    If you're studying Mandarin and are struggling with your speaking skills, our free newsletter will share exactly what you need to do to become fluent. Subscribe to the newsletter above and we'll also send you our eBook, *Lessons from a Chinese Learning Phenomenon*, explaining how we taught ourselves to speak fluent Chinese from outside Chinese-speaking countries. And how you can too!
    In this video I'm starting my 3 part anki series. I explain the concept of sentence mining, how to start sentence mining and a quick introduction to anki. This method is one of the main reasons I was able to learn mandarin quite fast and I still use it now to continue to improve everyday. Hope it's useful for you guys. Thanks for watching !

    I'm a Mandarin student, and usually cannot follow along with the conversation. Thank you for speaking at a relaxed level, and for adding both hanzi and the English translation. I'm a big fan of yours, and have learned a lot from your interviews.

    I'm finally switching to clozed delete cards. I've used sentence reading and some listening Anki cards for over 10 years now with languages with some success with Japanese but Korean not so much. I basically thought "production" cards were too hard and I had this idea that increasing my passive vocabulary would increase my ability to consume content which would have a snowball effect eventually resulting in a good active vocabulary too. If you think about it, reading Japanese (and probably Chinese) is kind of half production since it's not a proper alphabet. So the Japanese cards were ok but maybe not perfect. I'm wondering if I had been more diligent with clozed delete it would have gone better. I will probably never know. But for Korean which has an alphabet and I've been studying for going on 4 years I don't think the sentence/vocab reading cards are anywhere near aggressive enough. I'm struggling to speak at all to my online tutors but I've really been pretty decent at studying the past few years. I think if I keep taking online lessons the human interaction will slowly (emphasis on slowly) get me able to output but I tried switching up my Anki cards and even after just a few days I'm having really good results. This is likely because even though I was struggling after 4 years, I still had 4 years of studying behind me so there is information deep in my brain but I just need to change things up to make it active. I'm basically studying vocabulary I can recognize already but couldn't remember when speaking so these fill in the blank flash cards seem to click really well as compared to before when I tried it with brand new vocabulary.
    Anyway, I wanted to comment in case someone else were watching this video but had seen other videos advocating just sentence/vocab reading flash cards instead. I think the clozed delete ones while more difficult are the way to go. If they seem way harder than they should be then maybe it's not a good word/phrase/sentence (probably). And also, especially if you're a beginner, you probably want to take it slow adding new words. And lastly, you're building your active vocabulary here. Words you can actively recall. You can likely increase your passive vocabulary just looking up stuff as needed without making Anki cards for them.

      Really good points, I think there is a big difference in active vocabulary and passive vocabulary and with a language like Chinese I think it is unlikely that 'recognition' based flashcards and input alone will lead to improvements in output quickly. Production cards are hard but worth the effort I think!

    Hi Will, what’s your thoughts on vocab cards? If I didn’t read for example but only watch television do you think I can get fluent with vocab cards?

    • @willhartmandarin
      @willhartmandarin  4 месяца назад

      I make vocab cards for really easy nouns when I already have a decent vocabulary, but I would probably recommend sentence cards + TV and then only use vocab cards for really easy words.

    Is Anki supposed to be free or paid for? After about a week of using my app, the speaking feature stopped working and the app wants me to sign up for a monthly membership.... Also, on the app store there seem to be many anki versions. Do you have a recommendation? Lastly, do you have anki decks you made to share? 谢谢

      Personally, I use Anki for characters/pinyin. Duolingo was the first thing I tried to learn Chinese... never again.
      Also, you might want to look up Hit Chinese for pronunciation, it's a great channel.
