Danke 🎹. A very few times is gut to hear another pianist than Claudio Arrau. This pianist is amazing , is not Arrau , but he captures the soul of Brhams nature . What else ? ☕ 👏👏👏👏👏
Yes, I agree. I ‘ve been captivated by late Brahms so much that I played Brahms only for 2 years, starting with Op 118 and then 116, 117 & 119. I just couldn’t stop learning them. I eventually attended live concert of these beautiful poems played by G.Sokolov in Vienna, Austria in December 2019. My bucket list dream was fulfilled.
These Brahms's late piano pieces are brief but with many content. For moments I find so deepness that it gives me goosebumps. Autumnal Brahms to his best. Thank you!
These are really very good performances of these fine works. Generally faster tempi than you might encounter elsewhere, but not unreasonably so, and maintaining an admirable clarity and variety of tone colour throughout. Above all, though, the pianist really makes sense of the works and communicates that clearly. I've heard many recordings by top tier pianists, and played many of the works myself, but more than once I had an "ah, that's what it means" moment when listening to these.
Its actually the right tempo, just everybody else plays it too slowly, fox example p.116: Intermezzo in A Minor: Andante is a piece that is heavily influenced by Hungarian and Gyspie music and requires this tempo while most of the performances display it as an early modernist Debussy like Intermezzo witch is a technically wrong interpretaTION.
Thank you, thank you thank you BC for this quite marvellous collection of Brahms. The pianist was unknown to me but he/she played these somewhat differently from my memory and expectation of them, but beautifully. A few of them were new to me. I have really got to like Brahms more and more as I have aged!

I am not a musician, just a lover of Brahms's music, and this is a recording I would gladly add to my collection. These are beautifully played. A brief note on this: "The 3 Intermezzi are reflective, deeply personal works. Op. 118 contains severe technical demands for the performer, as well as music of incredible passion and sadness. Op. 119 contains a Rhapsody, which is widely regarded as a final tribute to his pianist friend Clara Schumann. Brahms was madly in love with her, but although they were great friends, his love went unrequited." The acclaimed Brahms biographer Jan Swafford would disagree. He tells us in "Johannes Brahms: A Biography" (1999) that his love for Clara was very much requited, but that for reasons too complicated to relate here, they never married. Brahms of course remained a lifelong bachelor.
No mystery here, he later acknowledged that he was impotent. No doubt especially once he started stacking on the weight, and cigars/drinking wouldn't have helped. Do they ever?
@@williamdiffin28 People are always going to be curious about anomalies in the lives of famous artists they admire. No harm done in raising such questions or answering them. Clara and Johannes are beyond being embarrassed by such curiosity, wherever they are now.
Brahms is much more higher than Schumann and Chopin, the late works of his touches upon the metaphysical, the melancholy is of Weltschmerz, of the Cosmic mind, but Schumann cannot get out his humanistic romantic world, there are true emotions, still they are human emotions, not divine feelings, and Chopin is lower than Schumann in that it is mostly a showup of human weak mind: sadness, regret, ambition, nostalgia, merriness, heroism, etc., there is no true determination as Brahms has, not a true man with conviction and mission in life.
@@vijinanadu1962 In essence I agree with you, but I don't think fragile human emotion is any less powerful than big cosmic narratives. There is a place for both.
@@calebhu6383 the world has levels, Brahms is for selected few, and Chopin is more sentimental, so is Tchaikovsky, they indulge themselves in petites egos, create samskaras, not free.
Why Brahms Intermezzi are so great? They sound so beautiful. Not shallow, predictable music; maybe because their many nuanced layers? As an intermediate piano player, I struggle play them for now, but Op 117, no 1 and Op 118 in A are for sure in my desired list.

The Intermezzi Op. 117 is arguably one of the most beautiful piano pieces, glad to hear it once again

I'd like to use this opportunity to replace the word "arguably" with "definitely" -- it's a masterpiece.

These late piano works are so personal and intimate that Brahms said even an audience of one is too many.
The best piano works of the Romantic era, next to Schumann and Chopin.
do you think this is better than schumann?

does anyone else has this high pitched beep on the left speaker? especially in the a minor 116
Not hearing any high-pitched beep.
These are great - I'm not a huge fan of a lot of solo piano as I find them to be trite but these are interesting and tasteful
I am sure Brahms will be grateful for this.
solo piano is 'trite'? so, a Beethoven sonata is 'trite'?
I fail to understand how solo piano works are ever trite
A brahms family?
No, he's talking about The Brahms Age!
