“Lullabies of my sorrow”, that is how Brahms described his short pieces for piano, the intermezzi, capriccii, Klavierstücke and others. In the small form he expresses his deepest musical thoughts, full of tenderness and melancholy.
A new recording with Norwegian pianist Håkon Austbø, who shows his deep insight into this complex music. Austbø already revealed his great artistry in his recordings of Erik Satie (BC99384) and of the complete Lyrische Stücke of Edvard Grieg (BC99748), which received rave reviews.

Such a superb artist Håkon Austbø is. A first-rate musician and a great pianist. He knows what he is doing. Kudos.
What a find. This intelligent rendition of Brahms by Norwegian pianist Hakon Austbo is as fine as any. For decades Julius Katchen has for me been the touchstone of Brahms piano music. I discovered Austbo when I needed company painting a shed for several hours. Can't understand why he's not better known.

I have always admired Brahms, but after this and another selection of piano music my admiration of him has sky-rocketed.Also due to to listening to some of his chamber music which goes "straight for the kill." He is a match for anyone, Schumann, Wagner, Boulez, Stockhausen. For once the picture abive seems suitable. The great trees bending perhaps in the wind, and the women whose arms reach up the trees and the girls with arms opened to this experience.

Una lettura molto pulita, essenziale, lontana da tetraggini di ogni tipo, intenta a cercare senza orpelli la sostanza preziosa, nascosta nel cuore di questa musicalità dolce e ruvida al tempo stesso, oscura come radici contorte di un bosco secolare ma che disvelata ci porta verso abissi di saggezza incommensurabili.
Spiccano le giovanili Ballate, così nordiche, ma anche le grandi Rapsodie emergono in tutta la loro recondita passionalità.
Sublime Brahms, interpretazione colta e forte nel suo carattere diretto e intelligentemente spontaneo.

How impressive and untypical those first ballades. The Schumann's were deeply impressed when this young man knocked at their door an played such pieces. For Schumann it was as though the long awaited messiah had arrived
And Brahms had the greatest respect for Schumann whom he sometimes called “ mein Herr, Domine.”
@@raymondgood6555 - More than respecting Schumann, he .loved him. He had a bit of a battle with Clara for wanting to publish unpublished works . She eventually allowed him to publish such works in an additional volume..Brahms when he was teaching composition would suddenly get up and take the manuscripts of songs Schumann composed when he was 18 or 19 saying 'this is something I can't teach you.' He sat down to play them with tears running down his cheeks.

Haha, the 2nd Rhapsody sounded like the "Spring Song" of Mendelssohn and a bit of Asgore's theme from Undertale.
Johannes Brahms was a frequent visitor to the house of Robert Schumann and his wife Clara, also a composer and pianist, a woman who is described as having magnetic charm and great intelligence. It is said that between the two there was an intense relationship, it is not known whether only spiritual - cultural or sentimental in the strict sense. As I read in the fine comment of an English scholar, it is an idle question, even coarse: whether or not there was a sexual relationship between the two has no meaning. What matters is the very intense relationship between their cultured and refined souls, a partnership of educated and ingenious spirits, which, among other things, produced some great compositions for piano, in particular the sonata n. 2, which bears the dedication to Clara. If this can have a meaning, in this perspective, I can add that Brahms never married: probably, any other woman would be miserably withered, vanished into thin air, compared to the image of Clara.
More of this inevitable nonsense about nonsense about Clara and Brahms. yest, they had an intense relationship in the early stages and this had an effect on some of Brahms' music. Later this came to an end. Read Clara's biography and diaries. The relationship became quite uneasy later. He was not as you said only a frequent visitor but actually lived in the house with Clara after Schumann's death.
He was also in love with Julie Schumann, which must have been quite disconcerting to her mother, Clara!!!

The normal day of coughing , stop smoking
Day 3 of no cigarettes. The first two days my flesh felt as if it was being consumed by the unquenchable fires of hell but today is pretty good
Vitamin C (without any sugar in it of any kind) helps with that, nicotine withdrawal.
Nicotine etc left in the lungs causes craving for more. Vitamin C helps clear it out of the lungs, so cravings are reduced for many people. (Plus all the happy feelings & healthy results from taking C with no sugar 👍). With decent hydration also of course.
