I adore Maria Bamford. Everything a person might whisper about her behind her back (that, if not true, undoubtedly has an element of truth) only makes me love her more. The fact that she and others (such as Christopher Titus) are so honest about their mental health gives me hope in an ever darkening world. If we all wore our hearts on our sleeves to the same extent maybe we'd all be a little better off. Note: I admit the 'cringy' bits and her falling back on old material. I don't care and am amazed she can do what she does understanding a bit more about anxiety than most (not saying I'm clever, only that few people seem to care).
Staggering how lukewarm the sense of humor of that audience was. But I love the Tim Russert-looking-guy sitting to her left! She is so brave, so brilliant, so wonderful, and what she did at the end brought tears to my eyes. Just wonderful.
Beautiful way to stick it to the system, unique, but it still counts. Maria, your husband is a lucky man, crazy and all, but I bet it’s never a dull moment, keep rocking.
She’s up there crushing it and... the best parts were just flying over their heads . Love her so much . I’d admit to her being one of my all time hero’s , but ... that never ends well . I point and yell “ wow ! That’s it ! Finally someone with that multi balancing , highly critical , plate spinning , food goes in food goes out , playful spirit ! Yay ! “ Then the next day I’m reading horrible headlines . It’s like having the “ appreciation kiss of death “. So Maria, you’re unfunny . Your success was a fluke . You don’t know shit . And you’re just simply a lucky crazy bag lady . That should keep her alive for years to come.
This was a great commencement about knowing your value in the market and mistakes will be made, but stay strong and you will make it. Wish I could net 5000 being a comedian at a commencement
I am late to comment on this...but can't resist commenting. So sad this audience doesn't get humor. Those meatbags in the background should be tangled in their robes rolling on the ground laughing! Friggin' hilarious!!!!
So..... the audience didn't laugh. Well, they're young and there's a chance they have never heard of her and not used to her "style" - or to her. Or her work is more appreciated by seasoned humans. Or, they weren't sure to laugh - that robe is constricting. It's a commencement speech so when have we really paid attention... As for the those sitting behind her - the juxtaposition, Maria wouldn't have had it any other way. And of course, those who selected (hired) her to speak, they did their research. I wonder if there were back and forth arguments - to be a fly on the wall of those selection committee meetings... And perhaps, someone on the board wanted to play a trick on the board and kept Maria a secret or showed them only some "normal comedy bits of hers" (didn't know she had any of those) and played up the homegrown girl aspect. Who knows. What I do know is that maybe not now but later - they are all glad or at least better, for having her, and having her be her.
Absolutely love Maria Bamford's material, but this was kind of cringey to watch. What works well on late night shows and stand up stages doesn't necessarily translate too well to a commencement speech. Definitely a lot of good points made, but the dark awkwardness of her comedy just seemed out of place and overly uncomfortable on this particular stage.
I think that since the audience isn't mic'd, it seems more awkward than it is because their laughter is only barely being picked up by the stage microphone.
She just makes me feel something that no other person makes me feel. It's hard to describe but it's good.
That surprise ending... really choked me up. She's so great.
How can one person be so brilliant? And ballsy.
Maria Bamford is so inspiring to see her give back to her community so directly. She's a role model to us all, bless her
First Maria was one of my favorite comedians, now she' s one if my heroes.
That audience didn't get her. She is amazing. Hilarious and always with a deep twist. Live, even if only for spite!
What a beautiful speech and a beautiful act of selflessness. Maria Bamford is the best.
It wasnt supposed to be a comedy routine. There was comedy in it but she was trying to say something of real depth. To not be afraid of failure.

What an incredibly nice thing to do. And, more importantly, how incredibly brave of her to get up there and speak in spite of her admitted problems.
11:00 Oh my lord that was such a sweet gesture. Love Maria Bamford.

Team Bam Bam all the way!
That was one hell of a punchline. I love you, Maria!
Staggering how lukewarm the sense of humor of that audience was. But I love the Tim Russert-looking-guy sitting to her left!
She is so brave, so brilliant, so wonderful, and what she did at the end brought tears to my eyes. Just wonderful.
Excellent....that is very likely a commencement speech that many graduates will actually remember large parts of over the span of their lives..
How is the audience not howling? America’s sweetheart is talking and saying funny things-GET IT TOGETHER.
the further you go in higher education the lower everyone's sense of humor gets - seriously.
Education versus indoctrination... Real-life experience vs. computer programming. Programs don't possess humor.
They don't have a crowd mic, so you're only hearing what's going in through her mic
Tough Crowd with Maria Bamford!
Wow, i am jealous. One of the top 10 comedians of the world giving this speech... Very nice, will always love Maria, she simply is an awesome human.
I love this! I wish I could see the faces of the members of the board of trustees!
This is, unsurprisingly, perfect.
Maria Bamford is my comedy hero, even more so after this!
Maria...so brave, with so much integrity!! A wonderful and inspiring human that I adore.
Underrated speech!
Oh my God. So powerful, so beautiful. I needed to hear every word. Maria is amazing
I love this woman. She is so open.
What a wonderful person. Love you Maria!
God bless Maria! God has blessed Maria.
I love the awkward expression on the gentlemen to the right of the podium
OMG! Funny and selfless! She's so amazing.
Loved that she quoted the film Razors Edge
The ending makes this awesome. She's nuts, but she's not crazy.
Oh my gosh! If I didn't love Maria enough already!
Wow. How crazy would it be to have Maria Bamford as your university commencement speaker??
Absolute hero.
Anyone else see that guy check his watch & cringe through most of Maria’s speech?
❤️ her so much.
Beautiful way to stick it to the system, unique, but it still counts. Maria, your husband is a lucky man, crazy and all, but I bet it’s never a dull moment, keep rocking.

Absolutely love her!
Great comedian. Wonderful person.
A courageous and brilliant woman.

"Hello, I'm Peter Graves, and I'm here to enroll at the University of Minnesota."
She's the best.
the D.A. way. love it! what a boss!
Her calling the “non profit” education system - such a racket - literally an absolute racket
Why on earth did Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle fire Maria?!?! They should be so lucky.
love her
That’s awesome!
not a commencement, rather a confession speech
This was a great commencement about knowing your value in the market and mistakes will be made, but stay strong and you will make it. Wish I could net 5000 being a comedian at a commencement
Hahaha no kidding. Isn't she gold!?
I lover her!
I love her
Love her
Love her!
Maria's husband is one lucky bastard!
Holy shit it’s real

Never say no without a number...hm...interesting idea.
so they did cough up the 20 g's?
Wow!!!!

Nervous guy in the dais front row is nervous.

A very sweet thing to do. The rest was painful to listen to and not sure anyone can relate. Always a fan.

The audience laughed. No mics. Use your brain.

Late fall
Classy
She got 10 grand for this speech and gave half away.
Remember that she only took home $5,000 of that 10,000. So she actually gave away all that she made.
This fucking bitch I love her

it was out of place - but appropriate nonetheless. screw 'em. it was stuff that needed to be said.
I think that since the audience isn't mic'd, it seems more awkward than it is because their laughter is only barely being picked up by the stage microphone.
Couldn’t love her more if I tried.
Wow, this was a little painful.....I'm wondering if the UoM feels they got what they paid for...
All these schools deserve to be shamed for such a racket and how much they exploit students
So cringe. Love her, but this was so painful.
