I had a maroon 04 R1 exactly the same as the one in this video, to my mind the best looking bike Yamaha ever made. It was brand new & a bargain at £7,500 so couldn’t say no. I should have done because I was overtaking a Ford Transit van near Sledmere, N. Yorkshire 15/8/2010. I didn’t know there was a right turn off as it wasn’t visible. The Transit turned into me, knocked me of & ran over both legs. I was still conscious & the pain was indescribable. I was only doing 45mph but if I’d been going faster I would’ve been past before she turned. She admitted not looking in her mirrors, signalled late & cut the corner even though she knew bikes were coming past. I severed an artery in my leg & had 26 litres of blood before they stopped the bleeding 13 hours later. Also got compartment syndrome & they did 3 faciotomies to release the pressure. I broke both tibias, both femurs, both hips & fractured my pelvis twice. A total of 15 fractures. I was in hospital for 3-1/2 months then 2 care homes for well over a year. I’ve got metal rods down my left tibia & both femurs & dynamic hip screws in both hips. The first Ilizarov frame was on my right lower leg for 3.5 years & was modified several times but the last of 6 fractures in that bone wouldn’t heal. They took the frame off & gave me a removable cast for 18 months. Still didn’t heal so they suggested amputating my leg. I hated that idea & got a second opinion from Sheffield Northern General Hospital. They operated & put a new Ilizarov frame on. A year & 9 days later x-rays showed it had healed. I now have a right leg 4cm shorter than my left so have a built up shoe & use sticks but consider it worth it because I can still drive a normal car. I’ve had 19 operations since my crash & have continuous pain but hey, I’m alive! Now my hips have died so I need 2 hip replacements. Also need a new left knee. The bike, while it lasted was phenomenal. I’m annoyed that the fastest I saw on the clock was 143mph. I wish I could say I’d taken it to it’s supposed top speed of 187mph but, alas, I never got the chance. The accident was considered to be 75% my fault for not knowing the turn off was there. I own the 2012 as well...And that power when launching is like no other...I will say its super heavy and after riding for about a hour or so, my back and arms are wore slam out!! I love the front look of the 2012 model. The headlights look mad aggressive and I fell in love with that cross-lane engine sound that sound like popped popcorn when riding...Took me a little while to get used to but I now LOVE the sound! I also had the bike lowered about a inch and a 1/4 so I would have no problems flat footing her being im 5'11...So yeah give me the 2012 model anyway of the week!
I have the 06 and have ridden the 09. I love the look of the 06 and the the torque of the 09, but overall I'd pick the 06 all day every day, twice on Sunday.
I just bought a 2011 R1 this past Friday and ive only gotten to ride it once since it’s not yet registered in my state, but once I do, im gonna have a lot of fun this summer
I had an 03 and can't imagine anything better. I'd love to ride a newer version but seriously, the reason I sold the 03 is because it was such a strong engine that everytime I got into it I saw my life flashing before my eyes. They are all amazing technology. I'm glad I also got to own great, great grandpa, the original 1980s FZ750.
I am , had a b1h for the past 19 years , got an 08 r1 now , & the kwak stays by its side , love that bike , & in 19 years & 40k miles its never let me down 😍
What are you talking about the newer sounds beautiful I have a 2013 r1 and it has a toce exhaust on it and it just sound beautiful put I do like the high pitched sound better though
I recently traded in my 2003 R1 for a 2012. Took me a week to get used to the more race track feel of the 12. But, once I did, I soon forgot about my 2003. I'll admit, at first I was missing how easy the 03 was to ride on the street. Gearing and cable controlled throttle were smoother in daily traffic. But, now it has been a month, and I will not ever look back with any inkling of regret. Fact is, the 2012 is safer and much more stable, especially at high speeds.
I totally agree with you,, the 2004 looks sexier, the 2012 sounds way better brutal, 2012 front/looks just doesn’t do it for me if i had to choose between them 2? id definitely go for 2004 model 👌
A vast difference between both the bikes. 04 has a longer wheel base hence stable. Sound if different due to crank positioning. The 2012 has more torque than the 04. Inline sound bugs might feel the 2012 sounds shit, it's because or the crank (yet again) its a derivative of the gp bike used by the DOCTOR. Crossplane has more torque than the 04 in the first band and it pumps up power till the limiter. 2004 is linear being an inline giving the lowest torque initially but screams to be a beast till the limiter. Verdict For power and agility with electronic aids, the 12 is good with a unique sound and delivery. I'm a guy standing tall at 6'4 would definitely prefer the 04. Power is still good, no elec aids but still worth for that underseat exhausts.
Try a -1+2 on the 04 with a stock ecu flash to remove the throttle 30% restriction. You will not be able to sleep for a month from all that rush. But yeah for more gadgets and brutal raw acceleration 12 takes the bacon. Yet 04 still faster
I'm sorry, I have to call foul on some of the info in this vid. The 04 R1 was the LIGHTEST R1 ever made at 379.2 lbs dry and 407.8 wet. The 2012 R1 comes in at 389.4 dry and a whopping 454.2 lbs wet. The stock 04 R1 posts a blistering 9.90 in the quarter and the 12 R1 does a 10.1. The cross-plane does have a cool sound and is more torquey but I still prefer the 5 valve sound of the 04. Both bikes are nice but I'd pick the cherry red 04 any day.
OK so I had the first R1 in 1998 and now I have a 2012 after > 200,000 miles on 3 Triumph Daytonas, a Ducati 1098 and 2 BMW S1000RRs. The 2012 R1 is by far my favorite bike, ever. I agree its not the lightest bike in the world; I love all R1s and think the '04 looks beautiful too. But what would possibly account for + 28.6 pounds vs. 64.8 pounds when wet? Maybe I missed that second gas tank with 9.5 extra gallons hiding under my seat??
The 2012 will yield better times...all day, that's why the crossplane crank has been in the bike since 2004 in MotoGP. There's a reason for the crossplane crank, the firing order allows a recovery time on parts of the tire that a flat plain does not. If losing a few horsepower meant being able to utilize All of it that made a huge difference. They had 240+ hp in 2004 with the crossplane. Overall both of these bikes here are really the same bike, Yamaha just made us wait 5 years to get the crossplane on the r1 in 2009. If you want to get on the highway and do 186 all day than an 08 or older is for you. If you're into the mountains, and the twisties/sport riding an 09 or newer would be for you. I have had a 2000, 2001, 2007, and my current one is a 2012. The majority of people riding these bikes now are finding the sportier aspect of it all and they are really focused on cornering and overall stability/control. It's cool to have 188hp, my 07 did, but it's not cool when you can't utilize it how you want to, that's where I love my 2012. The 12 is simply more forgiving and track focussed, it doesn't mean that it still won't get up to top speed absolutely no sweat. I lost complete interest with the body styles of anything after 2014 with the projector style front end. Hope you still have the red 04, my 07 was also lava/cherry red. Cheers
I have an 07 raven. My first was that cherry 04.. it always has that special place in my heart. Best looks r1 ever made and that high revs 5valves sound...sex. i am looking to buy one cherry for daily so i can keep my raven in the house as i love her to death. But 04 cherry... the most special r1 ever made in my book
Thanks for the comparison. I have 2 R6’s and I was thinking about getting a R1 but I’m not a fan of the crossplane sound. I gotta ride a gen 4 and see how I like it
Yo guys maybe you can help me. I'm debating between a 05 r1 or a 2014 r1. The 05 has two brothers exhaust( I dk if slip on or power Commander for either bikes) the 14 has gytr exhaust. The 05 is $4500 and the 14 is $8400. Is the crossplane and traction control enough to justify the $4000 difference?
Other than low end the 04 is faster. And not to mention doesn’t make you feel like you’re gonna get a tank slapper any second. After the 20 valve they went down hill
Love the mid-2000s R1's.. the front end to me is a lot nicer and better looking than the newer models.. I'm with you the headlights and the vents are a lot sexier on the 04.... the new ones are nice too of course technology is a lot better and more power.. but I would have to go with the 04...
I couldn't help but hear you say The bike has a POWER BAND. Incorrect, the bike has a BROAD power band. Huge tremendous difference! Only two strokes have power bands, four strokes have a very less intense power band, which is called a BROAD power band. Same thing goes for dirt bikes! And that's why a KX250 will demolish a KX450F any day of the week! By the way I'm not knocking your bike, I'm just making a correction.
Weekend Warrior: I have several videos about battery chargers on my channel. Search for the SP3 review I have on there and take the time to watch it. That video explains the numerous advantages to be had with a proper battery maintainer. Will save you a bunch of money in new batteries and really extend the life of your charging systems my man.
R1 is stupid fast bro. But try a zx14r some time. it feels like a teleporter. and incredibly stable at 160+ mph. the aerodynamics and extra weight really do make them more planted on the big end than the liter bikes.
@@MotoMaximus bro hop on my channel and check my acceleration video of mine. Then tell me you give a fuck about a tail on a sport touring bike after that. Lol. It's a sport tourer not a supersport. She's got wide hips. Super comfortable
I myself feel the 04/06 has more balls and better brakes. While the 09/14 handles great but really not any better like most say it does(not you though).
One feels like a muscle car (04) and the other feels like an import (12). Both feel great in their own unique way. I think many guys prefer the better handling and the sound of the 12. I can’t disagree with them there. Best is to own one of each generation, and enjoy them all equally. =)
I have both.. my 06 love her 3x more... more planted. Better position for my skinny ass and raw af and my raven is one of the most sexy bikes ever made . The 09 has much superior gearbox and geometry and better stopping power. U r right 09+ are lighter front vs 5v while 5v feels front heavy from times. But that 5v screamer sound... is almost art
2004-06 is better looking hands down. 2009-12 front and rear end is ugly af lol. I had a 2004 and 2006 R1, loved it so much I owned it twice. You also mentioned shifting more on the older R1, which I don’t find true at all. 1st gear goes up to 100mph, so city riding you really need to be in 1st-3rd gear mostly.
@@barontime74 it came with the bike from the previous owner… I have seen a few R1s with that screen, so it must have been around and more popular at that time frame.
2012 all day i hate when people say this bike sounds bad i have one my self with two brother exhaust full pipe it sounds fucking mean better then ducatti
I personally love the sound of the motor, especially during high revs. It sounds awesome! I wish I could say the same about the behavior of the motor, as it feels quite clunky below 6k. The gearbox is also not as smooth as on my 04. That said, you simply have to adjust to the bike. I ride both generations, sometimes in the same day. I love them both. The 04 reminds me of an American muscle car (mustang/camaro), and the 12 like an import muscle car (370z). I guess that’s the best way I can explain that one.
i think the gear box got to do with what kind of oil you use i changed my oil and my clutch became alot smoother i also flushed my ecu which makes a huge difference
Guess I'm the only one that hates the sound of V motorcycle engines and cross plane cranks. To me it sounds like an R3 with a slip on. I can't knock the performance gains of either, but the sound is enough to keep me away.
Yea i didn't want that firing order as it upsets the balance of the engine & didn't i read somewhere that they need a balancer shaft to compensate ? More weight , more to go wrong . I got my 08 & its ridiculously fast, tuned , yoshi's & lightweight like my B1H
Cross plane engine best sound ever the flat plane engines sounds like a toys motorcicles jajajajja i have a r1 2013 and it sounds amazing like a v8 car like a camaro or mustang very agresive the sound in the real life its beautefull
A R1 Crossplayne é mais forte né mais o ronco da flatplayne é mais bonito né,mais se eu pudesse ter as duas eu teria rs abração Deus abençõe 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🤜✊✊
It's too bad the 09-14 r1's are heavy and slow... they sound great but that's about it. Great bike don't get me wrong just don't expect to win a lot of races. Lol only reason I traded mine in for an s1000rr is cause I lost to an 04
Muhammad Ali Do you mean the 2017? If so, they kept the cross plane motor, but squeezed an additional 10 hp out of it. 190 hp on 2017 vs 180 on 2012. That is a lot of power in such a light bike.
TheWeekend Warrior no there's no way I raced a 13 r1 and destroy it on my s1k. And I raced my 09 r1 vs an 04 R1 and lost. I could see 04-08 r1 making 180 at the crank but not an 09-14 r1.
The Transit driver was negligent in 3 ways but it seems a biker who is ignorant of the road layout is considered worse than a driver who neglects their responsibilities. All witnesses said I was riding sensibly. Life’s rough at times but I praise God I’m still alive. I won’t ride again even though I still love bikes. I can’t afford the risk.
Cheers
2007 RN19 any day. But the RN32 looks so sexy... Unfortunately not as reliable as the RN19.
Nice video but i love 4 cilinder inline sound better
They are both inline 4 cylinders....lol
Yeah i prefer the 04-06 models and 05 has best color with blue under fairing
Love every single model of R1 💯
04 all day long
R1 yes sir
R1 how many miles is too much for buying a used R1?
My personal preference is not to buy anything with more than 10k on the odometer. Both, my 04 and the 12 had less than 6,000 miles when I got them.
MotoMaximus appreciate it bro💪🏽 ride safe
For sure! Any questions come up, hit me up. 🤙
i have the 05 in blue, the red is beautiful as well
i would love to have a 2014 facelift
Thanks for the comparison. I have 2 R6’s and I was thinking about getting a R1 but I’m not a fan of the crossplane sound. I gotta ride a gen 4 and see how I like it
You would like an S1000RR
I just bought a cherry red 04 after watching this video, needs TLC but love it.
Cheery I love it the sound much better than black one
Thanks for comparison, I own 2012 RN22. See you on the road.
What is the difference between 2003 Yamaha r1s and 2004 r1 ???
Everything. The frame, the engine, the intake, the exhaust, the styling.
@@MotoMaximus Thanks !!
2004 R1 is the best motorcyle..
Why is it sounding different?
Cause the 2012 r1 is a crossplane
I have a 2004 in red, straight pipes.
I love my Aegis.
How do his bikes get that almost like supercharger whine?
08 raven R1 RN19 still a quick one after 13years.
Fast, light, beautiful and very reliable. 👍
At what speed do you shift the gear from 1st to 2nd when you do city driving?..I’m confused about that on the R1
On the 04 around 25, on the 12 around 35….
I love both, I think if you spec them out the the 04 is a better bike. Sure the 2012 has more updated equipment but not better. I love my 05 R1
2012 for daysssss
and 2004 for nights
Yo guys maybe you can help me. I'm debating between a 05 r1 or a 2014 r1. The 05 has two brothers exhaust( I dk if slip on or power Commander for either bikes) the 14 has gytr exhaust. The 05 is $4500 and the 14 is $8400. Is the crossplane and traction control enough to justify the $4000 difference?
Get both =)
Ride both
2004 with 20 valves. Properly tuned would make that 2012 eat sh*t. Plus the 2012 sounds like garbage because of its crossplane crank 💩
2004 R1 is the best motorcycle in the World 👍👍👍
2004-2006
I couldn't help but hear you say The bike has a POWER BAND.
Incorrect, the bike has a BROAD power band. Huge tremendous difference! Only two strokes have power bands, four strokes have a very less intense power band, which is called a BROAD power band.
Same thing goes for dirt bikes!
And that's why a KX250 will demolish a KX450F any day of the week!
By the way I'm not knocking your bike, I'm just making a correction.
I was pretty specific in talking about the powerbands of both bikes in relationship to power delivery across the rpm range. They are vastly different.
2012! Yee!
1998 R1 is good also
oooh the werkes exhaust looks nice!!! i wonder if they name it for my 08 r1.
Sounds like the 2012 needs to be put on a battery maintainer. A little slow cranking there. Get that Schumacher SP3 my man.
It happens when you own 3 bikes and 5 cars... =)
But ya, it may be time for a new battery after this season.
I was just checking one out. Love the front end, the lights…. but can’t get over the tail of that bike. It looks like a zx6. Cool bike though…
@@MotoMaximus bro hop on my channel and check my acceleration video of mine. Then tell me you give a fuck about a tail on a sport touring bike after that. Lol. It's a sport tourer not a supersport. She's got wide hips. Super comfortable
07 R1 is the best.
Yess
2012 is about 40lbs heavier than 04
Thanks for the info.
1:14 Totally agree about the head lights. It reminds me of the aliens from "War of the worlds" more or less ;)
Still a beautiful bike
I love the bug eyes
red its better than black
I got a red 2014 Yamaha r1
I'm looking to buy one now and he want 5k then I can get. 04 r1000 2800 but need a lil work so thinking of the r6
98 R1 all day long
Nice video
R1 inline better i like r1 2004 sound and desain the best
Would you say the 04 is still a good buy?
I personally think so. The 04 is like a muscle car, raw power without any electronic nonsense. You can get them for a really good $$ too.
Bro where did u get those werks exhausts at?? Please get back to me!! Thanks man
Revzilla used to carry them, but you can find them on: www.accessoryinternational.com/product/competition-werkes-wy1009-gp-slip-on-exhaust.html
I got 2003 r1! 04 aiight..body not better then 03 tho or performance wise..yours is nice tho
2004 👍
Skip to 3:38 for the exhaust
2004-06 is better looking hands down. 2009-12 front and rear end is ugly af lol.
I had a 2004 and 2006 R1, loved it so much I owned it twice. You also mentioned shifting more on the older R1, which I don’t find true at all. 1st gear goes up to 100mph, so city riding you really need to be in 1st-3rd gear mostly.
And I thought crossplane was the only major difference!
I love the sound of the 04 better
Is it just me or is the seight higher on the 2012?
Stock, it’s about an inch higher...
Is 2012+R1 comes with abs or not?
I think they introduced ABS in 2015
the 2004 r1 got a lower seat-height right? im a very short rider and maybe thats an option
I just went and measured. 2004 sits at 31.5 and 2012 at 32.5 (at the lowest point). How tall are you?
wow thank you ^^
im 5 foot 3 with a long inseam and with my daytona roadstar gtx i can nearly flatfoot my rc390 with 32,3 seat-height
You will be fine on either bike. Here is my wife (5'4") on the 2012: ruclips.net/video/ABZPHwSy66o/видео.html
ok thats cool, thank you very much i really appreciate that
what windscreen do you have on the 04?
04 is a Yamaha Racing and 12 is a Zero Gravity
@@MotoMaximus where did you get it?
I’ll have to look at different oil on the next change, which is coming up. The ECU has already been flashed, so should be good there.
awesome ride safe bro
Guess I'm the only one that hates the sound of V motorcycle engines and cross plane cranks. To me it sounds like an R3 with a slip on. I can't knock the performance gains of either, but the sound is enough to keep me away.
Yea i didn't want that firing order as it upsets the balance of the engine & didn't i read somewhere that they need a balancer shaft to compensate ? More weight , more to go wrong . I got my 08 & its ridiculously fast, tuned , yoshi's & lightweight like my B1H
R1 2001 looks sexy.. Cause of color..
Every R1 past 2004-2006 is ugly AF. My opinion. I'll stick to my RN12 for eternity. Most sexy and good looking bike out there.
Cross plane engine best sound ever the flat plane engines sounds like a toys motorcicles jajajajja i have a r1 2013 and it sounds amazing like a v8 car like a camaro or mustang very agresive the sound in the real life its beautefull
Where can I get the same rear seat cowl for the 04?
www.ebay.com/itm/5VY-W0771-10-00-Ya-aha-R1-OEM-Red-Solo-Cowl-Back-Seat-Replacement-YZFR1-2004-200-/334393084895?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0
Part number 5VY-W0771-10-00
The OEM are getting harder to come by.
Crossplane engine feels more arrogant (like the difference between american muscle car V8s and ferrari V8s)
I love my 13.
Lol only reason I traded mine in for an s1000rr is cause I lost to an 04
2012 R1 is lighter than the s1000rr, where are you getting your specs from?
TheWeekend Warrior the 09-14 r1 weighs 470lbs. 15+ s1000rr weighs 450lbs. I've had both bikes and the r1 is heavier
Look At Me Luis I get 450 here for the 2012. Your R1 needed to lose some weight, it was too fat. =)
My 2012 is about 450. I can easily pick it up from the ground. I am not a fan of rocks, unless I am throwing them at something.
buel! He said the 12 more power but I own a a 12 and a 05 r1 and the 05 pulls them bikes pretty good!rather go with the 05 raven 👍
Did they change the motors for the newer r1's?
Muhammad Ali Do you mean the 2017? If so, they kept the cross plane motor, but squeezed an additional 10 hp out of it. 190 hp on 2017 vs 180 on 2012. That is a lot of power in such a light bike.
09-14 r1 makes 160 hp at the crank
178 bhp @ 12,500 rpm
TheWeekend Warrior no there's no way I raced a 13 r1 and destroy it on my s1k. And I raced my 09 r1 vs an 04 R1 and lost. I could see 04-08 r1 making 180 at the crank but not an 09-14 r1.
178hp is the crank rating, not rear wheel.
