    Pro tip relevant to 15:10 in the video: look at the top right corner of the job page. You'll see that there is a job number, in this case it is SM-FH-98. If you want to more easily find which consist belongs to this job, that same job number is also posted on the side of the car next to the car's information like the car number and freight type. Makes it so much easier than trying to figure out which consist is the one you want by visuals alone, and faster since you can hook up to the consist before accepting the job, making it even easier to reach the destination before the bonus deadline.

    When you uncouple make sure you release the brake pressure from the cars by opening the valve for a few seconds so next time you try to couple them they won't roll away.

  • @jvp3640
    @jvp3640 4 года назад +9

    Have been playing this for the last few days, and it's great fun.
    There's a third option for moving things like the throttle and brakes, point at the lever and roll mouse wheel. Also you'd often want to use the independent brakes rather than train brake. The independent is much quicker to release.
    As for the job types: Shunting usually involves either loading or offloading cars. Freight hauls is (supposed to) always be straight runs from an -O track to an empty -I track. Logistics Hauls are driving between -S (Storage) tracks, but usually involves some light shunting to either get the right wagons or to make room for them at the destination.

  • @MidnightmoonRR
    @MidnightmoonRR 4 года назад +8

    Shunting jobs have always been my favorite jobs. I dont know why, but I absolutely love the logistics of moving cars around a yard, building trains ect.

  • @b0bsaget007

    Minor derp at 11:21 in the video: the 'Unload and Store' shunting jobs will create more Logistical Haul jobs, while the 'Load and Prepare' shunts will generate a Freight Haul job.

    • @b0bsaget007
      @b0bsaget007 4 года назад +3

      Also at 46:38, from my own experience, you are actually NOT required to uncouple before submitting the job. You can still submit the job while the consist is attached to the loco. Makes it easier if you decide to do the shunting job for that consist immediately afterwards.

    • @milanstevic8424
      @milanstevic8424 4 года назад +1

      @@b0bsaget007 it used to be that it wouldn't accept the job. it wouldn't register the consist as 'delivered'. that has probably changed in the update.

  • @johnsmithton292
    @johnsmithton292 4 года назад +1

    The bottom right corner of the wagon placard has the job it is assigned to on it. For instance, your job number was SM-FH-98 in this case. If you look at the placard with the container ID number on it you will see that number in the bottom right. That helps if you are looking for a job in the middle of a bunch of wagons. Also helps you cheat and get shunting consists built prior to accepting a job.

    29:28 I much prefer getting the big overview showing everything done smoothly initially, then going over the individual steps in details later. To me it's more important to know the big picture first, so I understand how each of the pieces fit the puzzle when they get a deeper explanation later. If you start out with in-depth explanations it's much more likely I'd start questioning why are we doing this again and drop off.

    You can use the hotkey locomotive controls while standing on the shunters footplate above the buffers(anywhere on the locomotive). Really useful for shunting to see how far you are from the cars you are trying to connect with. Also you can throw cars by releasing the brakes and then closing the brake pipe and releasing the coupling. I usually hop onto car being thrown and ride it into the siding and controling the speed with the brake pipes. However with that being said the brakes dont regenerate. So when you tap the brake pipe you are releasing the air that wont come back unless you are connected to a locomotive. It can be very efficient and cutt back on time for easy bonus money.

    Important to note: You can repair a locomotive at any service location, if you’re at a Steam service you can repair a diesel and give it sand but not refuel it and the same for Steamers at Diesel Service Stations. Also sometimes if you’re too far from a refueling station for Diesels (like at Food Factory, Sawmill or either of the lumber yards) sometimes it’s better to just pay the fee to refuel it than go refuel it yourself.

    The MU mod is awesome. Allows you to use multiple locomotives for added horsepower.
    Also you can "kick" cars in this by charging up the brake pipes, closing the valves and unloosening the coupler and when you apply the loco brake the cars will keep decouple and keep rolling into the desired siding

  • @Renard380

    As of the current update you can drive locomotives in multiple unit. Also at the steel mill you used the turntable to change direction but there was also the possibility to use the triangle at the other side of the yard. This also allows you to change direction with much longer trains if needed.

    Great tutorial! got this game (early) for xmas and really excited to play! Very thorough intro/overview, I didn't find it too long at all. Never bored. A little intimidating maybe, but I have 800 hrs on Euro Truck so I guess I can invest some time in trains :-) It sure looks like Euro Truck on rails -- except the map seems small by comparison and doesn't correspond to any IRL railway? That would be a super cool "one day" future version, if it actually used real rail maps in real countries. Anyway, diving in tonight after watching your excellent tute.

    I throw the ones I cannot do off of the table too!
    Technically it's Long Trains I copay +3000, Concurrent Jobs I +9000. I got them both backwards too... found out after I bought it... realized I should print it to double check first.
    That right after B section, it would have set you up to back into D. Goods Factory has always had that (since I joined EA, anyways), and since you have a way to turn the whole train around, there's no turn table there. Doesn't make much difference if you're just doing a drop (from drop and hook, CDL term, don't know the train equiv), but it'll help if you plan on shunting it after.
    Your stream was so cringy... this video was so much better.

    One thing I've noticed about unity games is a lot of them, especially indies/ones with small dev teams (this, My Summer Car, House Flipper, etc) just _look_ like Unity games. I can't tell you how I know but there are some games that, within minutes of playing, I know they're Unity. I can't actually describe what makes them look that way, they just all have this samey look about them that I recognize. Anyway, cool game but it seems like one of those games where I'd rather watch someone else play them rather than play myself. So, more videos, Squirrel!

    I immensely enjoy this game since the update.
    Few things I noticed that were left out or incorrect:
    - Do not turn the loco off for short amounts, turning it on wears down the engine each time.- Never abandon a non-serviced loco at the station. It will despawn if you go too far away but the fees stay, you're then forced to pay the 2x fees at the career manager.- You have to pay for the emissions too, this is done at the career manager and can't be avoided but doesn't has the 2x penalty.
    - The green light at service stations only appears if the parts are in good condition. Listen for the "ding" sound instead.- To operate the levers at service stations with the mouse drag efficiently, look at them from the side instead of the front.- Fueling a loco while it's running is an impressive display of it's fuel consumption.
    - For 5 cars or less, full independent brake application is usually sufficient to slow down fast enough unless you push the speed limit very hard. It will not accumulate wheel damage either and is much more agile to work with.- The loco will not decelerate on it's own when the throttle is released. If it does, you didn't wait long enough for the pressure to come up. It's really slow towards the end in the shunter and will never actually reach full pressure like it does in the steam train. Revving the engine will not make it go up faster either.- For anyone interested, the shunter top speed is 70 unless you go downhill.- Once you get to the speed you want, reduce the throttle or you burn loads fuel for nothing. Fuel consumption currently mostly depends on the lever position and not how much that position accomplishes.- Hotkeys are already mapped by default from F1 to F8, as well as some letters. The document you get at the beginning lists them. The default bindings also include keys for the water injector and fire doors on the steamer which is incredibly useful for keyboard players.- When taking a job you should not only make sure that you don't haul too many cars, but also make sure you don't haul too few. Sometimes the cars are touching but are not actually coupled.- If you completely screw up a job you can toss it into the bin at any station office to essentially cancel it so you can take another one
    - You do not need to uncouple cars for the job to validate. As long as they're completely on the destination track and stationary the job will complete, even if the loco is still running.- You can control the career manager with the mouse wheel and both buttons left=ok, right=cancel.- Fees in the career manager update live, in case you want to see the running cost of an idling loco.
    - Clicking on stations on the map allows you to teleport for a fee.- The red house icon in the center of the map is your home. It's also connected to the lost and found shed.- Every shop (blue icons) sells one unique item. You used to buy items at the station office but now it's a blue, small building.- If you have trouble finding the station office you can look at the station map. It's indicated where it approximately is.
    - I've found some of the best paying jobs on the harbor. A single Hazmat 1 + Long 2 job can easily pay 60k if you make it within the given time frame.- You generally don't have to rush. Driving between 40 and 50 (unless the limit is lower) all the time even without doing any preparations is usually sufficient.- You can operate track switches by hand now if you want.

  • @bobingabout
    @bobingabout 4 года назад

    "If you take more than 400 tonnes, chances are you're going to get stuck." Once, not only did I accept a job of over 600 tonnes, but I did 2 of those, plus 2 other jobs, my train was over 1600 tonnes in total... I needed to go around the map and gather a total of 5 shunters and bring them to my train in order to pull it. On top of that, my lead engine was facing the wrong way. What had a time limit of about an hour, took over 2.
    Even though I got no bonus, I did get A LOT of money, as both of those 600+ tonne jobs were something like 30k each, and although I was using 5 shunters, I only needed them all to go up hill, on a prominently down hill route, so most of the time I was only using 1 or 2, so the fees were probably only double what they would have been doing the journey on a single engine.

    Alright, I'm 15min into the video right now and I'm utterly impressed about how they've thrown just a few game mechanics into the game that sound like they beautifully incorporate the derailing / physics mechanics of this game and it sounds really fun. Everything seems to connect like a spiderweb of good mechanics and reasonable limitations.
    I'm not a train guy but I enjoy machinery on a theoretical and operational level and I'm genuinely considering throwing cash at the devs to try it out for myself. It really sounds like a brilliant game now, not just a cool tech-gimmick or demo.

    • @milanstevic8424
      @milanstevic8424 4 года назад

      that stutter is either station job- and asset-spawning going all at once (thus: a relatively easy fix) or some messy garbage cleaning under the hub (the actual terminology for automatic releasing of the unused blocks of memory ought to be recycled). it's a normal thing (though obviously not desired) after a huge batch of features, especially when working with unity C# (garbage cleaning is a language feature and developers have almost zero direct control over it), and will probably get smoother after some quality of life updates, as they investigate further into the matter, and better optimize their internal memory management. sometimes, it's the third party assets that are the culprits for this sort of behavior, if that's the case they have absolutely no way to avoid such artifacts, and will have to defer such annoyances until the very end of development. I am sure they will prioritize the issue though, given it's a VR title.

    Just a few minor corrections/tips:
    The job number is listed on every car associated with a particular job. The individual car numbers are irrelevant outside of shunting jobs where you brake down a larger consist which is the unloading ones.
    You will not (at present) find cars for two different jobs physically connected to one another. They may sit on the same siding, but unless the players hooks them together they are separate consists.
    Moving a job outside of the job starting area without accepting it first will cause it to be invalidated and will no longer be accepted by the job validator.
    When doing shunting jobs I strongly suggest moving the consist for the job you are planning on taking to the appropriate loading/unloading zone before actually accepting the job. Saves precious minutes off of the time needed to complete the job. Watchout for the Steelmill though. It is really easy to accidently push a job outside of the allowed area and invalidate the job because of where the unloading/loading zone is compared to the rest of the yard.
    When planning on taking multiple jobs, attach them all together and wait until the air pressure is maxed out prior to acctually accepting the job. The game doesn't give you any extra time to assemble the different jobs together, nor to take them apart when you reach your destination. By putting them together before you accept them you save yourself an enormous amount of time. Again watch out for the Steelmill.
    With the little teleport function it is actually fairly easy to manage multiple DE2s without the remote. I had a pretty heavy consist coming out of Harbor Town headed for Goods Factory (mostly uphill). I started with three DE2s and ended up having to add a fourth to even get out of the Harbor. Made it to Goods Factory without incident, though didn't get the time bonus on all of the consist.
    DE2s are speed limited on the first three throttle positions. 1st is 10, 2nd is 20, 3rd is 30. The third throttle position is the last one where the engine won't begin to overheat.
    Be careful with using the train brake vs the engine brake. Both put ware and tare on the engine, but the train brake applies brakes on all of the cars and depletes the brake resevoir. This cost prescious time if you fully apply the train brake as you engine now has to fill the entire consist and resevoir before you can really get moving again.
    Above all have fun playing the game! Its a blast to play even as a mouse and keyboard user.

    Guys be careful, not all speed limit signs have been placed yet. I have went down into the drinks from a tall mountain doing the supposed speed limit the other day, and I was absolutely furious :D
    This is especially true near the City SW area.

    When u decouple the cars let the air out of them to let the brakes lock on because they can roll away if u bump into them

    Provided my computer can handle the game, I'm sold. Picking this up for sure!
    EDIT: Purchased the game and have already put 8 hours in this weekend. This game is amazingly fun, and I already have a handful of tales from my trips, such as the time I learned that not all stations have fuel, leading to my loco running on fumes halfway through a run, and the time I underestimated the tonnage on a job, leading to me chaining 3 shunters together on a long-haul trip!
    Can't wait to see what else happens! (Thinking about picking up the remote and trying to run a DPU on a heavy train next.)
