Wow! Y’all are so inspiring. We bought some land for cash last summer and are planning to build a modular cabin and begin homesteading. We started vlogging it 2 weeks ago and will be uploading our 3rd video this Friday. We already run a small business selling Goat Milk Soap but we are really wanting to grow our streams of income so that we can get my husband out of his 9-5 electrician job for good. We were planning on starting with just RUclips and hoping it will make passive income from there 😅 where would you suggest we start? The Amazon influencer program sounds amazing! But we don’t have a following and are still getting our feet in the door of making/editing videos!
@@Thehomesteadingjourney congratulations on your cash land purchase! We were fortunate to pay cash (after a decade of frugal savings and hardwork) for our homestead fixer upper 7 years ago. Its a great way to start. RUclips is hard, but I'd start there and I'd not give up. I treasure my early homestead/youtube videos seeing my girls growing up and fond memories and every now and them you'll get a youtube video that takes off and makes some nice income over and over again. Start with something you are passionate about...we started a dog kennel because we love dogs and so we really enjoy it...do something you love and you will stick with it. Can you expand your goat soap business? I like to track every income stream daily and set hyper specific goals like ..goat soap biz, goal $1000/ month...then i work backwards and say ok how much product do i need to sell to reach that goal...then you can get creative and think of more ways to market, expand. You also mentioned your husband is a 9-5 electrician has he considered going off on his own? If an employer has enough work for several electricians, while also taking a big chunk of revenue generated then there should be enough work for him to eventually go on his own and keep all the rebenue... Setting his own pay and hours and perhaps expanding? Instead of 9-5 maybe it becomes 9-noon at a higher rate with more time to focus on other homestead businesses like youtube, goat soap or otherwise. Also love your channel name, documenting the journey from start to finish has real value.. hope that helps...focus on something you will be passionate about, do an amazing job... under promise and over deliver and things will fall into place. Interesting how the term homestead has evolved. 11 years ago I started a mountain bike homestead on 50 acres. I excavated bike and moto trails to serve as paddocks for pigs and chickens. That operation opened the doors to building trails elsewhere. We still do the same things at our farm but now we are grossing 80k a month from providing bike related service to our community. Always down to podcast holler if you want to hear more.
There's not a better time than now. I lived on 15 acres and trucked for a living. We grew a garden but my plan was retire, grow what we ate and buy a portable sawmill. About half the 15 acres were woods. Health went south, couldn't take care of what we had and sold the place. There's no better time than the present for your dreams.
Wishing you better health. I finally saved money for plot of land, but I'm not healthy enough to work it and not sure I want to pay in stages to have others put it all together. No guarantee I'll be able to enjoy it.
@jimwilson9371 I will pray for you as well. I've learned to enjoy the little things and appreciate adaptation. We will move in the next few years and at least get a few chickens, until then, grow bags onto of pallets make an easy to access grow space. Definitely no better time than now. Best of luck.
Kind disappointing that the most profitable businesses for homesteading seem to be not homesteading related. It's kind of like saying your most profitable business on your homestead is providing medical services as a doctor. Sure, you're on a homestead, these are ways you make money, but almost nothing you do to make money requires you to be on a homestead.
A homestead is to provide a home and provide for you and your family. That's the traditional meaning of "homestead" - more centered around surviving and self sufficiency. Not PROFIT. I would say, for a successful homestead, set yourself up for self sufficiency first, then work on making the profit. But that's just according to the way I personally would do it.
I think one of the biggest attractions to city people is the homestead life, or being around farm animals. Especially if they have kids. I'm on 20 acres, 150 fowl, 2 cows, 4 goats, and over a dozen pigs... we're also planning on building an air bnb cabin or put a nice camper up for rent so we can start making money off that as well. But I'll never stop being passionate about the real homestead stuff. I think it's just important to make money where you can.
What I love about this is many of these are ways to earn extra even if you aren't on a homestead like you guys yet. It could be a great way for someone to save the money to be able to make their dream a reality.

Not a single thing here is making money from homesteading. They’re making money while homesteading. That’s fine. Not why anybody watched the video, but okay.
He demonstrates how to make money homesteading. Having the extra time off work, to spend around your home to develop business is indeed homesteading. Just because hes admitting that shearing sheep and selling eggs is a terrible business model, does not mean that his ample "at home time" on the homestead leading to excellent business models is any less homesteading thatn shearing sheep for 15 cents a day.
Yes, I second all of this! I was actually working from home as an Artist as a stay at home mom before we moved to our homestead, and it (along with our real estate investment from our primary residence) is what gave us the ability to make the move. My husband was able to leave his day job and works his own side business as a locksmith when not building stuff on the farm. I create artworks and coloring books (I use Amazon's self publishing service for my books), sell downloads of my pages, and license my artwork to companies for use on their products for a small percentage. This business nets us six figures alone. Locksmith income is next, and what we've got in "development" right now are breeding a few key specialty livestock breeds (that we are personally passionate about and will get a lot out of ourselves) and building an AirBnb for Agritourism, which we've planned since day 1 but we still have a lot of infrastructure to put in. The internet allowing people to work from home IS the way that we can get more people back to homesteading, living with nature, and growing food in an attractive package. No one needs to be "money poor" to have a homestead or farm! You can have it all.
This is really reassuring. In the next two weeks me and the wife are uprooting our lives to try this But our main focus was side businesses to subsidize stuff. Most notably a salon for the wife in a rural town that doesn't have one and an air BnB. To hear that goats and chickens add to the air BnB value is nice to hear. I'm very excited
A lot of this stuff isn't "making money homesteading". It's boilerplate "how to make money" YT video stuff... but by a guy who happens to have a homestead.
Loved this video! All the diversification that included Homesteading. I'd like to put my hobbies into something similar. Also would help my dream to be nomadic in retirement age in 30 or so years in real estate. Hopefully once we get into the homesteading phase, we can then pass it down to one of the kids for our "retirement".

Hey, Debra here. I had an eBay store and it was kicking butt. I trolled the second hand stores and resold the merchandise. It started as a way to make a few dollars a month. Before I knew it I was shipping 15 packages a day. It became too much. It wasn't the money it was the time. It developed a life of it's own and it stopped being fun. It was a source of dread. We as a family moved from TX to CO and it was a perfect time to close it. I was doing a low of $1500 to a max of $3000. I burned out because it was just me and it just wasn't worth it. With that said, it is not an option that should be discounted. There is great money in it but proceed with caution. It can grow to the point where it isn't fun but then I wasn't looking for a job.
I hear you. I've been there too. In cases like this I always see if I can delegate or offload some of the work. It's usually not possible but sometimes it is. For example I have 4 teenagers and for our more taxxing businesses, like our dog kennel, we've basically partnered with our daughter, taught her everything and now she runs it, gets a % and is learning valuable business skills, books, marketing etc..while we have more time. We've also hired virtual assistants on uPwork for other projects. But many times this just doesn't make sense and the work becomes no longer worthwhile. We have been there. Much of our business focus has changed to be more passive for just this reason. Our Airbnb for example provides almost no ongoing work other than normal maintenance. Thx
Homesteading means "life as a settler on a homestead" Which really means "successfully surviving off the land" This guy demonstrates how having more time around the house and less time working has lead him to developing excellent business models. This is indeed homesteading. Just because it doesnt fit the profile of homestead in 1987, making 15 cents for shearing sheep and 2 dollars selling eggs, does not mean that he isnt modernly homesteading. The man is sharing how he has made homesteading a more powerful business than 95% of the working class. And its all because he moved off grid and had the extra at home time to make it happen. Take his monthly wages and then subtract meat/veggies/eggs/water which are his harvests, and you have a damn successful self sufficiency You can raise cows and goats and chickens and be busy 9-5 with that if your ok with that type of hourly wage, but why not get with the times ontop of it?
Keep in mind these are his ways he earns money. There are many like Justin Rhodes who has over a million followers and views he earns money for that. Plus he teams up with Joel salin on books they have written, permaculture abundance plus website and paid subscribers to watch homesteading videos, plus his kids also has channels that they earn money with. But they started out from the beginning. In order to be full time homesteaders and stay on the farm you have to find ways to earn money. There are many who grows lots of microgreens, and have market gardens that they sell to local chefs and they make lots of money tens of thousands per month. I know a person who makes lots of canned items and she opened a shop and sells space in her building to other crafters. So even if their item sells she is earning money monthly from the space. There are many ways of earning money whether goods, knowledge or even residual income. You can read books out loud for audible even.
It's pretty much impossible to compete with the grocery store. Best is making $ to pay for the feed and infrastructure. Then eating your livestock for free.
Growing your own feed is the great equalizer. I'm leary of store bought anything. I'd pay triple to grow it myself, the meat and veggies are all clean from contaminates and chemicals
Thanks for a great podcast Austin, I am excited to watch their RUclips channel to see what all they teach about making money from the homestead. In my area there are allot of homes down around Norris lake that I could purchase and turn into air bnb. It is something I would really love to get involved in.
Thank you so much for this video. I have been working a couple of traditional jobs while trying to get our homestead up and running, and we seem to stumble because I can't devote the time that I want to because of my jobs/time constraints with said jobs. I honestly feel like I have been selling my soul to those companies doing things that I don't even care about, only for us to not succeed at something we really do care about. I really want this dream of ours to succeed and I think doing things like @homesteadhow suggested here, will help us. I showed this video to my wife and my older children, and the older kids are already out scouring garage sales to start right now. I love the idea of linking your businesses, things you are already doing and are passionate about. Thank you again. Both Homesteady and now Homesteadhow are inspirations to us.

Kerry sets a great example in the leap business model! He went all in full time and made it work. We went the route of slowly building side hustles to escape the rat race with. Either way works, just do one and give it your everything! Sounds like your family is ready for it!!!
@@thegreathitesyou are lightyears ahead of me. I am struggling with same issues for past 10 years. I am a single guy working full time job and working full time in the farm. I don't have a wife or kids to help with chores. Air b&b is oversaturated here and very seasonal (2-3 months out of the year). Takes hige capital to build an air b&b. I dont have time, energy, or ability to become a successful youtuber. Nobody here buys farm eggs when they can get them for .99 at walmart.
Homesteading is a lifestyle. Then you look for something to earn money to pay the bills - because even if you're growing your own food, generating your own electricity, catching and storing your own water, and sewing your own clothes from home-grown fibres, you still have bills for a whole lot of things that are just too hard to do at home.
Kerry here-- I am not joking- that would bring a tear to my eye! I am very goal oriented and hitting 100k subscribers has been written on my white board for several years now. I have worked so hard for so many years and videos and edits and I've never worked harder towards a goal. I will be so thankful!
Re selling eggs- instead of raising common egg producing varieties of chickens, and selling eggs for $5 a dozen locally, raise a rare or heritage breed, and sell eggs on eBay for $50 a dozen! It cost the same money in feed to raise rare breeds, and managing an eBay hatching egg business is pretty easy.
For the air bnb, it's a part of being an air bnb member. You pay air bnb per visitor for advertising and permits. Your working under them. At least I think that's how it works
Hi Kerry here. We have an umbrella policy on our homestead, it's pretty reasonable and covers our airbnb and kennel. Plus airbnb has some safeguards in place in regards to potential property damage from guests
I had an Airbnb as well in the country and you have to have an umbrella policy to cover any and everything that could possibly happen ...due to sue happy people
All agrotourism endeavors require an insurance policy, sometimes this can get costly with handicapped access and facilities. But you'll never be sued for other people's negligence
HOLY #@$&! So I have to say, Airbnb has been #1 on my list for the last year, but we have to build something from scratch so the funds are not there yet. I did not think of dog kennel, and while we would have to build that too, that is a great idea and right up my ally. I am constantly mind blown by all of the ways to make money these days from the internet. They never really appeal to me though... I absolutely hate being in front of the camera, but dang!
Our airbnb is a separate unit but we had to fix it up. Many people will convert an attic or basement. Our dog kennel was fun (and less expensive) because we made it off grid. It runs on a few solar panels. We do have to transport out water but it was a fun little build, holds just 4 dogs. Good luck!
You don't even have to buy anything to resell things you could probably look around your house and find things to sell and also you can always find things people are throwing away all the time and if you're willing to pick them up and put them online a lot of times you can just get stuff for free to resell
I started out homesteading. But the hidden things got me and I quit homesteading in favor of earning money. I don't mean to stifle anyone's dream of homesteading but it sucked for me. To start with getting up and feeding animals and cleaning up after them everyday was such a pain in the Arse. Then after about three years I decided I simply had to go on vacation for a break. But try and find anyone knowledgeable and trustworthy enough to take over your maintenance chores like feeding the animals or moving the cows from one pasture to the next etc... Nope Being tied down 24/7 365 just doesn't do it for me it was nothing like I had imagined or hoped for. What I eventually did was got rid of all the animals and planted tens of thousands of Christmas trees. That of course required a significant amount of time before it was worth it. But it did pay off with almost no maintenance. After our first harvest I started growing landscape plants and fruit and ornamental trees. That was when I started to really make a profit. I was selling to a lot of landscape companies as well as homeowners. Well I sold the whole farm a couple of years ago and retired last year at 63. So very happy I will never have to do any sort of farming ever again. Now I am just traveling with my wife during her slow months (She's Still working full time) but she will retire in 3 years and we will be free to travel and enjoy our tie wherever we land and no animals to get up and feed when it is below zero blowing snow etc...
This is definitely something to consider and something we realize after years 😔 we are currently in the process of moving to a new state but we'd like to continue farming eventually after a yr or so of just relaxing a bit and not worrying about farm animals🧘♀️
This is why I won't get any large livestock. I have 7 yo twins and we homeschool. It's important I take them on adventures. My layer chickens and duck are set for a week without me. I have a neighbor that comes over and collects the eggs and keeps them. Makes sure the feeders aren't topped over and are full, and the water is working. The broilers are grown out and processed between planned trips. Everything is on irrigation and timers. I harvest my commercial crops in sync with those adventures. Balance is everything.
@@HomesteadhowWe are getting a homestead with my mother and remodeling an outbuilding into a residence for her. When we want a vacation she will tend our plants and animals. When she wants a vacation, we will tend hers. When the kids are big enough one of them can tend everything. Not doing it alone is probably the answer.
The great thing about the Internet is this would not have been possible even 15 years ago. Now ordinary people are making good money, showing their lives to other ordinary people instead of a bunch of rich schmucks, making money feeding us stupid crap like the kardashians. This is within anyone’s reach who has enough hustle. It’s what America is all about.
Some of my media is eligible to be monitized not youtube but tiktok and facebook. I started homestead content, but dont have any kind of a following for it as a niche. Im starting eith nothing but the house and an acre of land. It would be such a blessing if the revenue streams started revenuing.
"Reselling", crafting, Amazon selling, web marketing, etc. have nothing to do with doing "homesteading." Anyone can do those things without a homestead. A title change is in order.
I could never manage that many different businesses, lol! Plus I don't think I could handle being an Airbnb host. But I will definitely be looking into some of these! (Though I'm assuming the Amazon influencer program is only for people who already have a large following).
Bothers me to resell things. This drives prices up and contributes to inflation. It sounds like such a great idea but morally I don’t think I can do it, not in these times
People are paying for your time in finding good items, inspecting to make sure they're in good order, and presenting them in an accessible manner. A good quality skill book in the bottom of a dusty box at a garage sale isn't worth much because most people don't know it's there. Take it out, clean it, identify it, and put it into an online store where people can find it easily from anywhere in the world, and suddenly it becomes valuable. Theoretically the previous owner could have done all that themselves, but they didn't - because it's work.
Our plan has always been to create an air bb homestead experience. My big concern now is all of the restrictions that have been placed on air bb. For example you can no longer do air bb on a property that you don't live in in some states. The reason for this makes sense. People come in to an area and but up inexpensive (to them) properties and then air bb the rooms. This takes housing options from the locals and increases rent in the area. People become homeless over it. So it is a good thing. I only plan to own the property that I live on and rent air bb on the property. My worry is that this will become even move strict and somehow prevent me from doing it after buying a property that I intend to pay for, with the air bb income. Is there anything I can do to be certain that I will be able to do air bb? I know some home loans won't allow it either.
I'd suggest talking to a lawyer, and maybe your local politicians. If you build something for the purpose of renting it out, and it's on your own property that you live on, then you are not harming other local people's ability to find accommodation. Make sure the politicians know you exist before they start making laws, and lobby them to make laws in such a way as to not stop people like yourself from bringing money into your region. If they ban air bb anyway, then your best option is to rent out your new building as longer term accommodation. It's not as lucrative and there's a lot of very justified bad opinions about landlords, but you can choose to be a good landlord.

It's actually a little sad that you need to be quite tech savvy to make money from your homestead. I enjoyed the video, but with the exception of the Air BnB, the resale stuff and MAYBE the small kennel, you need to be on the computer A LOT.
When hearing the word homestead I usually think of the homestead act of 1862 where people would get free land from the govt as long as they would make improvements to it. I thought that to be a called a "homestead" it had to be part of the homestead act. But I looked up the word on the online etymology dictionary and it says: "Old English hamstede "home, town, village," from home (n.) + stead (q.v.). In U.S. use, "a lot of land adequate for the maintenance of a family" (1690s), defined by the Homestead Act of 1862 as 160 acres. Similar formation in Dutch heemstede, Danish hjemsted." So, according to that I can call my land a homestead as well. Anyway, according to this video if you want to make money forget about home steading and become an influencer.
Very interesting and very informative. I'm playing close attention to the new names for me (eg Facebook Marketplace, Amazon Affilliate Programme). Would it be a problem if, as suggested, the world transferrred over completely to digital money and only on-line money transfer and presentation of goods? And the Social Credit ID and Scoring? Your cup of tea? And choice? How would you decide what you are selling is worth. And the Home B&B. Especially if Travel becomes a problem. Perhaps you should go into depth on one or two side hussels.

I would like to say that because of the pain from 911 alone it would be well to not only save for your home but also try and be kind with your pricing. It hurts some people to see the footage of goodness.
I don’t consider being a hotel to be a “homestead” occupation. If he started building rocket ships or doing surgery or trading stocks on his homestead, I wouldn’t consider those to be “ways to make money on your homestead” …those are just businesses.
Yeah. We got 2 made goats. And they were awesome outside of the stuff males do when lacking the female. Ha. But they would walk around house and yard with us.
so what money is actually coming from actually homesteading? seems that if this guy wasn't an internet influencer he wouldn't be living how he is. and I am not seeing why his homesteading class is any better than all of Austin's free videos. If this guy cant support himself homesteading then how am I to believe his course can teach me how. I think he would do better selling classes on internet influencing rather than homesteading. I appreciate the entrepreneurial spirit but I was hoping to learn homesteading income ideas. Gabe Brown has somewhere in the area of 17 business all are actually from homestead generated income. If this guy; as nice as he is, had to live off of homesteading alone, I get the feeling bills may not get paid and his life style would not be what it is. I guess in short the title is miss leading.
It's kinda disheartening to spend the day doing a video just to get 1 view, but we'll keep doing it. Hopefully soon, RUclips will let our videos be seen. Enjoying the content you guys produce, trying to learn as much as I can from you.
I find this whole video pretty interesting, since the guy being interviewed is pretty much doing everything you could do in the suburbs and not "Homesteading". Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for the guy / couple that they're making good money, but they could cut down number of chickens and just keep a couple of the goats as pets (petting zoo) and focus on doing an ABNB rental / "try homesteading" for Yuppies.
Way to move the goal post. Airbnb isnt something that the people interested in homesteading want. After all the point is to get away from the city. Why bring it to you?
Ha! Pet goats, not sheep! Well we are far from Amish but we do have 15 chickens, 2 gardens and this year we started aquaponics indoor..we heat our entire home and water from firewood we harvest on our property. We have a long way to go but for me being a honesteader is being able to live and sustain 100% from my property without having to leave, work rely on thr man while trying to produce and eat from our property...and we've done that for 7 years now.. never had to leave. Our goats were dumb and I admit we have a long way to go..Go..but at this point I have a paid off 20 acre property with gardens, chickens, aquaponics and the property itself is paying for everything. I hope to do more homestead things with our freedom like get hogs and get solar. Thx
I will admit, not exactly homesteading. I will agree farming/homesteading is not a money maker, but it is about working on the ecology of a piece of land too and finding your ecological/economic niche. Also, if you don’t like animal chores/firewood side hustles/cleaning paddocks to make compost why are you out there. will agree though, these ideas would be good for a hustle for my partner while I do the actual homesteading, I honestly don’t enjoy being in front of a screen a bunch and she’s more mainstream than me.

Interesting how the term homestead has evolved. 11 years ago I started a mountain bike homestead on 50 acres. I excavated bike and moto trails to serve as paddocks for pigs and chickens. That operation opened the doors to building trails elsewhere. We still do the same things at our farm but now we are grossing 80k a month from providing bike related service to our community. There's not a better time than now. I lived on 15 acres and trucked for a living. We grew a garden but my plan was retire, grow what we ate and buy a portable sawmill. About half the 15 acres were woods. Health went south, couldn't take care of what we had and sold the place. There's no better time than the present for your dreams.
Wishing you better health. I finally saved money for plot of land, but I'm not healthy enough to work it and not sure I want to pay in stages to have others put it all together. No guarantee I'll be able to enjoy it.

Kind disappointing that the most profitable businesses for homesteading seem to be not homesteading related. It's kind of like saying your most profitable business on your homestead is providing medical services as a doctor. Sure, you're on a homestead, these are ways you make money, but almost nothing you do to make money requires you to be on a homestead.
A homestead is to provide a home and provide for you and your family. That's the traditional meaning of "homestead" - more centered around surviving and self sufficiency. Not PROFIT. I would say, for a successful homestead, set yourself up for self sufficiency first, then work on making the profit. But that's just according to the way I personally would do it.

I think one of the biggest attractions to city people is the homestead life, or being around farm animals. Especially if they have kids. I'm on 20 acres, 150 fowl, 2 cows, 4 goats, and over a dozen pigs... we're also planning on building an air bnb cabin or put a nice camper up for rent so we can start making money off that as well. But I'll never stop being passionate about the real homestead stuff. I think it's just important to make money where you can.

He demonstrates how to make money homesteading. Having the extra time off work, to spend around your home to develop business is indeed homesteading. Just because hes admitting that shearing sheep and selling eggs is a terrible business model, does not mean that his ample "at home time" on the homestead leading to excellent business models is any less homesteading thatn shearing sheep for 15 cents a day.
Yes, I second all of this! I was actually working from home as an Artist as a stay at home mom before we moved to our homestead, and it (along with our real estate investment from our primary residence) is what gave us the ability to make the move. My husband was able to leave his day job and works his own side business as a locksmith when not building stuff on the farm. I create artworks and coloring books (I use Amazon's self publishing service for my books), sell downloads of my pages, and license my artwork to companies for use on their products for a small percentage. This business nets us six figures alone. Locksmith income is next, and what we've got in "development" right now are breeding a few key specialty livestock breeds (that we are personally passionate about and will get a lot out of ourselves) and building an AirBnb for Agritourism, which we've planned since day 1 but we still have a lot of infrastructure to put in. The internet allowing people to work from home IS the way that we can get more people back to homesteading, living with nature, and growing food in an attractive package. No one needs to be "money poor" to have a homestead or farm! You can have it all.

Loved this video! All the diversification that included Homesteading. I'd like to put my hobbies into something similar. Also would help my dream to be nomadic in retirement age in 30 or so years in real estate. Hopefully once we get into the homesteading phase, we can then pass it down to one of the kids for our "retirement".

Hey, Debra here. I had an eBay store and it was kicking butt. I trolled the second hand stores and resold the merchandise. It started as a way to make a few dollars a month. Before I knew it I was shipping 15 packages a day. It became too much. It wasn't the money it was the time. It developed a life of it's own and it stopped being fun. It was a source of dread. We as a family moved from TX to CO and it was a perfect time to close it. I was doing a low of $1500 to a max of $3000. I burned out because it was just me and it just wasn't worth it. With that said, it is not an option that should be discounted. There is great money in it but proceed with caution. It can grow to the point where it isn't fun but then I wasn't looking for a job.
I hear you. I've been there too. In cases like this I always see if I can delegate or offload some of the work. It's usually not possible but sometimes it is. For example I have 4 teenagers and for our more taxxing businesses, like our dog kennel, we've basically partnered with our daughter, taught her everything and now she runs it, gets a % and is learning valuable business skills, books, marketing etc..while we have more time. We've also hired virtual assistants on uPwork for other projects. But many times this just doesn't make sense and the work becomes no longer worthwhile. We have been there. Much of our business focus has changed to be more passive for just this reason. Our Airbnb for example provides almost no ongoing work other than normal maintenance. Thx

This guy demonstrates how having more time around the house and less time working has lead him to developing excellent business models. This is indeed homesteading.
Just because it doesnt fit the profile of homestead in 1987, making 15 cents for shearing sheep and 2 dollars selling eggs, does not mean that he isnt modernly homesteading.
The man is sharing how he has made homesteading a more powerful business than 95% of the working class. And its all because he moved off grid and had the extra at home time to make it happen.
Take his monthly wages and then subtract meat/veggies/eggs/water which are his harvests, and you have a damn successful self sufficiency
You can raise cows and goats and chickens and be busy 9-5 with that if your ok with that type of hourly wage, but why not get with the times ontop of it?
Keep in mind these are his ways he earns money. There are many like Justin Rhodes who has over a million followers and views he earns money for that. Plus he teams up with Joel salin on books they have written, permaculture abundance plus website and paid subscribers to watch homesteading videos, plus his kids also has channels that they earn money with. But they started out from the beginning. In order to be full time homesteaders and stay on the farm you have to find ways to earn money. There are many who grows lots of microgreens, and have market gardens that they sell to local chefs and they make lots of money tens of thousands per month. I know a person who makes lots of canned items and she opened a shop and sells space in her building to other crafters. So even if their item sells she is earning money monthly from the space. There are many ways of earning money whether goods, knowledge or even residual income. You can read books out loud for audible even.

It's pretty much impossible to compete with the grocery store. Best is making $ to pay for the feed and infrastructure. Then eating your livestock for free.
Growing your own feed is the great equalizer. I'm leary of store bought anything. I'd pay triple to grow it myself, the meat and veggies are all clean from contaminates and chemicals

I have been working a couple of traditional jobs while trying to get our homestead up and running, and we seem to stumble because I can't devote the time that I want to because of my jobs/time constraints with said jobs. I honestly feel like I have been selling my soul to those companies doing things that I don't even care about, only for us to not succeed at something we really do care about. I really want this dream of ours to succeed and I think doing things like @homesteadhow suggested here, will help us.

I don't have a wife or kids to help with chores. Air b&b is oversaturated here and very seasonal (2-3 months out of the year). Takes hige capital to build an air b&b. I dont have time, energy, or ability to become a successful youtuber. Nobody here buys farm eggs when they can get them for .99 at walmart.
People have to realize Homesteading is not farming it is marketing. It's like the Hotel business. A service industry catering to people.
Homesteading is a lifestyle.
Then you look for something to earn money to pay the bills - because even if you're growing your own food, generating your own electricity, catching and storing your own water, and sewing your own clothes from home-grown fibres, you still have bills for a whole lot of things that are just too hard to do at home.

Re selling eggs- instead of raising common egg producing varieties of chickens, and selling eggs for $5 a dozen locally, raise a rare or heritage breed, and sell eggs on eBay for $50 a dozen! It cost the same money in feed to raise rare breeds, and managing an eBay hatching egg business is pretty easy.

For the air bnb, it's a part of being an air bnb member. You pay air bnb per visitor for advertising and permits. Your working under them. At least I think that's how it works
Hi Kerry here. We have an umbrella policy on our homestead, it's pretty reasonable and covers our airbnb and kennel. Plus airbnb has some safeguards in place in regards to potential property damage from guests

I had an Airbnb as well in the country and you have to have an umbrella policy to cover any and everything that could possibly happen ...due to sue happy people
All agrotourism endeavors require an insurance policy, sometimes this can get costly with handicapped access and facilities. But you'll never be sued for other people's negligence
HOLY #@$&! So I have to say, Airbnb has been #1 on my list for the last year, but we have to build something from scratch so the funds are not there yet. I did not think of dog kennel, and while we would have to build that too, that is a great idea and right up my ally. I am constantly mind blown by all of the ways to make money these days from the internet. They never really appeal to me though... I absolutely hate being in front of the camera, but dang!
Our airbnb is a separate unit but we had to fix it up. Many people will convert an attic or basement. Our dog kennel was fun (and less expensive) because we made it off grid. It runs on a few solar panels. We do have to transport out water but it was a fun little build, holds just 4 dogs. Good luck!

You don't even have to buy anything to resell things you could probably look around your house and find things to sell and also you can always find things people are throwing away all the time and if you're willing to pick them up and put them online a lot of times you can just get stuff for free to resell
I started out homesteading. But the hidden things got me and I quit homesteading in favor of earning money. I don't mean to stifle anyone's dream of homesteading but it sucked for me. To start with getting up and feeding animals and cleaning up after them everyday was such a pain in the Arse. Then after about three years I decided I simply had to go on vacation for a break. But try and find anyone knowledgeable and trustworthy enough to take over your maintenance chores like feeding the animals or moving the cows from one pasture to the next etc... Nope Being tied down 24/7 365 just doesn't do it for me it was nothing like I had imagined or hoped for. What I eventually did was got rid of all the animals and planted tens of thousands of Christmas trees. That of course required a significant amount of time before it was worth it. But it did pay off with almost no maintenance. After our first harvest I started growing landscape plants and fruit and ornamental trees. That was when I started to really make a profit. I was selling to a lot of landscape companies as well as homeowners. Well I sold the whole farm a couple of years ago and retired last year at 63. So very happy I will never have to do any sort of farming ever again. Now I am just traveling with my wife during her slow months (She's Still working full time) but she will retire in 3 years and we will be free to travel and enjoy our tie wherever we land and no animals to get up and feed when it is below zero blowing snow etc...

This is definitely something to consider and something we realize after years 😔 we are currently in the process of moving to a new state but we'd like to continue farming eventually after a yr or so of just relaxing a bit and not worrying about farm animals🧘♀️
This is why I won't get any large livestock. I have 7 yo twins and we homeschool. It's important I take them on adventures. My layer chickens and duck are set for a week without me. I have a neighbor that comes over and collects the eggs and keeps them. Makes sure the feeders aren't topped over and are full, and the water is working. The broilers are grown out and processed between planned trips. Everything is on irrigation and timers. I harvest my commercial crops in sync with those adventures. Balance is everything.
@@HomesteadhowWe are getting a homestead with my mother and remodeling an outbuilding into a residence for her. When we want a vacation she will tend our plants and animals. When she wants a vacation, we will tend hers. When the kids are big enough one of them can tend everything. Not doing it alone is probably the answer.

Some of my media is eligible to be monitized not youtube but tiktok and facebook. I started homestead content, but dont have any kind of a following for it as a niche. Im starting eith nothing but the house and an acre of land. It would be such a blessing if the revenue streams started revenuing.

"Reselling", crafting, Amazon selling, web marketing, etc. have nothing to do with doing "homesteading." Anyone can do those things without a homestead. A title change is in order.
I could never manage that many different businesses, lol! Plus I don't think I could handle being an Airbnb host. But I will definitely be looking into some of these! (Though I'm assuming the Amazon influencer program is only for people who already have a large following).
Finally an honest RUclipsr.
Bothers me to resell things. This drives prices up and contributes to inflation. It sounds like such a great idea but morally I don’t think I can do it, not in these times
People are paying for your time in finding good items, inspecting to make sure they're in good order, and presenting them in an accessible manner. A good quality skill book in the bottom of a dusty box at a garage sale isn't worth much because most people don't know it's there. Take it out, clean it, identify it, and put it into an online store where people can find it easily from anywhere in the world, and suddenly it becomes valuable. Theoretically the previous owner could have done all that themselves, but they didn't - because it's work.
Our plan has always been to create an air bb homestead experience. My big concern now is all of the restrictions that have been placed on air bb. For example you can no longer do air bb on a property that you don't live in in some states. The reason for this makes sense. People come in to an area and but up inexpensive (to them) properties and then air bb the rooms. This takes housing options from the locals and increases rent in the area. People become homeless over it. So it is a good thing. I only plan to own the property that I live on and rent air bb on the property. My worry is that this will become even move strict and somehow prevent me from doing it after buying a property that I intend to pay for, with the air bb income. Is there anything I can do to be certain that I will be able to do air bb? I know some home loans won't allow it either.
I'd suggest talking to a lawyer, and maybe your local politicians. If you build something for the purpose of renting it out, and it's on your own property that you live on, then you are not harming other local people's ability to find accommodation. Make sure the politicians know you exist before they start making laws, and lobby them to make laws in such a way as to not stop people like yourself from bringing money into your region.
If they ban air bb anyway, then your best option is to rent out your new building as longer term accommodation. It's not as lucrative and there's a lot of very justified bad opinions about landlords, but you can choose to be a good landlord.
Title should be "how we afford having goats" none of this is homestead business lol

It's actually a little sad that you need to be quite tech savvy to make money from your homestead. I enjoyed the video, but with the exception of the Air BnB, the resale stuff and MAYBE the small kennel, you need to be on the computer A LOT.
Marketing is thousands of times easier online. Marketing local is required if you don't want to go online. Every business needs Marketing.
When hearing the word homestead I usually think of the homestead act of 1862 where people would get free land from the govt as long as they would make improvements to it.
I thought that to be a called a "homestead" it had to be part of the homestead act. But I looked up the word on the online etymology dictionary and it says: "Old English hamstede "home, town, village," from home (n.) + stead (q.v.). In U.S. use, "a lot of land adequate for the maintenance of a family" (1690s), defined by the Homestead Act of 1862 as 160 acres. Similar formation in Dutch heemstede, Danish hjemsted." So, according to that I can call my land a homestead as well.
Anyway, according to this video if you want to make money forget about home steading and become an influencer.
Only a small percentage of youtubers actually become successful and make profit. It can take years to make an income

Very interesting and very informative. I'm playing close attention to the new names for me (eg Facebook Marketplace, Amazon Affilliate Programme). Would it be a problem if, as suggested, the world transferrred over completely to digital money and only on-line money transfer and presentation of goods? And the Social Credit ID and Scoring? Your cup of tea? And choice? How would you decide what you are selling is worth. And the Home B&B. Especially if Travel becomes a problem. Perhaps you should go into depth on one or two side hussels.

so what money is actually coming from actually homesteading? seems that if this guy wasn't an internet influencer he wouldn't be living how he is. and I am not seeing why his homesteading class is any better than all of Austin's free videos. If this guy cant support himself homesteading then how am I to believe his course can teach me how. I think he would do better selling classes on internet influencing rather than homesteading. I appreciate the entrepreneurial spirit but I was hoping to learn homesteading income ideas. Gabe Brown has somewhere in the area of 17 business all are actually from homestead generated income. If this guy; as nice as he is, had to live off of homesteading alone, I get the feeling bills may not get paid and his life style would not be what it is. I guess in short the title is miss leading.

I find this whole video pretty interesting, since the guy being interviewed is pretty much doing everything you could do in the suburbs and not "Homesteading". Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for the guy / couple that they're making good money, but they could cut down number of chickens and just keep a couple of the goats as pets (petting zoo) and focus on doing an ABNB rental / "try homesteading" for Yuppies.

Ha! Pet goats, not sheep! Well we are far from Amish but we do have 15 chickens, 2 gardens and this year we started aquaponics indoor..we heat our entire home and water from firewood we harvest on our property. We have a long way to go but for me being a honesteader is being able to live and sustain 100% from my property without having to leave, work rely on thr man while trying to produce and eat from our property...and we've done that for 7 years now.. never had to leave. Our goats were dumb and I admit we have a long way to go..Go..but at this point I have a paid off 20 acre property with gardens, chickens, aquaponics and the property itself is paying for everything. I hope to do more homestead things with our freedom like get hogs and get solar. Thx

I will admit, not exactly homesteading. I will agree farming/homesteading is not a money maker, but it is about working on the ecology of a piece of land too and finding your ecological/economic niche. Also, if you don’t like animal chores/firewood side hustles/cleaning paddocks to make compost why are you out there.
will agree though, these ideas would be good for a hustle for my partner while I do the actual homesteading, I honestly don’t enjoy being in front of a screen a bunch and she’s more mainstream than me.
What l learned from this video that homsteading doesn't make you money... everything else can be done without homstead in the middle of manhattan
