I love this video. I used your technique to dig the gravel out before busting out concrete when I did my basement bath on my channel. I had to move an existing drain.

I like this video, the only suggestion I would have is that a lot of novices like myself watch these videos to see if we could tackle the job ourselves, however about half way through the video it started to sound more like two guys with experience talking to each other, and leaving the audience out of the equation. However, I do like your videos in general so don't take what I say too personally, and keep up the good work.
Yes, some commentary might be nice, but the unseen unheard part is the labyrinth of the building/plumbing codes. That discussion would have take up a lot of time. When you're messing with main drains, unless you're moving something only a few inches, it's better to have someone knowledgeable, otherwise you could end up with drain problems in other parts of the house and worse, perhaps, discover sewer gas invading your home after you've grouted the tile on your new bathroom remodel.

This is a pretty nifty project because where the biggest confusion comes in play is you have a resilient laundry sink with all of the rough in copper piping in place. If i hired you for adding a walk in shower for the 1st storey washroom in my home it would be pretty easy task on hand because you just add a rough in light duty sewer line to the main sewer line that goes towards our man hole then you add the hot and cold water copper pipes with all the other jazz involved.

The plumber connected the new toilet line to the main, and the new line for venting is what I think happened. The plumber used his handy connectors to simplify the job. Jeff already had venting planned,and the water supply lines were there already from the utility sink. It was interesting to see the footing and how easy is to break the cement floor ( I expected hammer-drill to be used)

I had a house built about 15 years ago with a roughed in full bath. I'm finally getting around to the process of finishing my basement. I always had a design in mind. My question is can I tap into the drain for the bathroom sink or tub for a bar sink drain?

I used to be in charge of service and problem solving for a large firm and found that most problems were communication related. Now I think through every process into the next one and make sure I am saving time and money.

I am just wondering if i would pass sa inspection if i am gonna use 3" fittings drain will be burried in the basement floor and would use the 3" to 1 1/2" to connect the shower drain and washroom sink. You may be able to get the plans from when your house was built from city hall.
So I'm wanting to remodel my basement into an apartment/ man cave. All of the plumbing for the house is ran directly below the subfloor & floor joists. What options do I have to tie into the old plumbing for the basement or will I have to get its own septic installed?

I found this explanation a little more confusing than your other videos. When I was having my house built I had the builder rough in all the walls for the basement including a small bathroom that was going to house a toilet, sink and 48" x 34" +??? shower. The drains for the toilet, sink and shower were all roughed in and covered with concrete except for the opening over the toilet drain and the shower drain where the concrete was kept very thin, sort of dished out. As for air ventilation there might be for the sink but I am not sure anything was put in for the shower or toilet. I take it these will have to be added unless there is a line that connects to the sink ventilation line. I am a bit confused about the order in which things are done. Once you have the lines in and the concrete poured do you then tile the floor, except for the drain holes or do you install the shower base right on the concrete (that doesn't make sense to me because the bottom/sides of the shower base would be lower than the tile floor rather than sitting on top of it. The same thing for the the toilet and the pedestal for the sink.). Also, when does the drywall go in. I am concerned about the shower space, which is 48" from the stud on one wall to the face of the stud on the other wall. The shower unit I intend to use is from MAXX and it is exactly 48" wide with a depth of 34" (if I could get one with a depth of 48" I would do so). The product is completely molded in fibreglas with a gel coat finish. The base only goes up part of the way, high enough to accommodate a built-in seat. Then a second stage sits on top of that, running flush with the walls on three sides all the way to the top of the shower enclosure, I'm guessing 6'-6" in height, leaving about a foot to the bottom of the floor joists above the upper sides of the shower enclosure. The face of the shower has a two-part glass door with on part fixed and the other acting as the door which swings open. I'm not sure how the unit would be finished above the shower stall to properly cover the studs and the ceiling. I'm also assuming that the plumbing, ie. the pipes, are not installed until the shower unit has been installed.. Yes? No? Maybe? William (Gatineau).

II need to move a vent pipe that I believe is copper. It is in the middle of the half wall I am removing to make the master bath bigger. Could a DIY do this or should a plumber be called in? Only need to move it 6 -8 inches to the other wall.
Hey, quick question on this. I have an old cast iron main pipe which comes up in my basement where all the drains run into. If I want to install a new bathroom in the basement can I chip around that pipe and connect into it? Do you guys recommend any plumber in Ottawa?

I busted concrete out of my basement for a French drain Saturday and it’s like granite. I got halfway done and was so tired I gave up. Wanted to finish yesterday but was so ragged out I’ll do it another weekend. Thinking about renting a small Jack hammer to finish.
How do you know how high to mount the toilet flange before you pour the concrete? I guess it just sits flush with the future floor so when you pour the concrete it sets into the screws that are already in the flange? I have to do similar work, added that I had to drop the main drain down as it's sitting on top of the floor now so I'll have to excavate below my main drain and into the yard a bit to tie in to the existing 3inch (4?) cast iron to the septic.

When you break up a basement flooring to relocate piping, how does a guy replace the damaged poly under the concrete/on top of the rock? Is it necessary? Does breaking the poly possibly introduce radon gas into that area? (is there is radon in your area)....reason being after jackhammering the concrete out, the poly is basically torn to shreds. Almost impossible to tie a new piece into the existing plastic. thx

Do you need to break concrete for a wall mounted toilet in a basement?
This one was very timely for me. Just had plumber in last week to quote us on roughing in bathtub in the basement instead of shower. Basement bath is already roughed in for shower, toilet 4" and vent lines for vanity. Of course, I was thinking shower is fine. But I have 3 daughters so, I was overruled on this one, you know women/girls like tubs. :-) Glad you showed the process and described what you were doing. Thanks!
Sometimes just seeing a process gives you the understanding to get good value. I never have a problem paying for good work , I just hate getting scammed.
I could not agree more. That's why I watch your videos. Understanding the process and being able to talk through the work required is advantageous to not getting scammed or getting more done than you actually need. Earlier in the process I had one "guy" tell me I needed a new pit and the cost was substantial, the new pit may have been true based on where my wife "wanted" the bathroom. But understanding where the builders designed/roughed in the bath makes things far simpler. So, I just modified my layout plan. No sense making things more complicated than they need to be.

only found your channel coming from someone that is totally clueless about construction your videos well detailed and easy to follow amazing job .quick question just moved into new hous but house is old all walls are concrete getting draughts from skirting board where wooden floors meet skirting board can i get walls insulated with foam spray or should i get floors taken up and refilld with concrete and refloored three air vents at front of house for airflow for joists many thanks from ireland.
Unfortunately Gareth that style of construction is a little foreign to me but you should know concrete is a lousy insulator. I would use spray or batt to insulate
Jeff I did a similar job when I built a second bathroom in the basement of my home. My concrete floor was 4 inches thick making the job much harder. No way could I easily break the concrete as you were doing. Based on the plumbers advise I build the shower base up by 2 inches, broke a small hole in the floor for the trap, ran the shower drain to the main sewer drain underneath the toilet. The toilet, sink and shower work great but it was a lot of work.

Dont you have to start your plumbing 5' from the drain vertical pipe ? so as to not create suction of the ptrap within 5 ' when water falls down . Where is the backwater valve to prevent sewage problems ?

Saniflo is definitely worth investigating , however in small spaces it is sometime s better to open the floor and tuck it all in there.
Home RenoVision DIY - have a 600 sq ft basement that’s unfinished right now. Hence my thoughts of using a saniflo vs putting everything underground.

Very important to know what you want as a contractor, this way the trades deliver everything just as you need it and you don't run into little problems later on.

I recommend using saniflo. It is a small waste water pump with no pit that can redirect across the whole basement.
my cellar bath cant connect with gravity, so a waste pump is necessary. What are your thoughts on raising shower versus destroying concrete tiled floor for shower P trap. I kinda like those European traps, lol. My sink and toilet are all ready to connect. You are the best.
Check into the saniflo products. They have a few products that can solve your problem without demo and just a few hundred bucks.
I like to use pvc abs melts to easily.

I broke my concrete slab to get to the main drain. The drain is about 15 inches deep under the slab. But as soon as I dig in the gravel more than 12 inches, there is water flooding. How will the plumber be able to add fittings to the main drain with all that water?

How do you break the concrete if you do not know where the lines are? Carefully, I would imagine.
Hi there, I own a 60+ year old home. I want to finish the basement, but I have a huge, low hanging master support for the floor level above right across the entire middle of the basement ceiling, which would cause a head banger once the sub-floor/ceilings are installed. I was wondering if I could get a custom beam installed, and remove the old set up, to allow me to make the grand room in the basement bigger, reducing the low support?
Yes you can install the beam into the floor joist package. Get an engineer to draw up the plan. You will need to open the floor for 2 footings and presto new ceiling.

Can an island sink be vented with Air Admittance Valves (AAVs) in Ontario? Can the aav be under the sink as high as possible? My island is about 2 feet away from the storage room, so should I do a loop vent with the aav valve in the storage room above the sink flood level?

At 7:19 .... I've never seen this done ... just for clarification ... you inserted Tapcons into the holes of the flange and when you pour the concrete the result is your flange will be attached to the concrete as if you screwed them into dried concrete? Seems risky though ... shouldn't a flange be installed on a finished floor ?
It will work just fine. The flange is set to the existing pad level, so when it's poured it will be exactly as if it was installed after the pour.

Hi im not a plumber but im running drain lines underground .. I had it all layed out and a plumber friend of mine said if im using the sink as a wet vent the pipe can not be laying flat needs to be pithced up... Buti noticed yours was flat... Is this true or not? Before i start all over again
I am working with what was left by the original plumber. he did it incorrectly. you should have a 1/4 " slope over 4 feet

Sadly this don't help me... i need to know if there are any footings along the way, because i don't have a 3 inch pipe on that side of the house. So i need to go to the other side and don't know if there is a footing in the path. tile through out means no simple fix for the existing floor.. i need help anyone have a thought?

Same deal on a slab on grade building. Although you probably have pvc instead of abs plumbing in those regions.
Wish you could do a video. On slab. Tgat structure looks like it has a Thicker framing of the concrete around foundation floor interior a thinner slab. I could be wrong. I’ve never attempted opening up the slab. But it is on the list todo.
Wouldn’t a slab have rebar I have to cut through? And redo?
