He's super out of it now. Dude still goes on Rogan, so no sense of responsibility. He's been a bubble for so long he has idea what's going on in the world.... because he won't shut up.
Neil laughing at the moon is made of cheese joke has to be one of my favorite, most heartwarming milestones of this podcast's history. Just a perfectly tailored moment.
I just got done listening and I love this episode so much. Why has it taken so long to get him with Pete? Some would say the wait has been all worth it.
“University teaches you how to learn” Love it. I studied music, surrounded by better musicians. But what I learned was “how to practice” AND with enough “good” practice you can learn to do some thing you thought impossible for you You’re not “dumb” you just haven’t had enough practice enough for YOU to do something. Some people need more (me), some need less, some can make the connections in time, some have enough interest to practice more. “Talent” is a partial illusion resulting from this unpredictable combination of “interest” and “practice”
Couldn't agree more. I'd also say that "talent" seems to me, more often than not, is just an alignment of the way someone is most efficient at learning things, in combination with the type of skill being learned. Meaning, I was a very visual learner growing up, I struggled with math unless it had a visual component. I think the more "talented" mathematicians probably had a less visual based way of learning. I however excelled in the Arts and was often told how "Talented" I was, and often heard fellow classmates say stuff like "I could never draw that" "I don't have the skill to paint that". And I always remember being confused by this because I had a clear lineage of shitty work, to slightly less shitty work, to slightly better work, etc. etc. And it can become almost offensive, when someone passes off your time and dedication to a craft as just being something you're born with.
I wanted my life to end several times reading this until I had the realization that "life" doesn't really mean anything and doesn't have any real "purpose" and if that is true then "killing yourself" isn't really even "killing yourself" so I'm still here
This man has spent his life trying and succeeding in bringing science into the homes of the world. I love his passion and can't stand people that write him off because hes passionate about finishing his thoughts on podcasts. Dude is legendary
Tragically, during an era when half of the population seems to have decided that "science is dumb". Social media's just slaughtering the brain cells of civilization. Thankfully, there are bright spots like this series.
Wow, I just can't stop thinking about this discussion. 45 minutes in.. I had to get ready to start cleaning the pieces of my brain that was blown all over the inside of my vehicle. What a dynamic flip also from the perspective of a long time diehard, you made it weird fan, to hear Pete Holmes graciously allow the guest to just wonderfully ramble uninterrupted. Thank you, Pete Holmes and thank you and NDT.
Neil said that when your brain shuts down, you become a vegetable. However, we have already established that vegetables don’t have a need for a brain. That’s not what they are. They are…our version of the dying tree. The tree dying faster than the trees around it, for no apparent reason. Just a thought 😊. Love the show!
How were eggs not included in his whole "milk and honey" theory? Nothing has to die to get a chicken egg... truly in this case because taking milk from a cow is taking milk away from a baby cow and likely a lot of dead baby cows in the dairy industrial complex. I am a little disappointed that Pete didn't provide better defense for veganism. Animal exploitation and suffering are a large, if not the largest part of veganism. Neil clearly just seems defensive about the food he eats. Why can't some people admit the climate science, the animal suffering, the exploitation and just say "I just still want to eat meat because it tastes good and makes me feel good and I don't want to go through the trouble of changing" why not? When "intelligent" people can't absorb all the facts and admit those things I have a difficult time trusting any other conclusion they may reach. That was just a really bad start for the whole conversation - I didn't trust Pete to challenge him at the end when it got to spirituality questions when he totally caved on the vegan comments.
The life inside the egg dies. He was making more of a philosophical point about life & death with food than a specific point about our food industry. Unfortunately, the questions that should have been brought up with regards to dietary ethics with regards to our current food industry were not (i.e. torture, climate change, pandemic risk, etc.). But it was still an interesting conversation to have.
@@joeb588 The chicken eggs we eat are unfertilized, so I guess you could say "potential life" but for the point Neil was making I think it fits the criteria. But I understand he was just pointing to one aspect of the debate but my point seems consistent with Neil's comments on being vegan/vegetarian - he seems pretty dismissive. I know Pete isn't as vegan as he once was, at least he doesn't talk about it much, but it just seemed strange for him to gloss over the comments is all.
Not to mention the massive environmental degradation from animal agriculture, a bigger driver of climate change than transportation. Surely Neal must care about that, if the suffering of the animals is off his radar... I honestly don't get it, he's supposed to be a thoughtful human
I don’t like plants they are disgusting and I’m not gonna change. I will ALWAYS eat meat. It’s terrible what happens to many of those animals, but it is what it is. I’m a meat eater. Veganism is terrible for animal life, they KILL everything living besides the plants while farming those plants. EVERYTHING dies! Plus plants are alive too, and new studies show that they may in fact be sentient. They can see and perceive what color your shirt is. They can hear, and feel. So no matter what we have to “kill” to survive. I wish I could single handedly give these animals a good life until they meet their maker and become food.
During much of the conversation I was reminded of Albert Schweitzer's Reverence for Life: "Reverence for Life says that the only thing we are really sure of is that we live and want to go on living. This is something that we share with everything else that lives, from elephants to blades of grass-and, of course, every human being. So we are brothers and sisters to all living things, and owe to all of them the same care and respect, that we wish for ourselves." It's something I've tried to live by ever since hearing on... The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, season 1, episode 6, "Congo, January, 1917", starring Sean Patrick Flanery, air date April 8 1992. I'd give it a 92% out of 100.
being that it was right near the end, I started scrolling for somebody who might've pointed that out because I didn't wanna be that guy and it's not that wild a substitution
I’m plant based because I couldn’t raise and kill an animal. I can stomach raising and killing plants. It’s not that deep. Has Neal killed a cow or just watched it on TV?
OMG this was fantastic and delightful, I can't even...they conversed so well together (entertaining & educational, nutritious & delicious). Worth watching right through to the end, incl. how he customized ;) the pod's catchphrase.
His point seems to boil down to "mmmm bacon" and nothing even vaguely more nuanced than that. On this topic, he is not worthy to tie Pete Singer's shoes...
Came here to say this. It's about suffering and killing LESS. Yeah vegetarians still live in houses. Wow. Mind blown. But so do meat eaters. Vegetarians are still killing and torturing less sentient beings. That's the point.
Okay, I can't get through this. But, I'm curious about the milk and honey thing - apparently NDT has said that milk and honey are the most ethical foods to eat because no living thing has to die for them? But, anyone who knows anything about the dairy industry would know that's demonstrably false?! Love you, Pete. Glad you seemed to enjoy this. I might just watch the (amazing) Rory Scovel episode again.
He wasn’t saying that no living things die for them, he was saying they’re the only foods that don’t require death. So it was more of a philosophical point about life & death with food than a point about our food industry.
This seriously irritated the hell out of me. Maybe 1% of people have had dairy that wasn't directly linked to the death of the offspring and the milked cow. Saying milk does not involve killing is philosophically feasible, but has nothing to do at all with the reality of dairy production in the US or Europe...

NDT has an enormous self-righteous ego and wants to shove his arrogant opinions down others. I eat meat but his whole narrative on why it's better to eat animals sounds made up to justify his own diet and cognitive dissonance. Eating plants is not the same as animals, it's about minimizing suffering because we can empathize with animals, plants are alive but less sentient than living beings. Just because the ecological footprint of a human is large, doesn't mean we should eat a bucket of chicken a day and maximize suffering onto other beings.
I would love to see Tyson on an apologetics podcast. The claim that he's evidence driven and then goes on with multiple faith statements about science is hilarious
lol it doesn’t have suction. It’s not a vacuum cleaner just sucking up everything. Space is just almost empty of matter. Barely any molecules, and pressure is so low it’s almost nonexistent.
Pete, are Dean's parents aware you've been discussing their child on the internet with Neil DeGrasse Tyson? As a parent, this is something I'd like to know.
the people that retain the most information have an argument with the king of the world that theyre gonna win if they can just get in the room with him
The mouse analogy is flaud :) You can say that about humans too right? Anyway, with the mouse it is all about coexistance. I have TRIED to live with the mice, but they shit in all the wrong places, they gnaw on the wrong things and eat your food. I love rodants and respect them as intelligent beings, but it is almost never sustainable to try to live with them (at least the wild varieties :) ). So. Either they´ll have to make it in the wild, or the cat eat them. Life is hard.
I remember the bit about: "Nothing created the universe." I think the problem with the bit, is this is an ambiguous statement, and Pete addresses the strawman version of this ambiguous statement, rather than the actual version. When you say "nothing created the universe" what people mean is just that the universe was NOT created. Therefore there is "nothing" that created our universe, because our universe just *is* what it is, and has always existed. To reiterate this ambiguity. Within christian lore... if you asked Jesus who his (human) dad is, he would say "No-one is my dad." He is NOT saying there is a human dad out there called "No-one" who fathered him. What he is saying is that he does NOT have a dad. Likewise NOTHING created our universe... because our universe wasn't "created." "Nothing fathered our universe" means that our universe does not have a father. It does not mean our universe's father is called "nothing." Now, all of this is just an assertion, and you'd need evidence for a claim like this. However, I think the key takeaway, that unless there is evidence given for there being some "creator" of our universe, we should not assume the universe was created. A lot of religious folks may talk about the big bang as some evidence of a "creation" but that violates the 1st law and I think this betrays a lack of understanding of what the big bang actually is. It is simply the point of highest density and lowest entropy that our universe can be in and the entirety of time is the transformational process from that big bang, to the big freeze. The big freeze that awaits at the end of our universe (lowest density and highest entropy) will not "destroy" our universe, anymore than the big bang "created" it. There is no reason to think there is a time "before" the big bang, any more than there is a reason to think there is a location "north" of the north pole. Time is a dimension within the universe, so there can't be a time beyond it. There is no time in which the universe did not exist... because time is a product OF the universe... tldr: You can reword this more simply as... the universe has always existed. (edit) I hope my comments don't come across as disparaging of Pete's comedy, the delivery was great and Pete's a comedy genius, I just thought they raised some important questions, and I had some thoughts on them.
Great conversation and good interaction with feedback on each topics, being A Fan of NDT on his Astrophysics knowledge, he let down Evolutionary biology by saying chromosomes don't matter on your objective reality of being a Man or Women because society wants us to be this or that. Feelings don't matter in science facts do, Richard Dawkins confirms 2 sexes and feeling this or that can be subjective but you cannot change your objective reality.
Instead of "Getting Rid of the molecules to create a vacuum", focus on the space between the molecules. What makes that geometric shape unique? Does it relate to electricity at all?
I hope Pete can find this. Here's my story its long but it worth reading Science can never explain why I experienced the presence of a ghost/entity/alien/higher dimention interaction I'm a sane person with pretty good scientific background and an unending itch to know more about universe math and physics I experienced the presence of a ghost I was not on drugs or meds, and had no childhood trauma, no mental sickness, I was not drunk, I was fully aware and awake 100% and I was with a friend and everything that I was seeing he was seeing too The ghost was moving the ceiling lamp and there was no earth quake or wind and windows were closed and well shut, switching on the lamp, and the switch was on our line of sight and that room had only and only one switch, making noise by hiting the walls, throwing an object in a room were there was no wind, the object was thrown like someone had kicked it, there was no way that object could travel that far without receiving a good amount of force It was a fabric Dice bigger than a standard rubics cube it was on a shelf 15 20 inches from the ground and it was kicked 5 feet in front of me in a room with only two people and it was not my friend it didn't fall it was kicked, That night I learned those entities can only hit or kick with relatively small force they can't hold anything They also might get more physical power where you are aware of them or scared of them We both saw it years ago and this happened many times not once or twice Just like movies There is an afterlife or some sort of higher dimentions, Its not my belief its my direct observation and direct experience, I dont need to prove singularity at the center of a blackhole when I've been there... Hope Pete reads this and never stop searching because nothing makes Fing sense
Everyone picks on Neil for interrupting, but its often warranted to stay on track for a point he's making and needing to flesh out with precision.
True. Comedians love tangents and scientists love staying focused. Totally conflicting styles
Yes, of all the interviews I've heard of his, Pete does such a good job of using his speaking style as an advantage. This was such a delight.

I second this 💯🤙🏻
Who else was expecting to see what Neil DeGrasse Tyson looked like on the couch? 😂
Pete subtlely turning on the V-Neck filter at 16:33 🤣I was like...damn...his chest is super smooth.
😂 holy sht! I had to go back and see it lol
I was like “did he change his fcking shirt when he cut to Tyson??? 🤣 WOW lol
This was an unexpected delight.
Pete’s Ray Romano impression is an easy 10/10. 💯

'Europa Olestra fish swimming out of an anus'. This is the best interview ever.
LMAO my thought exactly.
I love it when a host just lets Tyson do him. Tyson is at heart an entertainer but his brain is too smart for that.
Amazing episode!! Thank you for this. Truly an experience watching you two go back and forth 😊
These two together: pure joy
Watching two experts in their fields shoot the breeze and make pretty damn good and humbling comparison is amazing 🍻
One of the best Keep it Crispy’s to date
Yay! Two of my favourite people! Neil Degrasse Tyson is also ok.
Best episode ever.
You 2 guys could have a show together good chemistry 😂 awesome Ep Pete! 👌🏿 👏🏿
I keep coming back to this. You both are so wonderful. Stay crispy 💙
Neil's new book is a must..!! Soooo good..!!
I remember ALL those "last time" moments with my kids. It breaks my heart completely.

How does Neil not realize that vegetarianism is about suffering? I love him but it's like he's being utterly willfully ignorant on that point
@lopez It seemed more to me like he was saying it's absurd to not eat meat because you're killing a plant when you eat it

In general you can tell the difference between a boy and girl by physical attributes.
Looking at the comments. I don't think NDT is an egomaniac or rude. I think he's just a genius.
Excellent Pete. Amazing. ❤
this was great stuff thanks
Neil on Theo Von's pc, was EPIC af...so this should be BRILLIANT..!!
I believe Neil had such a HOOT on there, cause he appreciated the brutal honesty...and Pete here, is the gawd of wit...so forgeddaboutit..!!
xD
Clicked so fast when I saw the guest name!
Great show, thanks
1:54:00 but how do we know that what we don’t know is 96% of everything? If we don’t know what it is can we be sure of how much of it is there?
one time I took enough shrooms to realize that im gonna become a tree when I die
pete youre the best - i love your vibe!
Side with the Trees!
Rarely do I watch a podcast, that by the end do I feel like I stuffed myself at Thanksgiving dinner, and bask in the satisfaction.
Great show in Houston Pete!
Pete?! You need to learn about Father Guido Sarducci!
A regular on SNL in the first few seasons
Is this the guy who fired all the X-Men??
I love dude fr amazing guest

Note to self: NEVER say anything about "god" to NDT! I'd never seen the dude so frustrated/upset before.
Yeah, he spent the last 20 minute’s aggressively missing the point Pete was making.
I would love to see Tyson on an apologetics podcast. The claim that he's evidence driven and then goes on with multiple faith statements about science is hilarious
my mantra is now the word ecological
“Physicists are inherently humble”. Call NDT what you will, but the man is definitely self-aware. :)
If life made any sense, this episode would have gotten 1 billion views.
Pete Holmes is averaging about 25 "mmm's" per minute
I gotta meet this Dean kid!
50:58. My 1st grade class took a field trip to a slaughter house.
Phenomenal, Pete.
You should get Stephen C Meyer on the show.
Or at least read his books. They're right up your alley.

I pick up my kids every chance I get...
2-3 at a time... I'm terrified of my last time...
CIA has something to say about the quiet lineages

Pop is the ham and cheese sandwich of the music world.

So great - could be a series. RUclips ads every 2 minutes are driving me insane however
Great conversation and good interaction with feedback on each topics, being A Fan of NDT on his Astrophysics knowledge, he let down Evolutionary biology by saying chromosomes don't matter on your objective reality of being a Man or Women because society wants us to be this or that. Feelings don't matter in science facts do, Richard Dawkins confirms 2 sexes and feeling this or that can be subjective but you cannot change your objective reality.
Skete Bones
if the universe is a simulation go buy a simulated joint and listen to simulated Allen Toussaint
Harvey Dent, can we trust him?
Instead of "Getting Rid of the molecules to create a vacuum", focus on the space between the molecules. What makes that geometric shape unique? Does it relate to electricity at all?
I hope Pete can find this.
Here's my story its long but it worth reading
Science can never explain why I experienced the presence of a ghost/entity/alien/higher dimention interaction
I'm a sane person with pretty good scientific background and an unending itch to know more about universe math and physics
I experienced the presence of a ghost
I was not on drugs or meds, and had no childhood trauma, no mental sickness, I was not drunk, I was fully aware and awake 100% and I was with a friend and everything that I was seeing he was seeing too
The ghost was moving the ceiling lamp and there was no earth quake or wind and windows were closed and well shut, switching on the lamp, and the switch was on our line of sight and that room had only and only one switch, making noise by hiting the walls, throwing an object in a room were there was no wind, the object was thrown like someone had kicked it, there was no way that object could travel that far without receiving a good amount of force
It was a fabric Dice bigger than a standard rubics cube it was on a shelf 15 20 inches from the ground and it was kicked 5 feet in front of me in a room with only two people and it was not my friend
it didn't fall it was kicked,
That night I learned those entities can only hit or kick with relatively small force they can't hold anything
They also might get more physical power where you are aware of them or scared of them
We both saw it years ago and this happened many times not once or twice
Just like movies
There is an afterlife or some sort of higher dimentions, Its not my belief its my direct observation and direct experience, I dont need to prove singularity at the center of a blackhole when I've been there...
Hope Pete reads this and never stop searching because nothing makes Fing sense
Neil is slumming it with Pete. 🤣😁
Neil?!?!???
The whole honey and milk thing blew my fucking mind
