Recipe for making your own gelatin plate. You can increase the pan size as needed, use the same ratio of gelatin to water.
8" square pan- disposable aluminum
4 packets of unflavored gelatin
1 cup of cold water
1 cup of boiling water
Empty the 4 packets of gelatin into the pan and pour in the cold water. Stir to dissolve completely. Add in the boiling water. Stir. Mixture should be clear. Skim the surface bubbles off with a piece of paper. Leave to set up. You can place it in the refrigerator to firm.
Gently take the gelatin sheet out of the pan and place on a plastic surface. Now go have fun.
This video didn't answer the main question I had (which is how to consistently print a bunch if fabric) but watching you is just so much fun and inspiring. I imagine taking a class from you is a blast and awakes an avalanche of creativity!
apologies, I didn't see this earlier. I was sick for months last year. If I read your question accurately...you are not sure how to print fabric with a consistent or cohesive look? When I want more fabrics that will work together in a larger project I limit my colors and print on larger pieces of fabric so the print patterns can overlap and blend together. I keep adding to a fabric as the paint dries. Working in layers helps create cohesive fabrics. Let me know if I read your question correctly.
I found this video not only full of useful information but also very meditative. Liz, I hope you will consider making more of these videos! Thank you!!
I am so happy you liked it and found it meditative ❤️❤️
It is good to see a familiar face! I didn't know you had moved. It has been a long time since I took the block printing class with Jamie Malden at Artistic Artefacts. Great video. Thanks.
Hi Marilyn! That was a long time ago. I was actually thinking about it recently as I found a couple photos from then. Glad you liked the video 🙂
thank you so much for this video. wonderful. i've messed with gelli printing and have never been satisfied...now i know why. yippee skippee.
So glad I could help Tela! Have fun printing.
Nice video Liz! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks Michele!
Nice video and so much useful information and inspiration. Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge.
Thanks Carol Ann.
From Sri Lanka and l,m really liked what you do l things l am already in this path am so glad. Thank you.
Hi Kalyani, Thanks so much. Textile art is so enjoyable and relaxing too
Thank you Liz!!! I never used my gelli plate for fabric and inherited a box of jars jacquard fabric paint (with extender !) Seems like a great alternative to dying! Thank you again for you inspirations!
Hey Eleanor, sorry, for the delay in replying. Just now getting caught up from my trip to Italy. Let me know how your printing goes! It is so much fun.
I dyed cotton fabric with KoolAid. Great colors for child’s quilt
always a fun technique! Works on wool too I think.
Its new to me- thank you, liz
You are welcome. It is so much fun!
Excellent experience. You have a talent for teaching, as well as being so creative. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Linda! I love teaching just as much as I love creating. Hope you give it a try. 😊🧵🪡
So interesting! Thanks for the help. I wonder if I could get my husband to make me some wood printing blocks 🤔
It would be great if he could! I think they use a pretty hard wood for durability. Let us know how it works.
Using gelatine has its drawbacks. For a start, it harbours bacteria as it rots down, so the longer you have it the more it may affect you.
I discard gelatin before it starts to mold. It is easy and inexpensive to make a new plate. Gelatin has the bonus of being natural and biodegradable. The synthetic plates are neither.
Thank you, Liz! I have several gelli plates, but am going to try making my own. You said you had made one like 22x36 (or something like that-what on earth did you use for a mold? Wracking my brain….
For the giant one I put heavy duty plastic on a table then built a dam with pottery clay. My intention was to remove the clay afterwards but it didn't create a big lip so just printed with the clay around the border. I know some people use sheet trays (restaurant supply). They are too big to remover from the pan so you will get paint buildup around the edges.
It seems like there would be some interesting potential if you used one of those denser screens for a resist rather than for paint...
Absolutely, they can also be used with discharge products if you have dyed fabric. So many possibilities!
I’m in Australia so what is the weight per gelatin packet please?
Hi Julie. The packets are .25oz 4 packets are 1oz
I'm really excited about making this gelli plate ... But ... It would help if you specified the size or weight of the packet of gelatin. Not all packets are the same???
Hi, the standard Knox brand gelatin has about 2 teaspoons of gelatin (7grams). I haven't measured other brands but generally use the packet count. I have used gelatin in bulk but when I am traveling the packets are easier to transport and use.
@@Textileevolution thank you so much. Love, love, your work 🤗. I'm on an island in the Azores, so interesting fabric is not easy to come by. I've been dyeing old bed sheets
@@brendaeaton7675 Yay for using old textiles and giving them a new life. Don't forget old table linens. They dye beautifully and many have wonderful designs.
Awesome
Thanks!! Have fun printing.
thank you!!!!!!
You are welcome! Have fun printing ❤️❤️
When making my own geli plate does the bottom surface of the pan need to be flat, void of any lines, etc?
No need to have the bottom flat, just be sure to not flip it over when removing it from the pan
i guess my question is the hand of the fabric the same if you use a paint like Jaquard, pebeo, etc.
Hi Patricia, Those paints need to be mixed with textile medium simply because they are more of a heavy body consistency. I have used Dye-Na-Flow too. You get a very watercolor feel and it doesn't hold patterns as well.
It is harder to get a thin layer of paint with the heavy body paints which is why I recommend adding a textile medium to thin them down. You can use them as is but it is the amount of paint that changes the hand. You can use water to thin paint down but if you use too much you will break the molecular bonds in the paint.
Can you use a yoga mat for your foam mat?
A yoga mat might work, I have not tried it. Make sure you use the non-textured side.
Fun
Are you saying "Avalon" or "Evolon" fabric? Thanks!
Avalon by roc-lon. Artistic artifacts carries it
Though evolon would work too
Living in Denmark I dont know What delipaper is. Maybe I spell it wrong ?
Deli paper is a waxed paper used to wrap sandwiches at a Delicatessen (deli) in the US. It is not as heavily waxed as waxed paper in the grocery store. It is a bit heavier/stronger than tissue paper. I did find this link so you can get a better idea of what it is. I don't know if this is expensive. It is a big package. It is wonderful to use to create in collage. www.desertcart.dk/products/48485951-gordon-choice-deli-wax-paper-10-500-deli-wax-paper-10-x-10-75-pack-of-500
Hi Liz,
My question deals with the brayers...which is preferred...soft. or hard...And which application do you use them
Hi Lucia, I use a soft brayer. I use them for spreading paint on the plate and also to create texture by placing fabric on top of a textured item such as those woven placemats I showed and running a paint covered brayer over them. The brayer picks up the texture of the item. Hope that makes sense.
@@LizKettle THANK YOU
I could not consentrate because I was watching you lay the fabric down on the black "blob" of paint over and over 🙈😊 ....I guess I'm easily distracted!!!😁😁😁
Funny! You must have been worried that I was going to wreck it.
@@Textileevolution yes! Exactly! .......I'm hopeless!!😁 But,- Nice printing!!!❤🙂
slow stitching
A bit different from Slow Stitching Mel because it is done with the intention of meditation. 🙂
