WBZ Archives: WBZ’s First Anchor, Arch McDonald, Laid To Rest

On this date in 1985, the “Dean of Boston Broadcasting” was laid to rest. Arch McDonald was WBZ-TV’s first anchor, taking to the airwaves in 1948. Shelby Scott worked with Arch, and reported on his funeral.

This tribute didn't mention that Arch left WBZ-TV in 1969 to anchor a short-lived 10 P.M. newscast on the then WKBG Channel 56. After WKBG shut down it's news department, he went to WCVB Channel 5, then became editorial director at the old WNAC Channel 7 and finally in that same role at WRKO radio.
A true pioneer.
