My vision after PRK eye surgery: 2-month update | Elora Jean

  • HERE'S THE SUMMARY:
    I underwent PRK surgery on June 22, 2018. My vision is doing great! My eyes are sensitive if I touch them too hard, so removing makeup is a more gentle process than it usually is for me. Otherwise, I feel like I can see very well. I would be happy if my vision stayed at where it is. I no longer use the steroid drops, but continue using the refreshing eye drops to maintain moisture and prevent friction against my cornea from blinking. I will continue to update!
    Let me know if you have questions :)

    I’m so glad the surgery worked out well for you. I believe our military should not have to pay for laser eye surgery. I’m happy to have my tax dollars pay for that. It is the least we can do to show our gratitude for keeping us safe in whatever capacity.
    I also had PRK in June of 2018 and it was the best thing I’ve ever spent money ($5,000) on. My uncorrected vision was -7.50 in both eyes. So I was definitely considered legally blind. Now I am 20/15 which is slightly better than 20/20. I couldn’t be more happy.
    God bless you and keep you safe.

      Damn, I have -5.5 in each eye, which is really bad, but -7.5, wow. I'm enlisting soon, and definitely want to get this done so I was curious how effective it would be with my -5.5 eyes. To hear you went from -7.5 and now are seeing 20/15. That makes me so incredibly excited, and I would absolutely pay $5000 to fix my eyes, but if the military could pay for it, that would probably be the best thing to ever happen to me. Just the thought of not having to wear glasses or deal with contacts again fills me with joy.

      @Angelica Gonzalez haha I am here because of LASIK flap complications in one eye. Flap kept wrinkling in the middle. "Refloating" it and stretching it back into place didn't work, so I basically got a mini-PRK (epithelial removal of the wrinkly area) yesterday and want to get a general sense of the recovery. My vision was cloudy before because of the wrinkles, but it's even worse now because of the removal...which is kinda scary after the quick clearing up you get with LASIK haha.
      The other eye that healed just fine is about 20/20-20/15 (they told me 20/15 today, but I feel like I still have to make more of an effort to read the 20/15 line).

  • @ComputerGeekOnTwoWheels
    @ComputerGeekOnTwoWheels 4 года назад +2

    Yeah, I have question: If your prescription was only -2.5, why would you choose PRK? Did you have very thin corneas? I had very bad LASIK experience as my eye got horrible dry due to the procedure severing vital autonomic nerves on the cornea, yes there are important nerves on the cornea, that no longer function to keep my eyes moist especially in dry environments. I don't see PRK being any safer procedure that can preserve these vital nerves. Ask yourself before considering any laser eye surgery: Why don't LASIK and PRK surgeons get the procedure done on themselves?

    • @AS-tt8ui
      @AS-tt8ui 4 года назад

      With PRK no flap created so no nerves cut. Same end result. People pick LASIK because they just can't wait for the result. I had PRK, no dry eye problems, no flap or early cataracts to worry about. It probably was more painful and had longer recovery but that was ok with me.

    • @ComputerGeekOnTwoWheels
      @ComputerGeekOnTwoWheels 4 года назад

      @@AS-tt8ui Hmmm, I picked LASIK because it was suppose to be cutting edge, newer than PRK, with custom Wavefront technology and laser cut flap. No one told me about essential nerves being cut and can cause Dry Eye Syndrome. Count your blessings that you don't have permanent nerve damage with your PRK procedure, but be aware that even though the fringes of the nerves are cut in the PRK procedure, Dry Eye Syndrome still happens with PRK: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5702539/

If you do aviation or special-duty of some kind then they might say no to LASIK. Contact your recruiter and ask for the regs/AFI so you can read it for yourself as things have change a lot overall for us. Talk to other branches just Incase they have other rules as the AF can be very selective in the pilot program.

      First you need to be officer rank meaning you need a 4 year degree and then you need to pass a series of test. Most that want to become pilots typically do no reach their goals. Too many applicants vs spots available. Also lots of test and hoops to jump thru. It's not easy for airmen to end up being pilots. Plus when I was in the air force airmen and officers do not socialize... Or it is highly discouraged

      army's program is alot less competitive .. you could even do it enlisted with enough time. (warrant officer path). it may not be fixed wing but its still a pilot job... they usually would recommend prk for pilots but the army has very low requirements for vision. most of the people i work with have lasik (not aviation). some pilots even have glasses (from what i've seen). if you talk to a recruiter, take what they say with a grain of salt, they just want you to sign a contract. (quotas) and don't enlist, unless you like being treated like a child and being forced to do stupid shit. go officer route.

      You do have to wait until after boot camp, and I think you have to be a certain age as well. I went to the eye doctor just to update my prescription, and noticed on the appointment slip I filled out there was an option that said "interested in PRK or LASIK," something along those lines. I circled that, and went from there. I had to schedule a few more appointments to do more tests, then had to get paperwork signed, but there's really no waiver. It's just a matter of getting approval from your commander.

    • @SheilaSeahJakobsenHansen
      @SheilaSeahJakobsenHansen 2 года назад +1

      I had LASIK done 11 years ago with -7 and -6.5 vision. Both eyes regressed slightly to -2.5 and -1. It wasn’t as bad as before LASIK, but it wasn’t good enough for me either, so I wanted to do LASIK again.
      However, my cornea was too thin this time, so I was recommended LASEK instead. Similar to PRK, but the cornea epithelial gets put back in place instead of getting discarded.
      I went ahead with it 11 days ago, and I am experiencing all the things mentioned in the video about the blurred and double vision. Reading is just really difficult, and it helps for a while with strong reading glasses (I change between +1.5 and +2.5). I really hope I can read normally again soon because I also work at a desk job, and I start at a new job in 3 days 😬.
      I can’t say yet if it was worth it because of the really long healing time (LASIK was so much better on that front!), but if you go ahead with PRK, don’t expect the same immediate results and painless post-op healing like with LASIK.

      Hmmm I don't remember, I know I couldn't get my eyes wet for like the first week but I'd be cautious even longer than that to swim because of the chemicals and bacteria in the water lol. Definitely a good question for a doctor.

    Hey,
    Thanks for the videos.
    I’m in the police and getting PRK because it was recommended in case of impact to the eye during my work. Just wondering, how is your prescription now? I’ve been told my the clinic to expect 20/20 ... I feel like that might be a sales pitch though. Anyhow will be getting it done in 2 weeks and good insight to it from your videos

      My vision feels perfect! I'm so happy I decided to go through with the procedure because my eyesight is wonderful now. I'm not sure what my prescription is specifically but I can definitely tell you I have no complaints when it comes to how well I can see. The only thing I've really noticed is that my eyes are much dryer when I wake up or spend too much time in front of a screen, or have my heater blasting in the car lol. That's nothing I can't fix with some eye drops though. I would definitely recommend it and say it's worth it.

      How is your vision today? I got my PRK a week ago from today and this blurry vision is KILLING me. I was a -6 and yes my sight is better than it was, i can actually wake up at night and see around me. but i still cannot see very far and this blurry is giving me headaches... i had no choice but to do the PRK. i am afraid that i will still be wearing glasses and contacts after this... that my sight might never be VERY GOOD.
