    I'm high school student from NE Indiana and I can say that if I could even have the opportunity to have an operation like that even half that size it'd be a blessing of the highest degree

    OMG I loved this. "It's very important to step in the right place." The understatement of the year. Thanks SSLFamilyDad. You're a true McGyver. Great video.

    Well done on running the cable. As a low voltage wiring guy myself I know how challenging it can be. As for the ends, it sounds like you tried RJ45 mod ends? If so using a keystone jack and patch cords is a much better bet. Provides a bit of extra flexibility in future if they need to relocate something and they are much easier to terminate.

    Since you had an existing relationship with one of the employees and now have a relationship with the management/ownership of the grain elevator, you might consider asking if they sell bags of "floor sweepings" it's basically a mix of all the grains that fall out from the loading process and drying process etc most grain places sell these at a discounted rate. Since it is a jumbled mix of all kinds of grains and not a measured ratio mix they cant mix it back in or sell it as standard cattle, pig, goat or chicken feed but they still try and recoup the cost of every bit of grain they can. These floor sweeping are great for chickens as a scratch mix or for pigs. If you can get a good deal it would be a much cheaper way to supplement the cost of much higher fees mixes bought at places like TSC. You might consider looking for some plastic or metal drums with locking tops so you can buy and store grain mix in bulk. It is a much cheaper option to buy from local feed mills. Especially if you can supplement with discounted fees like "floor sweepings"... We joke that it should be called the kitchen sink mix because we have found every kind of grain imaginable in the barrel loads we have bought.

      Great idea Cassidy! A few places around here sell something similar and it is a HUGE $ saver.

    I have never met a farmer/homesteader that wasn’t a jack of all trades. In the 21st century, it makes sense that homesteaders are computer guys too. Keep up the good work, alternate forms of income, gotta love it.

    That was a great video. I had to do the same thing from my router out to a garage apartment I have. Only 175ft though and I bought a cable with the ends.

    What are you doing for health insurance? My little farm in Almont is more of a retirement/side gig (I'm probably 15-20 years older than you) , but I've always been employed, so that was part of the benefit package. Interested in what an independent guy like yourself does for health/dental/optical. Thanks!

    why not run it below ground? should be easier. you can run it in insulated tubing too.

  • @WilliamVallance

    Might be easiest to punch down the ends rather than trying to put RJ45 caps on the ends. There are single keystone jacks that could work for a single run. Leave long enough service loop if in the future a keystone panel is needed.
    For those watching who may not have picked up on what was mentioned in the video... if you do this yourself use outdoor rated cable. The UV rays will eat away at any cable coating not rated to protect against it. Over time it will result in random issues, slow down, then ultimately complete loss.

      surprised you didn't mention anything about what the weather is going to do to the zip-
      ties...

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  5 лет назад +1

      Thise zip ties are uv resistant so they should be good for 5 to 10 years just like the ones that were already on that run from 10 years ago;)

    Hey there.
    I know you use pallets a lot to build various things but I am wondering if you ever explained in a video the best way to break apart a pallet to use it most efficiently.
    If so, do you remember which video it was?
    Thank you :)

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  5 лет назад +1

      Click on my name and go to the channel page. Then look at either playlists or click the search icon and search 'pallets' I did a couple videos on selecting pallets and how I break them down. Hooe that helps!

    Did you quit you job to be full time on the farm. Fixing computers and such is a nice way to pick up extra cash. I use Linux so don't have the problems the Windows iOS crowd does. Although Windows 10 seam to be more reliable than past versions from what I see on the internet.

      Mostly Windows 7/8.1 is fine unless you get a virus, windblows 10 OTOH updates whenever it wants without proper testing so there are a lot of issues there.

    Did you think of using a wireless bridge? Any cons to that?

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  5 лет назад +3

      Thought of wireless bridge or a repeater but all the metal roofing and siding with the building in between made for awful interference. This will be a more reliable solution

    Time to invest in fall protection. Useful for odd jobs and around the homestead. Even a broken leg/arm could put you out of commission for months!

    When you have a farm / homestead, it requires some creativity to find additional avenues of income. I work second and third jobs to fund my homestead.

      @@SSLFamilyDad I guess I don't know much about that, by how would it count the grain? Or is it like estimates? And I guess if it works.. lol.. why not do it wirelessly?
