So many aspects of this song are so sad, but the main point that gets me every single time is the "two days past eighteen" part. This kid didn't sign up to go fight, he was drafted and didn't even have anyone to send a letter to.

"the letter" and "the soldiers" are the clue. You will not say "the letter" if the soldier himself send the letter, it will be "his letter". Base on movies (I'm not American, so I don't really know if it's the reality), when soldier is coming home alive, there's no letter sent to love ones unless written by the soldier itself. But if a soldier is dead, a formal letter is given to the love ones.

that yodel sound is a traditional country sound. a giant pet peeve when people decide to react to country is when they don't pay attention to the story/lyrics, that's the point of a traditional country song 98% of the time.

    • @cariwaldick4898

I often wish for these reaction video folks to have a copy of the lyrics to read as they listen. There's only one take, so while most of us will go back and figure out what they were singing, the reaction doesn't take that into account. I've seen SO many get the words and meaning wrong, and miss the whole message. It doesn't peeve me--heaven knows I've messed up song lyrics many times. But it could turn like into love.

    Travelin’ Soldier
    Two days past eighteen
He was waitin' for the bus in his army green
Sat down in a booth, in a cafe there
He gave his order to a girl with a bow in her hair
He's a little shy so she give him a smile
And he said would you mind sittin' down for a while
And talkin' to me, I'm feelin' a little low
She said I'm off in an hour and I know where we can go
So they went down and they sat on the pier
He said I bet you got a boyfriend but I don't care
I got no one, to send a letter to
Would you mind if I sent one back here to you
    I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young, for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
    Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
    Never more to be alone
When the letter said, a soldier's comin' home
So the letters came from an army camp
    From California then Vietnam
And he told her of his heart, it might be love
And all of the things he was so scared of
He said when it's gettin' kinda rough over here
I think of that day sittin' down at the pier
And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile
Don't worry but I won't be able to write for a while
    I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young, for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
    Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
    Never more to be alone
When the letter said, a soldier's comin' home
One Friday night at a football game
The Lord's Prayer said and the anthem sang
A man said "Folks, would you bow your heads
For a list of local Vietnam dead"
Cryin' all alone in under the stands
Was a piccolo player in the marchin' band
And one name read, and nobody really cared
But the pretty little girl, with a bow in her hair
    I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young, for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
    Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
    Never more to be alone
When the letter said, a soldier's comin'...
    I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young, for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
    Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again

Great Song, very sad. I had a Brother in Vietnam in the 101st Airborne, He went through Boot Camp, advanced Training and eventually to the Same Battalion with a Soldier with the Same Last Name, but my Brother was Robert J and he was Ronald J.
My Brother was a top Graduate in one of the schools he went to with him and they actually Put the Other Guys name on the Plaque and certificate ( but with my brothers Service Number) ,
A few months Later in Vietnam their Battalion took heavy Casualties, My brother and Ronald were both wounded and evacuated. Ronald died on the Medivac.
They mixed the names up AGAIN and started to send notification to my mom that my brother was Killed. Luckily they caught it, but they had my brother call home from the Hospital ( think it was something called MARS that allowed them to get calls through) so my mom would know he was OK.
My Brother got back from overseas safe but died in a Motorcycle Crash in 1977. My family still has the award and Plaque with the wrong name on it of the Soldier who died over there.

I think the song came out in the early days of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It really tugs at your heart strings about the plight of the average soldier. Dixie had gigantic talent on instrumentals. The lead singer with her anti Iraq war comments in 2003 took the group out of favor in country. They were chart toppers before that. ps After this comment I looked up the lyrics and they broke me up.

I love the Dixie Chicks and have seen them live a few times, they are incredibly talented! It would be interesting to see your reaction to their song "Not ready to make nice". They wrote it after the incident that happened in (I think?) 2004 when they made an off-handed comment in a concert in the UK that they were embarrassed to be from Texas where George W Bush was from- the comment made it back to the states and created a blow up where they were being boycotted by fans and radio stations, and even receiving death threats. I personally love the song and think it is the perfect reaction to it all- to not be able to make one comment and have your whole career ruined, is insane. Most people think they did it to themselves but I think it was really one incident that sparked this outrage culture we live in today where things get blown completely out of proportion. Anyway, great reaction and hope you check that song out, reaction or not!

The lead singer is Natalie Maines. She voiced her opinion on President Bush & just about ended their careers. Radio wouldn't play their songs. I wonder what happened to free speech.

Free speech doesn't mean there would be no consequences to what you say. You can say whatever you want but don't think it may not come at a price. I always try to go by the saying "Think before you speak".

A good friend of my wife's detail, her job, in the Army was making sure all pertinent paperwork and effects that were sent to her matched with the toe tag on the bodies of my fallen brothers in uniform when they were being offloaded in San Diego....I can't recall the specific MOS, but in the almost two years she worked that detail, she lost over 40lbs, and she lost her marriage cuz her husband was a stateside Air Force reservist who was also an accomplished a*shole....in this song, they talk about the soldier comin home in a flag draped coffin, not a good thing....

They sing so well together and it was sad because they made a statement about President Bush and because they wouldn't apologize it destroyed them as a band for quite a while but it's good to see they're starting to come back now. They were done so wrong just because they had an opinion.

The end of the song. The lyrics talk about reading a list of local Vietnam dead at the foot ball game that the girl was at. The soldier she was writing to was in the list. Nobody really cared besides her. Sad song.

The letter is the one thats hand delivered when a soldier dies in combat.. Not a love letter.. The song at the end is "taps" played at funerals for our fallen soldiers its a final salute and farewell.
