    I personally knew Penny and her husband for many, many wonderful years, up to their untimely passing. She was wonderful. Because of her, I met a lot of the Star Trek actors on the Paramount Studio Lot..I worked there myself for 12 years. I dearly miss her kindness, personality and humor. Penny also took care of cats and kittens, rescuing and medically caring for them, finding them homes. Rest In Peace my friend.

    The Excelsior seen here was not the original model used in ST3. That ILM built 6 foot model was reused several times on TNG. They decided to redress the Excelsior as the Ent-B for Generations in which it was to be damaged in the Nexus. Since they didn't want to damage the model itself, they slap on some add-ons to the hull that were designed for that. However, when it eventually came to removing them, it suffered significant damage. Enough that they decided leave them on rather than risk further damaging it. When Voyager called for the Excelsior to appear in a episode, they built that smaller 4 foot model. Two noteable difference was that the smaller model lacked the blueish hull lighting and the blue glow on the warp nacelles were more pronounced. The original ILM model made it last appearance as the USS Lakota on DS9. It was eventually auctioned off in 2006 as the Lakota to a private collector.

    While CGI has made it possible to get scene that would either be impossible or to expensive with models I feel we have lost something. While shows like Babylon Five and the Expanse has kept their CGI ships looking possible some shows have went way out wacky with their designs. It breaks my suspension of beliefs. They don't look or have the feel of being possible.
    I admit I am prejudice since I enjoy building models and have done "kit bashing" in the past. (One has parts of Star Trek, the Falcon from star-wars, third stage from the Saturn V, a spacesuit backpack and a couple items I can't recall where they came from) The model makers were creative in their builds. Its fun to go over those models and identify where parts come from. An air filter from a 56 Chevy, the tank tread, a V2 tail fin, a dog collar, a muffin tray. And if you build a model finishing it and holding it in your hands and moving it around near your eyes as if you were the camera and pretending it was actually flying through space.... Er ah I mean I've heard that is what some modelers do.

    • @GenGamesUniverse
      @GenGamesUniverse 3 года назад

      @@definitely_notme4112 At the time, yes, they were going to actually reuse the Enterprise D "Galaxy Class" ship for the newer Enterprise E ala how the Enterprise was rechristened the "USS Enterprise A" after the original NCC-1701 was destroyed by self destruct sequence, but that was nixed when the creators drew in a newer design which would become the "Sovereign Class" USS Enterprise E (which also had I believe two versions, one for First Contact which was the V1 NCC-1701-E and the other two for Star Trek Insurrection and Star Trek Nemesis which had a darker tone of paint and different coloured lights used inside the ship)

    • @definitely_notme4112
      @definitely_notme4112 3 года назад

      @@GenGamesUniverse well, mostly yes except they always planned to make a new ship design for First Contact, or else they wouldn’t have destroyed the D in the first place. They destroyed it because the D was not very filming friendly due to how top heavy it was, so they decided to destroy it in First Contact and build a filming friendly design for the E. The E was painted on for the reason i stated before.

      What was the reason for selling it all? Just consuming too much space? Studio hard up for money?

    • @SocialSpit
      @SocialSpit 3 года назад

      MSH68 I’ve never heard any reason, I think maybe partially they just wanted to get rid of it, it was taking up several warehouses of space, or it may have simply been greed and a question of how much money they could make from it all. Well, they did make a considerable amount of money, much more than they ever expected. They didn’t realize that the richest people in the world would want to buy a piece of Star Trek, and they all showed up for the auction. I think the item that was sold for the lowest amount of money was for $300, part of the make up for “Tosk”, from the deep space nine episode “captive pursuit”, and the girl who bought it couldn’t believe that she was lucky enough to get it. And if she represented The poorest person who participated in the auction, then there must have been considerable excitement over the items that sold for more. I remember they had several versions of the USS reliant from the wrath of Khan, in various stages of being blown up. I don’t remember exactly how much those models went for, but it must have been a few hundred thousand dollars each. I will have to do some research to see if the same person but most of those.
      I think it was partially because most of those props were not needed anymore as a lot of them were ships, and they use CGI for ships these days. You could see the beginnings of this practice toward the end of deep space nine and definitely in the middle of Voyager. Deep space nine was the last trek show where they made considerable ships to be shot with practical filming techniques, Voyager used a few but mostly CGI, and enterprise used mostly CGI and that was where CGI started coming into its adulthood so to speak, because you really couldn’t tell anymore. At the time that the auction was happening, I remember reading several articles about the event I think it was also that paramount wanted to offer these Star Trek props to the fans and they were hoping that more fans would participate in it. So I think at least initially that was the motivation, they wanted to put some of these props into the fans hands. If you are familiar with “Star Trek continues“, they actually use a couple of the original props from the original show from the 60’s- including the original Galileo shuttle craft which is in Houston somewhere. A lot of the people that bought these things set them up in museums and show places. Sometimes they even created little spaceships of their own where they could put on picards uniform and sit in his chair. I believe his chair may have been one of the last things sold but I am not sure about that, I had also heard that the chair was totally destroyed after Star Trek generations... I am going to have to research some of the stuff to see if I can confirm the reason for the auction in the first place and some of the people who bought a lot of the props... but it was Penny who kept everything organized, she only passed away a couple of years ago, I can imagine how she felt after they sold everything that she was responsible for.

    • @SocialSpit
      @SocialSpit 3 года назад

      MSH68 actually now that I think about it, in 1993 I participated in a creation Star Trek convention where I got to hear Picard, he was talking about becoming Locutus again, of course he was talking about reprising the role for the pilot episode of deep space nine, but he had to rub it in: “Locutis is back“ - I had bought some postcards and what not so I could get him to sign but he had to leave and he could not sign autographs that day. But they had a small auction after he appeared. Where they offered just some small gadgets from the show. And I will tell you something, Star Trek fans don’t know how to participate in auctions. The idea of an option is that you want to actually obtain the thing that they are offering and you want to get it for a good price. Well there were people making bids and they were increasing the bid from like a $1 to like $20. That’s not quite how it works, I have been to real auctions. If the current bid is $500 then the next person will bring that up to about $510. Occasionally there will be some person who really wants the object, they will make a bold bid, so they will bid $550. When the bidding gets up into the thousands, it’s still follows the same format until somebody who really wants something will offer what they think everybody else either cannot afford or would not be willing to bid against. But the Star Trek fans an item goes out on the floor for a dollar and then the next bid was 20 and then 50 and then 100... and these were items not really worth more than like $10 at most. But it is hard to say what these things are actually worth, they obviously represented a certain amount of time put in by the prop maker, and then there was somebody who painted it, somebody who put a lot of detail into it.
      What blew my mind was a voyager episode where they visit “Jupiter Station“ which was where the doctors hologram was created, it was basically three regular trashcan lids, they drilled holes and put lights into them and then kind of painted it silver so it looked metallic. It’s amazing what some of these props were made out of... hummingbird feeder‘s, occasionally you would see one of those RadioShack dual stereo microphones that you could buy for about $6 bucks. They used that in “the ensigns of command”, where the girl is trying to diagnose data after Goshaven electrocutes him. You see I recognized that thing because the singer in my band had one of those and he would use it to record us live haha. But the point is a lot of these things that look like high Tech gadgets are actually something extremely mundane. You just drill holes in them and run some LED lights into them and they became a 24th century gadget 😂😂

    There were only 3 models of the Ent-D used in TNG. The original ILM 6 foot model and a 2 foot one for distance shoots. They retired the 6 foot model around the 3rd or 4th season because of the size difficulties of shooting it and built a smaller 4 foot one with surface indentations where you can better see the Aztec skin and other details more clearly. The 6 foot model was later reused refurbished for Generations.
