- The composer whose music was first to make the biggest impression upon the young Rubinstein was not Chopin but Brahms. Rubinstein first heard the music of Brahms when he was about thirteen. On pages 33 and 34 of his memoirs My Young Years, he writes, "It is impossible to describe my enthusiasm as I heard this music----From that day on, Brahms became my obsession. I had to know everything he had written. I would read with ecstasy anything of Brahms which fell into my hands. I would buy his music on credit; I would have stolen money to get it!" There is no other composer that Rubinstein mentions in his memoirs that he describes with such fervor. However, it is interesting to note that considering the near completeness of his recordings of Chopins works, Rubinstein only recorded four complete solo piano compositions of Brahms. They are Op. 5, Op. 10, Op. 79 and Op. 117.
One of the greatest and most beautiful things that catch me when I listen to some of these extraordinary pianists is their "dryness". It seems they do ev'rything so naturally and with so little emphasys.. and yet.. they're so deep and expressive..
Beautifully played, and one of Brahms's finest pieces. I especially enjoy the clarity of the lyrical passages, the long line of the dynamic planning, and, very tricky in this piece, his way of making the agitato sections sound completely pianistic and urgent. Beautiful!
cant even come close to the emotions you have when you play it... this was my favourite piece back on my piano days...
I love the long line, the gentle rubato, and the felted tone.
Rubinstein's Brahms, imo, was every bit as good as his Chopin. When he played either composer, it was with total conviction. In the moment of listening, you feel he has found the way the music HAD to be.
An illusion, no doubt ... other pianists had their own things to say, often equally valid.
But that ability to bring the listener into identification with HIS emotion, HIS phrasing, HIS way of breathing was Rubinstein's special gift.
Nobody approaches Rubinstein in Brahms. He has the rich base and singing melodies combined with perfect tempo. The nearest contenders would be Kappell and Giles.
Yes! He sits absolutely still; just look at him! ;-)
Nous vous remercions pour vos commentaires perspicaces.
You can hear times were hard on him back then...
Even more so with the g minor, imo.
They understood that the music would become a cheesy mockery if they exaggerated things, only in special instances.
P)oor interpretation. This piece is difficult.
horrible!!! je trouve ça maniéré, il y a des fautes, le même son dans chaque partie... Cela dit, c'est mieux que la version d'Hélène Grimaud qui est franchement indécente.
