Maria was one of the first comedians I watched as a kid. Her 30 min Comedy Central Presents standup was hysterical, even to a 13 year old boy. One of the all-time best CC specials.
I can’t believe anyone would heckle her. It would be funny if she just asked the guy who yelled out an old timey slur who brought him here from his assisted living facility, but then I’d feel like I’m insulting all the other old people there who aren’t bad.
I agree, I absolutely love her but oddly Americans don't agree and I can only assume because she's been so inconsistent and not in our faces enough over the last 15 years 🤷 what ever it is they're wrong she's flippin hilarious
Literally gasped when I saw this pop up in my feed. Got to see her perform for the first time last month after being a fan for years. Could not love her more❤❤❤
Neal + Maria = Joy This episode is an instant classic because it's authentic as hell. Very into Maria's vibe on and off stage and feel so much respect for Neal to make a point to highlight her and the many others who have added a great deal of value to humanity. Incredible episode and "flawless" interview, as usual. I really look forward to these and hope they get the credit they deserve for what they are which is Fantastic.
Just now realizing I’ve been a Maria Bamford fan for nearly 20 years. The Comedians of Comedy shaped my personality and sense of humor more than I could know. Keeping up with Patton, Zach, and Brian as a guy would be impressive. Giving them a run for their money as a woman is just incredible.
Same here! I adored Maria hanging out with the guys on that show, and I've loved her comedy since 2001. I got to meet her last July, and she was incredibly nice in person. Make sure to pre-order her book-I got one for myself and my sister who is also a huge fan! ❤
Maria continues to give us key mental health information that has genuinely lessened my anxieties and given me more motivation ever since I heard it, we live
I love the understated way that Neal cracks up. Like, his response to Maria's "I always did it through the butt," was the equivalent of someone else having an aneurysm from laughter. @22:00
Maria is an absolute gem. Honest and super smart humor. She never dumbs it down. The only way this interview could have been better is if she'd been allowed to finish one sentence. My birthday is coming up and I'm going to wish Neal comes to learn that he doesn't need to always be as important as his guests. Defer, dude. Lennon imagined there's no Heaven. Neal: How about imagining a sentence without "I". Big love to you both.
I'm glad you brought that up, and you did it in a very kind way. I wouldn't have been quite as gracious. It felt like he was asking her how she felt and thought, and then he'd TELL HER the answer...like....
Wow, I just saw Neal Brennan in Minneapolis and thought if I ever get the chance to talk to him, I would ask him to have Maria Bamford (a Minnesota homegirl) on Blocks. This is awesome!
Neal has just been bangin' out legend after legend after legend every week. He must be one of the nicest dudes in the game if this many people that don't need to do his podcast are willing to do his podcast. I'm blown away every week! Haven't missed an episode since it started.
Bravo. One step closer to all of us talking about mental health with compassion AND humor. More please. Thank you both for your vulnerability and modelling healthy laughter at the darkness of feeling like our personal suffering is uniquely horrible.
I discovered Maria via Dr Katz. I am only 27 and I am glad I still get to see real talents like Maria on platforms like this she is so funny and talented.
I was just thinking how BB almost owes his career to Maria Bamford for pioneering talking about mental health so vulnerably on stage and so successfully
Maria was the first stand-up that I ever became a fan of and it's been lifelong. Now I have so many comedians that I love but she'll always have a special place to me.
Huge fan, Maria has been hilarious since I can remember, and while I knew she talked about mental health I had somehow forgotten about that. I guess my own memory is getting suspect these days but this was interesting to hear the struggles and successes famous people go through, I had no idea really and I know this will help others to hear it. A personal friend that I hold in high esteem met Maria while making his way out west in Cali and he always spoke fondly of her.
I'm literally at work about to have a panic attack listening to this, and you both are making me feel seen. My coworkers don't seem to understand, or care to understand, and I'm just so grateful that I'm not the only one who feels this way sometimes. Thank you Neal. And Maria. This podcast has helped me with every single episode.
I’ve been fortunate to see both of them in small clubs in LA. They are equally smart and honest and I appreciate the help and light they shed on difficult topics.
This is the best episode so far, I am incredibly biased. Maria Bamford, Trailblazing comedian! Wowowowow… Neal’s winning with guests and covert music references in back to back episodes. Saying Yes… to this podcast! 🎉 I’m still floored.
OCD? I had one therapist tell me not to tell another I "ruminated" a lot. Another didn't want to talk about my sexuality. Another suggested I quit wearing jewelry and start playing golf with policemen. I quit at 11. I am too poor to even start again anyway. You are what I needed in 1996. Too late baby now it's too late though we really did try to jump off. Something back home (dog) kept me from certain exit visa stampage. Now, i am beating the odds every day i stay alive.
I love Maria Bamford, I've seen her a few times when she's in my town and will probably see her every time she's here. Neil Brennan sir, you are a well-honed very funny comic, but my apologies, I'm struggling to not say that it was a bit frustrating with what seemed to me the unnecessary amount of times Maria was interrupted. Maybe it was me. Anyway, thanks for a fun, insightful visit with one of my all-time favorites.
Gee, I would have loved to hear her responses. Another interview where the interviewer seems to ask questions so he can give his own answers She’s so great
Love this lady so much. My bf is mostly annoyed by all the comedy I force him to watch but her special had us both laughing so hard I think we got an ab workout.
As someone on the spectrum with past anorexia and exercise addiction, I love this episode. The show Physical is pretty good as far as depicting what it’s like to have an eating disorder. People are so afraid of representing it. I thought it wasn’t even allowed. Like people just ignore anorexics now, so it’s good to talk about it. Now, I love running but don’t workout 3 hours every day . The inner voice is very critical, but as someone with autism, I get a lot of outer voices on top of that saying negative things to me. Give people the benefit of the doubt and treat them with respect and kindness. Sometimes, I got more kindness from strangers than family.
Sorry to read that you’ve not always gotten the best support from some family members. I hope you feel you got it from other kind ppl instead when you’ve needed it the most. You mentioned a show called Physical, if you don’t mind, is it old, still available to watch from some streamimg platform?
Did not know that much about her from all the way here in Sweden. But now I will certainly look up more of her work. She seems like someone I would love to have as a friend. And her talk about mental health issues are so relaxed. Appreciate it.
Can I just say Better Help have NEVER spent their money better. Your guys dance on the blades of sanity like brittle, twirling dervishes. Elite chat work by two hilarious and emotionally intelligent lovelies. Thank you. The only problem with your pod is that it wakes me up! 👏💐👏💐
So amazing that this icon doesn’t see herself as we see her… Maria-We are so blessed to have you in the world. You’re comedy has saved so many… Thank you Neal, as always, you bring out the funny in the real and totally effed up world we are all experiencing. One of the best if so many bangers!
Neal connects with people so well. When he comes in contact with someone like Maria, there are so many words that don't have to be spoken. I feel an undercurrent through this episode of deep understanding. Something only people who have experienced what they're talking about can relate to.
So happy to see Maria on the pod circuit. She is so naturally engaging and honest. Hope she tries a few other pods in her comfort zone because she is hilarious.
She was a regular on Bonanas for Bonanza for a few years but recently stepped away. I think because of her book and other areas of her career ramping up. She’s fantastic on it if you’re looking for more of her on podcasts
I just saw her on Lovett or leave it and wondered if NB would have her on and I got my wish.🎉This made me Pre-order 'Sure, I'll join your Cult', as well as further confirmed Blocks as my favorite pod! Thanks NB and crew!
32:58 I was half-expecting the words "lesbian serial killer" to scroll up behind Maria. This is my first time seeing the podcast, so I'm not sure how it works yet. Maria is a joy to listen to and one of my favorites comics. I only know Neal through his _3 Mics_ special, but it was really good.
I saw Maria in a Comedy Central special in the early 2000s and thought she was so funny. Sounds like she has made huge achievements in her mental health and career sense then. So glad to see she’s got good things going in her life.

Me too. Same experience
Haha same here
Same
Wait, it was 2001? I guess I was 15, but yeah, ditto.
@@themurph930 yeah the 2001 special
Maria makes you laugh, gives you insight on an angle that you never thought of, and then also makes you feel comforted. What a gem of a comedian.
I can’t believe anyone would heckle her. It would be funny if she just asked the guy who yelled out an old timey slur who brought him here from his assisted living facility, but then I’d feel like I’m insulting all the other old people there who aren’t bad.
I adore her, and for the same reasons.
Well said! I hope Maria hears that she is a beautiful gem of a human being as well & that her comedy and openness help others ❤️
😮c@@Jenny_Oblivion
Maria’s words about being overwhelmed with things that seem easy for most people are important and helpful
I relate so much
@@48gtm3s2f Me too!
💯 Definitely, she's a healer! 💖🤟🏼✌🏼
I didn’t know she actually had these mental illnesses. Def will be checking out her book.
This Neal and Maria combo is the shit. So funny and so fun to watch Neal laugh this much. Maria is a genius, obvs.
Neal seems really genuine and at ease in this one. It's nice to see, and I hope they do things together in the future.
I gave it a double take and clicked on it immediately. I love their...acceptance.
☺️🌹🌼
Maria is one of the GOATS in my opinion. Definitely on a Mount Rushmore of comedians.
ABSOLUTELY!!!
I agree, I absolutely love her but oddly Americans don't agree and I can only assume because she's been so inconsistent and not in our faces enough over the last 15 years 🤷 what ever it is they're wrong she's flippin hilarious
It's fun watching two hilarious people make each other laugh. They both laughed so much. Love this series.
Lady Dynamite is my favorite show of all time. I love Maria.
Corn!
Have felt this for years. This woman is one of the most naturally funny female comedians I've ever seen. Awesome to see her on this show.
This is possibly your best blocks episode yet. She was game and went all in. Loved it.❤
She's literally the perfect guest for this podcast.
@@dpclerks09 Yep, she knows how to talk the talk, and then slip in the occasional joke.
I am new to Neil's Blocks, he is my new therapist 😂
I have loved Maria Bamford for years, and I am thrilled that she made Neal laugh so many times during this pod! I've never seen him laugh so hard😂🎉
Maria's so cool and kind, and hilarious. Some of her jokes float into my mind at necessary moments, and I'm so grateful.
Agreed, & same, well said!! She's a healer to me for sure!💖🤟🏼✌🏼
Woo boy, is Maria Bamford the perfect guest for this show. Her act is from outer space, but she has the best act outs in the biz.
Maria is a treasure and a legend, and if she ever went away I would be the saddest of sad sacks
Literally gasped when I saw this pop up in my feed. Got to see her perform for the first time last month after being a fan for years. Could not love her more❤❤❤

Maria is one of the nicest (not to mention funniest) people I’ve ever met, comedian or or otherwise.
Got to see her at Acme in MPLS in the mid 00s
Just now realizing I’ve been a Maria Bamford fan for nearly 20 years. The Comedians of Comedy shaped my personality and sense of humor more than I could know. Keeping up with Patton, Zach, and Brian as a guy would be impressive. Giving them a run for their money as a woman is just incredible.

Comedians of Comedy was such a moment in standup history. It was like seeing the future of standup all in one place.
The scene where she’s leaving a message on her answering machine for her fans was ❤ (chefs kiss) : funny and sweet
Lady Dynamite needs to come back. That show was my mental health issues' dream.
Maria continues to give us key mental health information that has genuinely lessened my anxieties and given me more motivation ever since I heard it, we live
One of the funniest and most original comedians ever. Thanks for everything Maria!
I love that she makes Neal laugh so hard. When comics can do that to one another, magical.
My favorite mental health comedian on my favorite mental health comedy podcast. 🤣
Maria is the voice of my anxiety in my head, sometimes Maron lol
I love the understated way that Neal cracks up. Like, his response to Maria's "I always did it through the butt," was the equivalent of someone else having an aneurysm from laughter. @22:00
I was JUST thinking about Maria the other day. She’s a legend and hilarious. So good to see her on here.

Her “Dark Side of Comedy” episode is absolutely amazing.
Narcissism isn't just thinking very highly of one's self, it's putting one's own ego ahead of the wellbeing of others.
Bravo. One step closer to all of us talking about mental health with compassion AND humor. More please. Thank you both for your vulnerability and modelling healthy laughter at the darkness of feeling like our personal suffering is uniquely horrible.
I will be so sad, if/when this podcast ends. These are the best celebrity conversations
Maria Bamford's work is one thing me and my very mentally ill father both love - and thats the power of comedy
My most favorite comedian of all time!!!!
Bamford has been on my Mt. Rushmore of favorite comedians for over a decade. She's a goddamn genius.
I love Maria! She is so funny! Thank you for having her on the show
_"Hate speech is also a craft."_ I love Bamford's positive outlook in spite of the nihilism.
This episode is gonna be like a credit scroll. Love Maria Bamford.
I discovered Maria via Dr Katz. I am only 27 and I am glad I still get to see real talents like Maria on platforms like this she is so funny and talented.
First heard of Maria about 20 years ago on Bob and Tom. Glad to see she’s still going strong!
Great pod, Bamford's a friggin legend. What do we have to do to get Bo Burnham on blocks?
That would be an all-timer podcast.

A movie about Maria with Tim & Eric is already one of my favorites, even though it was just a joke 😂

Tim and Eric. Perfect. Another banger. Best podcaster/interviewer period.

Love these two together. What a great conversation.
more projects with Neal and Maria, por favor!!!
i knew this one was coming and i am so happy it did.
Saw Maria and Jackie in Austin several years ago. Fantastic show. The world is better with Maria in it!
Maria is the only one I’ve wanted to hear answer Neil’s final question, and her answer was so much better than I had anticipated!❤
Brilliant!! Neal & Maria should write & partner on something! I like how they vibe together-really sharp💕👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Maria Bamford is an unbelievable comic. How to Win is still incredible! Nice to hear from someone you don't normally see on podcasts. Great episode.
