Man what a special guitar. Make the walls shake buddy.
Damn 😩😳
I'm working on it, Robert. Thanks very much.
Ahhh, I see what you did there
This guitar single handedly ruined Goodwill guitar auctions for EVERYONE but Matthew

So pleased for you mate! Absolutely killer 🙌🏻
It sounds so good! I think it would be a killer idea if he played a riff from every decade its been alive for to break it in! :)
Chris, it sounds a bit like that amazing LP authentic 50s gold top of yours, the one with P-90s, which is one of the greatest tones I’ve ever heard.
@@carlbaumeister3439 Oh, man. That’s not mine sadly. It belong(ed) to a shop in Frances. Long sold unfortunately 😢
That is undeniably one of the sweetest guitars in your collection, Matt.
The Vintage Guitar Gods are beaming with joy for bringing this thing back from the dead.
Thanks Chris. I've always enjoyed watching you play those vintage LPs.
There is a reason those frets were wore down to the wood, glad you brought another one back to life!
Exactly! Only guitars with the very best tone get played that much!
If that guitar could talk you`d have to cover your kids ears i think. but that restore work. wow, masterful job. only thing i can tell, by listening, is those new frets make it sound a tad bright but, you can dial in the proper tone simple enough.
I regret I only have one👍 for your comment
This is nearly identical to a "T" to the guitar my buddy's dad purchased for his his other son returning from the Vietnam War...........as a surprise for him.............but his son never made it home and the dad in all his grief hung the classic instrument on his son's bedroom wall. This son obviously loved music and guitar and at the time (early 70s) this was his son's dream guitar that his coalminer father saved up pennies to buy (probably $200-300 back in the day). What a sad yet moving tribute. I often thought of writing a story about this experience but Matthew here and his obvious admiration for this very classic instrument brings back positive memories to this poor father's grief. Thanks!! Jim C.
I appreciated you sharing this sir, genuinely.
Jim, thanks for sharing your story that deserves to be told.
That's a sad but powerful story, especially to me and anyone else that has lost a guitar playing Son. Tears in my eyes. The Vietnam War was my era but I didn't have to go. I knew many that did. I've reflected on it many times and have reached the conclusion that it was a total waste. Young men let down by their government.
For anyone watching this with some cheap guitar, fear not! Keep playing, the worse the action the better you will be when you get a nice guitar. NEVER envy another musicians guitar or feel bad because your is worth less than $100. Some of the greatest songs were written on battered acoustics.
hahha love the truth bomb :D
And if you dig the p90 sound but don’t want to drop a lot of dough, try some cheapo p90s. There are some unlikely gems out there.
Like the story of Prince and his Hohner Madcat.
I absolutely love the sound of P-90’s. Great for hard rock and wonderful sustain. Can be warm or a
sharp thunderous overdrive. The bridge pup just growls like it has a built in Tube Screamer. I love them. I have guitars with humbuckers and PAF’s. But I always end up grabbing a light P-90 guitar.
Reminds me of when I was young, and had no money. I had a guitar that was just playable, but it was mine.
By the expression on your face it would be fair to say she's a keeper.
been DESPERATE to hear the latest on this!!
"I'm not a Les Paul guy", he says as he's busy wiping the floor with the rest of us every note he plays. Glad it was a successful rehabilitation.
So glad for you ! Now you can enjoy it and have the joy of owning a 58’ Les Frinkin’ Paul !! Hale Yea ! Good for you.
He's a Slide Guy, that much is apparent!! Wow!
Dude has soul without a doubt !! Did everyone else feel that too??
I would check my pulse if I watched this video and didn't feel it, @@Plowguitarist.
Better late than never. And the LP Special is sort of cooler than the “regular” LP, and one that goes back to its origins is amazing!
That LP straight into the Bassman is one of the best blues tones I've ever heard - super warm bass with SO much top end clarity
Do we know it's going through the Bassman?
@@andrewsmith7543 yeah, he said so in the video
@@XjAmMaN2390X Thanks!
Thank you🙏🏻🙏🏻
Yeah man, giving me chills.
Its stuff like this that just proves to me time and time again that this is the best RUclips channel on guitars. Such appreciation and care for vintage equipment. And absolutely fantastic playing to match.
dont ever sell this. ever. ever. ever.
I don't think that will be an option.
acoustically that rings like a bell, what a piece you got there. well done mate
Thats the attraction of old wood.
@@ProSimex84 yea man youre right, i got a nearly 100 year old paramount archtop and nothing has come close for me yet for tone.
Thanks. I could immediately notice that as well.
What we've learned: " a gigbag works better in some cases"
haha... "cases"
Probably more affordable to ship as well since the gig bag is lighter.
Nice little play on words he used there, and forgot to say “no pun intended”!
That looks like the Rolls Royce of Gigbags! 👍🏼
Not me. I would NOT ship a 1958 Gibson in a gig bag. NFW. He got lucky.
Watching this guitar get a second life makes me feel like I’m watching one of those abandoned puppy videos where the mangy mutt turns into an awesome doggy and gets a new home. ☺️
Mangy mut accurately describes this guitar lol.
@@MatthewScottmusic Be a pre cool nickname for them. The old mutt. She may be out of its prime but their bark is still as powerful!
9:05 Evidence that he’s not a Les Paul guy... instinctively reaches for the Strat pickup selector! 🤣
That's some Derek Trucks slide stuff there, too
thats a good eye...interesting. sure has a great tone this guitar and amp combo
Yeah, I'm the opposite. I can't play a strat to save my life.
@8:22 At least he admits it Stephen, but good eye, man!!!
@@rangerstl07 Oh, I think that claim is disputed. He has some nice tones - can't be helped with special, but this kid is not even on the same planet as D. Trucks. He played basic grade 1 slide.
I wasn’t a tele guy till I owned one. I then wasn’t a LP guy till I owned one😎
Same, I was NEVER a strat guy until I bought one almost impulsively once, and now I’m in love, haha
I bought a les paul when I was 20... hated it, sold it 3 years later, eventually played one 20 years later and fell in love... I guess it an age thing...
@@blairdrummond5043 I was the opposite. I was a strat guy until I owned several and couldn't get along with any of them. Now I'm a tele guy and a Les Paul guy. Who knew?
I’ve tried owning several strats Ended up trading them all away... just couldn’t get happy with them no matter the pick up combo.
@@fredfabris7187 yeah I’m not a strat fan, the volume knob is in the way, constantly turning it down accidentally
The NEXT most important aspect beyond restoring this guitar is: "Who is the unknown legend who played it?" Their soul is making us smile.
That guitar sounded good when you initially strummed it acoustically, a good sign. However, when I heard electricity running through it, Holy Smokes! Yeah, Keef or Ronnie will be calling you soon, LOL!
That's a keeper, period!
(Your slide outro sounded so good!)
That old wood with those old pickups.... It sings, cries, rejoices, howls and moans like a magnificent creature.
Theres nothing more pleasing than playing dynamically with P90s, we need longer jams in your videos!
That guitar is gnarly lookin' in the best possible way. It's what 'relic'd" guitars wished they looked like. And as far as not being a "Les Paul guy" is concerned, what sounds better for slide than P-90's?
Guitars. The older and skankier they look the better they are. Absolutely nailed it.
That is very true. Generally, the better playing ones get played more Than the badly playing ones. And because of that they wear and tear and get that beautiful worn patina.
Still amazed at the fact that you GOT THIS AT GOODWILL????🤯
5:20 - what it sounds like to hear 60+ years of being cooped up suddenly given a wide open space to breathe, stretch, and growl. What an amazing sound.
Anybody else out there saying to themselves, 'Damn, I need to get a guitar with P90s!' I know I did. :-)
Yup! And I did just that!
My God that thing sounds special. Maybe my favorite tone you’ve ever had on the channel right here.
Unpopular opinion: a mahogany slab-body with P90s is perhaps the greatest, most versitile tone machine of all time
Unpopular? Maybe... Factual? Hell yeah!
Juniors & Specials with P-90's have a singing quality that even Les Paul can't match... go watch Leslie West's performance from Woodstock!
@@timnewman1172 just went and watched it, that’s a sweet tone. Super smooth but with enough distortion to give some supreme feel and drive.
Umm, one of the greatest guitars I ever made is a junior clone with a smoking hot P90, and it will be with me until the day I no longer breathe.
Unpopular, maybe, but I’m with you 100%.
@@timnewman1172 I think the original LPs had P-90s, the Gold Tops, and their sound is amazing. The PAFs were developed to sound similar but eliminate the noise. Joe B says even though he plays mostly humbuckers live, he thinks the P-90s are better, and records a lot with them. Chris Buck has a vid where he plays an authentic LP Gold Top with P-90s. And, in the “My Love” vid, you’ll see Henry McCullough playing one for that amazing solo.
I’m with everyone else on the wait for this vid. So much soul in that old girl did not disappoint. Love the channel ❤️
This is my kinda guitar! I like anything with character/patina. Appreciate you leaving the originality! You can clearly hear the difference between this and a new guitar. Has a soul. I feel like I'm at Woodstock or some shit. Amazing pickup and great restoration!
Beautiful instrument man! You are truly blessed. God is good, all the time.
When you first played a hot lick, your face looked like when you had the chance to talk to your crush and she liked you back lol
😂😂
Just imagine what that guitar has been through in the last 60+ years. Good on you for bringing it back to life. The mojo on that thing is beyond measure.
Glorious sounds. It's not often a guitar gives me goosebumps, but this one does. It sings!
The nicest sounding Les Paul I’ve ever heard. It’s unreal... A insane job done
That’s the best sounding guitar I’ve ever heard. Shit makes me wanna cry it’s so perfect.
Would’ve waited a 1000 years to hear this thing back in action. What an amazing guitar. So much mojo. Thank you for bringing it back to life.
Never have I so enjoyed feeling envious before...
And right now all the people who laughed at you for buying it are crying into their glasses of very sour milk.
2:40
That's actually impressive. Whoever owned this thing must've played it A LOT and was probably legit.
It kills me that we will probably never know who originally owned this
I'm not much of a Les Paul (Gibson) guy either but DAMN! That guitar sounded so sweet especially with that AMP. I'm getting more and more jazzed by P90 pickups.
Seeing your facial expressions during this is amazing
That look of utter amazement you get when you realize you found a diamond in the rough!
@@timnewman1172 I think in this case it's the rough that makes it a diamond
I think he’s a les Paul guy after this 😄🎼
Something about hearing that guitar sing makes me tear up, man.
I'm crying
Same here Tony...
There’s a soul in that wood. A lot of music that’s been made with that instrument. It shows.
Yeah, Me Too!! Sounds GREAT!
It's Almost as old as Im
The Trogly's crossover here is incredible. So rad
Trogly's trash lol
Hateraide anyone???
I have lost all respect for trog.
@@rickallen6378 why what happened
Crazy how one of the most friendliest people on the internet can have people hate on him.... but remember if you don't have haters your not doing good enough yet...
My favorite thing about 2-pickup/4-knob Gibson guitars is keeping the neck pickup backed off to about “4” when you are running a fuzz face, axis fuzz, peach fuzz or similar pedal. That way with a flick of the pickup selector switch you have an instant sweet bluesy clean channel.
sounds incredible. cant wait till my guitar looks that well worn.
Wow..... that is the sound so many chase after. Definitely got some kind of mojo to it. Think it even caught you off guard. You chose the right amp to play it with too.
What a beautiful time capsule. I wouldn't be able to put it down. What you have done is shown that old Gibson the respect and dignity it deserves after decades of souls it has graced. It is just beautiful
Please NEVER sell that guitar! That thing sounds UNREAL!!!! Man, that thing was made to sing!!!!!!!!
That brought a tear to my eye.
For real.
So happy to see the old girl moving on in a new phase of life.
Sounds amazing!
So promissed a repair list but didn't? - OK - broken headstock - Repair mechine heads - You eluded to a posible Fret Replace but never followed through with the list?
Nice Axe - !
That guitar is loving that slide. I can here it singing “I have been forgotten for years, and now I can sing again!” That’s what I heard. Nice feel; loved that playing at the end.
I'm a strat guy, but boy this heavenly tone. Can't get any better than this
Sounds sweet. Tweed Bassman doesn’t hurt it at all. 😜
Is that what he's playing it through? Or it's just sitting back there?
Ok...just curious here...it sounds fantastic.....so how much $$ do have in it now???
I love your enthusiasm bro, your voice trembling ever so slightly when you saw those pots, the eyes flashing when you fired her up. She deserved a second life and you’ve worked a miracle for her. Epic, beautiful job, Bravo!
As John Cleese would say, "you lucky bastard".
Can’t remember when he famously said that. I know it was Michael Palin who did in “Life of Brian.”
@@qdHazen I was sort of paraphrasing my excitement for his guitar find. Sort of like saying when Capt. Kirk supposedly said, "beam me up Scotty" even though he never said it in that way. The phrase encapsulates our collective memory.
When I look at that guitar I think of the late great Johnny Thunders..how about a few bars of chinese rocks
been looking forward to this one, buckle up..
That makes me think of a VIBE That needs its own issue model that has GREENY vibes written all over it
I'm so glad to see you and Joel going through the effort to restore this beautiful guitar.
I have a friend, Vic DaPra, who is a renowned expert on Les Pauls. He would love to see what you have done to this guitar. I really think that you would love to talk to him.
A bit about Vic. He is the sweetest guy you could ever want to meet. He was the owner of the Guitar Gallery in Canonsburg, PA (where I live) until he retired a few years ago. He has a collection of very valuable Les Pauls and Gibson even made a Vic DaPra Carmel Burst Les Paul and I think a Vic DaPra Whiskey Burst Les Paul. He wrote I think 8 books on Les Pauls.
I really think that you'd make a great friend if you give him a call and tell him about your beautiful LP.
I closed my eyes, listened, and slowly smiled.
To listen at this is just comparable to drink a glass of aged wine... of 50 year aged wine.
That thing sounds so magnificent it brought tears to my eyes.
What a knarly instrument. It sounds like what it looks like. A stone cold badass
Unbelievable tone and mojo and that thing! Very resonant. I'm not a Les Paul guy either, a standard Les Paul anyway, a P90 slab is a different animal though. I could never get a Les Paul to sound right in my hands for some unknown reason.
I am so glad that the guitar will be last at least next 50years.
When you played this for the first time I literally said to my self holy shit
It’s not openly crying, it’s weeping. The last spirit to rise out of Pandora’s box...
was hope
Yeah, no reason is legit enough to ship a Gibson vintage guitar in a gigbag. Dude, buy a case.. the guitar deserves it
i always love what you play. idk if it’s original or someone else wrote it but nevertheless i love it especially on that beauty
"I'm not a Les Paul guy". Famous last words. In 12 months you'll have 3 more.
Sounds so great! The sustain is so incredible.
you can put it down and go make a sandwich, and when you come back, it'll still be ringing...
this guitar a blues soul
I am a jazz guy but that guitar has one of the most beautiful tones I've ever heard. Not sure if its a combination of amp, guitar, pedals if any and player but man that thing has tone for days.
After listening to many guitars of this type on RUclips, this is the very best I've ever heard. I think the year it was made has allot to do with it. Reminds me of the old Duane Allman guitars, sounds like a concert soprano talking.
This guitar found “YOU” for a reason, you serve it justice brother it sounds exquisite. God you are one lucky man. Rock on!
He was the highest bidder....... Lol
Someone once told me “ You can’t make a Diamond out of a Horseturd” .. well my friend YOU now own a DIAMOND!! That’s such an awesome save, rescue.. if you may, your friend is so skilled.. a real artisan!! Congrats Matt, many happy hours of playing!! 🎵🎵🎸🎵🎵
I love this approach to buying vintage guitars-reclaiming “garbage grade” axes and turning them into monster players with unique histories.
Just those few initial notes... wow! It really brings a tears to my eyes. It sounds amazing! I agree... you nailed it! A broken, worn out fretless girl totally reborn! I’d name her “Phoenix” Fantastic kudos your luthier and u Matt. Your playing is genuine, beautiful and inspiring. Thank you for what you do with these instruments.
To paraphrase: 'ooo, ooo that tone, can't ya hear that tone'...wow.
I can only describe how this sounds in one way, and purely, not immaturely. This sounds like sex... That sound... perfection!
that little smile at 4:33, thinking "yeah I think this one's gonna be good."
That guy Joel nailed it and yes it has "The Mojo" now restored in it . Keep it forever. Peace my man.
sounds ABSOLUTLY AMAZING man...love the sound. Make my eyes watered.
One of the best guitars i've heard in youtube so far, i have one from 1977 a great one also, mya i ask which wiring yours has and which capacitor ? i've heard the old ones used Bumblebee 0.022 and 50's wiring
You really are a great guitar player. Stratocasters, your style shows your true love. But, brother you make that lLes Paul sing! The way it plays. I know how it must feel. Growing up being a Les Paul player. It wasn't until later years I picked up a Stratocaster which is kind of now. And I'm finding the love for that. The way you are with that Paul. It went through so much I've watched and I'm so glad that you got it man you keep rocking that. Kick out the grooves
The pick guard and knobs drive me bonkers but I totally get keeping the history it had.
Me too!! Gots to go!
Kept waiting for you to bust into “Oh Well” with that Peter Green tone!!!!
I would love to know everything that you had done how much did it cost if you don’t mind and on your next video please don’t forget some really good zoomed in footage of the binding and what was done on the fretboard how how it was done 🎸
That sounded amazing. Especially that C chord around 6 minutes in... incredible!
Damn it looks amazing, especially the Headstock and I sounds just as good ✌️
your repair guy is good at what he does.
"Good things comes to those o wait." Yea I odered my new stratocaster yesterday IT WILL ARRIVE IN AGUST!!!
It sounds amazing! The friend who did the work for you is a craftsman! I can’t believe the rebuild on those pickups!
That guitar turns 100 years old before i could be able to afford it. Damn, i should stop watching Videos about vintage Guitars because it makes me sad to see something i will never be able to own, OR EVEN PLAY FOR 2 MINUTES, in my entire life.
You're very grateful? yes we've heard that couple of times mate!
BUT WE'RE GRATEFUL TOO :D ABSOLUTELY KILLER GUITAR AND RESTORATION!
This is wonderful. I had some P90s installed on one of my mid 2000s Ibanez Artcore guitars. Initially I wasn't a fan - for recording it was okay though I didn't like it much for live work. We did an alnico 2 mod and she's a keeper. I "get it" now - the thing can cover a ton of ground from "Charlie Christian" type sounds, bebop and post bop and modern jazz, though I actually wanted this to be my "ole timey'" axe for T-Bone Walker, Chet Atkins, and Brian Setzer sounds. Two magnets are better than one. :) Great demo of a sweet fiddle.
Like I said before, Joe Bonamassa will be contacting you, especially NOW that you've had all that work done. He MUST own every old Les Paul ever made, anything less is a crime against what ever mandate drives him to own them all.
Happy it all worked out, man!
You seem like a genuinely nice and kind hearted person. Stumbled across your videos randomly I don't even play guitar but I've enjoyed what I've watched so far 🤙
Thanks Kristian that's very meaningful to me.
You can hear how grateful that guitar is to have been repaired and played again. Every molecule and atom of that wood has been marinated in mojo
