Design advice that actually makes sense, love it! Designers need to tackle the elephant in the room, the television, so many times I see rooms that look beautiful but not a reflection of most peoples reality.
Finally! Someone that I agree with about TV AND artwork placement. And, I didn't find you snarky at all, just honest and passionate about how you feel with your opinions.
"Girl, you're a hobbit" 🤣🤣🤣 Husband, kids & I are six feet. We're putting art up high, in line with our architecture & 10' ceilings, not for some theoretical short guest. It's *OUR* home, not a gallery. "Go back to your hobbit hole" 🤣 Thank you! Love it.
Thank you!! Finally someone who addresses functionality. Most of us don’t live on a page in a magazine. I want a space that I can enjoy and live in. Also, I love learning about design so I’m in for the long videos. Keep em coming!
I feel like the eye height advice is due in part to people who hang small pieces of art really high, and then there is a huge gap with nothing between the art and, say, the sofa beneath. The problem isn’t eye height, it’s that the art has not been hung well relative to the other features in the room (like the sofa). Also, that blazer is fantastic.
So glad you said don't worry about art being hung a little too high. I accidentally put ugly holes in my wall at the wrong height, so had to use the top of my art to cover them up.
Our living room was never used as an every day space until we put a tv in. Now it’s our favorite space to hang out. Bingeing cool shows and watching movies is part of our lifestyle, and it makes me happy to use and enjoy our living room every day.
@@GarrettLeChic I also appreciate the fact that your home is different. It’s not an RH Dupe or Studio McGee wannabe. It’s stately! Even though my personal style is more than contemporary than traditional, I love your vids.
Okay I love this. I love that you’re honest and voice your opinion/facts regardless of the trending “design advice”. I swear most you tubers copy and paste video talking points from the most popular youtubers and it ends up being the same old “information” just being presented by different youtubers. It’s just so refreshing to hear and see something different.
Love your flat screen TV advice. I actually found a beautiful place to hang my TV..I was concerned....but if beautifully place and does not take away from my beautiful home. Thank you for the boost of confidence..
TV above a fireplace is wonderful . You get the best of both worlds . I can't believe it's such a big deal . I really love the idea of putting artwork on the TV .
OMG! So I'm doing a GarrettLeChic marathon today. This video was so funny! Your comments as to people who complain had me rolling!!!!! You not only give great advise but are very entertaining with your comments. Love you!
Thank goodness someone finally is talking about living in a house. My living room is very weird and I can only put my couch on the rug. I’ve never understood the hang the art work at eye level. I always thought everyone is different heights.
This discussion about hanging artwork in a line or aligned with the architecture is life altering. I’ve never heard anything that makes more sense visually.
I love all the examples you give! I’m in the process of building a new home and we are literally starting from scratch and I’ve been so stressed on all these rules and trying to inject warmth into an all gray builder home lol so thank you for just having common sense. I’m like I’m gonna put a tv in my living room if that’s where I’ll use it 😂
One of your best videos! Your information about hanging art to relate to architecture or furniture was so right on. Also, I can hardly wait to see how you do the tv over your fireplace.
Yes about the artwork! I live in an older apartment, and the rooms are ridiculously high. And I'm very short. I just simply cannot hang all my art at "eye level", it would look dumb as hell in my 3 meter+ high apartment.
I appreciate you telling us how to break these rules and still have it look great. I loved the tips on how to proportion the tv to the fireplace. Makes so much sense!
Garrett, you're the type of person that I'd like to hang out with. I feel everything you said made sense, I love it when I could learn something from someone. Keep doing what you do. Thanks so much for this.
Such a great video especially about the TV! I love watching TV but I also love visually appealing spaces so this was the problem-solving advice I needed to hear. Love your channel!
This video made me happy! I live in Scandinavia - and have a mixed style Scandinavian, farmhouse/boho... I collect art, and have dog and cats - I love interior design, get ideas - but do it my way! I love your videos because you are good at this, but also outside the box!
I have just discovered your channel and I am subscribing if for nothing else but for the fact that you are a RUclips designer and you have colour in your space....hallelujah 🙌🏽
I'm late in commenting but I had to say THANK YOU about the hanging of artwork. That makes so much more sense and how it can help other features pop. You're the only designer on youtube to say this. I've done to an extent of what you've said and now I'm going to back and add the finishing touches according to your guideline.
Finally a designer that isn't a completely unrealistic idiot about TVs above the fireplace! THANK YOU! Unfortunately it's the only place it works sometimes. And also thank you for these legit *educational* and thorough videos--this is the kind of practical and useful info I've been looking for for so long that no one else on youtube seems able to provide. PS i appreciate that you don't care about the videos being short and that you take the time to explain your points (which also means you're not just rattling off the same exact reasons/examples/whatever as everyone else).
Thanks for your lovely comment! I'm glad you are enjoying the content. We appreciate your support of our work and channel by subscribing. It means a lot. :)
Thank you! There is so much bad advice on RUclips and thank you for highlighting some of the worst of it. . I actually heard a RUclips "decorator" declare that saturated colors look cheap so if that were true you and I both have a lot to sell on Facebook market place. He even dared to say Miles Redd's decor looks cheap (with apologies) but his Ikea curtains look luxurious. His Ikea curtains look fresh, clean and pretty but not luxurious at all. All that said, I don't love a TV over the fireplace just because they tend to be too high and give you a crick in the neck. That said, I have seen it work well as you demonstrated in photos. In a long room where you can get some distance from the TV the neck strain shouldn't be a huge issue either, or with a lower fireplace mantel. Most importantly though, sometimes one has no other choice but to hang it over the fireplace.
❤️❤️❤️. I agree with everything you said . As a side bar ... My son is 6’6” he’s always been a big kid . Now hubby and I are smaller . Our son always hangs the art work and mirrors high but they are always in perfect alignment and look good .
Ahhhhh!!! Garrett … soo much common sense!! I always love your content!! We are building our new home and the only sensible place to put the tv is above the fireplace!! Thank you for making me feel validated and more confident to proceed!! Also you comments about the size if the tv is so helpful as well! In fact everything you said is helping to increase my confidence in what and how to start to decorate our home. I think it may look bare for a while after we move in …. But that will be because I need to live in the space to properly consolidate what pieces to buy! You (and your gorgeous doggies !) are just great! Thanks 😊
I love long videos especially when detailed reasoning/explanation is given. That information truly gives me things to think about and if I want to change my vision for my home. BTW I never agreed with the hanging of artwork at eye level- I am 5’ 3”, some friends/family 6’, always wondered whose eye level. 😂. I usually pick a height that I like , too bad for others, but I never thought of creating a line to help with hanging of art. Great tip! Just started watching your videos a couple of weeks ago, although our styles are different I love the fact I get some great ideas to ponder on.
New subcriber. This is the second video of yours I have watched. You are so smart and reasonable. I'm trying to decorate my new home and I'm really sick of hearing every decor channel regurgitate the same "rules." I'm going to watch all of your videos.
One thing I have learned, if the fireplace is low enough it is fine to put up your tv (with a support strap of course or installed on a wall support) and it does look great (though a bit harder to clean). But if it's a high fireplace your neck will get very, very sore if your sofa is too close. Just saying, I learned from having our tv over our fireplace at our last home, our necks actually were hurting after a few days (but it did look really nice). In our new home, the fireplace is as tall as me, I had to put it on a set of Japanese steps I stacked until we can find a good entertainment center. Part of the problem is the furniture quality is getting worse and worse and there are few really beautiful entertainment centers that I like. I don't know what to do! Everything is so cookie cutter these days and I like things a bit more luxurious. I love the gold frame idea! Wow!
Hi Garret!! You are a treasure!! Thank you so much for sharing your amazing informative knowledge with us!! You are helping me so much to make my home beautiful!! Love you!! ❤️
Great advice! You’re taking some of the stress out of putting a home together, and I appreciate the fresh take on these things that have been regurgitated over and over by everyone else on RUclips.
I always try to give you real advice even if it goes against what everyone else is saying, design is for real people in real homes! Not just instagram photos!
Loved this video. Very practical and I'm sure I'll put some of this advice to good use! I see tons of videos posted about design rules but rarely anything about breaking those rules, when it makes sense to do that and why it works. The rebel in me would love to see more content about that!!
Thank you for sharing how to judge the size of a TV to hang over your fireplace, and seeing it is OK to put a TV there. If someone comes by and they don’t like it, then I guess they don’t have to watch it at my house.
I grew up in the south and it was too hot and we were too poor for a fireplace. We had a TV cabinet that we could close the doors when guests came over. Now, as an adult and living in the Midwest, our giant flat screen is wall mounted and alot of the "rules for polite company" my mom followed are out the window! I could care less if someone that enters my home doesn't like my TV. They can gtfo. I just like my house to look nice for me and my family. I value comfort and calm, somewhere we can walk into and say "ahhhh" with a content sigh when we get home, a refuge. But also a place I'm not embarrassed to lead my daughters girl scout meetings at, or invite my inlaws to. I love your channel btw! Excellent advice and entertaining too.
I really like how you explain the design principle behind an idea and then show examples that conform to that idea but also examples that are exceptions and why they're exceptions. I found all the different photos really informative but I'd love even more! Like all different kinds of chairs on rugs or even more living room layouts with tvs that you think are successful. Bring on the long videos!
Please make more videos! You make so much sense in regard to how best to design a space to actually live in! I wish you the best here on RUclips. I think you will do extremely well with your knowledge of interior design 🥰
Garrett you can talk but it's everything I want and need to hear and it's just the right stuff. You have so much to offer those of us who love art, furnishings, design and décor! I am enjoying every moment of your videos. They are alive with ideas, excellent advice and I appreciate you! I wish I was a billionaire, you would certainly be my choice for design!
On artwork... YESSSSS!!! I get so frustrated by galleries that hang the art above my head (true story) but even worse is when the art is placed in a living space without regard to the space. One should stand at the entrances of the room and the look should make the space feel harmonious.
Ugh finally SOUND advice on RUclips. Clearly you have style and you know why you’re doing. I’m buying my first house soon and I’m researching as much as possible. You just gave me invaluable advice.
Thank you! In my living room, I'll either have the TV above the fireplace or the back of the couch to the fireplace, just as you described. There's no place else to put it. Windows on one side, an open-plan archway on the other. Of course it's better to have it above the fireplace. It's a rental. I can't change the architecture of the room. I really appreciate your down-to-earth advice.
All good points on the hanging of art.... AND art should be in relationship to the items in the room and below the art. For example, please don't hang a GIANT piece of art over a delicate chair, or conversely, please don't hang a tiny, tiny art piece over a giant console on a 20 foot ceiling. It shouldn't have to be said, but once you see these faux pas over and over, IT NEEDS TO BE SAID!
I think modern tv location is fascinating. When TVs first came out, they were low to the ground. Then set at table height. Now they are barroom height in so many people’s homes. It hurts my neck when the tv is hung at fireplace height.
This is such good advice! I love how your fireplace mantel and the artwork behind you are in line, it's very visually pleasing. Your detailed explanation about how to place art is fantastic and helps me understand the reasoning behind this advice.
This is great advice! I especially like the idea of lining your pictures with an architectural object in the house. Also loved what you said about the infamous tv-over-fireplace.
Love your information! And your advice on area rugs encouraging people to think for themselves reminds me of the rules of thumb in fine art - they're there as _guidelines_ . It's fine to break the rules if: a) you know you're breaking them, b) you're breaking them for a purpose, and c) the result gives you something you want that following the rules wouldn't yield. Totally agree on the issue of how high to hang the art. The visual environment needs to work as a whole, it's as simple as that. As you pointed out, if I hung my artwork for my eye level (I'm 4'11") it would be irritatingly low, both in terms of others enjoying the art, and in terms of the visual balance of the walls. As for TVs, we've hidden them inside attractive cabinets, banished them to non-public spaces, and these days, we just keep ours in the closet when we're not using it, which is most of the time. Just as life is too short to spend on activities we don't enjoy, visual space is also limited and I want everything in my field of vision to be something I enjoy. But I get that some people do use their TVs a lot and it makes sense for them to have them out in their living room and your reasoning on how to handle seems spot-on.
Design advice that actually makes sense, love it! Designers need to tackle the elephant in the room, the television, so many times I see rooms that look beautiful but not a reflection of most peoples reality.
I agree! We live in spaces, not just sit in them! They HAVE to work!
FINALLY someone who does actually designs room to be lived in!
True. Not everybody lives in mansions
Finally! Someone that I agree with about TV AND artwork placement. And, I didn't find you snarky at all, just honest and passionate about how you feel with your opinions.
You can’t please everyone🤷🏻♂️ but I’m glad you agree!
Your space has so much personality and personal style. I love that it’s not cookie cutter all white everything 😍
Thank you so much!! Your home should always reflect you and the things you love!🙌🏻
Love that these videos are not just opinion based! I'm learning and taking note!
Thank you so much Ambrosia! I love being able to really give you the facts about design!

So true! Small art can be the hardest to hang, and like I said I love to collage small art to create a bigger impact! The blazer is from Zara!
Absolutely - it’s for the people who hang art and photos just below the ceiling. Ok, lemme just grab a ladder to check out your family photos…
So glad you said don't worry about art being hung a little too high. I accidentally put ugly holes in my wall at the wrong height, so had to use the top of my art to cover them up.

Thank you so much! These videos aren’t stopping anytime soon!🙌🏻
Yes, for long videos!!! I love your “rants”!

Love that! Now that I know, you can expect some soon!
Thanks so much for your kind remarks! New video this Thursday 12noon PST.
😀😀😀
Great advice thanks for the permission to put the TV in the room you watch it in x
You're so welcome!🤣
I love how you give advice for all types of spaces! I'm so tired of designers giving advice based on their home. Just subscribed!
Thank you so much! Welcome to the channel!
Totally agree. You're so insightful and knowledgeable! Thank you for the guidance.
Thank you so much!
On artwork... YESSSSS!!!
I get so frustrated by galleries that hang the art above my head (true story) but even worse is when the art is placed in a living space without regard to the space. One should stand at the entrances of the room and the look should make the space feel harmonious.
So true!
Thank you Garrett! Such a wonderful and valuable advice ❤️
Yay! Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed!😊
All your suggestions make perfect sense (and, so far, reinforce my opinion that I’m doing everything right! 😂).
Love that for you!💁🏻♂️
Ugh finally SOUND advice on RUclips. Clearly you have style and you know why you’re doing. I’m buying my first house soon and I’m researching as much as possible. You just gave me invaluable advice.
Thank you so much! Be sure to check out my renovation mistakes video, It will help you with what to look out for in your new home!
Hello! Thank you so much for the great content. This is such helpful information!
Thank you so much Carmen!
You have so many great advice! Truly livable decor…hope people keep finding you on RUclips.
Thank you so much! The channel is growing every day. We have come a long way in less than a year, but we are just getting started!
I really like all your tips. I agree with everything.
Yes! Scale is one of the most important elements in any design! Art has to fit the space!
I think modern tv location is fascinating. When TVs first came out, they were low to the ground. Then set at table height. Now they are barroom height in so many people’s homes. It hurts my neck when the tv is hung at fireplace height.
Love it Garrett! At the end of the day, to each his own...
Love your content! 😊
Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
I love that! "rules of thumb" how spot on!
Thanks for your honest advice. 💥🌻🌞
You are so welcome!!
I haven't had a tv in years & years but thought of getting one recently. Never thought of putting it over the fireplace.
