I have adored this woman for decades. She just gets better and better. I love everything she does and everything she's on. I dont think she will ever understand the impact she's had on people with mental health or even that she has saved lives. I ADORE HER.
Me too. I remember seeing her first comedy central presents special when I was like 10 or 11 and it made me realize how much I love stand-up. She is an absolute genius and I'm so glad she shares so much about her mental health experiences because it will definitely help a lot of people to hear that they're not alone in their mental illness.
I actually told her as much online once and she replied with the longest and loveliest message of thanks and encouragement right in the middle of Covid. She’s so special.
So sad but true. While having more money to spend on mental health care is useful, it also doesn't necessarily mean that the care you get is better or more effective. It's often the things surrounding the care, ie: the luxuriousness of the facility, the food, activities available etc.
It's almost like it's a giant conspiracy to cover up for the methodical destruction of the western mind by its corrupted institutions with the side benefit of grifting some cash for its purveyors, with a small little sprinkle of actual usefulness and healing just to keep it juicy. Or something.
Absolutely. I remember one day during my mental health treatment thinking “Is this it? Is this all they have for me?” It was disheartening. Drugs and platitudes? 🤷🏼♂️
It's insanely true. I went to Silver Hill in New Canaan CT in 2010, it was $69,750 for a month and it was worthless. I went to 5 other places around the same price, same deal. I only started to get better off meds and with trauma therapy, specifically somatic-based trauma therapies. I also had undiagnosed autism and Lyme disease the whole time. I was misdiagnosed by every clinician I had for over 30 years
Maria makes me feel better about struggling with mental illness. She's a positive role model for being able to keep picking herself back up and achieve her goals.
@@Berighteousone everyone's med journey is different. I've heard her speak on this before and she said something to the affect of those side affects being more tolerable than the side effects of other meds she tried.
The fact that she fights stigma by joking about such taboo topics as _suicidal ideation & hospitalization_ gives my traumatized brain a tingly 🫧 feeling & giggles of catharsis 💕
She is so brilliant. I have loved Maria since I found her web series over a decade ago. And god I never realised how much I needed someone to publicly say how shitty mental health help tends to be. Thank you! It is so frustrating how often people recommend getting help as if that's just something that exists and is useful. It's very shitty help!
I adore Maria! She is hilarious and it’s so comforting to hear her talk about mental issues in such a relatable way. I can’t wait to read her book and see her perform this fall!
Glad to see Maria on my favorite podcasts. I’m a long time fan of all her work. I struggle with manic depression and she’s an inspiration to me. Grateful to her for being open and vulnerable and sharing her comedy and talent with the world!
Maria: I could listen to you all day. I've learned more about myself from you and your performances/interviews than I have from therapy, self help books, coursework.
very few comedians have the replay value that equals a musician. Maria's comedy is the kind of creativity that you want to listen to over and over again. She's a lot like a favorite movie, where every line is a fun catch phrase ...... Maria's replay value is amazing.
Yesss…I so agree. I never realized this, but it is so true! I am a big music nerd and so I know what you mean, and I cannot think of another comedian that I do that with (re-listen and re-listen), she is my fave and Rachel Feinstein is another fav.
