They cut it on Monument, his label, in Nashville ('61). The group had an amazing front man, Virgil Johnson, a teacher/principal/DJ from Lubbock. Roy would have had yet another beloved, worldwide mega-hit had he cut it then, but waited till '66 to do it himself. His version charted in the UK and, I believe, Germany and/or The Netherlands- but not Stateside. Fans loved it in concert, though, and this great performance proves it! (BTW- Was he thinking of glamorous Lana Turner when he wrote it? I'll bet he did!)
