I once worked with a chap that said that there are interconnecting Lava caves, and they used to enter at Western Springs and came out close to the Museum. After children were lost inside for quite some time, the caves were sealed, around about 1948 and forgotten about. But they still exist, just got to find the entrance!!
As a long time caver I have looked around Western Springs for a while and suspect there could be some reason of such a thought. Not sure they could be long enough to get lost in though.
@@petesmith1 oh, i didnt go into any of them, theres some entrances that we knew about as kids that have been blocked off due to kids going in and almost getting lost. They just put small trap doors on them so that kids cant get in. I think they were blocked off way back when Jim Bolger was around😅
There are old stories of a Pā in Ōwairaka getting raided and the people escaping through one of these tunnels and coming out somewhere in Bastion Point
unreal. Me and a guy were installing an artificial turf area in mangere bridge about 10 years ago and at one end had to put in a volley wall which required digging further down to put posts in. While digging hit a rock, which we thought was concrete but smashed right through it, me and him both fitted in the area completely covered, the passage got thinner but would of gone for miles. Not suprising in auckland with all the volcanoes, they must be everywhere
My father told me that his grandparents had a house in Mt Eden. At the back of the garage was a tunnel and apparently you could follow it and come out in the central city somewhere.
It’s a big nope for me. I’m not claustrophobic but squeezing between a rock and a hard place gives me claustrophobia. Thanks for going though and recording. 👍
Oh my gosh, this was very hard to watch, that is my worst nightmare to crawl round a cave on my belly. No thanks. I do remember staying in Mount Eden on a large property for a time and you could stamp on the ground and it sounded hollow. It was very close to the massive cave that fire department use in training.

@_seanwillis Thanks. I will check that out now while I still remember. I'd love to have a lava cave in my garden. The architect snd builder of my m-i-l's house in St Mary's Bay (now my wife's) built a grotto on his cliff face. Next time I go down there I will see if it survived the (cyclone) slips, which, incidentally, resulted from council restricting flow in the harbour outlets forcing all the water from St Mary's Bay up through the drains and down between the clifftop houses.
@TrevorDennis100 I used to be a keen caver, mostly in Waitomo and near home in Whangarei. I've always had claustrophobia so I would only take squeezes feet first. Nowadays even watching people in squeezes on tv or youtube makes me ill. I watched one on tv where the exit was a squeeze into a stream so if you got stuck the water would fill until you drown. I had a full-on claustrophobic episode with that, breathing difficulty and urgent need to cool down.
Was about to say... "Wow stuff left comments on" then realised... Cant have the population discussing how much we hate Stuff and their biased bile now can we?
Yip, just wait for Lake Taupo to kick off in the near future. It's the mouth of a super volcano under that water, soon you will have all the lava you ever wanted tp explore
Seems rather reckless and probably a breach of health and safety to access a confined space?! Was training provided? People have died doing exactly this activity in Auckland...So I hope this is investigated to see safety rules were properly enforced
Are these caves known to have poisonous gases in them..? There are caves and potholes all over the UK and thus very rarely seems to be a problem here..🤷♂️
@markhepworth No they are not, Auckland doesn't have that kind of volcanism. It would have to be some kind of man made gas or something suckling up the oxygen

Never, never do this. Gases heavier than air can fill these caves. Without a gas detector you will never know, and die down there.

Where was the gas detector on the person?
Generally in a cave known to have airflow you won't be wearing a gas detector.
