They used that event to show the rare occasion of a President took time out of their busiest schedule to meet with any citizen on an individual level. He cared enough proven by this among many other goodwill things done.

Murrow was a 3-4 pack a day smoker. He died of lung cancer in his 50s. He always had a cigarette in his mouth.
