Absolutely perfect video. THANKS!! The job was still a struggle, but that was because Volvo apparently called these cars back and changed the rack including the pipes, so when my dealer looked it up on the VIN he got the wrong part and we had to return it. Bla bla... But the video made everything logical. I am impressed with how well you get the weird angles filmed :)
Very glad to help and thanks for sharing your experience. It isn’t easy recording while also conscious I’m taking up a lift in my friend’s busy garage but I do what I can.
Got mine done finally,I took it easy and did it in 3 times by 3-4 hours.😅Thanks for that video even though you skipped some tiny part, you still encouraged me to do it.
Just changed mine on my 2009 v70, did it myself on axle stands, not too bad to do tbh, didn't need the second jack for the engine, didn't need to take the boost hose off either. 2 things to mention though, there is supposed to be a small non return valve on the supply hose to the rack (top hose), this is about the size of a button cell battery and sits infront of the hose in the rack, it fell out when I removed the hose from the rack, I realised what it was and checked my new to me rack to be fitted and sure enough it didn't have one, so I fitted the one that fell out to the new rack before I attached the hoses. Second thing to mention is that the thread length on my new track rods were longer than the old ones so I couldn't replicate the tracking settings. Cheers for the informative video, it was a big help!
Thanks, great filming & commentary, am dreading doing this job but badly corroded pipes make it a must do, think mine's a ZF rack (on a 2004 wagon) it's universal joint isn't pretty either !
Thank you, it was such a struggle and I was rushing because I was using up a ramp in a busy workshop. I really hope it’s helped and good luck with the job!
Congratulations, I have looked for a video that explains how to do it and it is very easy, a question is what year is this Volvo, I have a Volvo S60 model 2007, I am from Mexico
replaced mine with a reconditioned rack, now I don't have enough adjustment in the tie rods :/ I fear I have wrong length inners and/or outters, I see autodoc lists many different length inner rods, but I think the measurement difference is in the length of the rack side threads so wont help my situation, my next though is shorter outer rods but its turning into a frankenstein, wish me luck brethren
Getting ready to do mine tomorrow I think it’ll be easier to do it when I see it in person, gonna suck because I don’t have a lift but should still be able to do it
@@Zoli_ExhibitPrinting it was awful, and to top it off it didn’t even fix the power steering, I’m about to see if I can switch to electric power steering
Thank you! I'm hopeful but it's hard work keeping on top of the maintenance myself. I haven't touched a car since doing this job, it's put me off for a while!
Amazing video, thank you. I just had my steering rack replaced with a refurbished unit and it isn’t 100%. The steering is little tighter/firmer when turning right but left is fine. Also only when parallel parking I hear a light knock coming from the steering. It’s been back to the mechanic and says no issues with air/bubbles and pump is also fine. He couldn’t simulate the knock but visually all looks ok. Are you able to advise what may be causing these symptoms? Thanks in advance.
Thanks Santosh, glad to help. I get similar knocks in my steering, my car seems to get through bottom ball joints pretty quickly too. I guess I’d just suggest having all the suspension components checked as well as the sub frame bushes.
Followed your video step and it’s amazing!! I need a little advice though. Any tips on getting the universal joint removed from the rack? The bolt is removed but they just won’t separate. Thank you boss
Hi Nathan, that’s very kind and I’m really glad to help! I can’t remember if I put it in the video but if you’re struggling with it you can separate the column inside the car which is much easier, that way you’ll be able to remove the bit you’re struggling with away from the car. It also may be easier to swap this part to the new rack before refitting too, sorry if that wasn’t clear in the video. Good luck!
The top one would be an easy one to start with and the gearbox mount if you don’t mind going under the car. I wouldn’t expect more than 2 hours labour for a garage to do all 5 though.
Thanks for the video!! I plan on doing this job on friday. :) The only thing I found strange is that I've got a oxygen sensor cable, aswell as two transmission cables / gear shifter cables that need to be disconnected - because they were blocking the rack from getting out. I'm guessing because your car is English (steering wheel on the right side).
I think it’s just old habits. I don’t have a workshop for every job so I just end up working as if I’m working in my own unit without a ramp and decent tools.
Wow! You made this look so easy , I’m here because I’m in the same boat but not confident to take this job on my self , Quotes at the garage are not cheap I was wondering if you would do mine if I pay you if possible? I’m in the north west Lancashire ?
Probably because I couldn’t include all the swearing and pain in the video. This isn’t an easy job. What are garages quoting out of interest? I’m in East Yorkshire but I don’t currently have a workshop I’d be able to use to take the job on for you.
It depends if you change over the inner and outer rods. It took me about 7 hours including messing around recording it and changing over the rods because they were new.
It took me approximately 7 hours to do the whole job so I’d suggest a garage that isn’t recording like I am could do it in 6 hours. So 6 hours labour plus the cost of parts I’d hope.

Glad to help. Recorded in a busy garage with one hand so I’m glad it’s been helpful at all. Took me 7 hours.
Finally a walk-through, have to do mine soon for the exact same issue
Good luck, I hope everything goes well for you!
@@IAMASPANNER thanks mate, I hope it does as it’s been nothing short of a **** since I got it haha

What will be the symptoms if this valve is refitted to the new rack?
Had the same problem with the different length of threads..

00:37 that's a nice woofer you got there
I think before lift engine must undo engine mounts first and then lift up. Thanks for video. Will do soon same thing.
Bro's from britain. Passanger side is the left side, if youre sitting in the car. I was extremely confused.
Well done and illustrated. Much appreciated.
Thanks Adrian, much appreciated!
20:45 what is the name of that bearing ? did u put a new one in ? ...if so,got a part nr ?

Did that car have a 2 pin sensor on it. Push pipe..apparently been told 2 types.
Thanks for the valuable info. Would it be an advantage to replace subframe bushings and rear engine mount while you're in there?
Yes, definitely!

Thank you for the video! How much power steering fluid did it take to fill up after replacement?
0,5-2 litres. Use the same Color. I have green. Also Look at the number on bottle
Dunno what u did but I never have to remove the universal joint inside the car
You don’t have to but it’s likely if you don’t it’ll damage the UJ and you’ll need to replace it like I did on mine a year or so later.
Thank you so much for your video!
Excellent any ideas on picking up a reconditioned rack as new prices are extortionate I m doingvto sell thanks
Only really eBay or buy a donor car that’s all I could suggest.

That was a 05+ ZF style push in rack wasnt it.
Mine is the push in type with one bolt clamping both pipes in.
I need this doing on my D5 but I don't have the kit nor the ability so it looks like a garage job and a big bill for me!

@@IAMASPANNER yep it went ok but it was a lot of work
Please do a coolant change video on a Euro 4 D5
I'll try!

If you have a rhd car and you said it’s easier to pull it out from the left side, does that mean I on lhd car it’s the opposite way?
I have a lhd. Just pulled it out yesterday on the left hand side. Very easy
It’s harder on the RHD because the dashboard covers the matrix. If you’re willing to cut the dashboard it’s as easy as the LHD.
XC70 ??
This is a big job no wonder thay charge alot
How long time would you say it take?
It depends if you change over the inner and outer rods. It took me about 7 hours including messing around recording it and changing over the rods because they were new.
Your dog make my day 🤣
She makes my day too! You should've seen her climbing down the ladder when I had to leave the car stuck on the lift overnight!
Hi. Great video.
Any idea how much this would cost to be done at a garage?
It took me approximately 7 hours to do the whole job so I’d suggest a garage that isn’t recording like I am could do it in 6 hours. So 6 hours labour plus the cost of parts I’d hope.
@@IAMASPANNER 6hrs?! Christ. Ok thank you.
Can I use your shop and lift to do mine? 😂
It’s not my shop in the video but if you offered to buy me a single phase motor for my ramp I might be tempted 😂
