Edward Said was the person who guided me as I tried to understand what was happening in the Middle East. This is a beautiful conversation.. Given what is happening in the region at the moment, we could use a man like this to help us understand.. Hamas exists because no one has been listening to the Palestinian experience. No doubt the experience of Jews following World War II has been captivating and on some level inspiring. A "land without people for a people without land" was a compelling fiction and many of us embraced it. The violence eventually prompted us to ponder deeper questions, including what about the people who actually lived their for hundreds of years before the Zionists mobilized their forces? Edward Said helped me when those questions arose for me. I miss him sorely.

There is a online movements to erase Edward Said from the internet. It is already cleared that some of his articles are already disappeared.Try to google Edward Said right now and on the first or second page results. you will see sponsored fake News saying something negative about Said( said supported terrorist....etc) it is insane how the major news outlets support Israeli government. That's why many employees are protesting against their companies' policies by being loyal to a foreign country like Israel. And it is totally acceptable

I am not a middle eastern nor a westerner. I started reading about middle east in 2021. The more I read the more I understand and I become sad. I can now connect the dots between what happened in the middle east post ww2 and what lead to 9/11 and how the western leaders have been funding the 75 year long brutal occupation. Most of its history US have been in war in order to keep the interests of its oligarchs. US supported so many genocides. The Bangladeshi genocide, the Vietnam wars and Iraq war and so on. So much death and destruction. I am glad that the people outside the western sphere are coming to the understanding who are the real terrorists. Hoping for the US empire to go like the British and hoping for a free Palestine from river to the sea.

I’m grateful for being able to listen to an interview like this. The occupation of the Palestinian people didn’t simply dispossess them of their land and property. It has also sought to erase the existence of the Palestinians as a people.
Former Israeli PM Golda Meir herself once stated, “There were no such thing as Palestinians...They did not exist.”
Had this happened hundreds or thousands of years ago, it would not be extraordinary since similar injustices have happened to many other peoples in the past including the Native Americans. But the fact that it happened practically yesterday, and that we as Americans were complicit in these injustices being carried out should provoke outrage in everyone that believes in freedom and the right of a people to self-determination.

Excellent citation! Can you reference it (sources where you found it)? Isn’t that what the Nazi were saying about the Jews during WWII? All you have to do is to look into Golda Meir’s eyes and you’ll see a very internally tormented prime minister frustrated by the dream of a wet dream. That’s a lot of torments for any prime to handle!

I would point out that the Israel Palestine story spans two world wars, hence two post war 'reorganisation' & reconstruction periods, the Bolshevik revolution & rise of the USSR, the defeat & dismantling of the 400 year old Ottoman empire, the decline & demise of the British empire, & the rise of the new global power, the USA, & the extended Cold War.
Not to mention the historical movements of ppl & power shifts of a location between Egypt, Europe, Persia, Babylon, Greece & Arabia, the rise of Islam, & the endless conflict bw the two most powerful religions of the last 1500 years, the Crusades etc.
If it any wonder that simplistic modern notions such as self determination haven't prevailed?
You do know that nation states are quite new things, that most of those established post wars failed, that millions of ppl were displaced, forcibly relocated etc by the winners ...
Do you know how many Germans & Poles had to move after WW2, how many died when Pakistan was created, how many Stalin relocated etc?
Compared to those upheavals the tragedy of Palestine, even the deliberate violence of it, was minor.
That seems harsh, but it is a fact; huge upheavals elsewhere dwarf the nonetheless tragic reality of the moral hypocrisy that is Zionism.
The last 25 years .. yes, your comment is more relevant there.

I did not say Marxism. I said Marx. You should know about the difference.
Marxism is a body of ideas and a method of analysis, mainly of capitalism but also of some other aspects of human history and society. Al-Azm use the marxist method to critique Said.
So, you should read on Encyclopaedia Britannica or Wikipedia, for example, to know what Marxism is. That’s what a professor also would define.
Marxism is not a social economic system. Socialism or communism is. You should also distinguish between the two like any student learning about concepts and definitions.
What you you refer to is called Stalinism and Maoism by Marxists.
Capitalism has also killed millions of people: Nazi Germany was capitalist, the extermination of the Indians, the slave trade, Genocides today and civil wars today have taken place within capitalist countries, uneven development is killing people everyday.

Would things have taken a different turn if the Palestinian people had had a leader like Edward Said - Arafat was not a man western leaders could do business with - he might have been popular with the Arabs but for people in the West he was just a terrorist - the Munich massacre brought the plight of the Palestinians to the fore but it was a desaster for the reputation of the people - I had great respect for E.Said but couldn't understand how he could approve of Arafat - now Hamas are carrying on the same way - all at the expense of the ordinary Palestinian people - the upper classes live far away from that godforsaken part of the world. My heart goes out for all the victims of so much injustice - E. Said wrote some interesting books but nothing helps to alliviate the misery of the millions of Palestinians who have been robbed of their homeland and the right to exist - so sad for E. Said that he had to die in exil away from his beloved homeland. Thx for the docu!

Arafat did not trust Said because of what happened between both. Apparently, Arafat wanted to use him for propaganda purposes. But then Arafat caught him in a claim that could not be. Not exactly a lie but something half true.

@@lenwilkinson672 you're clearly talking out of your rear end, and obviously just another yank that's geographically-challenge. Yorkshire has a distinct culture, accent, and identity, much like Cornwall, or even the Black Country. To call it just another "piece of land" so as to diminish its identity is asking for trouble.
