I started RC with zipzaps as a tween. I then upgraded to x-mods, and finally hobby grade. One thing I liked doing was testing all of the optional parts to find the best combination. It turned out stickiest tires, dual motor (hot glue) using the fastest (purple?) motors was the winningest combination. That was zipzaps, i did the same thing for x-modz.
this actually shows why my preference of car for race is not a short car, but neither too long, and preference of control and steering over speed. goes for RC, irl and videogame cars alike.

@TomleyRC Hexbug has been bought out, and/or something else major has happened or is happening. The Entertainer toy shops have been selling these for £36 for the big red set and £20 for the smaller yellow set, that's 60% off each. I went all in! These existed about 15 years ago, they were called X Mods and had real licensed cars. I use to have the Yellow R34 Skyline and a 04 Cobra R Mustang, it came red but my dad and I painted it black.
I actually owned the Red one ('21 Night Hawk) (well actually 3 :P) and I just heavily modified mine. Aftermarket parts that I installed: 1: Yeah Racing Ball Bearings for Mini Z AWD. 2: GLRacing 10.5mm Universial Swing Shafts(the ones that have a plastic/metal ring because the rubber ones will rub against inside the wheel knuckle, also trim the pins that goes in the cups to prevent those that touch or won't fit through the bearings). 3: Red Aluminium wheel nuts. 4: Kyosho Mini Z Narrow Drift Tires (Positivety will give it some more ground clearence than a Mini Z, if using the original Hexmods Wheels on them, Make sure they're secure with a tiny sliver of Blu-Tack). 5: Another set of Red parts that are spray painted semi Matte Black to give it a carbon fibre effect one for the rear bumper and the hood/bonnet with the vents in the middle, others are in a ziploc bag already painted for swapping (+ a second black engine cover turned into a roof spoiler). 6: Xmods GT wing from the Red Supra Body Kit (that I screwed into a rear Taillight spoiler to give it a sexy look) 7: Xmods stock Exhaust tip from the evo 8 for the rear bumper (retrofitting required) 8: Another set of Headlights from the second Night Hawk which now have 3mm holes and Coloured Black to show some looks. 9: Any sort of aluminium Narrow Wheels that have 0mm offset (the same to all the hexmods wheels that come in a set) 10: Aluminium Brakes for decoration. and that's it for now.
Oh yeah I also cut a hole on the inner roof part to let the sunroof part of the car look much better but made sure to leave any grooves to prevent the roof parts being forcely pushed in.
this look like a bigger version of those rc cars I played with as a kid call ZIPZAPS they where sold at radioshacks. had all the same mods as these to.
Cheaper versions of the old Radio Shack Xmods. The aftermarket for xmods was insane. I had a full gpm aluminum awd little beast. Speeds could be damn near uncontrollable.
If you like the cars, you should check out the truck. It looks like a mid 70s Ford truck. I think it's called the vulture. I have the red car and the truck. I really like them.
Kyosho Mini-Z is still King in this class of rc-cars. With the use of AAA Batteries you can drive round the clock. And the steering is really smooth with a real servo.. Ofcourse the price is also King...
Umm the xmods was the original one of these they was so much better way more parts to upgrade or customize. Very similar but I was getting my xmlds up to 35 mph which was fast and we had a top ten drag lost at school like street outlaws does but this was way before street outlaws and I was always 1st and 2nd on the list they was beasts and we would drag race them in the hallways during lunch for a dollar per race so if you win you get the other guys dollar. I might get one Ioce real rc race ars and race 1/10 scale at our local indoor carpet track and I have a huge mini z track in my shop so I might get a few of these to race as well looks fun and cheaper then mini z. Well they look way to twitchy for a cheaper mini rc car to buy a few of them to have races with friends since all ymmfeiends don't have mini z and those are expensive but if I make Emm AWD then it might be do able
I just got one of the Pro Series Elite Raceway kits. Seriously, I wish this thing was out when I was a kid. Ah well, at least I'm an adult with disposable income now.
Reminds you of X-Mods? I see a borderline carbon copy. Even the trigger on the controller looks identical to the old XMod controller trigger, and the controller was altered to look less.. weaponized?

6: Xmods GT wing from the Red Supra Body Kit (that I screwed into a rear Taillight spoiler to give it a sexy look)
7: Xmods stock Exhaust tip from the evo 8 for the rear bumper (retrofitting required)
8: Another set of Headlights from the second Night Hawk which now have 3mm holes and Coloured Black to show some looks.
9: Any sort of aluminium Narrow Wheels that have 0mm offset (the same to all the hexmods wheels that come in a set)
10: Aluminium Brakes for decoration.
and that's it for now.
Great for kids to play around with, but who says I can’t get it just for myself
I spent 265.00 on 1 car and it's upgrades...RiP Xmods and RadioShack
Lots of great micro RC cars coming out now, but still nothing that matches the incredible Dr!ft RC.
You driving for a while you get used to it
I've seen this in Target for years. And I never seem to be in there without the girlfriend. She already knows I'm a child...
I think the UK release was quite recent
Come on Tom back in the 80s I raced modified scalextric 94 ft circuit Chris red F I raced Williams and if I won he always said he's haven a bad day.
Just like x mods.. have three laying around somewhere.. loved swapping stuff with friends
I almost bought these when I first seen them
If you like the cars, you should check out the truck. It looks like a mid 70s Ford truck. I think it's called the vulture. I have the red car and the truck. I really like them.
I found them on Amazon. I’m getting both, thanks for the cool products! Keep it up sir!
Has anyone tried putting a Tamiya Plasma Dash or Ultra Dash motors on these? lol
Kyosho Mini-Z is still King in this class of rc-cars. With the
use of AAA Batteries you can drive round the clock. And the steering is really smooth with a real servo.. Ofcourse the price is also King...
Very cool, do you have any idea why the UK version does not seem to include any track but the US version does?
They where around when you/we where kids but they where called Mini-z back then...
Its X-Mods with ALL the mods in one package. Why couldn't we get this in the US?
They were around when I was a little guy, probably 10-12 years old I'm now 35, they were called X-mods in the states
Reminds you of X-Mods? I see a borderline carbon copy. Even the trigger on the controller looks identical to the old XMod controller trigger, and the controller was altered to look less.. weaponized?
