    I have one, same color and I love it. It’s plenty for street riding and I got a power commander 5 along with a yosh carbon slip on. I am leaving the valve because it does help with torque. Also have Sato rear sets which are no longer available. Sadly

    I recently got back into sportbikes after nearly 17 years since I sold my 96 Honda CBR600F3. I rode that CBR for 18k miles in the first year. But now I wanted a liter bike without all the rider assisted electronics, so I found a 2003 R1 with only 10k miles on it. I've done some more modern upgrades like a 14 inch Hindle muffler with 2.25 inch headers and a power commander 5 tuned for my exhaust. The muffler that was on it was a 21 inch Micron slip-on. After my current upgrades, now my 19 year old R1 makes 145 wheel hp, which is about 165-170 motor hp. Far more than I need, and with the EXUP system removed, the Hindle full exhaust sounds great. Truthfully, I actually prefer not having all the electronics, because I like honing my skill instead of a computer controlling everything. Pretty much the only electronics I'd care to have would be ABS, other than that I'm good with just the fuel injection.
    My R1 gets compliments all the time, and it's so clean and well kept that no one believes it's 19 years old. The only thing that the 04+ bikes have, that I wish my 03 had, is ram air. However, there is a Graves airbox I can get that would give my 03 ram air. I might do that and some velocity stacks. From what I've read I might be in the 150-155 wheel hp range with those added. That's 175-180 hp from a bike that is almost a classic, and it only cost me $6000 instead of $12k-20k for a newer model.
    I love my R1, and the mods I've made make it so customized to my liking that I'd have a really hard time selling it and starting over.

    Isn't this the 2nd generation of the R1? I think you said 3rd. Love this bike. I remember I bought mine brand new (2002 model year) in sept of 02. I've had 20 or so bikes since then but this one was the one..(literally). Funny thing is that I picked one up just yesterday, an 03 Raven with 30k miles! Amazing how good the bike still is....she was my 1st love and I'm happy to have her sister take a place in my current garage.

    • @FrontWheelUp
      @FrontWheelUp  2 года назад

      Possibly, I guess its sort of open to interpretation, 2000-2001 saw improvements over the original 1998-1999 R1, the 2002-2003 further refined it....but in 2004 the R1 had a fairly major overhaul. I might have been referring to this bike being the 3rd revision of the original R1...or I may have made a mistake! 😂
      Funnily enough I've been filming my review of an original 1998 R1 yesterday, an awesome bike so stay tuned for that.
      Your 100% right, it's an awesome bike. Enjoy it! 👌👌

    I had its poster on my wall, it was beautiful, it still is but I never liked its rear end, its way long, even going farther than the rear tyre.
    Is there anyway to shorten it by a couple of inches..?? It will still look the same but a little more compact.

    • @FrontWheelUp

      100% possible. If you punch "02 R1 tail conversion" into Google you'll get some ideas. Lots of people have switched out the tail unit to one from a newer generation R1. 👍
