  • The festive Interpro action is all on the menu for Will Slattery and Luke Fitzgerald for the final Left Wing of 2024. The team give their verdicts on Munster's Jack Crowley decision, Leinster's defence ahead of the Champions Cup, and on a surprisingly strong performance for Ulster in their victory over Connacht.

Good stuff. I think when rudd is on you need someone else on as well like cain tracey to counter his bias but yourself and fitz are great. Keep up the good work lads. Happy new year 🎊

I remember in the Dan Carter era when New Zealand seemed to get away with obvious infringements. It was hard to tell if it was bias from the ref or skill/timing from the players. Probably the latter. Reminds me of Leinster these days.

James McNabney looks like he might be one to get a cap at some point. Very strong carrier.

There was rub of the green both ways. Jimmy O’Brien taken out in the air with no attempt to catch the ball by Billy Burns, as clear a penalty as you will see. How many scrum penalties against Munster but not even a word from the ref. Leinster rightly penalised for swinging around rucks but Munster do it, nothing given. They did get away with a yellow card leading up to Aherne’s try. Everyone is now watching Leinster with a microscope partly due to Hanson’s rant. Having said all that their discipline will have to improve through the season if they are to have any success.

Great listen as usual, but I’d like to make a point on the discussion on the prop substitution. I agree this is not in line with the spirit of the game. But to me it’s just the latest iteration away from what I believe to be the real spirit which is that we should expect all players tomorrow play the full game. Of course it is reasonable in principle to allow injury substitutions but that eventually led to allowing tactical substitutions (because it was too difficult to police whether players were genuinely injured), then to an increase in the number of substitutes. So the game has reached the position where, if a team is prepared to take the risk, it can go 7-1. Hence you have ever bigger players who need only to play half the game; and more injuries. The Boyle/Porter switch to me is only a slight move on from that. If the authorities had the appetite to police whether such a substitution was a true injury they could do the same for other positions and wind the clock back to a ‘substitutes for injuries only’ framework

Rub of the green? Leinster were just way better. It’s as simple as that.

La Rochelle probably the only pack in the comp that can topple Leinster, Toulouse are great but their pack isn’t actually that fearsome at all. That game in two weeks will tell a lot.

LaRochelle is very weak these days. MHR pack just destroyed the LaRochelle pack last week. As for Toulouse agree on the scrum but progressing in the center with Meafou, Flament, Mauvaka etc is top in Europe these days

@ It sounds obvious but everything good through Toulouse comes through DuPont. He is Toulouse, if he gets injured then they’re probably the 4th or 5th best side in the top 14.

I feel like Leinster games are being scrutinised so much. Unfairly. Nobody mentioning other games. Like Crowley jumping leading with feet in the air hitting Kok in the shoulder neck area. Things happen in every game and we could all pick something out of games.

Everyone is concerned about developing young / inexperienced props. In fairness, I think Leinster might have cracked it.
Expose a young prop for the first 20mins, if they go well, keep them on if it's not going well they come off.
But the great point is, if the replacement prop gets injured, they can come back on to ensure the scrum does not go uncontested and continue to get expose to top level rugby.
Although potentially a loop hole, the reality is, it's a great opportunity to safely develop the young / inexperienced props and get them proper game time

The munster off side defensive line was outrageous at times.
The ryan ruck. There are tackled forwards popping the ball up out of the ruck in every game. Munster players should have targeted ryan and the ball and won a peno or a turnover. If the ball was on the ground before the pop, then peno otherwise play on... and accept it looks odd but fine imo. (Unless i missed a ball on the ground or a munster jackle

Is Luke Fitzgerald dumb? In all honesty? Harry Byrne turned down the chance to play for Connacht. Maybe he doesn't want to be moved up or down the road. He's a human being. Not a chair. These podcasts (admittedly free) are hard to listen to when Fitzgerald is either stupid or stubborn. But neither are welcome on your show.

3:00 so Jimmy o'brien gets yellow carded for a collision in the air going for a fair ball, against mack hansen. Jimmy O'brien gets taken out of the air by a munster player and not even a penalty. How donyou figure that 1?
Munster were slowing the ruck down, jumping over the ruck, offside, slow from coming back from offside l, blocking the passing paths.
BUT yea, Leinster got the rub of the green.
The reffing in the URC is absolutely sh!te and not just the reffing the linos and TMOs too.

Jimmy was going for a fair ball but unfortunately for him he was late and made contact in the air against Hansen. That is quite literally the definition of a card in the modern game.

On your last point. It's a 3 month loan to replace an injured player. Connact or Ulster wouldn't be offering a 3 month loan. You're comparing apples and Nike Airs, nevermind apples and oranges

I agree Crowley should have been able to play against Munster given that he did not play much in the Autumn. However this is part of a more general issue with minutes management which needs revision imo. The most egregious example is Timoney who, were told, had to miss a match despite not playing a single minute in the Autumn Internationals
