Yup. subliminal message. 10pm and I am cracking one open.
I worked on VW and Audi for 22 years, and this was very common, 9 Times out of 10 this is caused by a blown oil cooler, pressure testing reveals no leaks and will not leak into oil pan.
It’s a easy fix, good luck with it brother!
it should not be common except vw and audi. Never have that on a honda.
Just recently I had a car do this. Pushed oil into the cooling system from a perforated oil cooler. What a pain. Took a day to flush the cooling system multiple times including draining the block multiple times.
I have no experience with these engines but pressures in the cooling system were so high a hose blew off, and he also showed cylinder 1 was unusually clean. The volume of milkshake coming back out the reservoir was impressive! Wouldn't a small leak inside the oil cooler simply cause the milkshake without the drama? I thought high pressures are a sign that you've got cylinder head pressures inside the cooling system.... After all, oil pressure from the oil pump is usually only about 20-40 psi, cooling pressure is 15 psi, so you shouldn't be blowing hoses off....
@@ayayoutuber Try driving that Honda off road some time, you'll break the suspension in quick order; A Volkswagen won't give a shit. There is a reason a VW is typically 300 pounds heavier for the same size than a Honda or Toyota....
That is an engine, a motor car has an engine, unless it is an unspeakable electric motor car, then it has motors. As the electric car was first, I suppose all naming of parts should follow their lead !
Car is fighting you because you didn’t acknowledge it by saying Das Auto 🤣
Lol
This IS what happens when you don't use the car's preferred pronouns...

Insufficient fahrvergnuven.....
@Rainman Ray: First, about the car, I'm gonna say that the Vetta has a cracked cylinder head -- I don't think it's just the gasket. Why? Because all the plugs looked the same.
As for the difference between "engine" and "motor," they usually refer to the actual potential energy that gets converted: Electricity to mechanical energy; and a fuel of some kind, to mechanical energy. In both cases, the conversion is potential, _p,_ converted to kinetic energy, _k:_ P --> K, depending on the process, which determines loss of energy, such as friction.
However, engines are more than just gas and diesel; they can also include liquified natural gas (LNG), steam (i.e., "steam engine," which actually wasn't used just on trains, but also in mining, and even on a car a century ago called the "Stanley Steamer." That company today is a carpet cleaning company. And, Jay Leno has not one, but 3 Stanley Steamer cars in his garage!), and even "wood gas", alcohol, and kerosene.
For me, the diagnostic part of videos are hands down the best part! Solving the puzzle is fun lol
Even if it’s wrong ? Doubt this is a head issue and most likely stems from a leaking oil cooler. It now may be more of an issue due to overheating and clogging of cooling system but almost always these suffer from oil cooler failure. While a flush of entire system and replacement of oil cooler and lines repaired may fix it the chance of trouble free service is slim.
The fact I myself have worked on this exact same VW and the fact I condemned it to have a bad head gasket or oil cooler and its now in your extremely capable hands is just amazing. I m glad our shop wouldnt touch it haha. Or maybe im thinking of another VW haha
Or some other 800 VW's...
The fact you think this is the exact car lmfao Cus this is the only 2.0 VW in the world, right?

Epic understatement. "There 's the leak!" as the engines disappears in a cloud of steam and crud! Thanks for the laugh Ray. Made my afternoon!
Ray's diagnostic and observational skills always amaze me! 🤣
I once had an Army buddy come from Minnesota, traveling to Missouri to come visit me, when he did;
the Datsun truck did a WHOLE bunches of overheating!!! Well, upon a good inspection, I found out
that he had a bad head gasket. Well, there was no antifreeze down in the engine oil, nor was there any
oil found in the coolant or the radiator. There where no signs of freeze plug issues either! There was no
water pump signs of pissing out all over the place either! So I went over these things with my buddy
step by step and methodically! Since he wasn't mechanically inclined nor did he have boat loads of
money in his bank account and he just barely had enough for the trip and back, I proposed to him a
solution of "Water Glassing" that bad boy of an engine with a double dose, and flushed the rest of the
coolant out and then completely took the thermostat out. The thermostat had been tested as well
out of the car and it was still good too! So, there was either a hairline crack in the cylinder head and/
or a head gasket problem or both. This was back in 1980. As I said, water glassing took place, and
upon putting the thermostat housing back on with new gasket and no thermostat. The coolant system
received some water pump sealant and lubricant along with new coolant and new radiator cap too!
For the remaining time of his visit I had him ram around to see some other of his friends to see if things
would hold before his return to Minnesota. I made sure that he had at least a couple anti freeze jugs
to be able to carry water in as well. All was a go for him and his wife as they returned to Minnesota.
The truck still made it in one piece. So, this quick fix took hold pretty good just when my buddy called
me from Minnesota. Needless to say, he either sold it or traded it for another vehicle. He wasn't about
to try and repair that truck no how and no way! He was however quite pleased that he made the entire
trip back. He even drove it for at least two more weeks until he found another vehicle to replace it.
Prodding & poking the coolant reservoir reminded me of a proctology exam. Ray, you are a certified VW cooling system proctologist! 🤣🤣🤣

Traditional day I miss episodes like this
The non turbo 2.0 is probably one of the most solid engines VW has ever made, they really don't have any major issues other than a lack of hp
Unfortunately the engine is surrounded by bean-counter cost-cutting components.
@@dantesinfernopurgatory7826 yeah, though the MK3 generation of cars are better in that regard
¡Exactamente!!!
In my personal opinion, it doesn't matter which way it's called Engine or motor. That is an argument that's unneeded because they are relatable and everyone knows to a point that that's not something to really argue about with small differences. I hope that made sense. Lol. One of the three cars that I work on (because my buddy thinks he knows cars and does not🤦♂️) is a 2013 VW passat 5 cylinder, (I currently can't remember size of motor) has been going thru problems of over heating. The heater core, the water outlet housing, thermostat, system has been flushed twice. But yet it's still overheating, there's a little of dried coolant on top of the trans right under the water outlet housing. It's not leaking from there either, I've sat and watched it run for almost an hour straight each time and can't find any leaks anywhere! The only code that comes up on either of my scan tools is a permanent EVAP code. I do know quite a bit when it comes to working on cars, seeing I've been working on them for 31-32 years now. This car has me feeling like I'm constantly walking into a brick wall😂

OH boy! Oh boy! Oh boy, my "Gravity" is back. I love it Rainman, thank you so much.
Ray I had an old diesel VW Passat that had similar symptoms. I first thought the head gasket was gone. But the little oil cooler that sits above the oil filter was the culprit. I fitted a new one after flushing the system and the problem was sorted.
this is not a diesel numbnuts
You've got Mr. Snappy! A wonderful and valued bff.
Don't worry too much Ray, those spark plug wires ALWAYS break. They aren't cheap, but the dielectric grease will keep new ones from sticking.
I have a 2003 VW New Beetle with the 2.slow.
Also, anything plastic breaks. I was surprised that none of those plastic/rubber parst didn't disintegrate when you looked at them.
I had the thermostat housing crack on me and lose coolant. I was able to nurse it home by keeping it full of coolant, then later I had it towed to a shop.
I asked the guy, since he was all up in there, to please do the timing belt and water pump.
It was a good thing I did!!!
It turns out, that cracked thermostat housing SAVED my ENGINE!!!!! The timing belt was shredded, and the water pump came out in pieces. All that, the tow bill, and full replacement of the outer belts cost me $1100. My serpentine belt is grooved on both sides and is over a C-note alone. I also asked him to make sure the replacement water pump had a METAL impeller! Always replace with better than OEM!!! The OEM is FREAKING PLASTIC!!!!
Because Volkswagen.
PS...
IMHO....
It's ENGINE. Because engine is actually the shortened version of "internal combustion engine".
A "motor" is electric.
Don’t know if you know, Mk7 (2015 and later) Golf’s on the MQB platform (not sure what year Jettas, etc.) use a PLASTIC OIL PAN.
Because Volkswagen.
The motor I class as the whole car.
The engine is the unit that makes the motor go vroom vroom.
Hello John, got a new motor😂 remember Alexei Sayle?
That really did look like a broken ringland and bent up piston ring on the borescope. It also looked like there was a ring of rust and crud like the car had sat for a while with coolant/water in the cylinders. I think that engine is toast!
Yep. Looks like a chink out of the edge of the piston & the ring poking up.
Methinks this engine severely overheated & is dead as a dodo.
Those are normal grooves on piston top. It was visible all of then have it.
I think it's just the piston crown design.
If that was the case there would be more problems than that.
Looked like a broken ring to me

I can't wait to hear an see what's next with project jeep. I like how you thru that into the beginning of the video❤❤
I'm UK based and I'm very much in the camp that anything that combusts internally is an engine (Internal Combustion Engine and all that) and anything powerd by electricity is a motor.
I used to race electronic RC cars at a fairly competitive level and noticed that any US drivers used to call the motor an engine in them and the engine a motor in the nitro powered models
Hahahaha best blur of refreshment I've never seen.

LOL what a mess! good luck on fixing that one!!!!
I've worked on VW for 25 years and it always makes me laugh to watch other people work on them. They get a bad rap but a lot of times the engineers are thinking about the techs in the way they design things as exampled by those angled spark plugs. Don't get me started on the stretch bolts tho...mostly the reason you see oil in the coolant is due to the oil cooler on the filter housing. Run some blue devil through there and replace the cooler, all will be good.
Would that explain the "steam cleaned cylinders"? (and if so how? - that doesn't make sense to me)
@@michelleshaw337 I only saw one 'steam cleaned' cylinder and as many of those I've had apart it's pretty normal for the passenger side piston to be the "cleanest". I will say, I've worked on VW for so long because they are expensive to have someone else fix. In this case, I wouldn't go any further unless I was working on my own car. The oil cooler is about 100 bux and blue devil is cheap enough.
Engineers thinking about tech? What, like timing chains that let go early, and are at the back of the engine?
Do you think plugs are angled for convenience or flame travel ? (??)
@@davidnorton5887 hmmm. All my VWs with chains have over 200k no issues. Rather that than an airbag kill me.
Once I had a Renault, which started to smoke while on the highway. Engine failed, I just could make it to a gas station in time. Damage: A leaking head gasket! Repair costs were like €600, without any warranty. At a scrap yard I found an entire good working engine for €500, so I replaced the entire engine and had some more fun with the car!
Ut oh the Jeep returns lol. Why is it when Ray says whoa I get excited for a good video? Anyone else says it and I’m like yeah no big deal. Let the gravity and brake kleen begin.
Based on what the coolant looks like, someone put the wrong coolant in that vehicle. I had a 2002 VW beetle with the 1.8l and I did a lot of damage putting "universal" coolant in it as a top up.
I drive a 2018 Peterbilt 579 with a MX 13. It comes from the factory with TRP extended life Nitrate free Organic Acid coolant. One of our other drivers put a coolant in it that wasn't compatible. The coolant frothed up and looked like it had whipped cream in it. The factory coolant was not compatible was not compatible with what was put in it and it became corrosive destroying the water pump, thermostat, sensors, gaskets ECT. The truck spent a week and a half at a dealership getting flushed and having parts replaced.
There is no universal coolant, watch what you put in your car. If you mix coolants to get by, flush and refill as soon as possible to avoid damage. If your going to change from factory coolant to something that claims to meet manufacturer specifications, flush before you fill!!!!!
I love seeing your shows on RUclips. I think you are at one great mechanic
Good morning Mr Ray hope y'all have a good day
i called that oil/coolant mix "forbidden peanut butter milkshake" at work a few days ago when someone came in with a jeep that was jacked up like that. He only wanted his radiator flushed, and I told him the radiator wasn't the only issue but he still only wanted the radiator sorted out lol
I'm pretty sure the rubber boots on the plug wires are engineered to break because I've rarely ever had one that didn't. Helps the part's business.
I regard those leads as a service part, buy them with the plugs, and change every 30 000 km.
How much also is it a sign that those plugs have run far too hot at some time?
Engineered Obsolescence
There is a special tool for removing that type of boot. I had a plastic one and finally bought the metal version. Gave the metal one to a new VW mechanic. Maybe the plastic one can go to Fl.
1:18 and I'm like, "Oh noes! Another PT Cruiser!"
They cannot be interchanged. A motor runs on electricity and an engine runs on gas, diesel etc. I was taught this in auto mechanics in high school freshman year about 59 years ago. Always kept that in mind. Great job Ray. Keep up the good work.
Excellent age old question…and captivating vid! Thanks RMR!!
I use them interchangeably usually but I have been told that Motors are electric driven, Engines produce their own power. A starter Motor starts and engine. but as an A&P it is a powerplant.

That leak find was classic 11:10 on.
This would be a great mayonnaise production plant if only they'd used food grade oils.
Not sure about the newer 2.0's. However the factory ones from the early series used a plastic impeller on the water pump. They would give up and crack apart. As noted the solution was to change out the water pump at the same time as the timing belt would be done. (And after market water pump with a steel impeller would be strongly recommended.)
The huge mess also screams "Antifreeze additive"... Blocks the radiator and compounds the mess.
Last comment: When servicing the cooling systems in these engines. It's imperative to only use the factory coolant. DO NOT use any "universal coolant" or "Works on all".. Because that's 100% baloney. Some oddity about VW engines when 'works on all' coolant is used= The water jacket, hoses, radiator, every internal cooling part slowly gets a layer of this white paste build up. Last 2.0 VW engine we had apart used that universal garbage. We wound up replacing the bulk of the cooling system as it was choking off the small ports in the radiator. (Ever do a radiator in a VW beetle? Picture what should be an easy radiator job, and add disassembly of the entire front of the body clip.)
VW Beetles didn't have radiators.
@@ednorton47 Creo seguramente que NO en los refrigerados directamente por aire (motor trasero) pero SÍ en los "New BEETLE" (motor delantero refrigerado por medio de líquido)
I seen that before. Reminded me after reading your post. Plastic crap cracking and replacement was metal. Buddy of mine told me about VW being picky about fluids to. Use there coolant and synthetic oils. Even the power steering fluid. If you don't, your screwed. Pumps fail, lines blow out etc etc. He said they are the pickiest and one of the more expensive cars to maintain. He had one. It broke down in a cell phone dead spot. He walked a 100 feet up the highway to get a cell signal. Drunk driver hit the car totalled it. He was facing the other direction heard a load noise, car was airborne. Flipped it over the guardrail. Guys insurance paid him over 10 times what he had into the car. Lol.
Been there done that 😂 fishing all the plastic bits out of the engine sucks
The good ole 2.slow. That engine was great. Hard to kill, and if you did the water pump and timing kit properly at 100k mi, you only ever had to change the oil and maybe wires for the next 200k mi. The whole car would rot away back into dust around a mkIII 2.0 engine 😂

The oil cooler is your problem needs a coolant flush and needs a cooler and head strip now he's overheated it, Ray
Thanks for the clean piston head tip my Peugeot 207 that I have just bought seams to have a similar problem with over heating and signs of a coolant sealer in the system , hence most likely head gasket blown. So the car can go back to the car sales where it was brought from last week
With 100k miles and 10+ years, that thing is probably toast at this point. I love how the Jetta handles, but it's not a long term car in my opinion and experience.
Taste oil LOL, When I was in the Navy we had to test gear oil,. As I was drawing samples a new kid asked what I was doing, so I told him. He proceeded to ask 20 questions. After explaining the whole process he continued to pester me, so I opened the bottle in my hand, stuck my finger into it and taste test it. I got yelled at for making him sick, he claimed I was drinking it.
Popped the head, plus you will need to replace water pump as well, because that probably is the failure that killed it. Needs a new radiator as well, and a good coolant flush as well, especially heater core. Yes it will run with those broken boots, even though by me the set of leads as aftermarket is $20, you see many with just the rubber and no shell.
At this point, he may as well just rebuild the whole engine
All the internal bearings and bushing are trashed, include radiator and hoses, egr and hoses. Crusher time
it doesn't need all that when i work at VW I'd do about 3 of these a month oil cooler , reservoir bottle, an about 6 flushes with water an shout then when it's clean i'd do a Combustion Leak Test an never had a 2.0l fail except for one VR6

All you need now is that ring tone even if you don't get calls set it to go off every 10 minutes 😅
I think cars are/were powered by an internal combustion engine. Of course in the UK we also use the term Motor car! but I think it's an engine.
As a VAG specialist I would have lubricated the plug holes first to reduce the tapping force needed. Adding a bit of lube makes all plugs slide right out. With these small blocks it is best to cover the intake with a rag or your hand to reduce the annoying noise coming out of it. At the end of service it is common to mount the intake properly.
A pro tip is to clean all the sludge to make it nicer for the next guy to work on!

I would like to say it doesn't bother me that people use engine and motor interchangeably, but it does and I can be pedantic about it at times. As an engineer by training, I feel compelled to explain that things with internal combustion are engines and that things with magnets and windings (and therefor electricity) are motors.
I'm amused that the English (you know, the ones who invented the language) used to refer to cars/automobiles as "Motors". As in "Ask Jeeves to bring the Motor 'round to the front."
That's the way I was taught.
I think ‘engine’ is too complicated for people to think about
Yes sir. My father taught me that as a child, then again he was an electronic engineer
What do you think of outboard motors? LOL
Not speaking for the majority of us old timers, but if asked, I think many would say 'motor'. Can't recall anyone calling them an engine back in the late sixties on up til I stopped getting grease under my nails.
I may be ocd, but it drives me nuts to let leaves and crap build up under the hood and below the windshield 😊.
I feel the same way about letting all that shit build up.
It's a virtually guaranteed way of getting clogged up water drains and then perforation rust in critical areas...
Cool , That's like when I relieve the pressure from my Instant Pot without the goop.🤙
Engine vs motor. Interchangeable in my opinion. It has been called a motor for over a hundred years. IE: motorcrarft, motor manual, motorway, etc.
Steam engine, diesel engine, gas engine, aircraft engine, etc.
Typically when electric it’s referred to as electric motor with electric being the operating word.
For instance when your wipers don’t work is it an electric wiper engine?
Mayonnaise on the inside of the oil filler lid or coolant expansion tank is a blown gasket, but might not be the root cause. Generally if there is coolant circulation failure due to broken belt or coolant pump failure the engine runs hot, the cylinder head warps and the head gasket no longer seals. Once the mayonnaise circulates then everything needs flushing out. Not having mayonnaise on the oil filler lid probably means that water did not get on the oil but it is no guarantee since when the engine gets hot any water in the oil steams off. The fact the coolant has blown out is also a good indicator that it did not blow into the oil.
Question - have you ever had anybody cry when you told them what it would take to fix their car?
As soon as he took that air tube off and I saw liquid inside and coming out the throttle body I thought "head gasket". I had a 97 Ford Contour that severely overheated because it had an air lock in the cooling system after I replaced the water pump. When the head gasket blew it blew intermix all the way through the intake and into the air box. Good news is it only cost me $250 to get the head machined. Of course that was back in 2008.
On aircraft we call it a powerplant because it produces power for several different systems, not just locomotive power. Great video.
In tanks, the engine and transmission together is a Powerpack.
That's nonsense. Every time I sit in the simulator I blow a motor, and I'm not talking fellatio....

Motor v Engine: The dictionary uses the terms interchangeably now. I was taught that an engine creates its own power from an internal combustion, a motor requires an outside power source to do the same work. Keep up the great work Ray, love watching your channel. Say hi to the Wife Unit. 😀
No engines are powered by a fuel there are steam engines and jet engines so not all internal combustion. Engines are by definition motors too as motors are defined as producing motion. Engines are like a subset of motors that dont include electric or spring. When it comes to cars you can use either but even if technically correct nobody says jet motor or steam motor so i wouldnt personally for a car either unlesss it is electric.

Hello Ray, I am sure you know this already, but just in case. All German vehicles are picky, there are generally no cheap fixes, except air cooled beetles. Even my little A2 diesel was picky about prechamber cup placement. So, remember, if a part is known to fail replace it while you have the engine apart, i.e. even if the oil cooler looks good, (i don't know how anyone could tell on this vehicle) replace it. Just finished a Tiguan Turbo and water pump, I told the customer he needed to replace the intake and injector seals (DI Engine) if he wanted me to do the job, this is how to avoid a comeback in 6 months.
IMHO
Blue Mule
Can we see more carnage of this?
Is there an unlisted part 2?
In the UK vehicles were known as motorcars, just thought Id throw that out there. Great vids Ray keep it up, thanks.
Or old bangers!
Also rust buckets
Yes, but a gentleman does not go motoring about after dark.
yet another outstanding video ray Good day to you Ray love this video but the most important thing is to have yourself a great day .
Old faithful action going on there lol
Coax it out like you would a new pet hiding under the sofa lol
It's a petrol combustion engine, motors are electrical.
You could skim/reface the cylinder head to take out any warping of the gasket face, and refit with new gaskets, timing belt/chain etc and probably replace the thermostat unit and flush the cooling system and do an oil and filter change.
ever since starting your shop half the jobs you get are coolant and oil mixture jobs lol
The milkshake brings all the cars to his garage
Love the new intro.
Oh, it's due for an oil change Ray!
People use both interchangeably, but the difference is that motors run on electricity and engines run on combustion. The engine converts various forms of fuels into mechanical force, while the motor transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy.
So is an air starter a motor or an engine?
As always we enjoy watching you having yourself a great day. 🤔blurring out coke can. It looks like we’ll have another Jetta episode, keep’m coming
That engine is toast,, can't remember the last time i saw so much chocolate milkshake outside of a makkies
Ray, you need a cooling system pressure tester-if it was a blown head gasket you just let it sit under pressure for 15 mins and watch the coolant run down the cylinder walls with a borescope. You might want to upgrade your borescope too, you can get one with an HD camera with a side camera built in for less than $150 online, a high quality image makes a big difference when you see a chunk of carbon on top the piston and can't make heads or tails if it's something else. ALSO, I think on that year range the cooling systems on passats and jettas are really bad about electrolysis, heater cores are readily available through the dealer because they clog up and lack heat output. Our local dealer told us something along the lines of if the car needs it's 3rd heater core then they quote a radiator and engine due to lack of flow. I think you're in FL so I'm guessing people just don't use the heater as much there and may not be as known of an issue. Also ALSO, those spark plug boots are made to be removed using a tool(of course), look up a CTA 3055. I only know this because a customer supplied one for spark plug replacement on a Eurovan VR6 with waste spark ignition, he got new plug wires anyway because they had carbon tracking I think-had to take out the cooling fans to do it if I remember correctly, it was dumb. I've never had to diag a failed oil cooler for these engines, or any VW so far fortunately, I've also never seen a head gasket failure on these 2.0L but if they ran it out of coolant then it's definitely possible. Would love to see more of this car if you go deeper into diagnosis, I'm not totally convinced the cyl 1 piston was completely clean, as you were pulling the scope out the left side of the piston looked like it had similar carbon build up to the others but you would know better since you've been in there on and off camera. I don't get these engines in that often, mostly the TSI's and those have PLENTY of issues, so I find this case interesting. Anyway don't let it get to your head just keep up the good work 👍
Because of the cooling system contamination, Ray does not want to damage his tools for leak detection with said contamination.
Ray already has a cooling system pressure tester, IIRC. But he stated early on in the video that he can't do any cooling system tests because of all the oil contamination.
I'd forgotten that VW brought back the 1980's/1990's/early 2000's Engine for the base Jetta. Time capsule!
This poor Jetta had too much Taco Bell.
😂
No, it had too many vanilla milkshakes from Dairy Queen.
when I was in auto shop class in the 1970s, my instructor was adamant that a motor was run on electricity and an engine was run on some type of fuel . I dont remember what his response was when I pointed out that the can of oil...cans back in the day, not bottles, said "MOTOR OIL" so I call it an engine unless its running on electricity
At least we know now that Ray is a coke man and not pepsi 😁🤣
And a great job hiding it...hahahaha
Its a Sad day for sure...
🙉🙈🙊
Man has great taste! I cringe every time I see someone drinks Dr.Pepper. Tasted in once there will be no second time. I take a steaming hot Fanta way before a Dr.Pepper.
He must be trying to "be less white".
