Hey Geoff, thanks for the overall very informative video. However, as someone from Madagascar I'd just like to ask that if you do another video about our country, or frankly any country foreign to you in the future, please take some time to learn to say the names and words correctly. I generally like to share videos about Madagascar with my family and friends from there but when the names are butchered so badly as if there's no effort in them it becomes more of a distraction from the otherwise fantastic geographical information that you're sharing. All the best.
The Eastern part of Madagascar looks very similar to the western part of India which you mentioned in the video that it broke away from. Looking at the visuals, I could see what I see around myself in Maharashtra. Lush greenery, black basaltic rocks and waterfalls all around. So beautiful!
I guess the only other group that could have plausibly came earlier were South Indian seafarers, who had the technology for it and had already sailed south to modern-day northern Mozambique on the East African coast. I guess it was just luck. Austronesians engaged in seafaring and settled in many coastal areas of the Indian Ocean. Bantu agriculturalists could not reach there until later due to migrating from very far by foot over difficult terrain. Asking why nearby hunter-gatherers on the mainland did not settle it originally is not really a question worth asking IMO (especially since it is not visible across the, it just didn't happen I guess.

the western coast of japan is significantly colder than the eastern side because of cold Siberian winds, the eastern coast however gets warm moist air from the pacific
I can finish this video like one comment due to the sun. Rising in the East it causes waters on the East sides of land to have more prosperous fishing. Get more nutrients in the water. Add due to the winds coming from the East and blowing into the West. This brings water and the mountains. Capture the water and allow it to flow down the Eastern side of the. Mountains, but the Western side is at a rain shadow, which makes it dry and not good for Widespread civilization
Interestingly the opposite of the population distribution of Taiwan, another island nation on the western border of a large continent with a subtropical climate with wetter west coast and drier east coast due to the central highlands
Hold on. So the video keeps saying there are 29 million people on the island however, when they did a people breakdown, they only covered about 3 million people. Where the other 26 million people come from if the most populated areas fail to numerically account for the majority of inhabitants??? 🤔🧐

The Navy merchants who travelled in the Indian Ocean knows what I'm talking about. Some days are rough enough to cause doubt on monstrous sized steel ships and travel in darkness of night without GPS guidance 😢. Old travelers were brave.
It is not that empty. Its density is 26 people per square kilometer or 67 people per square mile. That is similar to Brazil. Sparsely populated but not very empty. Still overpopulated.
😮I had no idea Madagascar is so awesome , I have to visit
Basically, this island is the farthest west Austronesians can reach.
I believe some reached and traded with Swahili Coast kingdoms too, although the number might be very small and quickly absorbed by the wider Black-Arab society.
And unfortunately the poorest and most economically unstable as well. Sad, given how well off the island is, resource wise and climatically wise as well.
@@TSideWes805 Thankfully politically it is getting settled after decades of coup and bickering.
The Austronesians in Madagascar are of majority African ancestry in their paternal lines
@@jasonhaven7170 It shows that the initial African arrivals were mostly males, probably workers and not for peopling purpose.
The first Asian settlers were mostly women and few men, it shows that the Asian paternal side was an elitist/sovereign lineage that fathered most Malagasy's Asian paternal genetics.
Oh mate, these days, who measures rainfall in inches without even giving a millimetre equivalent in screen?
App made it the USA, on USA's internet. Now you see how we feel when people make videos on the US and measure everything in metric. It just doesn't compute...
@@Gribbo9999 We will not use your weird system. Inches only.
Oh boo hoo
Do the math
A~free~car & Mad~A~gas~car auto~matic thumbs up from me.
I just perused your map store. Why do the relief maps have dates from so long ago? Isn't current data easy to acquire? Or did you wholesale some old maps?
This man is much much much better at 1.5x speed. If he bores you, please try it. The heavy repetition means that information sticks better at that speed.
Used to work there. Miss the island so much.
I think simple answer mountains and climate
Somebody gets is....Finally.
You said it is the 4th largest island in the world several times without actually saying how big it is. For example how many square miles is Madagascar?
Great information!
0:15 that’s probably because they’re very antisocial 😅😅😅😅
Any map of rain will show you the west is dry and the east gets a ton of rain. Like 3 to 5 times as much in some areas
I hit like and subscribe button exactly at the point he said 😅 he actually reminded me on that ..then explanations went on after
Why do people live here and not there? It’s water or mountains isn’t it?
Greetings to my friend Bernard, who lives there sometimes.
Quite informative 👍
Madagascar is an continent island by itself
Exactly what I've always thought
Dayak tribe (Indonesia) move to Madagaskar island
I wanna visit this place so bad 🙌🏾 my ancestors calling me. I’m drawn to the whole country but more so the Northern and Eastern parts, looks more developed.
But Mahajanga and down to Toliara are some cities on the western side that seem to be more popular settlements.
Please come visit !
@@micai.j8920 if ever you wanna come. Let me know. It would be a pleasure to bring you around
@@gloriagreen1269 Thank you!, That’ll be great. Where else could I find you ?, I’m learning and planning. Learning Malagasy on my free times, Having a teacher would be nice lol
great videos, i would just ditch the super-upbeat-commercial library music in the background. something slower or with less/out drums would be less distracting. thanks Geoff!
Nice Video ⭐️
Now we need a Pirates of Madagascar movie
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey Geoff, thanks for the overall very informative video. However, as someone from Madagascar I'd just like to ask that if you do another video about our country, or frankly any country foreign to you in the future, please take some time to learn to say the names and words correctly. I generally like to share videos about Madagascar with my family and friends from there but when the names are butchered so badly as if there's no effort in them it becomes more of a distraction from the otherwise fantastic geographical information that you're sharing.
All the best.
Thank you for talking about my country!
Fun fact, we are among the most peaceful countries in Africa second only to Mauritius.
I am one of the descendants of the tribe that populized madagascar from borneo so this is a great watch
Most Malagasies are the descendants of that Bornean tribe.
How were these early maps created? We see an aerial view, but how did they know it looks like that, was the coastline fully surveyed in 1590?
You probably got it wrong, the center plateau counts for around a half of the country's population.
TLTW: people on Madagascar aren't Africans, they're Melanesians (nation is called malagasy) and they have arrived from Indian ocean on boats.
short answer. Look at from space and see where the green bits are
Another Home Run, Geoff!
Singapore has a similar demographic pattern as well where the majority of the population lives on the other side of the island, away from Malaysia.
Do you have maps for everywhere...such as tidal in Guatemala
Do a video about the geography of algeria
Wesh!!!! 🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿
12:50 Thank you Uncharted 4 for making me aware of this 😅
The Eastern part of Madagascar looks very similar to the western part of India which you mentioned in the video that it broke away from.
Looking at the visuals, I could see what I see around myself in Maharashtra. Lush greenery, black basaltic rocks and waterfalls all around. So beautiful!
“Domesticated animals like chickens and bananas”?
He meant organisms
I lived there for a year. Great country, air quality in Antananarivo is piss poor, gorgeous island.
Insane that the first on Madagascar were Austronesians
Unique means there is only one. Something is either unique or it is not. It can’t be “very unique” or “pretty unique”.
Yes, but if a unique trait really stands out as a defining quality or trait of a thing, then you can emphasize it with the word "very." Everyone has a unique fingerprint, but if your fingerprint appears to produce an image of Jesus Christ, that is very unique.
Madagascar is unique......culturally and nature wise.......a place one must visit .....
Bro sounds like an AI came to life
The "r" is silent. Sounds like Masagasca
I would find it difficult to pronounce correctly the many cities of Madagascar
Antananananananananananananananana
Cyclones are Madagascar nightmares

Video footage is too sharp. You should lower the settings. 😊
Maybe because of the pinguins ?
I think japan also doesnt live majority towards china side
the western coast of japan is significantly colder than the eastern side because of cold Siberian winds, the eastern coast however gets warm moist air from the pacific
The pacific facing side also has better harbors
Mountains…. The answer is mountains.
The empire of king julian
