  • Using Google Earth Pro to track the alignment of the original Great Central Railway, from the site of Nottingham Victoria Station (now Victoria Shopping Centre) to the preserved Loughborough Central Station. Part of the trackbed is occupied by the rails of Nottingham Express Transit, still under construction on the date of the satellite imagery. A long stretch is in use by the GCR North heritage railway, and the projected link with the main GCR section is clearly visible at the Loughborough end, with the new bridge in place over the Midland main line.

Wonderful production. Thanks for sharing. Just shows how much the Railway did for the Towns and Cities, the foresight of the original developers and the regret of the modern man!

Excellent stuff. Shows the lovely straight wide formations of the last main line built in England and the firstone built with steam excavators

Thanks Iain. I was referring to the straight bits of lines broken by roads in the first 20 seconds

Is the north portal of Victoria tunnel still there under the modern buildings,as access to the heating pipes for Victoria flats and the shopping centre run through the tunnel. Access used to be gained at the southern portal, but this has been recently built over with an art gallery,so there must be access at one end surely,to maintain the heating pipes!!!

Thank you FM. But you have not explained the rlwy line interruptions. Surely they are not part of the heritage rlwy?

Great video, BUT why so fast? you can't read the captions as to the locations. it spoilt it for me, I stopped after abut 5 minutes

Noted! It's a compromise between showing all the detail and losing the viewer's attention due to lack of progress. RUclips has options for the viewer to control the playback speed!

@@flymuzza9205 I'm sorry but I was unaware that I could control the speed of the video, I must look into it, and thank you for the information

Strange to see the railway lines still there and interrupted now and again by roads. So, why are they still there? They could be ripped up for hikers and ramblers etc. Or is there a hidden agenda that they may be brought back in to use in the future?

The tracks you can see in the early parts of the video are part of the Nottingham Exprtess Transit system, and is used by trams running between Clifton and the city. The Ruddington to Loughborough section is part of the GCR Nottingham heritage railway.

@ichabodon checkout GCR Bridging The Gap project which has been on the go now for some years. Will connect GCRN with GCR and connect Ruddington with Leicester North.

This line would have been ideal for HS2 - but for our continued short-sightedness as a country.....rather similar to what happened six years ago. 🤔
Tearing up large chunks of the GCR was one of the biggest mistakes the UK made in the 20th century. The entire line should have been mothballed, but also retained for potential future 're-use' so as to prevent bits of it being chopped up and the land sold.
Germany for example would have done this ......but not us. We always make stupid decisions which we later regret, and which come back to haunt us many years later. Sounds much like Brexit!
