Brilliant job, the best one of these I've seen, many thanks for posting this video. I love the overhang around the inner edge of the false ceiling surround, most of the DIY builds I've seen don't do this, but it seems important to me as a way of hiding the LED strip as well as increasing the effect of the starfield being way up in the distance beyond the ceiling. Can I ask, where is the LED strip mounted - is it on the horizontal or vertical? Thanks again, this video's been extremely useful as I'm going to begin my own attempt at this next month.
Thanks so much for your positive feedback and message. It was a pleasure to read and I greatly appreciate it. The LED strip is mounted on the horizontal part and points light straight up, so only ceiling edges would appear to be washed out and not the whole star ceiling. I hope it helps and good luck with your project! Do not hesitate to get in touch if you will have further questions along the way.
@@DIY_it_ALL Thanks so much for your reply, very helpful: I'd been trying to visualise where the best placement for the LED strip was - and yours works perfectly, so I'll go with a horizontal mount. I've seen several of these starfield DIYs where there's no lowered outer surround, rather the whole starfield is contained in a "dropped box" which, to my eyes, 100% misses the point of what makes these look so good. Thanks again, yours is the video that's fully inspired me (i.e. yours is the build I'm going to copy!) Cheers, keep yourself safe and healthy, all the best.
This is exactly what I want to do in my home theater!! This one is soo perfect! You perfectly understand how light placement is so important beautiful I guess I should keep this video saved for when I get to that room!!

Hi, I really like what you have done here and I am looking to do something similar to a room in my home. Is there anyway you can make a separate video breaking down everything you did in and what you used in detail to pull this off. I would really appreciate it. I'm sure I'm not the only one wanting to see this.

This would go excellent in my game room.. i can imagine the look on peoples faces when we are playing mario kart/party and suddenly the ceiling lights up with stars..
Hello, I like how you converted this ceiling to something amazing. Great work. Would you mind sharing the dimensions of the wood used to prepare the ceiling tray please ?
Loved your video. A job well done! Can you guide on how you connected 15 m of addressable led strip. I mean addressable led strip are only available in 5m rolls. Can you possibly make a tutorial on connecting 15m led addressable strip as a single strip project
Hi Monis, Thanks so much for your kind comments. You are absolutely right, addressable LED's do come in 5m lengths. But it is very easy to join them by soldering strips together or just using small wires to join them (like any other LED strip). The strip can be as long as you want it to be, but the key here is to maintain voltage throughout the strip and ensure it does not drop below required levels. Try searching 'addressable LED power injection' or 'addressable LED voltage drop' on RUclips and you should find some tutorials. I might do LED strip tutorial video in the future, but my focus now is on the new project I am working on - bedroom with projector and cinema surround sound system all mounted within the ceiling. Projector will come down and go back up into the ceiling whilst using a remote control. Feel free to subscribe to my channel and keep an eye on my videos. Thanks again for your comment and take care.
Great video one of the best I’ve seen 👏🏼👏🏼. At 4:42 did you connect the leds in a circle back to the power supply to make it that bright because mines aren’t that bright and I use the exact setup u mentioned. Did u power inject every how many feet??
Thanks so much for your comment. Yes, I did connect LED's into a circuit within the driver terminals and injected power to the strip every 2 meters (around 6-7 feet). Hope it helps and good luck!
I got it set up but it doesn’t look as good as yours lol. From 6:43 to 7:20 how did you get that effect, did you customized it or it’s already preprogrammed? I’m using the meteor effect but it’s not as fast and vibrant as yours
I used SP108E addressable LED controller, which came pre-programmed with around 200 different colour modes/settings. It's not expensive, give it a try. :)
Extremely excellent build!! Fantastic!! You should start doing professional installs, you could probably make some good money. Looks very professional and is amazing!! Keep up the great work.

What a beautiful looking ceiling, its lovely, can you please tell me what type of fiber glass lights are they and what type of strip light have you used for the coving please, l would like to do something like that to my ceiling, Thank you
It's fine to paint over fibre optic strands. As you can see they shine through just fine and I applied two coats of paint. Though I did leave them sticking out by about 2-3mm in case I would need to trim them down in future after a refresh coat of paint.
I have a question. When you painted above the fiber optic mini lights, how is possible not to paint them so that the emitted light to be untouchable? Is some kind special paint? Thank you in advance. Congratulations perfect job
Thanks so much for you your comment. Painting over fibre optic strands does not affect them as you'd think and they shine through just fine. However when trimming the strands, I did leave them sticking out by around 2-3mm in case I would need to trim them further after another coat of paint (if I needed to refresh the ceiling in the future). Hope it helps.
Hi, thanks very much for your comment! Painting over fibre optic strands is fine. Light shines through absolutely fine, as you can see in my case. Good luck!
Thanks so much! The soffit is 500mm deep and height between it and ceiling is 250mm (100 mm for the bottom 'lip' and 150mm for the 'base' which is fixed directly to ceiling). Hope it makes sense.
How do you paint the ceiling without painting over the LEDs/fiber/pinholes? I don't get it - it looked like you rollered right over them, but how does that not cover them with paint?
It is ok to paint over fibres, they shine through absolutely fine (I did two coats of white vinyl matt paint). However I also left them sticking out about 3mm for future painting. When they will no longer shine through, I will cut ends by about a millimeter to expose fresh unpainted fibre ends. Hope it makes sense.

That timber piece does not go above the existing ceiling. And I had to cut the coving because that was the only place where I could attach the timber, everywhere else was plasterboard and attaching timber frame to plasterboard would not work. Hope it makes sense.
Fantastic job.. like a few others I'm trying to replicate it, I've a slightly larger room with a similar 240cm ceiling height. I've read and reread the comments below and even resorted to measuring my computer screen and comparing your 4" roller to get measurments. Adding mesurements to the sketch up plan would have been ideal. The drop looks 200mm (you've mentioned a few heights below) with a 60-70mm lip (2x2 plus plaster board and edge) this leaves the gap to original ceiling from lip @ 130-140mm. No plaster board on the vertical edge of the lip, just the plasterboard edge bead?

Hi Thomas, Thanks for your comment. LED's last much longer than standard incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, so durability would be the last thing I would worry about. I apologize for missing it, but how did you hang the false ceiling? I think I saw screws going into the plaster board but didn’t see what you attached the screws to. I’m assuming you put the plaster right up against the current ceiling and drilled into the studs?
How did you install the led strip lighting ? Is it flush with the wood ? Did you drywall over top of it ? More detail on that would be greatly appreciated

Hi, Thanks for your question. I built the frame using 2x2's. The suspended part is 500mm off the wall and 270mm off the ceiling - 200mm for the 'base' and 70mm for the 'bottom lip'. The base came out 400mm off the wall and the bottom part 500mm, leaving a 'lip' of 100mm to hide LED strip for indirect lighting. Hope it makes sense.
