It had just enough poise to where it could broken rather than tank all hits for eternity, like in DS1, or have non-existent poise and get stunlocked by katana light spam, like in DS3. Guess we'll see how Demon Souls remake goes.

It's because it was such a large weapon meant for taking out polearms. So you need that extra weight in order to survive the pounding, as the strength test demonstrated.
@@Shifterwizard It's not meant to cut polearms. After the pikemen formations hit each other the men with the twohanders went in to kill the now vulnerable pikemen. The reason for the sword beeing so long is range against the pikemen and riders.
The kill test was pretty underwhelming this episode. I get that it's a heavy weapon and maybe they wouldn't want to do so much, but replacing one of the maneuvers with a head or neck shot couldn't have hurt.

I feel like making them do flamberge for this particular weapon was kind of an overkill. Not all zweihanders had flamberge blades, and forging a sword of this size is difficult enough.
@@liamcragin there are some theories that the flamberge blade could cause more devastating injuries with the wavy blade, other theories are that the waves could cause a wider wound while the blade itself is contextually narrow when measured edge to edge.
This weapon is basically a Zweihander with the blade of a Flamberge. Most Zweihanders I've seen have a straight cut blade. While the Flamberge I've seen had a wavy, serrated looking pattern like these weapons here did. Either way, gorgeous weapons! I can't wait to own one. Superb job fellas. You're swords will definitely keal!!
Not to be too pedantic, but flamberge doesn't refer to a sword in particular but to the specific form of the blade. You could find in the same flamberge category a big zweihander as well as a rapier

They were asked to build Zweihänder, and they've build Longswords with the design of a Zweihänder. The real thing was between 5 to 6 feet (170-180 cm) long.
From what I’ve read a Zweihänder has to be at least 1.4m long. Also in the video they build a Flamberge not a Zweihänder, that would be my main dislike
There is another German name for this type of sword: Gassenhauer. Gassenhauer basically means more or less "alley carver", a soldier with a Bihander/Zweihänder/Flamberge/greatsword carves through the enemy lines like he would cut through a rainforest with a machete. A Gassenhauer is also a popular song that makes everyone sit in front of his/her radio at home and listen to it all day and all night.
They both did very well. At first I thought that Stephen's blade would win, because even though a heavy blade is good for impact, everthing hinted that Jay made his blade too heavy. Then the strength test happened and it gave the impression that Stephen's blade was a bit too light... in addition to the handle cracking. I'm convinced that it was a draw up to the strength test and Stephen would've ended up winning if the strength test went better, due to Jay's blade being very heavy and Stephen's being just right for being handled easy while still striking good. Also, next time infuse them with Chaos!
Just noticed Doug dismembers the bowels so the ballistics dummy's posture is leaning slightly down and that's how he gets a good angle to deliver a head dismemberment, provided the blade is sharp and strong enough to cut through the neck.
There was a Frisian Pirate that weilded a 6.6 kg (15 lbs) Zweihänder, and it was 213 cm (84 in). His name was Pier Gerlofs Donia, and he was known for his superhuman strength. The reason as to why his Zweihänder was so big, is because most Zweihänders were made to be as long as the person wielding it was tall.

That guy went backwards up a ladder that was right beside a hot forge while carry a huge sword. I get that he needed to be higher to quench it, but that seemed super sketchy to me.
I liked both of these smiths a lot but I'm very glad he came out on top bcuz he was just so incredibly wholesome, also... Who would ever dislike this? And why???
All that "Zweihänder cutting through Pike formation" thing is highly controversial under recent Zweihänder studies. As a real pike is quite hard to cut when it is just held by a person. And there is only 1 picture of a lad with a zweihänder and cutted wooden pieces at his feet. None the less it is a perfect bodyguard and flagbearer protection weapon.
no one mentioned the weight difference? this was also prolific as a dueling sword. the lighter sword actually looked really well made for how light it seemed to be.
They had multiple swords for various purposes, the big and heavy ones were used for binding pikes in battles and for duels or bodyguard work there were smaller ones (up to your chin instead of full height) with a blade that grew thinner up to the tip to further reduce weight. The extra kilogram of weight doesn't seem like it but it's a massive difference if you have to constantly swing it.
After watching people that know how to swing this weapon these test seem underwhelming. They should have used a pig for the kill test. Get some of those big flowing swings going.

That test with the "pikes" is hardly representative for a real battle situation. Pikes weren't as fixed like those in the video, a lot of the energy would just push them away. And I would guess that those pikes in the video are also a lot more fragile as they really were. Looks like the kind of wood someone would use for movies where people are thrown through walls or something like that.
These guys make the Zweihänder seem like a sledgehammer, the things are 6 pounds and use momentum to annihilate everything, not brute force, men were paid double not for surviving, but because the training and technique required to make them effective was valuable enough to warrant a higher pay, they weren’t used by big brutes either, normally by higher ranking soldiers who were proficient with other weapons as well, especially royal guards.
Large swords are much weaker than small daggers, as it's much easier to break a long blade. Do something similar with a long and short stick of about equal thickness.

I'm pretty sure zweihanders were quite light, I'm pretty sure only abt 6-8 pounds.
Object is supposed to be 8 pounds. object is actually 11 pounds, yes it has some weight to it because it weighs more than it should be.

6 kgs isn't a lot if you're 2 ms tall

Zweihänders are heavy for Swords (Around 3kgs) but not "heavy", if a sword is too heavy it becomes unuseable.
A big swords still needs to be light.
