I watch several decorator channels in addition to yours, and HANDS-DOWN it is YOU ALONE who shares the most helpful, practical and WORTHWHILE concepts which the others seldom--if ever--draw upon.. And as you know, it's ALL in the details!! And heeding YOUR tutorials will make the difference between an abode that's just 'so-so' and one which has been infused with that 'special something'.

Love this. My Mom was a designer for windows and fabrics and people balked at prices and never under the effort and beauty gained from a designer. Good designers I find enjoy all styles done well and will design in a way that represents the person or family and feel like them. Not everyone wants a farmhouse😁

Speaking of 'art'- I had a large chunk of wall which I needed something for. I had not much money. Had a piece of screen printed heavy linen from the thrift store, so I built a frame out of 2x2s and stretched it over, stapling it on the back. It's about 3.5 x 4 ft and picks up all the colours in the room and cost about 20 bucks. Be creative! :)

Best advice ever, Garrett! Enough already with so many "design content creators" and their redundant advice. What's new at Home Goods, Amazon, Pottery Barn, etc, etc. They don't necessarily teach, they just tend to promote (in many cases) trendy, useless stuff to buy. You know your craft so well and clearly are able to intellectually teach us something we can learn and apply in our own spaces. Absolutely love your channel (and your humor 🙂)!

LOVE what you said about "your style". A great point of view to avoid the mercantile traps out there. You should eventually expand on that. You are right: we keep being brainwashed about definite styles, while our personality and comfort are overlooked if we follow the experts sometimes, and this is nonsense. This ends up with rooms nobody uses. Also, the conventions can be a hibdrance: gotta have a dining room, can't entertain in the kitchen, must have a guest bedroom, while your home office is in the living room and you have no guests... we must learn to listen to our own unique tastes and needs. I definitely see a video on all this from our favorite Mr Lechic.

My favorite piece of advice is using something you love to build the rest of the room. My favorite rooms are inspired by a piece of art or a fabric that the person loves, and you can see their personality all over the room when they build off of it. It can make you feel warm and embraced being in the room.

Hi there, I do not generally follow any trends. I do appreciate seeing what is new as far as sustainability. But I don’t change with most of my styles or tastes. I do not need to buy more, I’m mostly trying to downsize. Occasionally trading one item I like for one I like better of higher quality and more sustainable value. Like I have old beautiful wool blankets that I was hoping to either make into quilt insides or make duvets for because they shed. I found some vintage sheets I absolutely love for fabric. I have decided for even my down comforters Duvets are very useful and I won’t have to wash the larger inside items as much. I am also learning about ways to gently strip ok furniture with eco friendly materials and use more sustainable materials to refinish my wood projects. Not painting them. I don’t own any very expensive furniture pieces. One beautiful old but fixer upper mahogany writing desk from 1910 I got for $50 is beautiful but needs refinishing and a new top piece ( veneer).I have a nearly custom fitted black glass to protect the top. I think when buying furniture or drapes, paints, etc one should consider the ethics and sustainability. I try and use the best options I can afford. Which being an senior on a fixed income would leave me to being rather creative with my choices. Like you’ve mentioned you need not leave options out. I have used beautiful fabrics from vintage sheets found at thrift stores and yard sales. It’s amazing what a 100% percale sheet can stand up in length of time! And leather sofas! Or vintage chairs and frames and footstools. I find amazing silver pieces.

I love the colorful artwork and thanks for clearing up the mystery of hanging artwork properly. I use artwork in the same way as part of a vignette, collage or stand alone. I naturally did that because it looked better. I said the same thing, if I have to hang it eye level...I used to say who's eye? My husbands 6' tall and I'm 5'4"...! lol Re: the newest thing, if you notice you'll find the very inexperienced "decorators" are pushing the newest things because they are being paid to. Most of them do not even have formal training and just enjoy decorating. I call them the Blind leading the blind decorators.

I agree about hanging artwork. If I follow the advice that I put it at my eye level that's an issue. I'm 5 foot two, on a good day with cowboy boots and my hair proofed up :-) but my ceilings are 10 foot tall. So it would look stupid to have a picture at my eye level.

Center it midway between floor and ceiling. The center of the art piece will be roughly your eye level. If it feels sparse you can add things around the original art piece.

Style is something I think everybody has, However, most of the time “insecurity” causes us to listen to other voices, and we don’t give ourselves the chance to pick and choose the things that we really love. I really believe if you pick and choose the things that you really love and give yourself a chance to put them together. You will find that they work. I love what you said about fabric! My daughter is redoing her very open living room and overwhelmed she asked me what to do. I said go to the fabric store and find one piece of fabric that you absolutely love! You can pull every single thing you need from that. I think that’s such sound advice.

I’m not a great seamstress, but the one thing I’m good at is curtains/drapes. It’s frankly very physical work and I’ve figured out how to do pinch pleats, even with non-custom curtains. I find you do have to sometimes buy longer and/or wider curtains than the standard sizes, then hem them. My back hates when I decide to get new curtains.
Love your inspiration fabric! It’s not what I’d select for myself, but you use it so wisely and tastefully. But that’s no surprise.
I find it interesting (No, actually NOT interesting) when online influencers follow what I call design recipes. All primitives. All RH dupes. All PB dupes. Do you own nothing interesting? Inherited? From travel? Handmade? Artistic? It takes a lifetime to collect and curate a home. you can’t do it in a “haul.”

Thank you! I’ve always found it’s kind of simple to think that your home has to be one style. I find spaces that are overly faithful to one style tend to be a little boring and not very interesting. I have no clue what my “style” is but I love the pieces that I have and people often mention how much they like my home. I have items that are from different design styles yet they all work together. To me, that makes a home.

The hanging section helps me a lot. I have been agonizing over that for a while now for my family room and master bath. I'm going to get some stuff framed and it's not all "coordinated" or expensive art but I decided I don't care. I got the pieces for specific reasons that have meaning to me. Great advice on custom drapes! We have a huge window in my Victorian home's living room window. Years ago I paid good money for the most beautiful pinch pleated draperies, custom made. I chose a very neutral color, and when we updated the color of our walls and furniture, they still were able to be used. I hadn't planned on that but was grateful we could keep them. It is well worth the money on custom drapes, also my drapes have a great lining that keeps the cold from seeping through out of the original glass windows in my home on cold Midwestern winters when they are drawn. Loved this advice! ❤️

Garett's, I love this episode. Everything you delivered here are solid gold. On the drapery, your comment is exactly how I feel. I don't understand why pocket curtain are still in market. I use pinch pleat, they are stylish, easy to use, also very affordable if only you're willing to spend a little time to understand how to hook and pinch them. I don't sew, yet I can still hang them beautifully without paying custom drapery services which I used years ago when I didn't know better. On the artwork, I learned from you earlier. It makes so much sense to me and I have raised most of mine to align with the architecture point in my home. And suddenly my home appeared to be well finished. Prof. LeChic, thank you for such a helpful video. It’s really easy to be sucked into the “What’s your style?” vortex. I always felt constrained by that concept, but as a young newlywed, tried to fit in whatever category “experts” said was right. Then I grew the hell up and became more confident in my ability to choose things that please my husband and me - both aesthetically and in a tactile sense. I find such delight in making a unique home that’s beautiful, comfortable and true to who we are. Thank you for encouraging us to be ourselves and trust our own sense of beauty.
You are the TRUTH, My Dear. Hallelujah, Amen! You’re out here preaching the gospel of Fabulous for the people. xoxo

Thank you for calling out this relentless trend of what’s in and what’s out. Trends are for the anxious. I prefer to decorate with pieces I love in a timeless style that will endure. There is no reason to go out every year and buy ‘stuff’ just because you need to be in fashion. That goes for fashion, too. Buy classics in the best quality you can afford and you’ll wear them for years.

I subscribed just now not just because I've been following popular design content creators but because you actually stood out by talking about practical style advice. I've been hovering around your videos for a while now. You've done really good ones. Idk if this is your best video that I've seen of yours lately but I will say this video is highly appreciated. It means a lot to me as a viewer to not feel being forced to be fed trends that change every 6 months. Although I see the importance of those videos, I will appreciate more content peppered with sound design advice. I just moved to a microstudio and I want every piece in my home to be impactful because of the limited space. Curtains and color palette sounds like a good start. Thanks again! I hope to watch more vids in the future.

I do not think those are investment-required pieces, and they probably take up so much unnecessary storage that in a few years, they began to look like junk and, regrettably, purchases. Another thing I agree with is the color wheel; seriously, is it an art & craft class? Lol. I cannot end without mentioning "What's your design style." That can look a bit boring and predictable. So I agree. Thanks for sharing. LOVE you!

Loved this! And yes, I hate using the color wheel for interior design! You need something to inspire the color in a space.
I implemented the design in my house in layers, with pieces I’ve had since my first house.
When I built my house over twenty years ago I made sure it had great bones, high end faucets, beautiful moldings, limestone and walnut floors, eight foot solid doors with molding, so with less furniture, it still looked stunning. Then I added things over the years to my house and the interiors. also just slightly adjusting the colors of the walls.
I always get compliments on my house. And I’m not tired of it or feel it needs updating.
    Great advice!

These were great tips! My addition would be that I hate how some designers say to NEVER use flat or matte paint and you always have to start with eggshell because it’s easy to clean. I don’t really think a lot of people often have to clean the walls, for one. And two, even if so, many high quality flat paints today are very washable. It’s just the most forgiving finish and def the best choice for some rooms, imo.

Totally agree we had a beautiful little mid-century war house with plaster walls that I painted grey (it was 2010) and cream in a high quality flat paint. It was so forgiving on the plaster walls and had such a beautiful depth. Now that I have kids my trim doors and kitchen/living room are all eggshell but as soon as those little monsters grow up … back to flat!

I completely agree about curtains! For the first time in my life I had custom curtains made! (I picked them up yesterday!)
I wish I had all the money back I wasted on packaged curtains! (False economy!)
It was definitely more expensive but to be able to choose a fabric you fall in love with is the most wonderful thing and worth every penny. I went without curtains for a long time because I was determined not to waste money this time.
I found some very beautiful fabric that I kept coming back
to after looking at dozens and dozens of other fabrics.
There are ways to save too. I found the fabric online and it was about $10/ yd cheaper and by word of mouth found a woman that makes curtains out of her home and she was a bargain!
Fabric is definitely one of those “you get what you pay for” things.
    I have found also that
I need less “stuff” in the room too
because the curtains are a statement in and of themselves.
They’re gorgeous I can’t imagine getting tired of them for many years!
Love your channel and your beautiful fabric choice!

I'm already all over the place, can't stand labels, and definitely don't want to live surrounded by the latest soon to be not fad. You always bring great content and focus that I can work with and keep in mind while creating (it's constant!) my little haven. I had grommet drapes up, so tired of them so until I could find something different I rehung and had grommet hems lol. I definitely use an inspiration piece and pull/match other colors... also in my personal style of dress. This feels more natural...never did like the color wheel! It's been stored away for years!
