You got a lot right, however, the kilamba town, is now fully occupied. The government subsidized the properties, making it easier for the local population to obtain mortgages.
It was actually Cuban-supported, not Soviet-supported, according to the Soviet officials of the time and the Angolan government itself, the USSR only contributed around 4 transport ships while the Cuban army is widely considered the reason Angola won the Frontier War, (so, you know, 2nd time in a row the Cubans have defeated US-led forces, just saying). As a side note the Cubans insisted on the freedom of Nelson Mandela as a condition for ending the war, the Appertheid regime approved of this after the battle of Cuito Cuanavale, to avoid being defeated and probably invaded by the Cuban army, thats were Mandela's well known friendship with Castro comes from.

It's nice to see this amount of effort going into a channel with below a thousand subs, keep it up! btw I wouldn't mind seeing a video on Argentina because all I really know about them is that they went to war with the UK over the Falkland islands and they are very good at (European) football, and considering how big and strong the country is, people should probably have a rough idea on the geography of the place.

As a portuguese, working in Portugal but mostly for Angola.. I see Angola as a country with a huge potential. If they work on their levels off corruption and alow foreign tourism investments.. they could easilly become the top African country. The trade/finantial partnership with the USA is one the reasons Angola is improving so much. I hope they become the top African country and not a country like Brazil, with so much richness but also with so much corruption.
Hey good job! I've started getting interested to a lot of country related stuff at a young age and so far i'm enjoying all the new info that im getting from your videos. Keep it up.
African countries are interesting because we often don't know much about them beforehand, also it's a continent of problems. Wars, poverty, corruption, famine, more wars, ethnic tension, disease, even more wars and wars. Problems are interesting.

I used to work in Soyo Angola for Chevron. We build a LNG plant there. If you go to one of the main offices you will see a wall photo of a crane removing about a ton of dumped bombs from the previous war. These had to be removed to clear the ports for ship loading. The other problem are the land mines still everyplace. I was told that only about 10% had been removed. Most of these land mines are Russian from Cuba. There is also Tank beach just south of Soyo. There is a sunken tank on the beach. Luanda is a crowded expensive city.

It's not that expensive anymore. Angola is a great place with lovely wildlife as well. We recently came out of a war and everything was ruined so prices for everything went up but now they are okay again.

95% of economy just oil??? oh my god.... so basically a completely underdeveloped country that simply stays afloat because of this one commodity. Kinda like the whole damn middle east. Also, you know you're land is in trouble if you pay $26 for a sandwich , yet the average Angolan person makes about $2 per day..... -_-
Diego Carvalho Angolan here too, please stop talking crap, as stated the only reason is based only around oil is because of our president NEVER invest in anything else like agriculture and tourism, with that I leave the only way Angola can get by is by making sure we SELL oil.
You're thinking about Saudi Arabia. The vast majority of the Middle East exports petroleum, which is true, however many have immensely diversified their economies through tourism, software technologies and advancements in manufacturing and architecture. Not to mention the exportation of agriculture from Egypt. trendsinstitution.org/uae-economic-diversification-record/
Geo Now, the Soviets were not interested in Angola until Cuba pressed them to get involved. Cuba, which actually sent thousands of troops to Angola, had there own strategy which many times clashed with the Soviet strategy but which in the long run proved much more effective. DUDE I was SOOOO upset when I realized I pronounced it wrong. I was like "AHHH I already posted up the video and it's too late to edit!!" Haha oh well. There will always be a special oils-producing placed called "Cambinda" in my heart.
I can offord to life there I'm from Angola I very beautiful country
I just found this channel today and I'm binge watching all the videos. Keep up the good work. I'm thoroughly enjoying each video.
Fascinating! I loved it.
Thanks Dude! More coming! Stay tuned!
Great work!! You describe those countries very well, without falling into the paradigm of etno/eurocentrism most videos often tend to, so it can tell you put a lot of work into the research. Much appreciated, you should get more credit!!
Well you're in LUCK!! After I finish the next country, (Antigua and Barbuda) which I'm editing right now, ARGENTINA will be the next one! Stay tuned!
He should talk about Marginal in Luanda, one of the most beautiful places in Angola and Xyami Shopping. I was there with my family in July. Very good video👌🏾🇦🇴
Can't believe I only found this channel now, I love this sort of stuff, popped up in my recommendations. I can only assume you've gotten all the way to Z now so it shouldn't take me too long to get through it. Can't wait to get to my country (Ireland).
You should already know this now, but he's his most recent video as of now is Chile. So yeah, it'll be a while before Ireland.
Yeah, didn't notice the date on the videos when I started watching so I didn't realize it started in 2014.
I also underestimated what it takes to make these types of videos, so there's that.
This episode was really great, Paul. Seems like Angola is a pretty interesting country! Altohugh I've heard it's very hard to visit (visa regulations).
Thanks Chris S. ! I don't know how the visa thing works. I would really like to visit too though, especially the lush interior
Geography Now yes it is extremely hard to visit. However, visa requirements are changing, so soon we will be giving out tourist visa like hot cakes.
Angolan Da Cunha
Seems rather bizarre why would a nation in need of wealth prevent people from wealthy nations from visiting.
Looks like a lot of Africa is like that too. I don't get it. I travel a lot and would love to visit African Nations but they need to make it easier.
Samuel Epicurus who can visit now. They already changed it recently. You just need proof of funds and a tourist plan.
Samuel Epicurus they need to protect fron the so called turists with no interests apart from siteseeing
Some errors:
Its Cabinda not Cabi>M
Dude his using prices from restaurants and high-end shops.
Nope, he said a sandwich and was talking about regular every day stuff, He NEVER SAID that the prices were from high end shops/restaurants.
+MultiVigarista He talked about the cost in ONE CITY, not the whole country
Am from Luanda the capital and most expensive city in this country soo... what is your point ?
MultiVigarista He talked about the capital, not the entire country when he talked about prices
thank you so much, couldnt find any good facts for my essay about Angola, this really helped.
I love the videos! Keep up the good work :)

I'm brazilian, live in Brazil, and i have a lot of angolan friend. THEY ARE THE BEST GUYS IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!
I'm an Angolan, some of the findings here aren't quite accurate. But thanks for the effort, it was worth a shot. Always a patriot
Just for the record, Angola had ties with a city in China -> Macau, Macau used to be portuguese aswell (until 1999), and so Angola and Macau had, (idk if they still have, but problably yes) a good connection.
I am from Denmark, and I must say that you must have been ripped off by the place that had you pay 21 usd for a sandwich!!
haha, ikke her i Norge
probably a tourist trap in the centre of Copenhagen.
the brazil-angola friendship made me think brazil was like "i know dat colonized feel, bro"
I feel honored to be subscribed to you this early. The effort you put into these videos is amazing, and if you just keep at it like you have, you'll become big no doubt.
Thanks so much GenoClysm !! I'll remember that name. haha You're one of the Geography Now Subscriber OG's!! LOL
Pretty sure Brazil won’t be the top African country, that’s because Brazil is a country in South America.
@@mathguy37 You read what he said wrong
@@Abstract.Noir414 i think you interpreted how serious i was wrong
Hey good job! I've started getting interested to a lot of country related stuff at a young age and so far i'm enjoying all the new info that im getting from your videos. Keep it up.
If Angolas economy is completely oil based, does that mean they're experiencing a recession right now?
Yes ... A very bad one !!!
Why though?
@@sjos691 Because the price of oil drops sometimes
Thank you, I enjoyed that, very informative!
Don't Understand why I'm so interested in African countries, like Angola, Mauritania, and Libya. I also can't wait until the Tunisia video...
African countries are interesting because we often don't know much about them beforehand, also it's a continent of problems. Wars, poverty, corruption, famine, more wars, ethnic tension, disease, even more wars and wars. Problems are interesting.
+Thomas Allister People are quick to say that Africa is a shithole without researching and understanding like a bunch a dumbasses
Wow, today I wanted to know more about Angola because I am learning Kizomba and I asked myself: I wonder if Geography Now has a video about it. And it does!!! I love this channel
I'm Nigerian. i love Angola and Angolans
Wow, didn't imagine that Angola speak portuguese, this channel really show you how is the world
How does o e not know that?
My son loves your show!! thanks so much!
Saudações do Azerbaijão! Angola e o meu país não têm laços sérios. Anos atrás, pensei que este país estava na África e era um lugar muito ruim. No entanto, este não é o caso, o país é um dos 10 principais países da África. 🇦🇴❤🇦🇿
Great to watch it....
Im from Angola ✊🏾🥰
Greetings to Angola. Love from Pakistan...
🇵🇰 ❤ 🇦🇴
This is a cool channel! I'm looking forward to more of your future videos. Keep up the great work!
Love Angola from Indonesia
I'm angolan, really like the video well done talking about Angola. Learn a lot. Parabéns.
why does angola have this hugely expensive city? no one can pay for it and if I could, I'd migrate to another country
because if the rich keep on getting richer they don't give a fuck about the pour.
Sir Skeleto well said. All too common in many countries...
It's not that expensive anymore. Angola is a great place with lovely wildlife as well. We recently came out of a war and everything was ruined so prices for everything went up but now they are okay again.
Zz. .Blaise
you guys should get rid of those landmines
David Vorderman Lol, we're working on that! loads of fields in the country side have a sign saying landmine field stay out while they remove them
Nice documentary, i like it!
I am from Angola too man, thqnks for history
Angolan Flag makes me want to become a citizen just so I can fight in its military as a dual wielding mini gun operator.
This is a great show! All American children and their teachers should watch it! When are the new episodes? Looking forward to Brazil!
Hahaha its very funny how the host pronounce Portuguese words as if they were Spanish
Unfortunately our only options in school for foreign language class were Spanish, Latin and maybe French (until recently). So, many kids chose Spanish. We also think, assume Brazilians speak Spanish instead if Portuguese, it's embarrassing, but true. Infelizmente senão estuda sozinha e pesquisar, vai ficar cego e burro.
@@moniqueuu8777umm I'm pretty sure most Angolans know that Brazilians speak Portuguese
This video is so amazing, i am from Angola and I just learned things that I didnt know....keep it up geography now
Isn't it Cabinda, not "Cambinda"
These videos are awesome!
Glad you enjoyed the videos! Feel free to share them!
One of the countries in African Continent that I want to go to, oh I just wish!
Love to the good people of Angola from Lebanon/Canada
Angola was one of the 7 colonies of Portugal and its official language is Portuguese
The Speaker countries of Portuguese are... Mozambique 🇲🇿 Angola 🇦🇴 Cape Verde Guinea Bissau 🇬🇼 Equatorial Guinea Sao Tome and Principe Portugal 🇵🇹 and Brazil 🇧🇷
Sofonic countries largest country Portuguese is Brazil 🇧🇷
I'm from New York and thank you for the 😊
Wasn't Equatorial Guinea Spanish? (Dang all of that was capitalized)
THIS CHANNEL!!!! This is wonderful! Great voice, great knowledge, and just the right amount of cheese!
Lol.
Yes! Our president doesn't invest in NOTHING but oil, we ask the Chinese to build our buildings and waste so MUCH money for it to go down lol.
The Universal Army do you have a problem or what
Diego Carvalho Angolan here too, please stop talking crap, as stated the only reason is based only around oil is because of our president NEVER invest in anything else like agriculture and tourism, with that I leave the only way Angola can get by is by making sure we SELL oil.
You're thinking about Saudi Arabia. The vast majority of the Middle East exports petroleum, which is true, however many have immensely diversified their economies through tourism, software technologies and advancements in manufacturing and architecture. Not to mention the exportation of agriculture from Egypt.

This is an incredibly good channel and I'm honoured to sub to it with only 13,000 subs before it gets really popular - which will happen!
No mention of Kizomba?
Love from the United States of America to Angola! 🇺🇸❤️🇦🇴
Geo Now, the Soviets were not interested in Angola until Cuba pressed them to get involved. Cuba, which actually sent thousands of troops to Angola, had there own strategy which many times clashed with the Soviet strategy but which in the long run proved much more effective. And yes, Brazil and Angola get along really well. Brazil is investing in Angola. Angola loves Brazilian Samba. I live in Angola now as a Polish-IPortuguese translator. This country is completely different from my own, but I need to admit that Angolan people are very friendly. They really took care of me. I am happy that I have still one year o fcontract fo spend here. Obrigado Angola
Luanda has the potential to become the Berlin of Africa due to the Kuduru movement. What's the Berghain over there?
Hahaha well said. I'm Angolan, but that's the truth.
Do a video about Portugal now!!
Tá a chegar, em cerca de 2 semanas
