  • @nilsp9426

    Another thing that Kramnik categorically does not understand in this case is specificity. When you test for something (e.g. in medicine) you hope for a high sensitivity (when the problem is there the test sounds the alarm) and for a high specificity (when the problem is not there, the test does not sound an alarm). None of the accusations by Kramnik have a high specificity. In other words, he has not found a single behavior that would be even remotely specific to someone cheating. If he was honest about cheating prevention as his goal, he would want to optimize both sensitivity and specificity. But he only cranks up the sensitivity to 11. In other words, if there is the slightest sign of a behavior that a cheater would show, he sounds the alarm. But he seems to not care about mowing down everyone else how shows these quite normal behaviors in the meantime. With this attitude, you can accuse everyone of cheating. And by this point, his attacks are arbitrary personal attacks against the victims he chooses. If this continues, I think he should be held accountable for his behavior, both by the chess community and potentially a court.

    • @OsbornsConcise
      @OsbornsConcise 15 дней назад +16

      I agree 100%. Going around and accusing everyone of cheating without any reasonable evidence is behavior that should be absolutely stopped and punished

    • @RG001100
      @RG001100 15 дней назад +3

      Yes, this is what needs to be considered as part of “you should be able to question anyone”.
      The terms “sensitive”/“specific” might be too technical, but the idea is surely fundamental to statistical considerations. (As is difference between a chesscom elo, and a fide elo).

    • @coolcat23
      @coolcat23 15 дней назад +10

      Another way to express the argument is that one does not want many false negatives (low sensitivity) but at the same time does not want to have many false positives (low specificity). Kramnik does not seem to care about positive tests being false. He apparently thinks that any positive contributes to corroborating the accusation, whether it is true or not.

    What is so especially infuriating about this whole thing is that Danya is, as nearly everyone who pays attention is aware, one of the most friendly, most polite, most reasonable, most thoughtful, most intelligent, and most insightful of all public figures in the chess world. His commentary is as good as it gets; many (including me) think that he is the best commentator in the world in terms of explaining the action to the "average" person. His ability to commentate a blitz game is beyond phenomenal. When he interviews anyone at any time, he is unfailingly polite and respectful. He works extremely hard to teach chess to players at all levels, and does it both online and in-person. He is, of course, widely recognized by the world's top GMs as one of the finest bullet players in the world; he has played many of them both OTB and online in all sorts of formats. The fact that Kramnik has chosen Danya, of ALL people, as the primary target of his malicious attacks shows that he is deeply, deeply disturbed and has gone beyond the bounds of rational discussion. His current actions are beyond contempt, and possibly criminal. He deserves to be rejected and shunned by the world's chess community.

If even a guy like Danya does it, who else? Likely the majority of titled players. While my chess rating is only about 1200, I am a professional mathematician and a published author in mathematics (Oxford). In listening directly to Kramnik's own words (video recording) and reading his own words (assumedly) over the past few months, it is clear to me that he has very little knowledge on statistics himself AND either he is being given very poor advice (mathematically) or he's lying about consulting with mathematicians. I'm sorry if this sounds arrogant, but it's really obvious when someone who isn't an expert in statistics starts talking rubbish. (I imagine GMs or IMs would immediately be able to tell that I'm not an expert in chess a few seconds into listening to me talk about my chess.) There's no doubt: mathematically speaking, Kramnik's doesn't understand statistics and is simply making ridiculous accusations across the board.
    Although that IS my professional opinion, I must add that a human being, I have a bias. I think Danya is the best chess commentator in the world (sorry @GothemChess), a great content creator, an obviously brilliant chess player, and all-round complete legend. Also shoutout to GM Caruana, you're a legend too! Congrats on the recent win.

      Kramnik has been publicly told as much by other mathematicians and has still responded by insisting they are incorrect or misrepresenting him. That should tell you how willing he is to receive feedback on his methodology. Long before this cheating crusade began, Kramnik was notorious for spouting completely spurious lines in post-match interviews to try to convince the public he was winning, which engines have easily disproved. He has a pathological tendency to lie and to refuse to acknowledge error which is likely indicative of a personality disorder.

      You don't need to have anywhere near your level of prowess in mathematics to realise how little Kramnik understands about statistics. He'd argue that a coin must be biased if it shows 10 heads in a row, even if the previous 50,000 flips all showed no other long chains.

    Has anyone checked Kramnik for mental illness? He suffers from an incurable autoimmune condition called Ankylosing Spondylitis. It causes chronic inflammation primarily in your spine but sometimes other organs like heart, lungs, eyes etc. I know this because I’ve had the same condition since childhood. A small subset of patients tend to acquire clinical depression and other manifestations of declining mental health. The disease itself and the lifelong drugs that one has to take can cause this. For some people low grade inflammation is always there inspite of treatment. I can’t see any other explanation of him going mad all of a sudden from this likeable respectful chess icon.

      Validate Selectively: Acknowledge their strengths without feeding their ego to avoid escalating self-righteous behavior.
      Set Boundaries: Politely reinforce respectful interactions and avoid engaging with aggressive behavior.
      Redirect Conversations: Steer discussions toward solutions, subtly moving away from their accusations.
      Use Group Unity: Build a collective understanding among others to limit the narcissist's influence over group dynamics.
      Protect Your Energy: Step back when needed, and avoid letting their behavior drain or affect you.

    It's important to realise that whatever this is, it's not an evidence-based discussion, and responding to Kramnik with evidence will almost certainly not help at all. The chances are that it will only lead to further stress and mental and physical harm. At some point the best course of action may be to accept that Kramnik will not change his mind and continue with your chess in the best way possible. There is a very important broad, general point here - this really is not about evidence and reason. Sane, reasonable, highly intelligent, high achieving people in many fields become crackpots. You really can't do anything about it other than accept it. Stress can sometimes usefully be defined as not being in control. Take control.

    • @zyabayz101

      Excellent point, and Fabi is struggling with this as well. He and Cristian keep asking how Kramnik responded to this or that bit of evidence, or saying that they just can't see the logic behind some of Kramnik's thinking. Yes, of course you can't, because there ISN'T any logic or rational reasoning or behind it--there is only pathology. It's much more a psychiatric problem than a legal or rational problem.

      I love Danya as a commentator and chess-educator, but it's very obvious that there are strange things happening with him (where he looks, the reflections behind him etc.), but all those are evidence that something is fishy. It's not proof, but it definitely is eveidence.

      @@gast1981 No, they are absolutely not evidence of anything except--as some other commentor pointed out--personal peculiarities that many if not most chess players and streamers share. Of course many chess players--and streamers in general--look around, back and forth, up and down, in all different directions, while they are talking, thinking, or concentrating. Many people in many circumstances do it. I do it, when I'm working on something on the computer or on a Zoom call. Danya may do it more than average--some do it more, some do it less--but in itself it's meaningless. The actual truth is that Kramnik is off his rocker and deeply malicious; that's what's hard to accept. At this point, I think Hikaru's attitude is the only proper one: Tell Kramnik to GFHS and make no further response.

    I think Kramniks reach can not only be explained by his WC status, but also by people loving an underdog against the evil system story. These kinds of general feelings and attitudes blind people to the details. It is the same reason why greenwashing works: people want it to be true, even though every part of it screams "this is a scam" and there are countless news segments on it for years. In that regard I highly value Fabi's insistence on being an independent party and his willingness to clearly state his independent, not at all black and white opinions.

      It is the paranoid conspiracy theorist mentality. There are quite a lot of mentally cracked paranoid people out there willing to believe any nonsense, especially if it is similar to "champion of truth against shadowy elite".
      Sadly, a lot of them can't be reasoned with. A mere hint of something being off is enough for them to fully believe there is a conspiracy. And more you try to disprove it, the more convinced they get because they don't trust your intentions. As a final resort they just claim evidence is fabricated.
      Arguing with conspiracy theorists is futile. Ignore them or file defamation lawsuits.
