other. I had to set up a dedicated email address to receive the insteon notification and autoreply to another address through an email filter to trigger an IFTT action script.
Eventually I was going to have my coffee grind fresh beans and brew a lot and turn on some other appliances based on when I turned off my alarm in the morning, but then I sold that house.

Meaning that automation would require a little more setting up at my house, running HA, hue, smartthings and google home so got a couple of options going but not been able to set it all up yet as I`m very new to HA.

Love the channel. Can you offer some suggestions for how to make the smart home “wife friendly” regarding interaction with the home? We struggle from our setup not recognizing us as individuals. Her voice/my voice. Geofence conflicts. Maybe a great video idea to present her side of the experience.

Read your blog on how to get Luna's timestamp working, I got it time stamping, great! just can't get it to show me the "time" ago...
Kinda changed it up a little bit and using this to show me when the main doors to the house were opened as opposed to having to click through for "more info" for more of a quick glance.

Instead of NFC for bedtime. Get a wireless charger stand for the phone. When the phone is charging wirelessly, you're probably in bed... Works great for us. No false triggers when charging by cable.

Over a decade ago I set up a "scene" or "routine" in my insteon hub that turned my car on to warm up when I turned on the master bath exhaust fan between 8:30 and 10 on weekday mornings if the temp was below 50 degrees. If I turn on the exhaust fan at those times, I'm showering and getting ready for work.
You should be able to set different actions based on time of day or even based on what some previous action was. So if you turn your nightstand light off after 10:30 it could fire a bedtime routine. If you turn it on before 9am you are waking up and it can fire up your toaster and coffee maker.

This was a great video; I've been watching you much more often since you made the switch to HA!
Regarding the "lights off at bedtime" automation, I had found that using the charging/not_charging sensors from the companion app worked very nicely, with the right logic. The first stage is a motion sensor in the master bathroom triggers (only once) the bedroom floor lamp to turn on after 9 pm, assuming that we're in our room for the night. Putting my phone on the charger turns it off after 1 minute. Next automation is triggered by my wife's phone charging after 10 pm, checks that mine is also charging, then kills the appropriate house lights. So far it's worked without a hitch!

I have an Apple Homekit setup. When it’s time to go to bed I simply say “Hey Siri, good night” and my automation turns off all the lights in the house, turns on my bedroom nightstand light, turns off my TV, and locks my front door. I absolutely love it!

    • @SethMuscarella

@@anthonyscott5134 yeah it's pretty awesome what mundane things can be cut out of life! As far as what triggers it, definitely go with what you prefer. I prefer to trigger my nighttime routine with a phone charge that I do anyway, and don't really feel like speaking a command to trigger it.

@@SethMuscarella , Yeah, I hear you. For me I still like my setup. Don’t mind giving the voice command, but, to each their own. Forgot to mention that another feature of this automation is that it also turns on my AC to my preset temperature.

We are using the same broadlink button for our kids to help with brushing their teeth. Each one plays the kids personalized playlist (shuffled each time) from amazon music for two minutes then shuts off.

Hi. Really like your videos. I have a question, here in the UK home energy prices are going sky high. I just wondered if you had any idea on the background energy use of all your homes smart tech. I know you have a lot of alexas but also lots of other hubs, sensors and smart lights in order to link everything together. It would be very interesting to see if all that tech adds up to something or nothing on the energy bill. What do you think? Thanks

Wow this is truly amazing!! I am just now diving into the world of automation, and I love your channel! I am leaning toward a raspberry pi for home assistant. I am fairly technical and love the idea of setting up automations for my wildest dreams, but not sure what I need to buy to get started. I'd love to see some videos in the future starting from step 1 of automation

    • @Fine_i_set_the_handle

If you run home assistant on raspberri pi there is a good chance the sd card will fail and you'll lose everything, i would only use a raspberri pi to do some simple testing to see if home assistant is right for you and then switch to a mini pc for a proper installation.
