And my son (9) thinks "cleaning" his room is a lot of work! I tell him all the time, you should see how hard it is to farm your own land! Now, that's work! (I don't know from experience, I am a city-slicker). I tip my hat to all of you. Great job, great experience, great respect, and appreciation.
I discovered your channel this past December. Fast forward to now and I am raising 5 ducks, 18 chickens, 4 guineas, and 2 turkeys here on the Navajo Nation. I love it I love it I love it. Instead of taking off to the city on weekends, I spend it working on the garden and tending to the birds. I tell ya thanks to you, your family, and your way of life...I am happier than ever. Thank you for being you and thank you for getting a homestead going way out here in the high desert. Cheers!
I noticed Mr Brown participating in every step down to processing his first chickens. A couple of more years and you will be on the line with your brothers. Teamwork makes the dream work is a true statement about your family and it's good to have great friends you can rely on too.
That’s a lot of meat! What a blessing to know exactly what you are putting into your body! Praying that one day we can do meat chickens for our family.
When I was growing up we used to pray before we ate. Seeing this process makes me think about that and the thanks that should be given for the food we eat. Including a little prayer for the life of the bird that feeds us. And seeing all the work you put into growing your food and the harvest of veggies and milk cows it just really makes me appreciate the food on my table. I do not support factory farming and hope that someday more of our country is fed by small farms like yours. Respect and gratitude for the food on our table and the hard work farmers like you do.
I hesitated to comment on your video. I am glad you process your own food and I am not criticizing, just trying to help. It looked like you only had one chicken in your plucker we put at least four at a time in ours (may only get three of the big chickens 6+lbs). We also catch the chickens close to dark and provide water, but no feed to clean out their crops. Makes it easier to eviscerate and reduces crops tearing. Really glad to see how involved your kids are in the process. The skills you are teaching them are invaluable.
I can't imagine the relief that you have from knowing your family will be fed! Hope you are getting a generator soon. Never know and with all that precious food. Great job Mr. Brown.
Hey Justin we Kill 50-60 chickens a week and we do turkeys also. When we do the turkeys we have to cut the legs off because they won’t spin easily in the plucker. If you wanna try one time the next time you butcher, we don’t cut the legs off the chickens just the turkeys
My late grandmother and her siblings were born near and before the turn of the 20th century. When they were teens and sub teen ages they would process meats for eating, take the horses and wagon to town for supplies, ride the Plains where they homestead all without an adult or parent. I miss grandmother Malone telling us stories. Happy your children have this amazing experience.
Loved watching Gideon, he is so cute. He was so proud of himself. Way to go Gideon xx. Everyone should be proud of themselves. Would love an apron like Lorraine's, love the chooks
Thank you for asking that. I was wondering the same thing :) We are going to a friend of a friends to learn how to butcher goats. We are planning on raising some and selling them, but what we don't sell we will eat.
some of the questions are so critical, maybe I think so because I've watched you from day one, years ago. I've seen the growth, the sharing and caring, the illnesses, the friends, the help coming from all over, how you store food, how you share it, how you feed everyone. what a system..
Watching Mr. Brown cut his chicken up was so special! He was making me so nervous and I thought he might cut himself.....but he prevailed and did a great job. He is growing up so fast. I wonder how many times In one day he said PAPA? He surely is just now fitting in the big scheme of farm life. Such a wonderful life lesson for all the children...they all work so very hard and I know you are very proud of them. Work ethic is vital for you to teach your children . They are all such a blessing!
Momma behind the scenes this time bagging n weighing... glad to see everyone hard at work. All done before lunch. Fantastic team work. Best way to end the vlog. I definitely agree ice bath in the afternoon.
So good! What a wonderful day you had. Wishing I had a plan like yours at your age. Although I do have an amazing garden in tall boxes as we are now in our mid 70's...we learned it is harder to garden in the ground as we are not as limber as we were.
Almost have the family (mostly the boss lady) convinced to go on this homestead adventure. Someday I hope to have little slice of heaven like you and yours.
They have the best kids. He pays them for their work but they earn everything they get and in turn it's their money to buy good things. Their money isn't even wasted. I love the work ethic he has taught them. They get up really early and do their chores too. I LOVE this family!!!
Love watching ur family ever day , little miss lilly warms my heart ❤ ♥ 💓 just to remind you tho that ducks need to be able to fully Bath even from small or can get very sick , I lost a whole years worth of ducks to not having bathing area for them
Can we have a 6 hour show of just Mr Brown before he grows up? He is the same age as my grandson and I can’t get enough of either one of those boys. Your kids are amazing, I hope you and the beautiful one are very proud. Hard to raise great kids these days. Congratulations on your harvest, them there are a lot of birds! Ps, Now back to rewatch “The Great American Farm Tour”. I see something new every time I watch it. ❤️
Thank you Justin and family for sharing all your experience and knowledge. Every time I watch one of your videos I feel like I can conquer the world, well maybe not the world but at least my developing homestead. My family and I watch your butchering videos every time we do our own butcher days. You truly inspire us. With that said I would like to share a piece of knowledge with you. Seeing you store your raw chicken above your raw milk concerns me. When storing things on shelves the food safely rule is RTE (ready time eat) Swim Walk Fly Reason being that if RTE foods drip on raw fish there will be no concern of food born illness because the fish gets cooked to 145 Fahrenheit minimum. If fish drips on beef, beef is cooked to higher minimum temp than fish. If beef drips on chicken, chicken is cooked to a higher temp than beef (165). My concern is that if any of your shrink wrapped poultry bags fail, raw poultry dripping may contaminate your raw milk which will not be cooked before you and your children drink it. This would expose you all to ecoli and salmonella. I would hate to see anyone get sick. I hope I explained this clearly. I can’t wait for the next video.
Go Gideon! Butcher that chicken, son!!! You did a great job! Now you all will have an amazing Thanksgiving & Christmas Dinner!!! I think I wouldn't be afraid to raise a Turkey or two myself now. They seem quite tame and easy to raise. Good friends good family, good time!🦃🦃🦃🦃❤🙏😊
Congrats guys on harvesting chickens and turkey everything looks really nice really smooth nice company that familiar faces that we see before God bless all of you seems like everything turns out beautiful a lot of helps know from beautiful cute kids hurray! . hurray.! for that .God bless you all stay healthy be happy Pease
Happy butcher day! I will be butchering my first “big “ batch (20) of c monsters august 2nd and I’m so glad I bought a plucker! I butchered 3 about 2 months ago and plucked by hand and it took forever! Lol I did have help though lol my 6 yr old helped a lot tiny fingers make a big difference lol any help from friends or family is always a big help. Gidian reminds me so much of my son hey pa pa hey papa hey papa except my son is hey dad hey dad hey dad lol this age is so great they want to learn so much and what better time to teach them the old school ways! Keep up the good work you guys are awesome!! God bless
I butchered and canned a few old hens by myself. It was the first time I made and canned bone broth. I’ll be butchering 28 meat birds and another few old hens this fall with me and myself. I hope my husband will help a little bit.
What a day! You all did a lot. I think you have your protein for another year. Pigs later this year. Glad you got the pig escaping taken care of. Thanks for sharing.
That was great to see you and Mr.Brown working on that chicken together, warm's the heart. Those turkey's were awfully stressed out but idk what you would do differently
Justin I'm having my first off the land meal Sunday. I pulled 2 Cornish cross for rotisserie and I grew potatoes, carrots and salad mix all from the yard. If the watermelons we're done that would've been snack too.
What an awesome work crew! Guidion (sorry not sure on spelling) did so awesome his first time. You all worked like crazy. Those are awesome wts on both birds for their ages. I was impressed. Looks like winter will have some terrific eating!
When you butcher the sheep and pigs you mentioned not wanting to stress them out before you harvest them. Does the same negative effects occur to the chickens and turkeys, or are they heartier and the stress of being caught and transported not effect them as much?
Question: why not gather them at dusk/almost dark when they are calm, put them in the trailer and cover with netting, keeping the trailer within the fencing for protection and just getting the trailer in the morning?
I got 11 meat chickens. They are chicks now. Also 8 laying hens. 19 birds! Most Ive had ever. Not even really allowed to have any where I live. 😬😉 living on the edge! Lol
“Papa I’m doing it” I love how much he says papa is adorable love your family god bless.
A parenting show about bringing up self sufficient kids. Bravo Justin and family.

120 chickens & turkeys butchered before lunch? That’s an efficient crew.
With my culinary background I love this kinda content. Great to see the kids involved in the butchery.
Gideon is so adorable.hes really been doing a lot
mr brown talks more and more every day and hes getting HUGE
His name is Gideon.
I noticed Mr Brown participating in every step down to processing his first chickens. A couple of more years and you will be on the line with your brothers. Teamwork makes the dream work is a true statement about your family and it's good to have great friends you can rely on too.

The most beautiful home cooler/freezer unit. So envious... in a good way... we should all have one

Follow The Veggie Boys on RUclips
Hi veggie boys
What kind of loss do you get on a turkey from butchering?
Does it run around a 3rd of live weight?
Good job Gideon!!!! Love how you all come together and help one another!
What a great crew you have. Since I'm close to Grandmother's age, I love watching her enthusiasm , she inspires me!
You had some great help! How could you have done it without them! - What a blessing.
Love the generosity in these homestead! Everithing is a good excuss to enjoy a party with friends and familly
My family usually butchers 100 hundred meat chickens, but this year we did 68 and we'll be getting another 70 meat chicks in the first week of August!
My late grandmother and her siblings were born near and before the turn of the 20th century. I just finished my first batch of Cornish x, the average weight was 8.5 lbs, with a handful over 10 lbs. Thank you for the inspiration Justin!
@Dale Keene how old were they to be so big?
Your children are amazing to be able to do things by themselves at such a young age.
Loved watching Gideon, he is so cute. He was so proud of himself. Way to go Gideon xx. Everyone should be proud of themselves. Would love an apron like Lorraine's, love the chooks
When you butcher as a group, is it traditional to share birds with those who come to help? Does this figure into how many birds you decide to raise?
YEs,.
Thank you for asking that. I was wondering the same thing :) We are going to a friend of a friends to learn how to butcher goats. We are planning on raising some and selling them, but what we don't sell we will eat.

that's incredible. love seeing all the productivity during harvest day. so much healthy non-factory meat.
So good! What a wonderful day you had. Wishing I had a plan like yours at your age. Although I do have an amazing garden in tall boxes as we are now in our mid 70's...we learned it is harder to garden in the ground as we are not as limber as we were.
I say it every time: it is great to see the N.C. Homesteading contingent working together and Grandma right as rain😁👍
Gideon is so involved!!! I love seeing how the kids have dived in for the butchering! Is there anything they absolutely refuse to do?
Yes, they are just like any other child. They don't always want to do everything.
Almost have the family (mostly the boss lady) convinced to go on this homestead adventure. Someday I hope to have little slice of heaven like you and yours.
Feel like I'm in Texas! Best line today 😄
Good one Arun!
Nope, I see your "Texas" and raise you: "so it can callagulate." CALLAGULATE!
I was thinking out loud last video or before, "those turkey are getting Big!" Now I see why, they are ready. God bless!
My favorite part is when you and Jason get in the tub together at the end lol. And Mr. Brown helping with those chickens how sweet was that!
They have the best kids. He pays them for their work but they earn everything they get and in turn it's their money to buy good things. Their money isn't even wasted. I love the work ethic he has taught them. They get up really early and do their chores too. I LOVE this family!!!
Love the drying rack!!! Great harvest guys!! God Bless you all!! Dudes in a ice bath together priceless!!! lol!

Wow Mr Brown is growing so fast 🥺 I laughed when he said papa I will do it when Justin was helping him 😂 impressive little guy
We have 30+ ducks and now have 10 chickens. Look at what you and your family did! 😁 I really appreciate the inspiration and know how you pass along.
Impressive. We've never processed more than 25 chickens in a day.

Gideon is so stinkin cute!
Yaaaassss!!! I love butchering days!!! I love the set up, and process. It's great to watch and I bet it's better to be a part of.

It's awesome to see how far your guys have come! You guys have a great system this year.
He is so cute taking the "gloves" off the chicken. I am ready to order some; where do you ship too?
That was great to see you and Mr.Brown working on that chicken together, warm's the heart. Those turkey's were awfully stressed out but idk what you would do differently
Loved Arunes saying of "I think I'm in Texas, everything is bigger in Texas!" Lol big turkeys!hope I didn't kill the spelling of his name too bad!!!😃💜
What a great crew of babies and no-longer-babies. :-)) Mr. Brown is highly entertaining. He loves his 'Poppa'.
I love to see the homesteaders helping each other
Justin I'm having my first off the land meal Sunday. I pulled 2 Cornish cross for rotisserie and I grew potatoes, carrots and salad mix all from the yard. If the watermelons we're done that would've been snack too.
Awesome Justin 👏🏻
Keep up the good work
Love MR Browns negatively butchering. Love his little voice.
Happy 48th Grandma and Big Daddy!
Mr. Brown the youngest chicken Ninja in Holler Town. Wow, what a day with a great community.
What an awesome work crew! Guidion (sorry not sure on spelling) did so awesome his first time. You all worked like crazy. Those are awesome wts on both birds for their ages. I was impressed. Looks like winter will have some terrific eating!
My day is never complete till i watch Justin Rhodes 💜

You all really did a good job 👍 and it all seemed to go without a hiccup. Everyone working so well together! That's what it's all about !
Cute little children. Very cheerful.
7/22 was my birthday. Happy anniversary grandma
Such great friends and family to come and help!
When you butcher the sheep and pigs you mentioned not wanting to stress them out before you harvest them. Does the same negative effects occur to the chickens and turkeys, or are they heartier and the stress of being caught and transported not effect them as much?
i cant wait to see how youre gunna store all your veg for year around
Baby Gideon isn't a baby anymore. He's growing up SO fast...next thing you know he's gonna remember where his shoes are and we'll all be crying
Question: why not gather them at dusk/almost dark when they are calm, put them in the trailer and cover with netting, keeping the trailer within the fencing for protection and just getting the trailer in the morning?
Oh you poor guys! I know its dinner but I remember the smell! I couldnt eat chicken for a month! Didnt stop the rest of the family lol!
I got 11 meat chickens. They are chicks now. Also 8 laying hens. 19 birds! Most Ive had ever. Not even really allowed to have any where I live. 😬😉 living on the edge! Lol
