    • @sonicexereaper6814
      @sonicexereaper6814 2 года назад +4

      Actually, that was my confusion, too. Tobin’s blade was sharp enough to cut through fish and melon. There was no way his Cutlass gave that rope a club-like strike. I feel like Doug just didn’t give it enough force. But overall, glad Tobin won this one, especially how passionate and energetic he sounds when building and testing his blades.

  • @jonathanmergl9481
    @jonathanmergl9481 Год назад +13

    Just pointing out that when it comes to cutting with swords and sabres, blade alignment is crucial to get a proper or clean cut, particularly with a hoisted rope, as the slightest unalignment can cause the blade to throw itself way off. And in the rope cut test, when they tested Tobin's sword (I think that's his name) the edge alignment was off, now I'm not saying that's the reason it didn't cut through, but its was definitely a contributing factor.

    • @jowolf2187
      @jowolf2187 8 месяцев назад +1

      Doug is kind of the odd guy out on the judges panel - all of the others are verifiable smiths associated with museums and/or the ABS. The show and some vague interviews he's given suggest that he's a martial artist and air force vet who trained special forces in close quarters combat - given his complete lack of knowledge on how to properly use most weapons outside of a knife and his limited vocabulary suggesting a lack of education (the air force is the one branch of the military that emphasizes continuing education with many air force vets having advanced degrees and extensive training in specialized fields) I have my doubts. There's also no record that I can find of him outside his own interviews and website(s) (social media included). Now while I doubt the History channel would support a felony (falsely claiming to be a veteran is a crime) - they might exaggerate the credentials of someone who's only real purpose on the show is the entertainment value of his ridiculous antics.

    Poor consistency. Doug had edge alignment errors and varied between one and two handed strikes, favouring the winner by usually holding his sword with 2 hands, probably because it was overly heavy in the first place.

      True, dude, cutlass is a one handed weapon

    • @4Curses
      @4Curses 3 года назад +5

      Well, actually Doug is worse with 2 handed weapons. But he isn´t using it like a 2 handed sword, he´s just using his off-hand to support the wielding hand, not the handle. he does the same when he delivers the cut with Ron´s cutlass on the rope.
      If you compare the places Ron´s cutlass hit the fish and the rope, you can infer that the blade is probably dull at the place where it curves and sharp on the straight part. Because the edge alignment on the fish seemed good.
      And that's also the reason it failed the kill test. if you swing the blade it´s the tip and the curve doing the damage. if these are dull, there is simply no damage. btw, he also used both his hands using Rons weapon in the kill test. it´s just harder to see because of the giant basket.

    They have to fix the human error problem in these tests. If Doug hits at a different angle each time, the test is basically useless and unfair. They gotta figure out a more scientific approach. Two different people would slice and have two different results.

      The human aspect is part of the test. Tobin's blade is heavy and unwieldy, so even a man like Doug, who is a bladed weapons expert, will have a hard time getting correct edge alignment. They aren't JUST testing the sharpness in the sharpness test; they're also testing the wieldability of the weapon.

    • @jerrystott7780

    Honestly, between the fish, the rope, the dummies and the size difference of the swords, if anything this should have been a tie. One is hard to swing but easy to kill with, good at cutting fish, and the other one is easy to swing and hard to kill with but will cut thru rope. Seriously would have loved some close-ups of the edge geometry. Tobins was obviously concave and Ron was convex. Cutting vs chopping. And technically cutlasses were made to do both, so they both halfway nailed it, and halfway failed.

    Tobins blade was plenty sharp enough to cut through the rope. The rope was hit with the glad of the blade and slid slightly upward causing the partial laceration. Seems like they might need someone else with a bit more virility to start testing those blades....

    Doug used TWO hands to cut through the first guys fish but then only used ONE hand to cut the fish for the 2nd guy. Not consistent testing my friend tsk tsk

    Does anyone know why one sword cut the fish but not the rope, but the other cut the rope but not the fish?
    Btw, Im in love with Tobin's cutlass! Id pay good money for one like it but with less handle. 😁

      The way it was sharpened matters.
      A toothy edge will bite into rope vs a fine edge that will cut into the fish.
      Also, the tip weight forward on the winning blade helped to push in further into the clothing material, more of a chopper.
