What's up you guys?! As you all know, I've been dealing with a neck injury for a few years now and it's been increasingly getting worse. This winter season at home was amazing but I kept having to take periods of time off to rest my neck after every big swell. I came to California to finally figure out what was wrong and how to fix it for good!

Senor Rothman! I had 2 disks replaced in my lower back in 2004 after being in pain for 8 years. I'm 54 now and still managing to pick off waves at crowded as f Santa Cruz. Don't get bummed out if your neck pain lingers for a while. You're muscles are used to sending pain signals to your brain. This memory pain can sometimes take a bit to unlearn. Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing you rip!

@@KoaRothman I see that you do. For me Yoga was the key. I got my head stomped on in a fight, rolled my car and had an emergency surgery to remove part of my small intestine all within a year when I was 18 years old. By the time I was in my early 20s I could barely stand for more than 30 minutes without radiating pain through my back. Doing Yoga was miraculous. It aligns everything and helps to break the pain loops. Also, eating anti-inflammatory foods like fruits and vegetables helps a lot, especially as you get older. Good luck ma brotha!

Good luck with the healing process, stick with it. To anyone who might be watching this and thinks they need similar surgery, I'd like to advise deep yoga. I'm not talking about the classes you're probably familiar with on at least a face level, I'm talking hours a day sitting through the discomfort till it goes away and bones start to shift in their joints. How I did it takes about 2 years of daily dedication but I made up my own way to save money, there's many paths to the end goal but you have to sit through the discomfort. The adjustments happen in multiple phases, each phase starting with a foot and ankle adjustment followed by a knee, adjustment, followed by hips, shoulders, neck, elbows, wrists, fingers, and repeats back at the feet. Believe in yourself if you try it.

I showed my gf this video and she teared up, she was moved by the credits dedicated to those on your medical team, nobody does that! We both agree bigger voices are calling you, your just not a surfer and a role model but someone who is kind, loving and humble and connects with everyone you come into contact with. This video shows people of all walks of life listen to your words, that's special! The Lord very well may have targeted you to lead many of his lost sheep to the glory of His thrown. If you are half the man I think you are, look deep inside your heart and you'll find your true calling! I can close my eyes and see so many of the youth of today connecting with you and the teachings of Jesus form and shape everything they do.

Brotha Koa! I've had 3 major back surgeries. All of mine are L3 to L4 to L5 to S1. 12 screws and plates over 15 years time. My injury was a car accident. Broke my L5 and blew my L4 L5 discs out. Keep that neck in great shape buddy and all will be well. Glad to hear your good! Yew🤙 G🤙 btw my surgeries were 5 hours plus, each one! LOL

Koa I had that exact surgery in 2018. C-5/6 herniation. It’s the best thing I have ever done. You will feel way better as soon as you wake up from surgery. Took 3-4 months to be 100% for me. Good luck.

Wow Koa...this video definitely caught me by surprise...I've been a RN since graduating from UH Hilo in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing...I moved from the Mainland to The Big Island to surf many years ago...&, like so many others have mentioned here, I injured my neck surfing a big NE swell my first winter there @ Honoli'i...I never did have surgery on my neck though, but it definitely did continue to bother me pretty much ever since...I'm just a recreational surfer, but I certainly understand your decision, especially considering you are a professional big wave surfer, & an elite athlete...I am certainly no fan of surgery, yet there are times it cannot be avoided...in my own case, I've had both left & right inguinal hernias surgically repaired (a couple of years apart---from lifting heavy weights)...I work as a RN, NP in ER/Trauma now, just down the road from Newport Beach, in San Diego...previously, I was a Neuro ICU Nurse...so, I have taken care of many patients pre-&-post-op from spinal surgery...you appear to be in expert hands, with a great surgical team--so, I know you're going to be fine & you'll make a full recovery, & soon enough you'll be surfing better than ever, & pain free for a welcome change...Aloha, Bill

I had a fusion of L5-S1 at 29 yrs, now 38. I surf, run and mountain bike. Don't stress these surgeries are super common and if you're already living a healthy lifestyle you will recover. Might be worthwhile considering smaller waves though.

Oh boy Im a nurse and a life long surfer-two knee surgeries and two back surgeries etc... Ive been on both sides of your experience. Been hands on during tons of surgeries in the OR and post Op. Its scary for patients- but you did great. PLEASE PLEASE do exactly what the MD's tell you post OP and recovery. They are EXPERTS that do this day in and out. PLEASE listen to your PT if you do rehab. and you better do the rehab!!!!!

Just came across this video and glad I did! I'm 6 months in after having same surgery but my C4,5,6 &8 were herniated and had narrowing of my spine too. They went through front of my neck as well and put two metal plates inserted and stem cells taken from my hip to regrow/replace disc. I'm way better than I was prior to surgery but still got ways to go healing. This def gives me some hope going forward! Side note-met your brother at Chopes contest in Tahiti back in 2015, he's a funny dude 😂

Drs Shifflet and Bray and the whole staff at DISC are the best. I had microdiscectomy at L5 S1 in 8/19 and now I mountain bike almost every day, and surf and snowboard too!

    Wow....so C5 , C6.
As I told you here Koa I did my C3,C4 and have a titanium plate and 4 X 14 mm screws in my spine there. I was paralyzed in the water and had neurosurgery, had a brain injury and dislocated my shoulder as well.
10 years later and I still surf.
I had to learn to walk again.
Just want you to know you will be better than ever KOA. 🙏Best wishes man. Hope you get in the water soon again. I couldn't watch the entire video, too many memories coming back. Need to put it out of our minds. Anyway, get well soon.
    🏄 🙏 🤟 💪 🌴

Recovery Suggestion: When I had my disk replacement I used Virtual Reality (VR) Games for my recovery. Games like Beat Saber were wonderful in strengthening my neck and upper back. I had a lot of residual muscle pain/spasms and VR gaming worked better than any physical therapy for my recovery, and it is a lot of fun. I am several years after surgery and the results are still great, full movement and no pain.
