I'm from Botswana, and I approve of this video :D (Botswana was never colonized but was a protectorate. That is why unlike many African countries we don't have red in our flag as we did not have to shed blood for our independence). Diamonds were discovered after we got independence. Thank God :D
@@_.-jen-._ He is not saying he is proud of it. We Batswana always say we are blessed because there were many major disaster we were spared from. I think God just selected our country and put it under his wing and said they are mine, no evil will touch them. Thats why we even sing in our national anthem that our country is a gift from God. We thank him in every way.
Botswana is a nice country. The meaning of it's flags colors are really peaceful, the blue means water needed for Botswana to exist, the black and white lines reprensenting peace and cooperation with the two races and or zebra lines. Not some red color symbolising the blood spilt for independence. And overall, Botswana is a pretty good example for other african countries in terms of a strong, and growing economy and in terms of corruption. To be honest, i was expecting Paul to mention that a civil war is or was going on in Botswana, because that's usually the case with a majority of african countries. But their wasn't a civil war and that's nice. Because most countries that had a civil war are pretty bad in terms of the strength of their economies. That's usually a thing because those countries have war economies and are only geared up for war. I'm really surprised how well Botswana's economy is doing because it's land locked. But you can ignore the fact that it's land locked because it can use the Zambeze river to get it's ships to the indian ocean. Hope the country has the 2nd largest GDP in all of Africa in the future.
Botswana has the world’s highest concentration of African Elephants, and that’s amazing. The wildlife reserves seem so cool too. Sending tons of love to Botswana from China! 🇨🇳❤️🇧🇼
By far my favourite country after my own! These people are the example for the African nations! Such an economical turnaround! Very low corruption too! Amazing!
I remember reading that the IMF (International Mother Effers) approached Botswana years ago with a 'specially tailored plan' the same one they tried to sell to every poor nation. The IMF claims these are 'customized' economic plans but Joseph Stiglitz (their turned rogue former chief) says it was basically the same plan for all countries, designed to put nations into the IMF's debt. Botswana had the only leaders anywhere that saw right through the trick and sent the IMF packing. And this is why they have been doing so well while so many other African countries have not been. Good for you, Botswana!
That is not only why Botswana is prospering, it differs a lot from the rest of Africa. Lets look at the history of Botswana, First they had a good leadership like Sechele I to defeat the attacking white Boers and later good leadership like Khama III , Sebele I and Bathoen I, the Three Dikgosi, who secured the positions of a protectorate instead of a colony under the Union of South Africa or Southern Rhodesia, bitterly due to the terrible treatment of Blacks in both countries. During it's independence Botswana was the 2nd poorest country in the World, had no single University, three missionary schools, no hospitals/clinics, had only 4KM tarred road which was made for 1947 Queens visit. The British said Botswana was going to be a charity case forever. Botswana was built by Batswana from scratch, Botswana didn't even have a capital then as the former Capital Mahikeng was annexed to Union of South Africa. 90% of primary schools, secondary schools in Botswana was built by Communities selling cattle and contributing thats why most still carry "Community school" status although now under government. Botswana was so untouched compared to its neighbouring countries that they found their minerals after it's independence which they have used to finance education with great success. It is also one of few African countries, if not the only, with nationalized minerals which some countries such as Namibia have wanted to follow after. Comparing Botswana to Africa, or its neighbouring countries like Zimbabwe, Namibia and S.A, which were colonies and where black people live under white peoples segregated communities is sad. Today Botswana has reached a GDP per capita that of Turkey. Botswanas success is that of having good leadership to make sure they kept their independence and not suffer the trauma of colonialism and neocolonialism like lots of African countries did. They could easily organise themselves and build the Botswana we see today.
Don't paint a black and white picture. The IMF has also actually helped Botswana in the early years of its independence. Difference is, Botswana fully paid back that loan, contrary to many other African countries who become permanently addicted to international money & IMF / World Bank.

Sure you can come to Botswana. As long as you are going to integrate, speak the language, be respectful to our people and be productive, of course you would be welcome :)
After the metal episode I started listening to some excellent metal bands from Botswana (Wrust is awesome!). So... Yeah, here I am watching the Botswana episode again.
Luke Anderson Wow, I had no idea that there are schools that take you this far.. The furthest school expedition we ever had was from Cyprus to Greece, UK to China sounds OP
I had read about this country awhile back and it has always been an interesting place as well you will rarely hear about it and that maybe a good thing as it has been doing pretty well for itself unlike other of its neighbors in Africa. I think I'll visit this place one day if I ever reach Africa.
I have to say I love the video, quite funny hearing you pronounce the names 'westernized'. I would just like to add a few things. White people from South Africa also tend to migrate to Botswana, if they couldn't get into Australia, because of President Jacob Zuma and all his new laws regarding race for jobs and schooling as well as the crash of the economy. Afrikaans is mostly spoken in South Africa, as it is the language of the "Boere". Botswana was under the name "Bechuanaland Protectorate". Our current President is addressed by his full title: "Lieutenant General Sir Seretse Khama Ian Khama". Corruption can only be seen whilst living in a place, trying to make a living. Other religions are: ZCC, ATR and surprisingly Buddhist (as there are many Chinese). As a Motswana it is generally easy travelling to countries without a VISA, for Botswana has many allies in trade. The National currency is "Pula" which in Setswana means "Rain". I am definitely going to subscribe, as i want to learn more about the world. :D
Hi, Paul. I was just thinking that you should mention what each country's name means more often, as the etymology of a country's name often has as much significance as its flag's colors. Anyways, it's just a thought. Keep up the good work!
Very nice summary. You've got lots of facts about everywhere, it seems. :) I've spent 10 months total in Botswana (including going back just before COVID shutdowns, to visit for the first time in 17 years!). Much of what you say is right on, to my knowledge, and some beyond mine (like two larger inland deltas in the world). Two additions: 1.) A black eye for Botswana is how they have displaced the Basarwa (a more respectful term than Bushmen) from parks/game reserves to prioritize foreign tourist income. The government won't admit to it. 2.) The country name is pronounced with a hard "o", like "boat-swana". The usual pronunciation (which you use) is spelled Batswana, which means the people of the country. Cheers.
I love this country since childwood, through documentaries about its wonderful nature. And as an adult I love it even more for being a healthy country from the same continent I was born in. An inspiration to say the least. All I need to do now, is to visit Botswana and meet its people :)
Finally you are going to Brazil! Yey! I must kind of help you since I'm a huge fan of the channel. Our flag is made of the colors of the Portuguese Bragança royal family (green) and the Austrian Habsburg (yellow) royal family after Emperor Dom Pedro of Brazil married Maria Leopoldina. The stars in the globe represent the Brazilian 26 states and the Federal District. Brazil was the only Empire in the Americans basically made of republics in the 19th century. Brazilians are made basically of white, black, indigenous and yellow immigrants. But different from other colonies the Portuguese encouraged mixture between different ethnics to make colonization easier. We have the biggest african population outside Africa, Brazil is the second biggest african populated country besides Nigeria. The biggest Japanese population outside Japan, the biggest italian population outside Italy and the 2nd biggest German population outside Germany. Our president comes from a Bulgarian heritage while our vice-president is from a Lebanese family. Many jews came to Brazil as well as many indigenous people continue to leave here, although some of them haven't had contact with non-indigenous, the "uncontacted people". Other thing you should not forget is that we are a peaceful country and our last war was the Paraguayan War back in the 1860's. The boundaries were part of a diplomatic effort made by Baron do Rio Branco with no wars. Our friend zone is with Portugal (colonization heritage), Angola (many Brazilians came from there and Brazil was the first country to recognize its independence). Other close friend is Argentina in Mercosur, although we were enemies in the 1970s because of Itaipu Dam, Chile (we were friends because Argentina was enemy of both countries) and Japan (many Nipo-brazilians). The United States was the first country to recognize Brazilian independence and Brazil went to the II World War after Pearl Harbor Attack, so I guess we are close friends too, despite of the spying issue last year. Brasilia like Washington was planned to be the capital and has the most modern architecture of the country made by Brazilian famous architect Oscar Niemeyer. I guess you have a lot of things to do. Good luck!
Filipe Mesquita there is some misinformation on your comment, firstly brazil was not the only empire on america, just the one that survived longer, and no brazil is not a peaceful country, our last significant war was world war 2, not to mention the inumerous revolts in our history. And you forgot to say that we have many regional differences and that we also have the biggest italian population outside italy and the 2nd biggest german population outside germany
When i was in Brazil (now i live in portugal) i was taught that the green meant the amazonian rainforest but i dont remember it very well tho hehe... Im brazilian and i live in portugal and i can prove how those countries have a good relationship (despite brazilians has badly stereotipized portugueses)... Felipe parabens, é raro ver-se alguem que sabe estas coisas sobre o nosso pais, todos aprendem na escola, porem so guardam o que aprendem na rua, enfim...
Tchêsco Hey Tchesco. Thanks for your comment. I must say that you misunderstood what I said. I said that Brazil: "Went to the II World War after Pearl Harbor Attack", but we are a peaceful country whatsoever. Brazil signed Briand-Kellog peaceful Act and only went to World War II because Brazilian submarines were attacked in our coast, our biggest ally (USA) was attacked and to fight the Axis. It was a collective self-defence act against Axis aggression that's why we deployed troops. Remember that Hitler first promote the war. Brazil also went to war to have an important role in the International System after the conflict that's the reason we are one of the founders of the UN. When Brazil gained its independence we were the only Empire in the Americas. England was happy with that, the US wasn't. Our independence could maintain the Royal Family unlike the other countries that became republics. That was unique! Habsburg Empire in Mexico was a foreign Invasion by a foreign king that didn't last long. You can't say Brazil is not a peaceful country at all! Internal conflicts are very normal but we didn't have a civil war like the US or Argentina we only had some small provincial or state revolts. As I said since 1860's Triple Alliance War Brazil hasn't had any wars with our neighbors. In fact, Brazil negotiated its boundaries with our 10 neighbors by diplomacy using direct negotiation or arbitration. Brazil was even part of peace negotiations with its neighbors: Brazil negotiated along with Argentina the Peace treaty after Chaco War, and after Colombia-Peru War. Brazil was part of the negotiations after Ecuador-Peru crisis (1997) as well as part of the negotiations after Ecuador-Colombia crisis (2008). I didn't forget to say those informations you wrote about since it wasn't my intention to do so, but since you talked about it, I'm happy to add then to the text. Thanks!
James Mitchell that is so ignorant, but for the sake of being nice I’ll assume that you are genuinely asking a question. There is nowhere in Botswana where those foods are eaten.

Wow, I had no idea that there are schools that take you this far..
The furthest school expedition we ever had was from Cyprus to Greece, UK to China sounds OP
Yeah our school likes to do all these trips, this expedition is 5000 euros though!

Eh, on the bright side, at least we have Name Explain for that. :)
Love for Botswana from Norway!
Very nice summary. You've got lots of facts about everywhere, it seems. :)
I've spent 10 months total in Botswana (including going back just before COVID shutdowns, to visit for the first time in 17 years!).
Cheers.
Subbed! I love geography, anthropology, and soaking up knowledge! Thanks!

Also...the Lebanese population in Brazil is larger that the actual population of Lebanon
Thanks!
