  • If you don't toe the line, you won't get anything: not even bananas.
I explore Gunter Grass "Peeling the Onion" - a journey deep into his soul about Germany's 30s and 40s. "I was too young", "I was obeying orders" - not good enough. Gunter Grass asking himself why the silence? Why remain silent? Why not even the courage to doubt?

So true. I’d love a weekly or fortnightly closed small group course with Lali where we can discuss some of this.

@@Interpretingtradition My comment got through, nothing controversial. The feeling is mutual of course.

Remember The Tin Drum from my teens in the 1960's. In the bookstore it was shelved in the "dirty" books section although it didn't have much sex in it. It was considered a book for rebellious teens. I suppose I need to go back and read it from a mature perspective.

I haven't read it. I will. But according to his autobiography, it was a 'reaction' to what had happened, and he emphasizes a first knee-jerk reaction. That's why he continued to write and 'update' his reaction, and ultimately, the painful, mature introspective search for the ugly, real truth.

@@Interpretingtradition interesting how universal the Catholic Church is. Much of what he said was similar to my thoughts as a Catholic schoolboy in America. Vatican II did drive me away from the Church. Did not get the reference to the Freemasons. What is that?

I wonder if Gunter read Rudolf Steiner as Steiner said in secret of the warrior monks the knights Templar the Second World War stated due to eight lower consciousness souls. As Steiner says you have to lift yourself up spiritually to become Christ conscious and you will speak up put your hand up

Find out who the bolsheviks were, and what they did to the Russian people. Then you will have the answer to his mothers question.
