- Comedian, actress, and author Maria Bamford spoke at the International OCD Foundation's 28th Annual OCD Conference in San Francisco. Check out her hilarious keynote speech!
"Everyone's doing the best they can. Sometimes it's not that good." This fills me with immense relief.
nice reference!!!
She's not just one of my favorite comedians. She's one of my favorite people.
so. finding this video today may have just saved my life.
Still alive?
@@adamfrbs9259 alive and i know myself better than i have in years
Brilliant, hilarious- and so much heart. A dazzling keynote for this incredible conference. Maria Bamford is a national treasure.
Would that the nation knew of this treasure. 😃
She really is 💜
God I am so glad she's in the world and I got to find her.
Yesss!
"You look fine, which I guess at Kaiser Permanente is a diagnosis.". 😅
Did anyone else get emotional after the story about the Hertz rental car lady? “I believe every human life has value”. Hilarious, yes, but also very touching.
She is magnificent, fearless, heroic
My favorite comedian of all time! As someone who has struggled with OCD their whole life, her stories always make me feel not so alone and like someone understands what it's like in my head. They say that most brilliant people probably have some sort of disorder because they don't think like most people. Maria is proof of that. She may have her issues....but she is a total GENIUS in my opinion. ❤❤❤
It's extremely therapeutic to me to watch Maria Bamford talk about intrusive thoughts. I'll go the rest of the day without having any after listening to her talk about them.
I have suffered from intrusive thoughts, particularly in my mid 20s through 30s, and hearing about Maria's experience de-stigmatized it for me. I loved her for her comedy long before she came out with her mental health journey and became not only hilarious, but a caring wise woman in her times.
I love herrrrr
Maria Bamford’s stand-up changed my life in ways I can’t even begin to describe. I’m so glad to see that she finally got to a place where she feels comfortable and loved. she deserves it; we all deserve it.
Parts of this made me belly laugh: “Maria, it’s OK if you’re gay”.
Hahahaha!!! As a 42 year old, with 4 stints in rehab, 2 in inpatient mental health facilities, and years in and out of 12 step cults, I understand.
Maria is the best. She was the first person I heard talk about Unwanted Thought Syndrome, and it was eye opening. Thank you, Maria... :)
Maria has moved from gifted comedian to a gifted voice for good. She is becoming a national treasure.
This is so, so important. The intrusive thoughts she mentions are *specifically* brought on because they are the *worst* thing you can imagine, and the *last* thing you’d ever actually want to do. But your brain is disordered for X reason and just goes “But are you sure” over, and over, and over again
I wish you peace of mind.
@@holyworrier Thank you! Luckily (a relative term, of course), they happened only episodically in my life. I mean.. They could sometimes last years lol, but it's the internet resources and people like Maria who made me realise what I said in my comment above.
For me it's all anxiety-based and I've made peace with a good chunk already, and I hope that with my current therapy we can unpeal the rest of that onion. Have a nice day!
Maria is my favourite comedian of all time, she's just wonderful. She's also the most inspirational person I know with regard to dealing with mental health issues. God bless her, even if he is a silly goose.
Thank you Maria for being you and sharing a little of that with me.
Not only is she one of the most inventive, funniest performers ever, she's one of the rarest of breeds: a kind human being. More power to you lassie!!
I thought I was far enough into my recovery to not have any more “oh thank god that’s not just me” moments, but “maybe you’re just tricking everyone into thinking you’re a lesbian and actually you’re straight” really got me. 😂 It’s wild how as soon as you realize you’re actually gay and your OCD was onto something with that one, all the “oh no, what if I’m gay” thoughts just instantly, seamlessly transform into “oh no, what if I’m straight”.
Authenticity at its peak.. i adore this woman. Maria has been a reliable pillar of honest discourse, you KNOW you’re getting a piece of her soul when she speaks - it feels like a deep deep sharing of personal truth. Even down to the tone and cadence of her voice, it’s so expressive. So her. I love it
i love how she reminds me that I can have more issues than just bipolar disorder 😊❤🎉
So many more!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎊🎊🥳🥳🥳🥳💃🏻💃🏻🕺🏽🕺🏽🕺🏽😻😻😻
The fact that you need a disclaimer about "comedy" is both sad+hilarious. Great Job!
it's crazy how y'all still don't have free healthcare. I'm glad maria managed to make enough money to still be with us. love her stuff.
I've watched this video 100 times.
Nihilistic napping, just tap out 😅😬…She’s so brilliant and spot on and whew the truth hurts …and ofc she’s hilarious. F’ing gold ❤✨
That was PHENOMENAL!!! Rare, raw, and authentic.
Maria is a wonderfully funny and bright person. She is worthy of living any life she wants to. We all have some sort of issues. You go girl!
Hysterical laugh out loud funny shit right here! Maria, I donated $20 to the scholarship fund so someone can attend next year to this organization! You are the best! Keep coming back!
Thank you so much for your donation!
I'd call her speech an eleven outta ten. She handled it with aplomb.
Maria is def the best comedian
I don't have OCD but I love Maria Bamford and can relate to a lot of what she said.
Rookie mistake. Never tell the weekend psychiatrist anything except for unwanted side effects of medications 😂
I loved her in Portlandia and Lady Dynamite! As a Christian with OCD I didn't agree with everything she shared but can totally agree that there has been a LOT of hurt done by religious groups over the years that have no formal training in therapy. Especially traumatic for those with scrupulosity/religiosity OCD.
Love 'Lady Dynamite' Maria!
I just saw her in Portland recently and I think she mentioned that she was going to do this seminar, I’m glad I came across this recording of it!
America’s sweetheart!
Omg she makes me laugh so hard.
I started my Sunday morning by watching this, and it's honestly given me a great boost to tackle the day.
Not only an excellent comedian but someone who’s vulnerability and honesty commands respect.
Genius in the house.
The BAMF
Seeing the humor in stuff that is horrid when you're in the thick of it is really healing. And Maria Bamford is the absolute best person for it, she's hilarious and smart and incisive. I love you Maria!
God she’s brilliant.
from a licensed mental health professional, Maria-thank you! I really don't know how you could /would will/are going to digest my thanks...WTF, your crazy is just okay. A lot of folks have you beat. keep sharing. and stay upright.
A serious comedy crush for decades
She was great!! So 😂!
Props to whoever chose that background lighting/color. It's super calming and really compliments Maria!
I thought this was a legit academic event. Laugh. True. Solid fan forever, truly.
One of my favorite things of her I’ve seen
Amen.
This was the best, most inspiring speech I've ever heard about ocd.
We are glad you enjoyed it!
The bit about questioning your sexuality cracked me up. As a bi woman married to a man, the struggle is real.
She is awesome!!❤
As long as I clench my fists in random intervals while watching this I wont feel compelled watch it again and again...
My favorite!!
You know , I can relate😮
Maria is the only one who can make me laugh and cry simultaneously.
She is so fucking funny. What a brilliant woman.
I love you Maria! Keep on keeping it real!!!! 🙏

Same👏👏👏😎
Bravo Maria, thank you!
Fantastic speech
The best!
Keynote GOAT!
We are unworthy of this remarkable woman.
Maria Bamford should do the keynote speech for ALL conferences! If you love this speech, you should check out her book: "Sure, I'll Join Your Cult: A Memoir of Mental Illness and the Quest to Belong Anywhere." Her memoir really is both funny and insightful for anyone wanting to get mental health help via therapy and support groups.
Maybe you have to be this different to be this wonderful.
i love her so much! the anti-abortion clinic joke is hilarious!!!
my actual hero is maria
Maria you are the best❤😂🎉
Maria really is a gift. ❤
We agree!

I just adore her. The funniest woman in the world.
God I love her.
one if not the only human who just so happens to be a comedian with ocd and bipolarism that can comically articulate the deep partitioning of her mind.
She's so freaking funny!! Maria Bamford thank you for sharing your experience!!
Maria is an out-and-out genius.
This is brilliant. Speech writing on the no fear but fear itself,I have a dream level. Im not kidding. Absolute bravery facing a room of potentially uninterested people. Sublime
Love this.
That was so good
Lady Dynamite does again!
Luv ya Maria...
