The first thing Captain Sully did was start the APU it was the last thing on the check list.

I think this video would have been a lot more informative if it focused on the hardware with more detail on the machinery, its capacity, specifications, unique design features, etc. It really did not need seven minutes to mostly only describe what it is used for. The history of the APU was glossed over and left out a significant bit of history, the fact that the 727 was the first commercial aircraft to include an APU and the unique mounting location and operating limitations in that plane.

The APU can be used to provide bleed air in order to start the main engines and provide power on the ground when the main engines are off. The APU has it's OWN fuel tank with approximately about 30-35 minutes of fuel and DOES NOT run anything while in the air and are usually off while in the air as the main engines provide the power needed to run the air packs, avionics, hydraulics, pressurisation etc, if you loose both engines in the air for whatever reason and the APU is started it will provide power to essential things like the back up hydraulic system for flight controls, landing gear, radios etc but it has a limited fuel supply and when it's gone, it's gone. Boing also has something called at RAT (ram air turbine) that if you loose both engines will deploy automatically when it reads two dead engines and provides power to limited equipment like radios and the emergency hydraulic system for flight controls but the landing gear has to be lowered using the manual release so gravity can lower the gear and hopefully lock it in place.. The APU is essentially what it means, an AUXILIARY power unit to be used when and if needed, NOT all the time.

Most of what you say is incorrect. First of all, it does not have its own fuel tank. Fuel from the regular tanks is used.
The APU cannot run hydraulics, it can power certain electric hydraulic pumps, but doesn’t have the ability to pressurize the hydraulic system. The APU is for electrical power and bleed air. Saying it’s started when both engines fail is silly. When both engines fail, you are going down. It’s used when 1 or both electric systems fail (usually engine generators). Some airplanes can also use bleed air for pressurization at take off, so the engines are not tasked with this, resulting in better take off performance.
Boeing does not have RATs. That is an Airbus thing. And again, it’s not about two failed engines. You have bigger problems with two failed engines. This is used when you have generator issues.

Finally i know what is that exhaust back at the airplanes thank you lol

This is interesting. you don't really think about the actual engines behind the apu

He barely touched upon the engines behind APU's in this video. Go check out the APU in b-29's. That was an internal combustion engine.
As with many large aircraft, even after the jet-engine became readily available.
Eventualy, jet-based APU's did take over.
But it sound allmost like APU=small jet-engine here. That's certainly not the case.

@@thanielsibula6189the APU is indeed a small jet engine. The APU on the 747-400 is a variant of the jet engines on certain Cessna Citation business jets.

The title should be "What an APU does" because it hardly mentions how it works.
