It's funny, seeing you make the errors that I've seen new ground staff make on the real railway for years. Gives me a little chuckle to see that it happens here as well. The buffer-up at 13:00 is what I'm mostly referring to. Ordinarily, you'd stop 2ft away from the stationary set and then release the train brake. As the brake slowly rises (which doesn't really happen in the game, in real life you have to wait for the pressure to build. It won't even rise equally through the train, so as SOME of the wagons' brakes start to come off you make the move.), you give the train a shove onto the standing set as the brakes slowly start to release. When the buffers make contact, apply the train brake, but you keep some power on the locomotive and compress all the buffers very gently. Then you throw in the loco brake to hold everything in position and drop the power off.
You don't have to validate the job before preparing cars for departure. You could have easily saved a lot of time by preparing the cars for departure first and then starting those jobs - it still counts. Also job numbers from paperwork are also on cars so you don't have to visually check if you've got the right ones
I personally make the train ready, start moving and jump out of the engine, then validate the jobs and hop back on (yes this is not the safest methode and any railcompany who reads this will never hire me at all, but I saved time) sometimes I even hop off when arriving so I can set switches correctly, which is even worse haha
@@runawayfreak Relevant username! ...I do the same thing, when I know I'm in a "safe" spot (ie. No chance of going overspeed) I usually go up the line and set points, sometimes for the entire route and yard so I can just chill and enjoy the scenery in my caboose.
It actually says on the cars which job they belong to. The job number will be written on the car. This way you can be 100% sure which cars to attach and you can save a lot of time by attaching those cars before you hand in the job.
Fees and licensing has been reworked since this video, please see the dev's YT page for in-depth .. ( Just so you know ) Oh and they added a diesel top off at food and I think goods. *edit* - I forgot to mention that shops for harbor are more clearly marked on maps now.
I think my problem with this game is that in ETS2 you can whack music on and realistically cruise to your destination. You know your fuel, can cruise control the speed, know how to take the corners when you approach them and fatigue very rarely creeps up on you if you manage it beforehand. I can just switch off and it does my mental health wonders. With Derail Valley I could guarantee you that i'll either be on my side on a grass verge within 15 minutes, or i'll have beaten myself up over a shunting job that has given me a headache. Might have to stick with watching Squirrel handle it like a professional!
You can just put the game in casual difficulty to get more base money from the jobs and don't worry about the time bonus, and when you get the big diesel, its so powerful you don't have to worry about hills or overheating and just drive at like 40 all the way only slowing down for the real sharp turns, I did a 10 job haul to 3 yards yesterday and took me 2 and a half hours to complete it.
I love they way u show everything in such detail. Love ur work!

25 minutes in, gotta just say that one of the "most valuable things" on your channel is that you play the game in advance so you are not supsised by normal game mechanics. This is how i like "my" gameplay. Been watching you for years, dont know if i commented once. Have a good day:)
I agree. I've been getting annoyed with some of my other "regulars" lately, like Raptor, who seem more intent on just pumping out as many new games as possible and not bothering to even pay attention to what they are doing or how to play the game.
Indeed. I am sick to death of people who are only playing for the very first time, and their videos are nothing but 30 minutes of them making mistakes.
Thanks, Squirrel! I got Derail Valley on watching this video. As you say at about 36 minutes in, it's not the gfx but actual gameplay which makes this such a great game. It is fun and gets you thinking like a RL shunter or Yard Supervisor, thinking about what wagons go where for the train journey etc. There is far more to the railway than often seems apparent!
No way I'm taking this job without the remote. One of the best things in the game - makes the whole shunting job so much more fun. I even use it for trains of only 4 or 5 cars.
Someone was saying, in Twitch chat, that you can hook up and move cars before actually picking up the job. Obviously you can't leave with them, you won't be able to validate the job, but you can set it up so you can just drive out right after picking up the job.
on the station map the coloring underneath the yard letter (like B yard at harbor has the green under it) means the type of yard, green is Military, Yellow/Orange is general freight and blue is passenger station, also, when starting on a hill (11:00) you ALWAYS throttle up before releasing the brakes, that is standard hill start procedure. Another thing is that you can "safely" go through every corner in the game somewhere around 10-15 over without issues
This game looks like a great pathological perfectionism trigger. At first I would be all "ahhh! The outdoors! Looks so relaxing!" then it slowly turns into "WHY DID I START THAT HILL AT 49.3 MPH INSTEAD OF PRECISELY 50 NOW I HAVE TO MAKE MY ENGINE GO INTO THE YELLOW"
You should try to use mostly the independent brake to arrest your speed rather than the train brake, and only use the train brake a little to supplement the independent brake. The train brake takes very long time to release after you apply it so if you over apply it, you'll lose a huge amount of speed. When coming down that particular hill near the Harbour I always use 1-2 notches of train brake to keep the speed from getting out of control and then fine tune it with the independent brake. It's a lot easier to control your speed like that.
the loco brake slows you more gradual, now if the devs implement brake fatigue and fade you wont be able to use the independent brake solely you'll burn up the brakes then you'll have a runaway on your hands.
Here is a tip I use Squirrel. First get the locomotive your going to use then go and attach the cargo cars your going to haul, have it all set and ready then go turn in the job packets so your timer starts then and there as oppose to wasting time setting up ! Time is money my friend! Great videos!!
Ehm.. Squirrel, on the job Paper in the upper right corner, there is a letter / number combination. The same combination is on the waggons where the serial of the waggon is. You don't need to assume which job it is you are looking for when you look for the jobnumber.
I just started playing this in VR over this past weekend, and it's crazy awesome. :) The interactivity and sense of immersion is really good and very addictive. It's one of those "just one more job" kind of games.
The S tracks will always have something on them. The only type of jobs you can expect to be empty or to be occupied only by the consist you're supposed to move are on O and I tracks
45:48 I'm no wizened old railroader, but diving in to uncouple cars attached to a still-moving train seems like something they'd show you in a yard safety training video.
I think that despite it not having the best graphics it transmits the right feel ! It feels like a real railway, and as such, it looks rather like a small idyllic island which in turn, makes it look quite beautiful. Something other Simulations do fail!
I like to hook up a second de2 either in the middle of the train between jobs or at the end and I set the air off and reverser in neutral. When I get to my drop off location I fire the other shunter up. This allows me to break apart the jobs quicker and if you're really fast with the teleport simultaneously drive them two separate locations of the yard.
One trick you can do before you get the remote is to use the brake valves on the ends of the cars to hold the train while you're coupling up. Leave the hoses undone, open the valve on the "active" part of the train to dump the air and put the train brakes on, then do up the coupling, attach the hoses and align the valves as normal. You can also set the train rolling from the engine when you're shunting, then go to the rearmost car and use the valve to set and release the brakes to slow down or stop, just open the valve for a second or two to apply some brake, shut it again to release. The longer you leave it open, the more air you let go, the stronger the brakes come on and the longer it takes to release. Takes a little practice, but you can have some pretty fine control that way, just don't forget to cut the power before you jump off the loco.
I've had Derail Valley on my wishlist and follow list on Steam for a while now, but never really looked into footage beyond what the store page shows. Today I watched your "Overhauled" video and then this one, and I think I'm going to be buying this game. Usually I wait for a sale, or at least for a game to leave Early Access, but.. this is the exact sort of gameplay I always wished Rolling Line had. Thank you, Squirrel!
pro tip always make sure the train brake is hooked up even when doing yard work, i dont know if the game works like this but in real life if you dont check in your train come to a stop after about an hour of "absence" and if your train is under power the independent will not be enough to stop it, it will help if you have a runaway train
The second shop item bought was the remote. Best 25K I have ever spent! Keep at it, you'll get good. I did derail my shunter and a few wagons a couple of time (4 actually). This game is hard to master but so much rewarding. Too bad for TSW 2020.
You know already you can see the job register (right-up code, lettering and the also the car register) I believe, doing that, you prepare everything, really, couple everything and put the hole consist ready to go and just validate when you´re leaving. And again when you starting the game without remote-control, when you shunting and preparing, you can brake a long consist by opening the last car valve little bits ( you get the hang of it by training) so it´s killer faster to beat time very easy. have fun;
What I'd like to see is unfitted goods jobs. The caboose/brake-van would come into its own with these since you'd need to rely on the handbrake in the brakevan and on the wagons to stop the train from running away down steep slopes. So you'd have to stop before a downhill section, pin on some of the handbrakes on the wagons and then work with the handbrake and loco brake to control your speed. It would also open up the potential for fly/hump shunting, where you decouple the wagon, and then push it up to speed with your locomotive, slam your loco brakes on and the wagon carries on into the siding, you then have to run after it and put the brakes on before it slams into another wagon and derails. Would add a whole new level of difficulty for the game.
You should have coupled the car racks first behind the locomotive. So when you get to where you need to set them down, you stop the train with the junction you need to change under the car wagons, uncouple from the container flats and roll forward to clear the junction, then change and propel back into the siding where you're dropping off the car racks, that way you aren't wrestling with the entire mass of the train as you reverse and try to neatly stop, you're only pushing around the mass you absolutely need to.
The approach to playing this game is like being a pilot in real life. First you make a flight plan and get your weather briefing, then you pre-flight your airplane and check equipment, then finally you hop in and fly.
So... I've seen quite a lot around the Derail community say you can't make it out of Harbor and Town carrying over 400 tons with the Shunter loco... I'd like to say that you can actually because I pulled 457 tons with 1 shunting Loco up the hill towards steel mill to get to Goods factory... took 1/4 tank of sand but once I had enough friction, you can cruise around 45-50 km/h and have enough power to do it despite 57 tons overweight. I hauled in a nice 60k in profit from the 2 jobs lol
There's a fan u can turn on that will help with cooling the DE2 shunter, and if you are travelling under 14kmh, you can bump rail cars without doing damage. also the cars only have to be past the junctions to be on the track, not between the signs
In one of the last videos he said that he asked the developers about the fan switch and they said that the switch doesn't do anything. Maybe they patched that in the meantime but in the version he currently plays the switch does nothing.
Hey Squirrel! There is a mod on Nexus Mod that's super lightweight called "Dispatcher" and it basically shows you what cars are on what lines, similar to the tutorial blue line style. Really helpful! Love the content! ♥
A good recommendation for the next update would be for a distance counter like we have in the States on our locos. Press the button and it starts counting the distance the front end has traveled so you know when the rear clears a speed restriction or switch.
I realise this is a bit of a late comment- but you can easily and accurately identify the consist that you want to take, before handing the job in for validation. The job number (ie. GF-LH-76) will also be on the carriage identification plate, so you can actually hook up the entire consist, and get it moving in the correct direction for departure, then validate the job to maximise the chances of getting the time bonus
Hey Squirrel, just as a heads up: if you want to move the loads around and hook them all up before you start the clock on the jobs you can do, as long as you stay in the yard. I tried this myself and it didn't reduce the payout. Food for thought, mate ;)
Just done a shunt job that was only 4 flatbeds to be loaded for outgoing, but it involved 2 flatbeds together with a different job in the way, 1 separate flatbed with 2 different jobs in the way and the last 1 was in a siding on it's own. I moved everything out of the way and put all four in the loading bay before hitting the validator to start the job. Apparently the 36 minute job only took me 5 minutes to finish and get the bonus!
Railway sand is fine, and kiln-dried. If it's wet at all, it'll get stuck in the pipes. I do not know how much the stuff actually costs, but it's definitely not your standard garden-filler grade! :)
for the incline/decline think like this, the LEFT side is where you start (at the sign) and the Right is where you will end up.. if the left is lower, you are going UP, if the Left is higher, you are going DOWN
Yellow=Up Red=Down Simpler and much better to see at a distance. By the time you would be able to see the dividing line and angle you could read the sign normally anyway. This works better.
this is where you learn the difference between logistic jobs and freight jobs, freight jobs are simple a to b jobs, logistic jobs are a to b then shunting on top!
I'm sure you've heard this before, look at the job number in the top right of the job paper, and then look on the bottom right of the plate on the wagon. That's how you identify what the job is before accepting it. Also how to identify where one job ends and the next begins without looking at the papers for wagon numbers.
Ive been doing alot of concurrent jobs in this lately and luckly more often then not my whole consist goes into the same siding.... its just that siding is either too short or already occupied so i either have to punt the current stock out so it over hangs the yard so my stuff fits or relocate it... it can be a bit annoying at times lmao
I'm glad this game can be played in 2D as well as VR. My office is cluttered due to the Work At Home BS, so I haven't been able to play VR in months :(
So yesterday I took my first trip to the harbour, after I saw this video. This allowed me to navigate much better the port area itself. However, did not help me much for the route because I was starting from the Food Factory. So I did the corkscrew but arrived on top with my engine (DE2) too hot. The train was only ~180 tons. So I am wondering if I can take that route with a heavier train (interesting contract with ~300 tonnes). Maybe I could use two DE2s...
I recommend you don’t use the train brake very much at all. The pressure takes a substantial amount of time to release, and for even the longest and heaviest consists you’ll have with that shunter, the independent will almost always suffice with considerably more control.
I get a laugh at how you were saying 14 cars is a really long train! My first freight haul from the harbor was 71 cars. Took 3 De6's to handle the tonnage. MU Diesel mod. I can see though, for one of your little videos you wouldn't want to spend two or three days shunting to prepare that many different loads
awesome thank you i was wondering about double jobs if it can be done thank you look forward to watching your other vids on this i just bought the game
Good work as usual though the shunters are kinda dull to watch. The 2-8-2 would allow you to haul heavier loads while being more fun to watch. The steamer is this games party piece. Love watching your vids!
Nice run. I assume you recorded this before update 81?. In that they changed quite a few things to make it more clear that early game it's actually better to remotely repair/fuel as in that case the copay picks up part of the bill. To be even more efficient: ditch the loco at the destination and grab another for the next job, repeat until you are required to pay fees before any more jobs can be accepted. Then you pay the fees on all locos at once at the office and only pay the copay amount...
It might have been quicker to have the empty cars up front stopped before the points unhooked the box cars pulled forward the switched points then backed in the shorter train uncoupled, turned in job the hook up the box cars then carried on.
Of course, that's much easier to do with either the shunting remote or an actual shunter on the ground.
Nice insight there, thanks :D

In one of the last videos he said that he asked the developers about the fan switch and they said that the switch doesn't do anything.
Maybe they patched that in the meantime but in the version he currently plays the switch does nothing.
Hey Squirrel! There is a mod on Nexus Mod that's super lightweight called "Dispatcher" and it basically shows you what cars are on what lines, similar to the tutorial blue line style. Really helpful! Love the content! ♥
If you coast the engine, you can brake from the end of the train by releasing the brake valve, letting the air out of the brakes.
A good recommendation for the next update would be for a distance counter like we have in the States on our locos. Press the button and it starts counting the distance the front end has traveled so you know when the rear clears a speed restriction or switch.
that would be a nice gadget! I recommend you mention that to the devs somewhere. I'm sure they'll pick it up.
Must be Sand® by Apple.
iSand
If my loco was overheating that easily I’d be calling maintenance then boiling the kettle
Yea, He knows that now. He does it in the streams now
Just done a shunt job that was only 4 flatbeds to be loaded for outgoing, but it involved 2 flatbeds together with a different job in the way, 1 separate flatbed with 2 different jobs in the way and the last 1 was in a siding on it's own.
My Winter Car is in development - I can't wait to watch you play it!
for the incline/decline think like this, the LEFT side is where you start (at the sign) and the Right is where you will end up..
if the left is lower, you are going UP, if the Left is higher, you are going DOWN
Yellow=Up
Red=Down
Simpler and much better to see at a distance. By the time you would be able to see the dividing line and angle you could read the sign normally anyway.
This works better.
Love your Vids man
Keep uploading such wonderful Videos
this is where you learn the difference between logistic jobs and freight jobs, freight jobs are simple a to b jobs, logistic jobs are a to b then shunting on top!
I'm sure you've heard this before, look at the job number in the top right of the job paper, and then look on the bottom right of the plate on the wagon. That's how you identify what the job is before accepting it. Also how to identify where one job ends and the next begins without looking at the papers for wagon numbers.
Soon as you left I thought wait shouldn't you hook it up before active job not after to save time
Ive been doing alot of concurrent jobs in this lately and luckly more often then not my whole consist goes into the same siding.... its just that siding is either too short or already occupied so i either have to punt the current stock out so it over hangs the yard so my stuff fits or relocate it... it can be a bit annoying at times lmao
I'm glad this game can be played in 2D as well as VR. My office is cluttered due to the Work At Home BS, so I haven't been able to play VR in months :(
Must be some kinda "Self-Lubricating" sand at that price
On the signals, you can shoot the red flag at the top. Bigger target and it's red.
I coupled 3x long II jobs together and it was going well until I ran out of water. Now I have a big mess to clean up.
Fun fact: D2 locomotive in this game is inspired a little bit by the C30-M locomotive.
check the cars. the job number is on there so you can organize you consist before you take the job.
Shops are usually around the passenger stop.
My summer car
Squirrel is so much better at this game than me I got lost in the harbor and was so stressed because I was in VR so I got much more tired a lot faster
Honestly the graphics are still pretty good on this game
0:43 - Says load weighs 138t. Shows second load weighing 120t. Says 120t is more than 138t. 👍
"This is quite a long train" I did 40 wagons on 4 jobs. THAT was a long train, heavy too.
I recommend you don’t use the train brake very much at all. The pressure takes a substantial amount of time to release, and for even the longest and heaviest consists you’ll have with that shunter, the independent will almost always suffice with considerably more control.
Can’t wait till they release more trains
this in coop would be amazing
I get a laugh at how you were saying 14 cars is a really long train! My first freight haul from the harbor was 71 cars. Took 3 De6's to handle the tonnage. MU Diesel mod. I can see though, for one of your little videos you wouldn't want to spend two or three days shunting to prepare that many different loads
The snowrunner update is coming on the 9th of june btw. Looking forward towards the stream!
awesome thank you i was wondering about double jobs if it can be done thank you look forward to watching your other vids on this i just bought the game
Wow Thanks for all your wonderful videos ❤️🙏
You know what I'd do on Derail Valley? Two jobs at the same time.
Next part coming soon please? Thanks for the content.
Im still looking for proper maps. I have trouble finding the office and refuel(service) point.
Good work as usual though the shunters are kinda dull to watch. The 2-8-2 would allow you to haul heavier loads while being more fun to watch. The steamer is this games party piece. Love watching your vids!
I have been watching your other stream where you already have the de6 and the remote. I thought as in a time warp for a second.
He gets in the train at 6:25
It might have been quicker to have the empty cars up front stopped before the points unhooked the box cars pulled forward the switched points then backed in the shorter train uncoupled, turned in job the hook up the box cars then carried on.
hi, can you play some more my summer car please.
Also My winter car is in the making. :)
13:05 :D :D :D lol
If I had derail valley and I was on a straight piece of track I’d Flor it
Train sim world 2 has been announced to be released on 6 August 2020
i have the remote... i love it. very handy
Ok I need to make a "Squirrel Logistics" DE-6 skin for you.
If you're 90% sure which wagons you want, could you not arrange the consist before handing in jobs at all?
Hay squirrel when do we expect to see more my summer car and congrats and the channel been watching for a long time and loving your content
The sand was very cheap until they decided to start using it to make computer chips.
This game reminds me of Thomas the Train it is quite nice
Would be nice if they had a 2 player co-op.
