I use to work at Petsmart. Once a month and old lady would come in and buy about 12 baskets of various canned cat foods. She said the scanner lasers would cause her heart condition to act up. Knowing I had to hand type each can individually I asked her to step aside and I would scan them. She insisted on watching me so I didn’t “rip her off” and my manager agreed with her. I think solely because she’d spend thousands of dollars. Her orders took about 8 hours to hand ring. She’d bring a little stool and wait and watch. I specifically started taking Tuesday’s off since she always came on a Tuesday.

    Talking English in America.
One time when I was visiting the USA, a guy asked me where I learned to speak English so good.
    I said, “I’m from England!”
He looked blank and then said, “Do you speak English in England?”
I was rather taken aback and responded, “England, English, the clue is in the name.”
He then figured this next bit out by himself, “so you learnt it from us then?”
I actually saw his mind blow when I told him that American got English from us, and topped it off by saying, “it is because we used to own your country.”
I then explained about the War of Independence.
Astonished he said, “Well they kept that quiet. They should have a day to celebrate it or something.”
I said, “You mean like July 4th, Independence Day?”
He in all serious said, “yes, exactly like that!”
I decided at this point that I had blown his mind enough already, and thought I’d let someone else explain about Independence Day.

We are Australian. In 1980 my little sister went to the United States as an exchange student when she was 17. The other students told her that they couldn’t believe that she spoke such good English. We were dumbfounded at the ignorance, not the kids fault, just not taught much about other countries. They did even know where Australia was.

@@karenglenn6707 funny that you say that. A lot of Americans thought I was Australian, although I have a strong English accent.
When I asked why they thought I was Australian, they told me it was because I used words like “bloody” and “mate”. 😆
My late wife Alex was American. She was a very intelligent woman, yet there were huge gaps in her world knowledge.
She came and lived with me in the UK. She was amazed at how much she learnt about the world. She absorbed that knowledge and loved it.
Many times she said to me, “they (USA) lied to us.”
She had even been taught that the first person in space had been American, not Russian.
While she was here she became quite disillusioned with the USA, which I actually felt very sad about.
In fact she went as far as renouncing her American citizenship and became a British citizen.
She even got to know about Australia, and thought it was an amazing place.
She was not one for soap operas, but she loved the Aussie ones. They were the only ones that she would watch. She particularly liked Neighbours.
She even got to love cricket. My Dad taught her all about it. She would really get excited about the Ashes.
Thanks for bringing back some good memories for me. My wife was an amazing woman.

@@TheSnowdogsShorts I am so sorry that you have lost your beautiful wife. It sounds like she became as British as you. England is our family's mother country and I want so desperately to get there before I die. We are descended from the Plantaganets on one side but the other side were paupers. Our ancestral family home is Powderham Castle in Devon and this is why I have to go there so badly. Americans are sadly not taught about other countries or their history, my sister said that when she did her final year there and graduated in Pine Island, Minnesota. The graduation was not recognised in Australia as the US standard wasn't high enough and she had to do form 6 again here. I am so glad you're lovely wife loved cricket, I started going to the Boxing Day test matches with my darling Grandpa when I was 5 at the MCG and have loved it all of my life. My son however thinks it's the most boring game (apart from golf). Which county are you from? The only thing I would have an issue with is your winter. Aussies are soft when it comes to the cold, and we all think we're gonna die when it's 0celsius. My favourite guitarist of all time is the brilliant late Steve Clark from Def Leppard, a Sheffield lad. Love Yorkshire accents. Did Alex's accent change? She must have loved you to leave her home country and family to live in Britain. I got homesick after 2 weeks in the US, where they also had trouble understanding us. Aussies are more like Poms, most of us are descended from the UK, and the language and sense of humour is the same. Your comedy shows are the best in the world, Monty Python, Red Dwarf, Open all Hours, the wonderful list goes on. At least I have brought my son up well and he has all the Dad's Army, Porridge, Open all Hours, 'ello 'ello, anything British on dvd and blu ray, he has adored them from a teenager. I apologise for being a bit all over the place, but send you much love. Your Alex sounds amazing and clearly was intelligent enough to appreciate other cultures apart from her own. xx

@@karenglenn6707 Devon is a wonderful county. I have been there several times and I adore it.
I live on the South coast in Sussex. Our winters down here are rarely harsh these day. 0 Celsius is pretty rare.
Things are a lot warmer here than they used to be. I rarely even put my heating on. It is often colder up north of course.
Australians are much loved over here.
Some of my family moved to Australia a very long time ago. There is a place in Western Australia which has our family name. It is called Burlong Pool.
If I remember correctly there is a few Aussies descended from the Plantagenets. The was a documentary several years ago that followed the original line of the monarchy, and if it had followed correctly, then at that time the rightful king of England was an Australian, a farmer I think. :)

    • @karenglenn6707
      @karenglenn6707 3 года назад +6

@@TheSnowdogsShorts I think that there are a lot of Plantaganet descendants, they bred well. I just looked at your map and Sussex is pretty close (in Aussie terms) to Devon I see. I live in Castlemaine, Victoria, an historic gold mining town about 1 1/2 hrs from Melbourne. I grew up in Melb but this is my soul home and my whole family are here now too. The weird thing is that when my son was 4 I was driving him to kinder and he said to me did I remember living here before when cars didn't look like cars and pointed out a house and said that was our house. I laughed at said we never lived here before (he was born here) and years later we found out that great great grandfather had indeed lived here and was a jeweller and did live in the street that Daniel had said, but he was one house wrong, it was the one next to it. I think that this is why we have all ended up here, and we'll all die here, there is such a strong bond for this town. Even my grandparents moved here and my grandpa never knew of the connection before he died (it was his ancestor). It is the most beautiful town if you google it. My soul just feels at peace being back here, was in Bendigo for 10 years but it was never home. Have been back for 18 months, near my wonderful family and so glad to be where I belong. Re the weather, if we get a frost, that's all everyone talks about as we're so used to the warm. I was just complaining to a friend from Edinburgh saying it was cold here today, only 20deg and she said that's a lovely for them, so I shouldn't whinge. Aussies flock to the UK because it's where we feel at home, apart from here, even though the countryside is so different, the people aren't. We're so similar in so many ways.

in Baton Rouge, LA the ambulance is paid for with taxpayer money from the Parish (County outside of Louisiana). YET, they ambulance company will ALSO sent a bill to the patient. They hope that the person billed will not know that it's already paid for and will pay them the 8k+ bill, so they will get paid TWICE for the same service.... AND since their main set of customers are old people, it usually works.
there have been lawsuits galore, but the courts have stated that they are allowed to do this as it's not an actual bill, but a request for payment with no obligation to pay it. (I guess what they are saying is that anyone can send you a request for payment for any reason, but it's up to you to know that you don't have to pay it)
So, it still goes on to this day (been over 20 years).. When my grandfather died in Feb, we got a bill from them for 12k+... my father called them up and cussed them out because of what they are doing....

A few years ago I remember reading an article discussing high school graduation requirements across the US. As I recall, forty states did not (at that time) require any courses in geography, and the same goes for civics. I can’t remember if the same states that didn’t require knowledge of their own government were the same ones that didn’t care what their students knew about what existed outside their state boundaries.
On the other hand, several decades ago I was visiting a friend and went into her kitchen. Her teen was sitting at the table with his geography homework. It appeared designed to make geography boring. It would have been a miracle if he remembered anything from that class; so different than teachers I had learned from. They made it fun and challenging.

If she was half her age at age 6, she would have been 3. Making her 3 years younger than her sister. So when her sister is 70, she is 67.

@@nathanscott4422 if you check the "List of serial killers by country" on Wikipedia you'll see that there are more than just "a few" that are not from the US (plus, keep in mind that it is the English wiki, so it will likely be biased for killers from English speaking countries and information that is available in English - even when it comes to non-english killers).

@@dalpz205 I'm seven decades old, born in Texas & hope to someday die in Texas. I remember when we had no such thing as stupid as DST, which was instigated by Prez Jimmy Carter in the 1970s, in the mistaken belief that you could actually make a blanket longer by cutting a piece off one end and sewing it onto the other. I HATE IT no matter which way it is going, biologically we live by the sun, not by a clock.

@@dalpz205 Hello, youngster, lol. I'm in the Permian Basin area so we're fairly used to occasional snow in winter, but this one was a doozy. Our small town was blessed with uninterrupted power, but a good deal of snow, wind, ice, etc that lasted too long. I have always disliked the heat & reserve the right to whine about it, so try not to complain about the cold! Felt so bad for the many who suffered, some a lot. Re DST, I'm just one who is tuned to natural time, but we all have to live with the changes, it doesn't bother my husband at all. I hope you are also doing well, perhaps we'll meet again. I LOVE this gal's vids & sense of humor!
