i think several tarps hung from the top would hold in some more of the heat and keep more wind out some cardboard on the pallet shelters would help deep out a lot of wind also

I made my lab an insulated dog house that is 3’ x 8’. It has a flap door and I hear it with one 100 watt light bulb that typically keeps it between 50 and 70 degrees. I also have a WyzeCam.com camera so I can peek in on her and see what temperature the thermometer shows. She loves it!

I would add tarps to the upper area openings, above where you put the hay bale walls. That will keep more of the wind out of their area. Gusts of wind will carry that snow into their dry area. You could also put the tarp on an angle above their bedding area too, like a lean to...higher in the back, lower in the front toward the hay wall. You could also use plastic for this too, a thicker mil so sun can get in there during the day and warm it up a bit. Stay warm up there.

We use a galvanized 100 gallon stock tank which has the lower drinking area for the pigs. The dairy goats drink from the top. A submersible tank heater keeps ice off evan at 0F. The next week will be a true test, with expected highs in the single digits.

It's not really as cold in northern Ireland as it is there, I think we got down to 32 last night (-1 C) I have a horse stabled, 2 outdoor/indoor cats who are inside at night and a couple pet rabbits which have half the living room fenced off (with their litter boxes). I don't have meat animals yet. I also only have a fireplace to keep us warm so I get the wood collection thing. 👍 To you...

Holy crap you have it good. 8F it went down to -40F the other night. I have to take the battery out of my tractor so it doesn't freeze. The trick up here is to insulate and make crooked small entrances so the wind can't blow in. Pile up the snow around the barn so it acts as insulation. Solar heating the ground helps a lot.

Luckily we don't get temperatures as cold as you do. We have a couple low wattage lights that extend the light for egg production, but it also generates enough heat to prevent freezing at night when we shut them off. This works up to about 25 degrees with little or no freezing. Deep bedding is the other way help our chickens stay warm.
We had a chicken escape and lived through below zero wind chill, snow and no shelter for three days. We finally found her yesterday.

I run one heater in a 55 gallon drum but I keep filled and I water everybody out of that, and in the summertime I add more drums underneath the eve of the barn to fill up. I would close the box up like you're getting ready to mail it and then cut a door and wrap an old blanket around the outside of it and maybe a towel hanging part way over the door for the cats.

My local provincial park will allow you to collect any ‘lying dead wood’ for a small fee of $10 a trip. You can load a semi trailer or a 1/4 ton, it’s just $10 a trip.

I don't use man-made materials for bedding for animals it allows moisture to stay around. Instead I always use straw because it will dry from body heat and also it is quite absorbent. I noticed the cat have blankets or whatever but straw would work much better.

Actually bury the water containers in straw works okay without strong wind! On big tanks surround with straw bales and cover half the top with straw bale only break a 12" x 12" hole only the ice will insulate the water some!

+sslfamilydad question for you, do pigs or goats do more damage to the land?
Recent debate with family members about which animals do more damage to the land, i was saying pigs they were saying goats. now there is a bet.. Keep in mind we dont own any live stock. i thought pigs because of they they hammer and burrow the top soil, they were saying goats because they eat everything.

they need "help" ? - no dude, you are responsible for them. these are animals that have been breed to be farm animals. they are not suited for survival in the wild or cold weather. if they are freezing to death it's not just something that "happens", it's 100% on you.
